Your discussion continues into the early evening as the sun begins to set over Sandpoint's harbor. At some point, it becomes clear to you that whatever decision you make isn't going to happen in the middle of the night, so slowly the conversation moves towards more mundane matters. You learn that the sheriff was born and raised in the Shoanti Skull Clan. He found living in one spot rather than constantly roaming the wilderness more to his liking. He misses his tribe, at times, but there's been a lot of bad blood between the Shoanti and the Chelish settlers over the years and going back for just a visit isn't really possible. Belor does have a brother that stays in town, and though the brother says that he stays as a part of his elderly brother duties, Belor suspects that his brother was forced to leave because of the sheriff's actions.

At some point, the sheriff takes his leave. "I have to be going for the final bonfire. It should start in just a few minutes back in the churchyard. I trust you all will be attending?"

"The Goblins will eat just about anything, but they seem particularly partial to Rat, for some reason... his boss had the "brilliant" idea of bringing Goblins in to deal with the City's growing Rat population...."

"Meh!" Skones made a dismissive noise, either at the idea of a 'rat problem' or of goblins 'dealing with' said problem. Imagine just the thickest Brooklyn accent"Yeah, youse wonder why we ain't so keen on diplomacy. Rats are good for a city's... whatcha call it... for a city's environment. We clean out the sewers and landfills and such, make things all pretty for the rest o' ya. All goblins are good for is stabbin' ya in the rear."

"If it helps, yeah I'll go to your fire thing. Just don't be fallin' in or anything. Eh? Eh?" He makes grubby little finger-guns while he waits for the joke to land, and moves on after the silence. "If thinkin' we're in alliance will scare'em off, maybe we can get an alliance. Maybe spruce up the place with some flags and whatnot."

UtanaI'll show them force... Utana thought. It wasn't meant to be wholly anti-goblin, but she definitely thought it was after she thought it. They should be afraid of us, I guess. Awed by our might. Maybe let some of my family's guns get into the hands of the locals... She continues to think, on her way to get chowder, as was recommended. "I hope they're already afraid of us. Too many people and all. But in a village like this, they may see complacence. If I could get my family's approval, we could easily arm the locals and really strike fear into their hearts so the goblins will work for them."

Piper did not contribute much to the rest of the conversation, simply content to remain within the small group as they asked questions of the sheriff, though she did sit slightly further apart from most of the others, as though wary of anyone getting too close. She thought briefly about asking the sheriff if any strange new folk were seen about town, but after glancing about the conversation companions she found herself with she realized that line of questioning was likely fruitless.

When the sheriff got up and asked if they would follow to the bonfire, she nodded quietly and got up to follow the Shoanti man to the churchyard. As she walked through the gathering darkness of the night, she glanced up at a sound of flapping wings heard briefly overhead, but the night sky did not reveal anything but stars.

Tristan has little to provide except for small talk when it comes to the lunch table conversation, allowing the tourists their opportunity to get to know Belor. He focuses on the free food, and tries not to let his eyes roll completely out of his head as he listens to some of the conversation roll past. Philosophizing about the value of rat and goblins is not how Tristan tends to spend his free time, and finds the moralizing somewhat irritating, but lacks the articulation or interest in trying to interject his much more pragmatic opinions.
The social call does come to a merciful end, however. Standing when Belor does, Tristan straps his sword back on trying with marginal success to suppress a wry smile when Utana suggests the locals would need any assistance in arming themselves. "I'll be there." he adds, "Gramps has decided the whole family will have to show. I should probably check to see how sober Dad is, though."

"Does your family really have the power to arm and train the town folk? Fear is what works best with goblins keeping them at bay. They are gutless creatures only attack when they can ambush and outsize who they are attacking."

"If you wish Sheriff, I'd be happy to attend." As the Sheriff leaves and looking back at the others. "Alliance aye, we could just make our own group here and go see about Skones problem firsthand and decide from there whether we can negotiate or knock heads."

Back near the church, the crowds have again started to gather around the temporary stage. Upon it, a massive amount of wood has been stacked into a tower overlooking the immediate area. Vendors are walking amidst the people, selling last minute snacks for the bonfire and small, low quality sunrods. The sheriff, mayor, and other speakers from this morning are standing off to the side of the stage.

Tristan has found his father slumped against a lone tree, barely coherent in speech and completely unable to stand on his own. "Hell of a party! he says. Remind me, who's getting married? While he tries to get his father under control, his grandfather Ethram approaches him. "I had hoped to see more of you at the festival, but some other family members told me you spent most of the day talking with Sheriff Hemlock and some...interesting...foreigners. Are you thinking of returning to the guard? If I recall correctly, this is the longest you've stayed in public in a long time." Ethram suddenly erupts into a coughing fit, he puts a bloodstained hankerchief to his mouth as more crimson stains are added to the piece of fabric.

Father Zantus takes center stage, raising a thunderstone in his hand. He throws the stone down and it shatters, silencing the ground with a crash of its namesake. However, a woman screams and interrupts the priest before he can speak. Turning towards the sound, you see a woman pointing towards a hunched shadow. It steps closer into the light to reveal a goblin. It is dressed in shoddy leather armor and carries and short blade and shield in roughly the same condition. The weapon drips fresh blood and you can see the corpse of a dog behind the little monster. The animal's throat has been cut.

Out of respect, Skones did his best to keep his head about the goblins. This sheriff is a man of the law, doing his best, and hollering isn't going to get anyone anywhere. Then, as the night progressed, there was a scream. And there, bold as brass in the middle of the square, was a goblin slaughtering a dog. And there were more. This wasn't some random rogue. This was an attack! "A'right, that's it! Hyah, Kugritch!" He heeled his giant rat into action, making a beeline for the nearest one he could reach. He drew his pistol, corrected his aim from long practice firing from rat-back, and Nat 20 (27) to hit, 25 to confirm, 35 damage (9 base x4)pulled the trigger.

The bullet buries itself in the goblin's chest. The creature crashes to the ground as blood soaks into its primitive leathers.

PiperPiper quickly spotted the goblin stepping out of the darkness, then another and another. The elven woman felt her heart beat faster, this could be it, is this how my family was killed? Goblins in the dark? Well, they won’t take me so easily.

She shook her head, tossing her hood off so she could see better, long vibrant red hair looking like fire in the glittering light of the campfires and torches that illuminate the darkening market. "Vol!" she calls out as she gazes up at the sky. The sound of beating wings fills the hair as a bird swoops out of the darkening sky to land on her shoulder. It’s big for a bird, and doesn’t fit on just one shoulder, landing on both shoulders heavily as if getting a piggyback ride from the slender elven woman, the force of his landing staggering her for just a moment. The bird looks like some kind of eagle, but stands over 4 feet tall as it surveys the market from its perch. "Ugh, watch the hair Vol! And watch those talons!" Piper shouts up at the bird as it seems to gently adjust its position on her shoulders. "Let’s show these vermin what you can do Vol," she mutters as she reaches up to a taloned foot, "Ketephys, guide these talons, guide this hunt!" she says in a nervous but firm voice, echoing the old words she had heard her father say so many times. She feels a surge of magical power flow through her fingers, and into Vol as his talons give off a brief glow of power.

The conversation with his grandfather having wrapped up in time for them to watch the priest give his speech, the sound of the thunderclap is expected, but the woman's scream was not. Tristan frowns as his eyes dart around for the problem. A lecherous man? A mouse? A goblin! His first thought is of the rat-man, and all the day's conversation about goblins, ready to admonish him for bringing it here, somehow. It took a moment to realize that made no sense, especially as more goblins pop up in the crowd.
"Grandfather, get dad out of here!" He shouts it more loudly than he intends, already buzzing from the anticipation of the fight ahead. Goblins, he's dealt with them before, in the forest, as part of a larger hunt, not in a crowded city street nearly alone. Pulling the shield over his shoulder he takes the center grip, and draws the sword from his belt in his right hand. "Goblin!" He bellows, this time intentionally crying out as loud as he can, to be heard over the din of panic and other noise such as Skones' insufferably loud weapon. "Alarm! Goblins! Take arms or flee! Take arms or flee! Goblins!" Tristan is doing the opposite of fleeing, instead he is racing towards the nearest goblin. Even as he goes for it, the creature falls to the ground dead, but there are more to fight and with both the rat-man and Piper already in the fray, he continues to move in their direction - setting themselves up to gang up on the goblins and not running out to get caught alone and surrounded. He pauses at the corner of the stall, planting himself as an obvious adversary, shield up, sword held over the top of the round edge, point toward the goblin.

One of the goblins on the eastern side of the courtyard rushes towards where Ethram Valdemar, Tristan's grandfather, is struggling to pick his drunken son up out of the street. The other one jumps onto the stall and begins to devour the pastries of some poor baker.

When confronted by Tristan, the third goblin hesitates for half a second before grabbing a piece of well-crafted pottery off Hasim's stall and whipping it at Tristan's head.
Dice Thrown Weapon:
1d20-1 (11)-1 Total = 10

He moves his face out of the way and the souvenir crashes somewhere behind him.

The final goblin disappears underneath Hasim's stand. It's hand and face reappear from under the decorative cloth covering the wooden table. A makeshift blade swings at the merchant priest.
Dice Dogslicer:
1d20+2 (16)+2 Total = 18

Dice damage:
1d4 3

The metal cuts down the side of the Hasim's leg, drawing from him a small stream of blood.

Goblin Attack

Azrael looks to the closest Goblin to him and puts a Slumber DC 16hex on him to take out of combat.

::So much for waiting for discussion with goblins::

"I guess this answers the question about whether the goblins are aggressive."

Azrael stays back and loads his crossbow.

"Honest" Hasim

"Oi! That's my Stock!" A startled Hasim shouted at the Goblin which had decided to start throwing pottery.

"Ow! That's my leg!" He shouted at another Goblin, scant seconds later.

This is bad! He understatedly thought. If I'm not quick, then I could lose...ALL my stock! Abadar Save Me! I may even make a LOSS today!

He takes a step away from the Goblin that hurt him, and addressed all the townsfolk and visitors who were putting up a fight.

"Good Folk! As a representative of Abadar, I would like to invest in you all!"

A glow lights up like a large circle in the square, with Hasim in it's centre, almost as though the sun had caught the reflection of a gigantic gold coin. All those caught in it's light felt bolstered, as though a strange force was All allies within 50' of Hasim gain a +1 Morale Bonus to attack and fear based will save rolls - Duration: 1 minuteurging them on!

That couldn't have gone any better! It was probably more satisfying than it should've been, but no matter. He genuinely didn't believe that these goblins could be reasoned with, and this attack only confirmed his position. Trudging forward, he took aim at another. It definitely hit, but 1 piercingdidn't appear to have done a lot of damage.
