Apparently my creative juices are flowing freely this morning, as I was able to bang out an idea for a submission right off the bat. Unfortunately, it's about a thousand words long...so what resemblance it will have to whatever I ultimately submit, remains to be seen.

Hi, Dworin! Thanks for asking. Excited that you might be interested in joining the event!
Coding does not count, unless you are placing something into the [TT] tags--those words absolutely count.
There is a link in the rules descriptions to the word counter program we will be using for the official count. If that program says you are at or under, then you're good.

“Newbie in da House” Ok here goes! Creative juices were flowing yesterday after just finishing off two character apps for new games over the weekend, so got this written up, edited and formatted as it was pouring rain all day, went to sleep dreaming; “What is the best word; big, large, huge, enormous, giant, immense, massive… Zzzzz… Fieldsets…Zzzzz”. Hardest thing was the 500 word limit, as I found myself 2 hours in and at 700 words, zero mechanics & no titles/sections at all, and even when it was down to size, spent hours swapping single words, as every word (when you only have 500 for everything) counts! Hope the Judges are ok with the couple of sneaky add-in’s and they don't disqualify me. My wife says I should wait the 10 days before posting, but if I do I will obsess and lose sleep over it, editing a word here a word there, over and over… And I have a cord of wood to split and stack today so words floating around my head is not the safest thing when playing with the log splitter. 499 words, no looking back, as I typically hate editing posts, so I Contractions are one word right? :-)won’t.
