Here is a Shout out to Tsuyo, glad to see you are still around and kicking! And thanks for the good word.

Welcome ArcaneJazz and RacesWild, thanks for your interest. Reluctant Heroes is still open to applicants. At this time I am looking for one or two more players.

There are more than six human ethnicities I just didn't list them all because I felt there were so many like the Franks, the Lombards, The Heatho-bards, Jutes, Angles, Danes, Frisians, the various celtic/Gaul tribes, the germanic/norse people like Geats, Goths, Werters, Hundings etc, not to mention the Lapps, Finns and peoples of Russia the Eastern Steppe and then the Moors and Barbars, Egyptians, and Aqualonians. I didn't mention them because they are not as mythical a people as the Dunedain or the Melniboneans.

The elves are somewhat the same. In Reluctant Heroes many of the elves are of the Avari, meaning the "Refusers," or "Recusants." These elves never left Middle Earth to travel to Valinor like the Vanyar, Nolder, and Teleri. These elves became many of the Sylvan elves, the Sindar, The Nandor, and such. Eol, the greatest swordsmith of the elves was one of the Avar, his works and his style and skill live on in Reluctant Heroes.
Other elf folk are the Dayvanna, quite short and quick in mind and body, there also Norse elves who follow Frey and dark elves other than drow. There are Moon Elves and Vale Elves based on those found in Forgotten Realms and the Hinsul, Children of the Wind who are great seafarers and adventures who most resemble a mix of the Moors of North Africa and the ancient Phoenicians. They are the only elves who have naturally curly hair.
We try and start out with the core aesthetics and go from there, but that is mostly not to overwhelm ourselves and new characters with all the choices. Reluctant Heroes started forming in 1994 when Horseman and I got together and started co-dming a handful of fabulous players in Missoula, Montana and it has been growing and expanding ever since. Some of the Saints and Deities and lore-worthy heroes we put into the game from that time as a show of respect and recognition of their contributions. St. Dirk and St. Hardig being two examples. Neither of them ever became Deities while playing, we just felt to honor them in that way. Whereas St. Soberoth was a player character paladin who entered Sainthood through martyrdom.
Over the years we have added pieces from other games and other sources, but the core sources remain Tolkien, Robert E Howard, the Thieves World books and D&D 3.5
Using 3.5 as a base, we start at first level and then play on from there. We have had fighters who became Harpists and rogues who became priests and vice versa. As a Dm I strive to allow players to build their characters as they grow in the game as long as they stay within the Medieval setting.

Divine magic is powerful and prevalent throughout the world of Reluctant Heroes, with the current Church of the Saints more commonly referred to as the Church of the West in the Western Kingdoms.

The Church of the West Today

Today the Church of the West has spread across the whole of the western world. With it's headquarters at the Palace of Saints in Ravenna. The Church is overseen by the Arch-Bishop of Ravenna. The Arch-Bishop of Ravenna is also known as The King Maker as he is recognized as the only person who can bestow noble titles.

The church is based on the idea one supreme god of creation and a host of lesser gods, avatars or demi-gods who are canonized by the church for their demonstration of faith and bestowed with godly powers by the creator. The Creator is known as Orion. Orion Canonized four men, Cuthbert, O'Brien, Dinadain and Hardig. These four Saint's are known as the Canon Saints. With these four the church designed their primary symbol, a cross with each canon saint being one arm of the cross and the center being Orion.

The College of Cardinal's under the Arch-Bishop of Ravenna have the power to canonize any individual who has shown an undying faith for the teaching of Orion and the Church. Those canonized by the church are generally canonized as patron saint's related to their life work. These saints are known as Saints of Patronage and there are many. Any faithful member of the church may be nominated for canonization after they have been called to a higher existence.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saints of the Church

Orion The Creator Lawful Good

The Canon Saints
St. Cuthbert-LN-The Patron Saint of Justice
St. Dinadain-LG-The Patron Saint of the Common Man and Dragonslayers
St. Hardig-NG-The Patron Saint of Undead Slayers, Rogues, sailors, fishermen and folk who make
their living from the Sea.
St. O'Brien-LG-The Patron Saint of Carpenters, Masons and Builders

The Saints of Patronage
St. Abelard-LN-Patron Saint Sages, Scribes, Historians and Magic
St. Dirk-NG-Patron Saint of Orphan's, Love, Swordsmen and Smallfolk (gnomes and halflings)
St. Epona-CG-Patron Saint of Horses, Riders, Farriers and Horse Keepers, and rangers.
St. Jordain-NG-Patron Saint of Merchants and Travelers
St. Kargoth-CN-Patron Saint of Warfare
St. Ogma-N-Patron Saint of Bards, Learning and Knowledge
St. Silva-CG-Patron Saint of Foresters, Rangers, Hunters and Half-Elves

Donas and Loricato or more local Saints, who's following is more a cult than an actual Order. In the order of things, neither of them is considered a Saint of Patronage. Here's something to help,

1. Canon Saints
2. Saints of Patronage
3. Saints of Service,(People follow them, they are
generally recgonized by other Faiths within the Church
but their faith and worship is generally restricted to a
select place or group or activity.
4. Local Saints, like Donas, Loricato and such are usually connected to a place and are considered more cults than actual Orders.

For those who do not follow the Church of the West, there are a remnant of the Greek Gods and Titans, including strong support for Hecate, Hermes, and Apollo. In Aegypt, Stygia and Nubia the Egyptian pantheon still holds sway as do many of the celtic dieties in the British Isles. Farther north Odin and Uller, Thor and Sif, Loki and Frejya and their cohorts still remain. And to the East even older deities like Namter, Nergal, Ishtar, and Marduk roam and trade and influence the lives of mortals.

Okay I want to play a priestess of Thor. That's all I needed to hear I will tinker on a concept soon, but might go Cleric with Strength domain.

Edit: tbh I dunno what to play, so many paths to choose!

Character DetailsYggdra Asynja, Dwarven Cleric of Thor

Age: 44, just barely into adulthood.
Height/Weight: 4'3", 136 lbs. A veritable amazon by dwarven standards.
Appearance:

Personality:
Yggdra is typically quiet and observant of others, with a small gentle smile on her face. Even when her face has no expression she still seems content. She will hold her own in conversations, but often speaks little more than necessary. Few things set her off, but if someone were to cross a particular line with her, she will not hesitate to go off on them completely. Her alignment is Neutral Good, she is generally respectful of the laws of the land she is in, but will just as often break those laws depending on her mood.

Background:
Dwarves mature slowly, but this gives them plenty of time to become grouchy about how much the world stinks. Yggdra grew up a fairly typical clanmaid, learning various crafting skills, taught to be stern yet fun, and to never trust men of any race, including fellow dwarves. And while this outlook works for most of her kind, Yggdra knew there had to be more, something bigger than an insular life of artisanal toil nad emotional privacy. She studied the old gods of the north, a mythos her people still value as their own origin story. From this she found a deep love for Thor, the god of thunder and holy defender of the material plane. Following a decade of near non-stop partying among the local tribes, Yggdra could no longer deny her wanderlust. She wanted to know as much about the world as possible, and chase down a legend that Thor's own sacred hammer Mjolnir has been left somewhere to be found by someone truly worthy.

I suppose this means I cannot bring either of my two existing characters. Darn.

I don't think I'll get in here now. I'm quite burned out atm. I'll keep up with it though, in case you need someone else later.

The game, "Reluctant Heroes," is no longer taking applicants at this time as our roster is filled. All players should now post questions and such in the "Whistling Poke," thread on the game site. Excelsior!

Reluctant Heroes is open again for applications. Due to RL, we have had a few players drop out and few who planned on playing and just were not able to make it happen. I would like to give a Shout Out to Krow's Nest and Phettburg for the good advice on how to put together a proper Ad. Thank you both for the help.

The current time in Reluctant Heroes is the late Winter of the 1300th year of the Saints. Great deeds have happened, changing the shape and hopes of many. The rising tide of the Empire of the Black Sun has lost momentum and suffered several calamitous defeats. Goasme, their Dark Prince, has been slain, his forces broken and scattered. Now, across the Baltic coast Goasme once ruled, people are rising, and once again after long captivity, fighting for their freedom. The plague has seemed to lessen and there is hope for the coming spring.

Sulhorn, The Sorrow of the North, that ancient, evil Black Dragon still flies and spews her rage, wreaking devastation across the Frost March and the Dane Lands in the hunt for the killer of her hatchling, Snorvgar. The cunning and evil Duke Hugarn still rules in Nimjegin influencing most of the lower Rhine and Arch-Bishop Remus has been made Cardinal of Flanders, Utrecht and Northern Brabant. His influence spreads across the Rhine country and all the way to the Kingdom of Lorraine, where Queen Sigmae has returned from her quest to the East.....Dukes, Earls, bishops, clergy, Banner Knights and ambitious mercenaries and adventurers all vie for gain and glory. Into this, your characters will ride.

Here is the link, if you want to check out the game:https://www.rpgcrossing.com/forumdisplay.php?f=17130

Hi Clawsome, All new player-characters will start out at 1st level. There are two new threads that had been planned, one where a group of adventurers sail out to a bleak and barren coast on a scouting mission. It was originally intended for four players, currently we have one ranger and one rogue still wanting to play. The other thread/story is where a group heads into swamp land to find an ancient tower nestled against a fog shrouded lake. Several years ago a party of vikings had come across the place and brought the tale back of finding more gold than they could carry.
The current threads available for 1st level characters are "Far and Wide," and "Rhime and Ruins." The Far and Wide thread has two active players and the Rhime and Ruin thread is now fully open as both players have left. Rhime and Ruins starts out in the Monastery/Abbey of St. Marins, which is in the Frost March, which covers most of the Lower Rhine.
If you are interested in any of these, let me know. Also, the group may get together to do one of these things and after talking it over and getting to know each other, may decide to do something entirely different. That is okay, it has happened before.

In answer to a PM question, " Can characters multi-class?" the answer is yes.

Feel free to ask any questions here in the this thread, rather than PM me. That way everyone can see the question and may not have to answer it again.
