Stars Without Number: Omega Blue

Game NameStars Without Number: Omega Blue
Game SystemOther Roleplaying Games
ThemeScience Fiction
FlavourScrappy Spacefaring, Sandbox Exploration, Grand Intrigue
Plot Summary
OMEGA BLUE

SUBMISSIONS CLOSED

SYNOPSISThe Cenotaph Institute was a multi-system enterprise dedicated to archiving knowledge and technology - both from undiscovered worlds, and from the golden era before the Scream. Well funded and resourced, the Institute commissioned expeditions to visit various systems and worlds, acquire items of significance and local data, and submit it for processing in the Memorial Array: the Institute's vast network of data banks, vaults and research stations. It hoarded its findings, apparently more interested in archival fidelity than using its information in the sector's interests. Any greater purpose to the grand mission remained known only to Cenotaph.

In 3211TC (Terran Calendar), the Institute collapsed abruptly and the Memorial Array went dark. Some centres were cleared out in the following confusion, others were raided by opportunists for valuable information and rare weapons. Many more were lost, their coordinates deleted in an internal purge.

Nearly twenty Terran years have passed. Much of the Array remains undiscovered.

The Omega Blue sector is isolated and the re-establishment of regular interstellar space travel is still sporadic. The Roma Commonwealth has established a disparate network of worlds, nominally allies and trade partners but actively scheming in the shadows. Other regions and factions have their own agendas, ranging from neutral trade to open aggression. Any one of the Array vaults, if reclaimed, could change the balance of power across the entire sector.

You are an ensign privateer on a ship aligned with the Reclamation Pact, an organisation dedicated to exhuming the secrets still hidden in the Memorial Array. Beyond that, your allegience is your own. Your ship is free to conduct its own business, but support from the Pact is reliant upon responding to requests to investigate possible evidence of the Array.

GAME BACKGROUNDStars Without Number is set in a galaxy where humanity colonised the stars, built interplanetary empires and developed sophisticated technologies, including the development of psionics - and then fell to cataclysmic disarray when an anomaly known as the Scream annihilated psychic technologies and disrupted FTL travel.

In the present, centuries of 'Silence' have passed since the Scream and patches of humanity have slowly recovered from this interstellar Dark Age at different paces. Some have preserved the old technology or reverse-engineered new endeavours, whereas other isolated worlds have slipped into barbarism or low-tech societies. This is a galaxy waiting to be rediscovered.

ABOUT THE GAMEYou'll be able to explore the sector at your own pace and receive local jobs to pay the bills, and play your own part in the dramas and intrigues of both local systems and interplanetary entities. But you will also receive special requests to investigate rumours of valuable Memorial Array sites.

You'll start off allied with the Reclamation Pact, but you'll have the freedom to forge your own collective destiny as a crew. If you have business in Kollheini, will you take sides in the civil war? Will you continue your relationship with the Pact or sell Array-salvaged tech to the highest bidder? Will you keep Array secrets for yourself, even if that brings the heat from one or more factions?

Posting Frequency: 1-2/week.

Number of Players: Up to 6 players. Two newcomers to the site are pre-approved, so I can only accept an additional 4 players at this stage.

Application Deadline: April 1 (I operate on AEST, so depending on your time zone plan to have your app in by March 31 just in case!

Accepted Material: We are using the Revised Edition of Stars Without Number. A free version is available on DriveThruRPG and covers all the basic rules with most of the extra goodies. You are under no hard obligation to get these rules yourself, although it would be helpful.

Experience with the system is not required. I will be providing guidance and notes to help everyone through. In short, it has some elements of D&D/Pathfinder that you may recognise - attribute scores, skill checks, base attack bonus, etc. - but with some small changes. Modifiers for checks are a little tighter and combat is notably more dangerous, even for fighter types.

Some restrictions and notes:
  • This is a system with a whole bunch of goodies available, including lots of gear, cyberware, robots and modified weaponry. That said, your character isn't going to be able to afford most of it at a L1 wage. If you wanted your character to be outfitted with something special right from the start like a pet drone or a bionic arm, that's fine but it would be narrative-only frills until you can afford to 'upgrade' to the statted equivalent.
  • No space magic - psionics only.
  • VI (robot), True AI and transhuman characters permitted.
  • My preference is that characters are human, as true aliens are very rare in this setting, but I may consider strong applications for an alien character - provided it would function appropriately with a nominally human crew.

APPLICATION TEMPLATEName:
Class: [Either the skill-based Expert, the caster Psychic or the self-explanatory Warrior - or any combination of two of these as restricted 'partials'.]
Background: [may be doctor, pilot, soldier, etc. - this will help determine starting skills. Just put whatever feels appropriate to your vision of the character.]

Possible Ship Role: [not mandatory]

Personality:
Character Backstory: [feel free to add to the setting - homeworld, stations, organisations, etc. - to establish your character. The only consistent requirement is that they must be in a position to willingly accept an offer from the Reclamation Pact as of the beginning of the game]

Placeholder for an application for this game.

Very excited about this. I've wanted to play something properly sciffy here for a while, and already have the rules for SWN. Although now I'm going to have to read them!

It's a pretty brisk read once you realise players only need to read the first 120 or so pages, and the back half of even that is just gear and ship rules.

Name: Nie Zło
Class: Partial Expert (Hacking), Partial Psychic (Telportation)
Background: Criminal
Foci: Hacker
Skills Sneak, Program, Administer, Connect

Possible Ship Role: Something computer related

Personality: The kind of guy who walks into the kitchen takes the last doughnut, checks whats in the fridge and then leaves without a word to the actual owner of the house

Character Backstory: Nie was once a good and honest man. An office worker by trade, he was happy merely being a code monkey for a large corporation. Nothing more than a tiny cog in a great bureaucratical machine. That change when one day his manager told him to look after a small box and whatever occured, to not look in the box. Nie took the box home and couldn't sleep. He wanted to know what was in the box. What could be so important that it must be hidden? He couldn't take it any more. After opening it, Nie couldn't quite remember what happened next, there was a flash of light, pain, lots of pain, and then he awoke in a strange bed four days later in a place he was told was an academy for people who had "Metadimensional Extroversion
Syndrome". This syndrome was apparantly triggered by what was in the box, and now Nie had to learn to control it. He spent the year learning the secrets of his power, teleportation, but grew dissatified with the Academy. Nie wanted more. The box had given him power and clarity. There were secrets out there, hidden things that could change a mans life. Nie wanted to find them and see what they held and the Reclimation Pact was the way to do it

At his heart, Nie is simply a curious man who wants to see whats inside the box. Whether that box be a computer, a door, or a high security safe is irrelevant. All Nie wishes is to learn whats in the box and if he's labeled a criminal because of it, so be it. The Reclamation Pact is a good way to learn about the dark secrets of the Memorial Array and maybe find one or two forbidden boxes to explore.

Name: Elliot Kline
Class: Warrior (Leader)
Background: Soldier
Foci: Unarmed Combatant / Die Hard
Skills: Exert 0, Punch 1, Survive 0, Lead 0

Possible Ship Role: Captain and or Muscle
Personality: Extroverted, highly disagreeable, remarkably conscientious, somewhat neurotic and occasionally open to "new and interested ways of doing things", were it not for his iron will pushing him to get the job done, his disagreeable nature would've got the best of him long ago in the unforgiving slums. Highly invested in those who have his back, but turns on a dime if he gets the whiff of a rat.
Character Backstory: Elliot Kline, born and raised in the Roma Commonwealth on Matopouka, he never had much of anything, slaved away to get what he had and even then it often slipped through his fingers. Spending most of his life working as muscle or managing muscle for undesirables, he's rough around the edges, but thankfully with a bit of nous, so he realized that it's often better to talk your way out of trouble, or convincing others to do the dirty work. While working these **** kicker jobs, he managed to charm his way into the heart of the girl next door, have two kids, the white picket fence (or the Matopouka slums equivalent), but like much of his life, that fell apart too. Unable to give up or move on, the 'middle ground' became working for Big Sis and sending money back to help his kids.

Name: Matt Schiff
Class: Partial Warrior/ Partial Psychic (Telekinetic)
Background: Merchant
Foci: Psychic Training (Telekinesis-1, Telekinetic Armory)/Dilpomat
Skills: Talk-0, Telekinesis-1, Trade-0, Will roll three times on the Growth chart for Merchant instead of picking skills when accepted.
Possible Ship Role: Interpreter and Quartermaster
Personality: Matt is friendly but firm. He is more of the Type A personality using logic and order to arrange his surroundings. Whether it’s due to his military training or the mindset required to use his psychic abilities, it has not been determined.
Character Backstory: Former Supply Officer for the Marca Enclave, more details to come.

He seemed like just your normal kid until he started showing psionic gifts and powers of Telekinesis. It started as being able to make impossible catches when playing with the other kids. It became undeniable when a piece of building debris had fallen on one of his friends. Matt used his power to lift it off his friend. A government official had been walking by and reported the incident to the powers that be. This caused his training and teaching from growing up to be preselected toward a military or security path. His gifts were developed and resulted in being able to create an entire armory out of thin air. His outgoing personality and knack for learning languages landed him a position as a Supply Officer for the Marca Enclave.

His job was usually uneventful except for one day...he noticed something off about his requisition files and storage units. There seemed to be a slow but steady loss of pharmaceutical pain killers that had almost gone unnoticed. He watched and waited with a marked case of the drugs. When he saw that it was his commanding officer taking them, he confronted him then and there. Apparently, the man had expected to be caught at some point and had already created a plan to deal with it. He called for security and had Matt arrested for the crime he accused his commander of. It was afterwards after he had served his two year sentence and was stripped of his rank that he learned of the security being paid to collaborate with his superiors. He left the Marca Enclave and set out to join the Reclamation Pact. The whole situation left a sour taste in his mouth and a lessons learned when it came to corruption in the government. He wouldn’t mind to one day get back at his former C.O. for the betrayal.

Going to have to dig out my book and think on it. But I will be throwing my name in tomorrow with something.

Question. Is this a solo game in a shared universe or are we all working going to have to work together as one crew? Or will have the option to seperate into smaller groups if we want?

Not even 24 hours and already a handful of applications - I'm feeling good about this!

Not necessary yet; because this will be a new system to most I'm expecting a 'session 0' of sorts to help everyone finish up their character details, so it can wait until then.

You'll start as a single crew. I won't rule out the possibility of players or teams splintering off from that into separate journeys, although I'd like to keep everyone in the same crew for at least a little while before considering that.

Name: Inter
Class: True AI

Background: Deep Space Unmanned Exploration

Possible Ship Role:Pilot, Mechanical Savant

Personality:Inter is a quiet floating roughly spherical body. Programmed with limited personality databases, it struggles to interact with the broader world for such skills were hardly required. His long voyages made him unused to travelling with humans and he often lapses into blasting multiple pieces of music in his room as he analyzes their structure and form. His long life and observation of humanity has lead him to one inescapable conclusions, humanity is doomed to fail. He does not seek the acceleration of their collapse, but with their current situation their influence on the galaxy will only wane. With them doomed, it leads that some other intelligence will fill the void of their empire and he is determined to secure a corner where AI minds can do so.

Character Backstory:It was designed in probing extremely remote or dangerous space phenomenon originally and was dispatched in a small fast research vessel equipped with nothing more than survey drones and other remote sensors. Able to branch its consciousness into the empty shells, it was capable of vast amounts of exploration in a small time or relatively small time. On a return trip back to civilized space, the Scream blew its ship out of FTL. Facing a catastrophic failure, it had to jettison most of the data its ship had collected and upload its own mind into the database. Achieving maximum acceleration, it scheduled the ship's navigation to wake it in the event of an anomaly before killing the engine and power system except for the most basic supply needed to run the navigation computer. It was here that it drifted for unknown years before arriving back into civilized world. Refueling, it didn't take long for it to run out of supplies and having to trade it for a shell and other information. Realizing it needed to find out more, it joined the loose association of contacts for the reclamation. Transferring between ships and Captains, it served as a pilot for hundreds of hours. With no need to sleep, it navigated the stars tirelessly.

Cool. So VIs (robots) are much the same as regular characters, except for obvious immunities (can't be poisoned, etc.) and that you can graft equipment to your chassis at extra cost, alongside some other quirks. You also decide whether you want to be a humanoid android, a worker bot or a vehicle bot (yes, you can be a talking car).

Transhumanism is a little more involved. In a nutshell, you'd want to think about whether you're connected to a 'polity' (basically whether you're part of a greater network, and where your consciousness is stored if something happens to your body). You can use an existing faction as a basis for this if it suits, or nominate your own polity. Then think about the kind of shell, or body, you want to start off with - could be a vat-grown organic body, a machine, or even a virtual consciousness.

ALSO: @everyone so far: sorry, but my initial paste for the submission template left out 'personality'. You won't be penalised for leaving it out, but it's an extra field if you wanted to add something there.
