Upon the realization that there was more of a difference to Glynn's eyes than just their color, Jimmy quickly hastened Tink for another retreat and then hurried to confirm with Boanagh what his observation could mean. While the darkling elder's eyes widened with concern and he strenuously considered whether there was any possibility for extenuating circumstances, the half-elven adventurer already called down the tunnel and inquired of Glynn why she had intercepted his messenger. Boanagh spoke up as soon as Jimmy was done taunting. "There is no such lack of sight among the dubh sidhe! In fact, it is not even so much of a sight at all, but no matter! She must be an impostor!"

Although there was quite the anxious energy to Boanagh's tone, he still had the wherewithal to keep his voice dim in the fear that his voice would easily travel in the current environment. Or so he hoped to prevent. In the end it wasn't quite clear what had made the change, but on her next reply, when she called out in the common language of the West Marches instead of the elven tongue it appeared that Glynn as well had decided that she cared no further for the pretense. "You are very droll, adventurer." Jimmy could almost picture the smile on the female's face, but there was a freshly evident edge to Glynn's voice that accompanied the semblance of amusement.

"I tire of this. Was your bravery in challenging the hounds only due to your steel-bearing friends? I can see that you do not appreciate a good hoax, but vexing me will give you naught. Do you believe that time is in your favor?" The tone which Glynn took didn't quite match her words, as she delivered her challenge with the same mocking derision that she had used in elven. Only it didn't sound much like a practical joke when one could understand her words. "How about this instead then? If I don't like your next response, I will simply kill these little freaks with my own hands. One by one." Loch let out a little hiss as he was the only other sylvan in Jimmy's party who spoke the common tongue. Glynn's voice dripped with complacency as she taunted the warlock back. "Your move."

Tink, Jimmy instructed his assistant, sneak Jimmy already gave him slightly more detailed instructions.onta that rope. We might need you to cut it any moment.

“Ahright,” Jimmy said in a low voice. “Looks like it’s on. She’s says she’s gonna start killing the darklings in there. B, when I give you the signal, I have lots of ideas for what to say, but I'm trying to be realistically brief with Jimmy's instructions, so we'll just see how Boanagh does.you call out to your people in there – tell them that she’s an imposter, an’ all that.”

“Oh, yeah?” Jimmy shouted back to “Glynn” in Common. “Funny you think I care what you do with them. The guy who’s payin’ me is out here.” Jimmy did care…but only to a point. Glynn’s manipulation of some darklings was neither Jimmy’s fault nor his responsibility. If she thought that she could exploit the half-elf’s savior complex, she had seriously misjudged him. Besides, he wasn’t confident that all of Glynn’s crew were truly darklings anyway. “From where I’m standin’,” he told her, “you look like you’re makin’ enemies a lot faster than friends. Maybe you better come clean an’ surrender while you still can.” Then Jimmy paused and cued Boanagh to give his own speech.

Echoes

Boanagh's pearly eyes widened visibly when Jimmy related to him the contents of Glynn's sudden assertions in the common tongue, and his hand immediately flew to his elder scimitar, clutching the hilt of his silvered weapon so strongly that the grey skin around his knuckles turned white. The half-elven warlock quickly instructed his darkling companion that he was now to expose Glynn as an impostor from afar. And right as the darkling elder was hurrying to come up with the words to accomplish just that, Jimmy veiled his speech just like his adversary had done and he put it to Glynn in unmistakable words that the lives of the few darklings she had brought were no sort of bargaining chip that an impostor like her would be able to hold over his head. He had been hired to end some sort of evil. Not to save as many lives as he could.

There was an offer in the room which Jimmy conveyed at the end of his little speech. If the other exits were barricaded, then Glynn was the one with no way out. Given the number of her enemies which could only end up rising now that she had declared her intentions, Jimmy put it to the deranged woman's heart that she ought to consider a timely surrender. The game was on. And just when the experienced adventurer signaled for Boanagh to deliver a convincing speech to his brethren to buy further time for Tink to sneak into position for his sabotage, before the darkling elder could serve his role as a leader to his people, the fake already gave her response.

Unlike before, Glynn's words were not called into the tunnel as they were clearly only meant for one of the darklings closest to her. And still, in these tunnels and caverns their voices did carry, and so the magic of Jimmy's helmet allowed him and Tink to understand her sylvan words. "Do it now. Down with it." There was no real urgency in Glynn's tone, almost as if the exchange in common hadn't happened. But then, the telepathic message which promptly followed reached Jimmy as it echoed in his mind as an urgent cry for help. "Boss, get me out! She got me, I can't see!!"

"Boss!! Come on!!!" Tink sounded very displeased with his current predicament, but Jimmy was already responding as fast as he could. The falling sound and impact of the tarp construct as well as Glynn's words had been audible for all in the party, and at the same time as the warlock bid the other sylvans to prepare for whatever combat might now ensue, he already turned his focus on sending Tinkerbell into his mysterious pocket dimension. If only Jimmy would be able to do so in time.

"Alert brethren!! You have an impostor within your midsts!! Glynn is not who she appears to be, and she wishes harm upon all of our colony!!" Boanagh called down the tunnel with all the volume he could muster with his untrained voice, yet given the nature of these caverns, the sound would naturally reach far and wide, especially into the campsite ahead. But for the moment Jimmy's party in the tunnel could only hear the shuffling of movement down the tunnel, and then the warlock heard another telepathic message from his dutiful familiar in the thick of it. "Oha. Ow!" Then Jimmy felt his unsummoning succeed. Tink had survived!

Still, for a moment longer there was only a muttered curse in sylvan, then merely the sounds of movement as there was no immediate decry or denial from Glynn. There couldn't be a single darkling who had not heard Boanagh call the other elder an impostor, yet the party wasn't sure if there was even hushed conversation in the campsite. In their current position in the tunnel, they were slightly out of the loop on what was happening. Still keeping to their practiced formation, Loch leaned into Jimmy and whispered directly in his ear. "If fight them we will, we should use light as a weapon against them! Boanagh could just keep back, yes?"

“Good thinkin’, Loch!” Jimmy said, then passed his idea around to the others. “Once we’re really mixin’ it up, that could make a difference. I only got the two torches, but I know a trick to make ‘em real bright. Maybe we’ll use that in a sec. Here, Ilalas – you take one.”

Jimmy recalled Tinkerbell to his shoulder. He gave the little guy a quick appraisal. “You’re as tough as you look, ain’t ya?” he asked in a congratulatory tone. “What happened in there?”

After receiving the spirit’s short report, with the corridor still quiet, Jimmy let Tinkerbell know that the warlock was sending him back. “I’ll be right with you,” Jimmy said, giving Tink Guidancea familiar pat and, after warning the others, stepped back into his familiar’s head.

OOCJimmy would actually recall Tink first; this just worked better narratively. Going back in, Tink will be an invisible raven, moving cautiously, FWIW.

Distant Deaths
left-aligned image

Readily agreeing with Loch that they should employ light as a weapon as soon as possible, Jimmy summoned Tink at the same time as he let the satyr retrieve two torches from his pack. "Me?! You want me to wield fire, rootless?!" Ilala protested with incredulity in her voice as Loch had already pushed one of the torches into her green hands, and the dryad's face suddenly turned a bit fearful as she stared at the bearded fey retrieving a tinderbox as well. "Don't you dare light it!" But Ilala didn't pull away, holding out the torch in front of her as if it was something noxious. Jimmy wasn't sure if the older sister felt bound by honor or simply didn't know what else to do, but nothing would be stopping him or Loch from lighting that torch.

For the moment though Jimmy was much more occupied with his wounded familiar, who had lost his invisibility during the resummoning and now visibly wore a single cut that had been carved deep across his leathery back. At the speed of telepathy, Tinkerbell rapidly conveyed a hastened report. "They've set up all around the entrance, boss! Darklings on spiders on the walls where they were hidden by that stupid cloth! The prisoners were there too, and they mightly looked like beholders! At least to me!" Following Jimmy's hand signal which he understood due to their long partnership, Tink began to turn into a raven as he was still conveying his thoughts. "But the darklings, they were all in a jumble! I could slip out and they were all in disarray, looking stupid! Only a single one of them jumped me, but the others just watched!" With a pat on his black raven feathers, Tink received a sliver of Jimmy's divine guidance.

"But why light?! If Glynn cannot defy darkness like a true dubh sidhe, should I not use my powers instead, Jimmy?!" Boanagh interrupted the mental dialogue, looking stressed. But Jimmy had absolutely no time to answer before suddenly shouts began to erupt down the tunnel. "What?" "Hey!!" "Glynn?!" And then a loud hiss and a faint bursting noise was heard before a choir of agonized screams echoed horrifically through the tunnel. Jimmy had heard such sounds many times, they were the stuff of nightmares. The darklings were in agony, they were dying. "Oh no!!!" "Why???" "Ahhhhh!" The silence had been replaced by a cacophony of disjointed, dissonant noises, hissing, thuds, screams, and then one after another a few flaring noises that sounded like things were getting set aflame. Before ever awaiting Jimmy's answer, Boanagh had already started sprinting in the direction of the slaughter happening. Suddenly Glynn's voice could be heard again, loudly speaking words of magic as she was clearly casting some kind of spell. The other three sylvans simply stood there appalled. The madwoman's magic had completed and then her gleeful shout echoed through the tunnel in the merchant's tongue. "Won't you join us?! This has just finally started to be fun!!"

Jimmy glanced at Boanagh, but declined to directly address the question about tactics. The darkling was apparently in denial that the party would likely soon be fighting his brethren. “Just hearin’ ideas, B,” Jimmy said. Then the sounds of violence exploded. Jimmy jumped to run beside Boanagh, but took only a few steps before Glynn issued her challenge – and cast her spell.

The half-elf stopped short. “Wait, B!” he called after Boanagh as the darkling dashed down the tunnel. “That’s what she wants – it’s a trap.” It was time for Jimmy to confront his employer with a harsh reality. “If we attack her now, we’ll have to fight all her darklings too. Maybe we can’t help that, but we ain’t done tryin’ to convince ‘em. I dunno just what’s happenin’ in there, but we can’t save ‘em by rushin’ in. We can’t help them unless they can see that she’s the enemy.”

While Boanagh rejoined the group, Jimmy had a chance to address Ilala’s concern. “Oh,” he said, “Right. You hold it, Loch. And you might as well light it.

“OK,”
Jimmy addressed everyone. “We stick out here for now – especially since she prepared some kinda spell. Don’t go all the way in, Tink – just No LoS into big area.to the corner.

“B, you gotta keep talkin’ to your people. See if they need us! Mention her talkin’ in Common ta me, and the fact that she doesn’t have your special sight. Everybody else, stay ready.”

Jimmy shouted after Boanagh as the darkling was already running toward the battle, and only a few feet away from the bend did the elder slow his steps as he came to a halt with his blade drawn. His stance was marred by the indecision and uncertainty that kept growing in him. It was further fanned by Jimmy's cautioning words and rational reasoning, and although the elder was worried that any further words would be too late, he listened to the adventurer who he had hired and did not proceed past the bend. At the same time as Loch retrieved the torch from Ilala and lit it, Tink launched himself off the warlock's shoulder and his raven body turned invisible mid-flight as he shot down the tunnel like Boanagh before him. His mission was to get eyes on the scene and to uncover the madwoman's trap, to disarm the words that Glynn was weaponizing against Boanagh's conscience.

While Jimmy called for the elder to find the words to talk to his people rather than go to help them, there were further noises heard from the campsite, though eerily far fewer sounds than before. "You devil!!!" A sylvan voice cried out shrilly, and then there was another incantation from Glynn which was followed by another flaring sound of combustion. Then the adventurer and his party heard many hastened steps entering the tunnel. Before Boanagh was able to overcome his bleeding heart, Jimmy channeled his eldritch magic as suddenly one of the little darklings burst around the corner, mounted on a feral-looking spider with a vicious dagger in the rider's hand, his face streaked with tears and twisted into a visage of hate. Boanagh jerked to attention, his smaller brethren steering the hog-sized spider right in the elder's direction down the tunnel. Glynn's voice echoed down the tunnel maliciously. "Oh no, my hand just slipped! They're all dead, adventurer!"

“Boanagh!” Jimmy cried as he heard the coming footsteps, his voice filled with concern and twice as much irritation. “Get back here, you idjit! You too, Tink!”

But it was too late; the first cavalryman was upon them – well, Boanagh, anyway; the darkling probably had no idea Tinkerbell was there. The darkling didn’t look quite right, and who knew what the Glynn-thing might have done to it, but none of that could be helped. Jimmy hesitated only a moment before firing two magical bolts at the rider. Only one hit, but it nearly killed the little jockey. “Pull back, dammit!” Jimmy reiterated. “But careful!

“Loch, with me,”
Jimmy ordered as he started to move a bit forward. “Start in on that spider. An’ take this,” he said, tossing him his slightly better than the Ram, even without proficiencyrapier, “in case things gets messy.

“Ladies, come up here and get ready. If that spider chases B, you charm it – and any others that come close enough!”
Jimmy was apparently getting something ready himself, if this darkling or any other showed any hostility.

OOCThe idea is:
1) Jimmy Readied EBs fire;
2) B and T disengage and retreat;
3) Jimmy, Loch, and the dryads advance as shown below;
4) Loch Vicious Mockery on spider;
5) dryads Ready charm on spider(s) entering range;
6) Jimmy Readies EBs for next hostile.

Here's how I see the final positions, after B and Tink pull back and the others advance.

This assumes that that B, T, and the enemy were all in the same row, which wasn't possible, especially because the spider is large, I believe. If B and T started closer to the party, then all the good guys would finish that much further back of what's shown. The important things are for the dryads to end up 25' from B (so 30' from a potential melee spider), and Loch and Jimmy end up at most 60' from the spider (for Loch's cantrip).

Now, if B refuses to retreat b/c goddam he's annoying, I guess I'll have to revise, including possibly using Jimmy's second set of rolls for a Readied action, since he doesn't want to kill the darkling while B is in range of the death flash (which I assume Jimmy knows about by now).

Surrender
left-aligned image

In battle a moment of hesitation could turn the tide, and as the skittering spider began its sprint down into the tunnel, Boanagh only had just enough time to brace himself for a possible mounted assault as the small darkling rider already shot around the bend. Jimmy at the same time was quick on the figurative draw as always, and so when the darkling popped into view, expression twisted in hate and desperation, the adventurer had already fired his eldritch energy before he realized that the rider's dagger never rose and never was pointed at Boanagh, as if the rider was about to ignore the elder and simply flee past him. That course of action was prevented however, because the blasts already slammed into the darkling's chest with enough force to actually bring the mount itself to a halt from the reverse acceleration. It was a near-deadly blow.

This time taking advantage of that moment of hesitation themselves, only now did Boanagh together with Tink disengage as the two of them headed back into the direction of their trusty formation. At the same time Jimmy ordered the dryads to seize control of the spider once it was upon them, and then the warlock readied another volley of eldritch projectiles that would end the rider's life if it came to it. But the darkling never spurred his spider back into movement, instead half-tumbling, half-dismounting from the huge spider's back where he fell to the ground and stayed cowering as his darkling blood dripped on the floor. "I surrender!!" He cried in elven. "Don't kill me, please don't kill me!!!" The spider mount still seemed stationary, apparently following whatever command of the rider had kept it there.

Dubious Present
left-aligned image

After the initial moment of Boanagh disturbing the formation and running ahead, Jimmy finally resumed full control over commanding his party members as the darkling elder ran back into position and Tinkerbell landed back on his master's shoulder. Loch was still poised with his fife, unsure if he was actually meant to harry the creatures down the tunnel with the subtle enchantments that his melody could produce. But for the moment Jimmy seemed to prefer a momentary ceasefire as he ordered the severely injured darkling to disarm, which the crooked little sylvan quickly complied with.

Against the half-elven warlock's expectations though, the darkling didn't appear to get back up to his hooved feet, and just as he began crawling in the direction of Jimmy's party, clearly in need of some medical aid after the horrible eldritch blast which had hit him right in the chest, a bulbous something suddenly floated around the bind and emerged right behind the stationary spider. The creature indeed very much looked like a beholder from its initial appearance, but it moved so slowly and had an odd lack of activity to it that immediately reminded Jimmy of his previous impression that it might indeed be some sort of plant-based creature which wasn't necessarily incredibly harmful to his knowledge.

For the moment at least the faux-beholder appeared somewhat innocuous as it filled up the tunnel with its fairly large body, and for that reason, Jimmy held the eldritch energy that was already channeling and concentrating on. However, as opposed to the adventurer's assessment and decision based on prudence, the spider mount didn't seem to agree that such a large unknown was floating up to it without posing any sort of danger, and so instinct quickly overrode any orders that its rider had given it. On its over-sized, skittering legs, it ducked away from the whispy tentacles that had been reaching somewhat in its direction as it took off.

On the whole eight of its legs, the spider flew down the tunnel and quickly overtook the darkling rider who didn't seem in any sort of condition to keep up with his fleeing mount. Jimmy couldn't rightly tell whether the dryads ended up attempting to charm the arachnid or not, but before the adventurer and leader of his party could give any further orders to the other sylvans, the surrendered darkling already cried out with frightened tears falling out of his white, eerie eyes. "Noo!! Don't shoot it!! Keep it away from me, please, I don't want to die!!!" The darkling was clearly afraid for his life and Boanagh let out a gasp as he looked for Jimmy to allow him to help his kin, but before the decision was reached there was already a wordless response echoing down the tunnel from behind the bend. It was Glynn, presuambly still at the campsite, and she only had to offer her uproarious laughter, altogether provocative, vexingly exhilarated, and utterly sadistic.

“Loch,” asked Jimmy, “go drag his butt outta there, wouldja?” Engaged as he was in the tense drama, Jimmy reflexively expressed his irritation with the darkling’s demand. “Protect you, but without shooting it,” he scoffed, “Gotcha. Anything else? – you want we should only use our feet?”

While grousing, Jimmy grabbed the net he had usually my pact weapon!long carried, but never used. The warlock stepped forward as Loch approached carrying the darkling like a medium sack of potatoes. “Let’s see what I can do here,” he said as he took a waiting position. “The rest of you, back off.

“And ladies, can you see what this thing wants, and – I dunno – convince it to forget it?”

Spore Explosion
left-aligned image

In the urgency of the moment, Jimmy directed his companions to stay back as he and Loch pushed ahead, the satyr heroically leaping forward on his bowed legs and the adventurer close behind with Tink helping him to ready his net that had once posed as one of Jimmy's signature weapons. But he wasn't going to get a chance to use it yet again. Just as soon as the two men started running for the wounded darkling's rescue, they could hear Glynn recede her laughter as she began reciting words not easily understood, though Jimmy realized immediately that she was casting another spell, similar to one that she had cast before. Just before the bulbous beholder plant had fully floated around the corner, Loch was just in time to snatch up the little sylvan from the ground as a blurry projectile shot out from behind the bend, struck the floating mass, and the satyr bard could barely leap out of the way with one reactive lunge as the beholder erupted in a violent explosion that would have enveloped Loch and the darkling for sure if the satyr hadn't been so quick on his feet.

The darkling had cried out in abject terror as the explosion occurred, but the cloud of floating, yellow-green particles quickly settled and left a faint coating on the tunnel's ground, walls, and ceiling. It was the final proof that the bulbous monster had been some sort of plant-based creature in truth, yet now little of it remained as it appeared to have been completely hollow despite its large circumference. The little dubh sidhe stopped shouting in panic after a moment when he realized that he had not been struck, and now he was panting wildly as he hung across Loch's shoulder like a bag of fae potatoes, if such a vegetable existed here in the colony. "That was close!" Loch looked at Jimmy with raised eyebrows, slightly out of breath as well. The response came from further down the tunnel, the echoes of Glynn's disappointed glee. "That missed? Boo~." But the following laughter conveyed that it hadn't ruined her macabre mood in the least.
