Name: Trumbold Handler
Age: 18*
Description:

Image: Hardly a perfect representation, but this seems alright!

Kinden: Beetle
Class:
Rogue (Plan on Thief**)
Background: "Noble";

Backstory-(Full of In-Character Secrets; Reader Beware! ):

Bond: I must make something out of myself, and I must determine what that something is.
Ideal: Success. I will succeed on my own merits, not because of my family's "great" name.
Trait: Regardless of social standing or kinden, I treat everyone with respect unless I have a good reason not to.
Trait: I'm happy to talk about anything other than myself.
Flaw: If there's a difficult decision to make, never look at me to make it.
Flaw: I have little to no experience in "social interaction."

Why is Trumbold interested in escorting the shipment to Helleron?
Trumbold wants to start making his mark on the world, but he's not yet sure how he plans to do so. In the meantime, he hopes to start gaining experience outside the walls of his father's estate. This shipment escorting seems low-risk enough, and who knows? Trumbold might stumble across a great opportunity for himself! Of course, he's brought his crossbow, just in case...
Writing Sample:

Extra Mile: Gladstone Handler
Secret(s): Yes
*Or the equivalent age, if Beetle-kinden have different lifespans; I saw that scorpion-kinden do, so I wanted to check.
**Depending on how much exploration is involved in the adventure and the type, I could see Trumbold developing the skills of Scout, as well.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions/critiques. Really like the look of the setting, so I'm hopeful that Trumbold fits in it!

I like what have you going on so far and Trumbold should fit in well!

Let me give you some feedback and then you can decide how much of the Backstory you want to share publicly.

I also realized today, that I mentioned that the world is somewhat steampunk-ish, but I never narrowed down the technical details too much, so let me give you a few examples.
The Lowlands has a railroad and there are also vehicles for flying like airships, Orthopters or planes. Planes and the like are usually powered by clockwork mechanisms that have to be wound up and expectedly have a set flying time. Lighter than air gases are sometimes used as well.
For weaponry they are also evolving and there are gunpowder weapons. I wanted to mention those in case somebody would like to create a character focused more in that area.

Thank you for the feedback. I'll share it publicly, after all.

In answer to your thoughts:

Updating my application now!
Also added the writing sample. Not sure if it's long enough. I've actually never done a writing sample for a pbp before, so I had to think it through a bit!

Everything looks good to me! I'll mark your application as complete, but you can obviously keep working on it if you want

Just wanted to stop by and post that I love the concept of the Adrian Tchaikovsky inspired game. I've only read his Children of Time and his Echoes of the Fall series (both which could also be great RPGs), but it looks like you've done a remarkable job in setting up this series as a game. I don't feel like I have the time to apply, but I'll be a reader of the thread. Good luck and happy story-telling!

Thank you very much I loved Children of Time, but I haven't read Echoes of the Fall yet. I can also recommend his Dogs of War book. It's a bit shorter and is quite a unique approach.

I think you'll like the Echoes series; insect creatures make a critical showing in the final book. I'll put Dogs of War on hold at my library ... but please tell me the main dog character doesn't die.

I'll check it out after my reread of the Shadows of the Apt series In preparation for this campaign I thought it was a good idea to read through it again.

I won't spoil anything about Rex!

Expressing interest.

You had me at "Steampunk!"

How are Artificers in this world? Are they magical(Inapt) or considered more engineering(Apt) in nature (or either/both)?

Good think I wrote it then, isn't it?

And it's the latter. Artificers are Apt and basically the overarching term for anyone working with technology, machines. So you've got engineers, weapons designers and so on and so forth. Do you have an idea for an artificer or was that more a general interest question?
If you have a background (for now I was including them somewhat in with the Guild Artisan) or even class that might fit the bill feel free to run it by me. Either way, I'm interested to see what you come up with and feel free to ask questions if you have any. It's been a lot of fun working with the others on their characters!

I thought/hoped it would be the latter.
I was thinking of a slightly hyperactive Fly Kinden, constantly inventing, and tinkering. Guild Artisan (from the Collegium naturally) sounds ideal.
Would I have to restrict the more "blowing-stuff-up" abilities, or is that just for the casters?

Define "blowing-stuff-up" abilities please

Edit: Ah wait, you mean the Artificer class from Eberron, correct? You're not the first one to ask about that one. Because that class is so strongly rooted in the magical approach to its combination with technology, it doesn't fit the world well unfortunately.

Correct. Also, drat!
I was hoping to refluff the actual magic part of it, like the class description says, into a more mechanical/engineering application, with bombs, incendiaries and improvised firearms.

Is there a class that would more fit the Artificer as described in the campaign world?

If you can make the refluff work we can take a look at it for sure. I'm not sure how well all the magic can be changed, but maybe it'll work?

I haven't come across a home brewed class that would fit the artificer in the world more so far. If you find one, I'd love to take a look

I can make it work. Anything that can't be refluff, just doesn't get used.

Refluff example: Catapult = Primitive Blunderbuss.
