A Silence at MidnightGirgadan presses the Infirmarer on a few further points. "So the poison is widely available and the food would pass through several floors and past numerous doors to get here. Does the Abbot eat at the same time and place on a regular schedule or does it vary wildly and would only be know to a smaller group?" Hathrin spreads his hands. "The kitchens are on the level below. Cellarer Demmyrin may recall when and where the Abbot took his meals recently."

Bill backs out of the Abbot's chambers, intent on returning to the tunnel and the guard station. Confusion shows on Hathrin's face at Rhaegalt's mention of surprise guests. He turns toward Olin as if about to ask for an explanation, but the party is already on their way out the door with the junior monk trailing after. They pass doors on either side of the hall as they head to the stairwell, Girgadan reading the map of the third level as they go, then turning it over. The back of the map parchment is covered with scribbles, most of them just traces once written in charcoal and brushed away, but a few lines are in ink and still readable.

He reads What would you have me do?
A shakier script is below it. Send for impartial aid. I trust Lodd and Olin. There are others who may back us, but I am not certain of them. Likely Ithrak will, but the siblings disagree.

The party passes the second level, again hearing the sounds of a kitchen at work as they follow the spiral stairs, and circles down again to the ground level. Bill hears a rustling to the east and looks down the hallway, where an orcish monk emerges from a side room carrying a large basket under his arm. Just as he appears, a rat skitters out of a nearer room with a small potato held in its teeth. The orc monk snarls, breaks into a sudden sprint, and very precisely punts the rat the length of the hall. Both rat and potato fly by the party, smack into the archway leading to the tunnel, and drop to the ground. The orc monk startles as he notices the party peering out of the stairwell, and looks slightly embarrassed as he hurries by them up the staircase without a word. Olin nods to him as he passes, and says "That would be Brother Quroth."

The party steps over the dead rat and the squashed potato and turns right into the tunnel, this time heading to the northern end. The portcullis gates at both ends remain closed. The goblin nun they met earlier, Sister Pijjar, is at the northern gate with her back turned to them, looking out through the gaps in the iron grille. To one side is another mechanism room for raising and lowering the gate, to the other is a small guard station.

OODMEveryone is up. I'm assuming Deamiss is with the rest of the party and didn't take a detour toward the kitchen. Sorry about the delay in posting, I'm slammed at work.

Girgadan - map readingThe Half-Orc is quite surprised to see the Abbot lay plain his thoughts on some of the loyalties here, a risky and desperate gesture to leave such a permanent record.

"Brother Olin, are there brothers and sisters here? " Stupid, stupid - of course there are this place is full of them "Sorry, I mean in the blood or family sense you know"

"Hullo there, Sister Pijjar," says Bill, unintentionally hulking over her at five times her mass. "Can I trouble you for the logbook - just for the last few days, if you have it." Once it's in his hands, Bill quickly checks who was on watch in the preceding 24 hours.

"Ah, Brother Qur- nevermind..." the Half-Elf cuts off midsentence as the Orc dashes past the group and up the stairs. "Olin, even with the rat poison as deterent, how often are rats just scurrying around here?"

As the group approaches Sister Pijjar, Rhaegalt eagerly waits at Bill's elbow to read around his arm, as reading over the Orog's shoulder was out of the question.

A Silence at Midnight"Brother Olin, are there brothers and sisters here? Sorry, I mean in the blood or family sense you know." Girgadan's voice echoes in the tunnel as the party approaches the north gate. "By blood? Only Ithrak and Kthrak are related, at least we've always assumed so. They were left in a basket together at the north gate as infants, some thirty years ago as I recall."

Bill towers over the goblin nun, who has to push the hood of her robe back to look up at him. "Hullo there, Sister Pijjar, can I trouble you for the logbook - just for the last few days, if you have it." She nods and scurries into the guard station, returning with a bound sheaf of parchment marked in the middle with a strip of cloth. Opening it to the bookmark, Bill finds each day marked with three pairs of names for early, mid-day, and evening shifts, each pair of names with a space after it for notes. The current day is crossed out, a note along the side reading Gates to remain closed except by my orders - Barretti. The page before reads:

Crotho/Nedri
-gnolls of Grivin's pack - passage south to trade hides
-Ektrae south - almoning
Kthrak/Rachik
-Ektrae return
Frelk/Mott
-2 gnolls of Grivin's pack - passage north

Earlier pages look much the same, with notes like 2 kobolds - passage south to trade tin or 3 orcs of Krad's tribe to purchase mead, always with a matching return note if passage was granted. Demmyrin, Ektrae, and Hathrin seem to visit the village to the south regularly, and none of the abbey folk have gone north of the wall recently.

"Olin, even with the rat poison as deterent, how often are rats just scurrying around here?" Sister Pijjar lets out a snort, and Olin looks slightly embarrassed. "More often than we'd like. An unfortunate side effect of trading with the wild folk, I'm afraid." Pijjar points through the portcullis. "Filthy buggers, just look at 'em. Got no manners." The party looks through gaps in the iron grating and sees a complete contrast to the small but relatively orderly village south of the wall. To the north, another trail disappears down from the ridge. All around it are the remains of burned-out campfires littered with bones and sometimes feathers. A few of the camps are occupied, here three gnolls lounging by a rough tent, farther along a handful of goblins huddled around a smoldering fire. Olin shakes his head. "They do attract rats."

OODMSorry about the delay, back on course now that there's a break in the holiday madness.

Rhaegalt

"Ooh!" Rhaegalt blurts out while jabbing a finger into the paper. "It seems that Crotho and Nedri 'forgot' to take note of how many Gnolls came through the gate," the Half-Elf says with a wry smile. Turning to the Goblin he says, "Sister Pijjar, thank you for cooperating with us."

Facing back to Olin and the others, the Paladin lowers his voice a bit. "It seems we need to make our next moves carefully. It may be that both Crotho and Nedri were in on this ploy together; but if not then we might be able to catch one in a lie if we question them separately." Rhaegalt straightens up and rubs his chin, pondering the situation. "Nedri is just a novice and would likely have been given the order from someone else, whereas Crotho is a positioned monk and would have more at stake.

"I think that questioning the novice first would be our better move, but how does everyone else feel?"

Bill taps a hefty finger on the entry under “Crotho/Nedri.” “He said they’d come to trade,” he reminds the others. “Sister Pijar,” Bill asks, “do the stewards take shifts on watch? Or have I got this ledger mixed up?"

Bill rubs his chin as he listens to Rhaegalt. "That's a fine idea," he agrees, "and we should keep Nedri sequestered. Whether he talks or not, we can use him with Crotho."

"Interesting find there. Given you two are the current brains of this investigation I suggest I go and babysit the one that will be questioned last." Girgadan picks at a tusk pondering this and goes on "I could keep them busy with mindless questions about the coming and going of Gnolls and other wild assassins out there" and he waves at a wall at random to emphasize the outside

A Silence at MidnightReading through the logbook, Rhaegalt notes something missing. "It seems that Crotho and Nedri 'forgot' to take note of how many Gnolls came through the gate." He proposes questioning them both, starting with the novice. Behind the group, another ratskitters out of the east-side tunnel, stops in the middle of the tunnel and stands on its haunches looking at the party, and then scuttles away, squeezing under the door of the west-side arch.

Bill puts a finger on the same entry. "Sister Pijar, do the stewards take shifts on watch? Or have I got this ledger mixed up?" The little nun turns away from glaring at the gnolls and goblins beyond the gate and looks up at him. "It's always an officiant and a novice together on gate shifts in case something comes up. Us lowly novices don't get to make big decisions like, y'know, letting a couple kobolds through." Olin nods to confirm.

Rhaegalt and Bill agree on finding the novice Nedri first and keeping the suspect gate shift separated, and Girgadan suggests that he keep Crotho occupied while they talk to Nedri. Olin turns to the goblin nun. "Pijjar, what duties are they on today?" The little nun shrugs. "Not sure. Saw Nedri on the middle floor, likely kitchen or brewery. Ol' Crotho was goin' topside when I came down here." She returns to watching through the gate. A ways to the north, one of the gnolls seems to be returning her glare, staring steadily at the abbey wall.

Olin leads the group back into the east-side tunnel. "We should find Nedri somewhere on the second level. Girgadan, if you'd like to speak with Steward Crotho, just keep on past the third floor to the very top of the stairway. Look for an older half-elven man with black hair." He leads the party up a level and onto the second floor, directing Girgadan to continue on upward.

Second level Olin leads Rhaegalt, Bill, and Deamiss toward the sound of clattering kitchen utensils to the east, and turns south into a long narrow room warmed by fires and humid with steam. They recognize Brother Quroth who seems fully occupied with mashing turnips. A female orc stands at the far end, her hand wrapped in a thick cloth as she lifts the lid of a large cauldron that she's just hooked out from over a hearth fire, and in between is a young brown-haired half-elven woman, her back turned to the party as she sifts flour into a bowl of dough. Olin points out the half-elf, then clears his throat and the orc tending the stew turns his way. "Cellarer, could our guests borrow a moment of Sister Nedri's time?"

Atop the Wall Girgadan takes two more turns up the stairway. He hears a faint twanging of bowstrings and a steady thak...thakthak...thakthakthak from above before he emerges into sunlight and a steady cold wind blowing through the mountain pass. The top of the abbey is of nearly the same dimensions as the floor below, extending to the natural stone of the ridge rising at the east and west ends, looking out over the village to the south and the wildlands to the north over low crenellated walls. At the east end, a small temple is built against the stone of the ridge. To the west, several archery targets are set up, and three robed devotees of Torm are firing blunt practice arrows at the center target as quickly as they can nock them to their shortbows. They seem to hit center more often than not. One of the group notices him and whistles. All three stop firing, lay down their bows, and turn his way.

He sees a very thin half-elven man with black hair showing a few streaks of gray, a goblin woman of uncertain age, and a young blond human monk. The half-elf bows stiffly to him. "Ah, Lodd said we have guests. I am Brother Crotho, Steward of Highpass. This is our Cantor, Sister Ithrak, and Brother Mott, a novice in our order. May we help you?"

With the group decided on who is going where, Rhaegalt intentionally slows his walk to bring up the rear with Bill. "We need to be cautious with our questions, so that we can learn what we need but not let on that we suspect either of them. Obviously how many Gnolls came through, but also which one wrote in the logbook." Frowning in concentration, the Half-Elf poses the question, "can you think of additional prompts that might be beneficial? Does Nedri recall Crotho having an extended talk with the Gnolls?"

"Oh," Bill responds to Rhaegalt, mildly surprised. “That is a good point; we’ve probably got at least one liar here.” Bill frowned in consideration for a moment. He often struggled to navigate the precarious waters of conversation, so interrogation all the more. Then his face brightened - if one could accurately judge that on his foreign features – as he had an idea. “We should probably ask about things generally at first – keep our cards close to our chest, y’know.”

Nodding in agreement as the two keep the slower pace, the Half-Elf voices his approval of the idea. "Yes, perhaps asking about the general runnings of the abbey lately before talking about the log entry." They increase their speed to not be left behind the rest of the group.

As Olin makes the introductions, Rhaegalt Persuasion roll of 10tries to put on a warm smile. "Sister Nedri, thank you for giving us a moment of your attention during these troubled times. Hopefully the recent events haven't been too troubling for you. In the few days leading up to the Abbot's poisoning, was there anything that you noticed being off? Anyone behaving differently that usual? Or was the day-to-day the same as usual?"

A Silence at Midnight

Atop the Wall"Greetings Brothers and Sisters. I am Girgadan from West marches and on arriving I was surprised to hear about your Abbot and the terrible circumstances surrounding his death. Would you mind if I joined you in your in practice? I am no good with a bow, more a Javelin thrower, but perhaps you can give me some tips and tell me more about this place?"

Steward Crotho shows no emotion at all at Girgadan's mention of the Abbot. Mott looks away and grief shows in Ithrak's eyes. "Certainly, join us. Mott, gather up the arrows and we'll take another round with our guest." The novice goes to pick up the shafts scattered around the targets.

"Most tragic about Abbot Aerlin, he will be missed. Are you a follower of Torm, Girgadan?" Crotho walks to the north battlement and waves a hand toward the camps beyond the abbey wall. "This place? It is a relic of more dangerous times, I believe. We once defended the southlands from the wildfolk, but the wildfolk no longer come in force. And if they did, we would be hard pressed to raise much of a defense ourselves. Our numbers have declined with the waning of the threat, even as the number of settlers to the south has grown. I think them well capable of manning the wall without our aid if there was ever need for it again. I think it a waste of resources and talent that we pen ourselves up in this bleak fortress when we could be among the people we serve. The world changes around us. Our duty must change with circumstance."

Crotho faces north throughout his brief speech, but Girgadan senses that the Steward intends to be heard more by the other monks than himself. Mott sets a sheaf of practice arrows in a basket, shaking his head. "Ought to push north if you ask me. Getting crowded south, there's more farmland up there. That's all there is to it."

Sister Ithrak looks displeased with both of them, but the goblin woman says nothing. She just watches Girgadan to see his reactions, then hands him a shortbow, picks up her own, and takes a shot at the center target.

In the Kitchen"Sister Nedri, thank you for giving us a moment of your attention during these troubled times. Hopefully the recent events haven't been too troubling for you. In the few days leading up to the Abbot's poisoning, was there anything that you noticed being off? Anyone behaving differently that usual? Or was the day-to-day the same as usual?" The half-elven woman turns around at Rhaegalt's greeting and suddenly looks distinctly uncomfortable, though that could be because she finds herself facing three strangers who all tower over her and outweigh her by a combined quarter ton. Sister Demmyrin and Brother Quroth trade glances with each other but continue with their work. Olin nods to all three.

"Off? I don't think so, not before the Abbot fell sick. Everything's been off since then. Everyone's nervous." Sister Demmyrin grunts. "More gnolls around than usual for a while." Brother Quroth nods in agreement. "Don't have to look outside to know that. Bloody rats everywhere."

Bill nods in understanding of Sister Nedri's complaint. "We heard that the rats travel with 'the wild folk,' you call 'em?

"Do you have to deal with these gnolls much? They aren't known to be agreeable. I'm a little surprised it isn't open war with them."
