Sure footed as ever, Tekarch stubbornly remained upright as the mass of skeletons crashed upon him like a tidal wave. Time to see if my work on short cutting has paid off, he thought to himself. Soon enough, he discovered with elation that it had, for whereever the horde gave his arms the slightest reprieve Tekarch's blades lashed out, answering the battering they inflicted by carving bloody swathes of his own.

Holy Light
Tekarch lashes out with great ferocity smashing bones with every strike, even biting onto bones where her can. For a moment everything is quiet, the bones litter the ground and you are safe. You turn to look at the two men who stayed at your side and there is little you can do for such horrible damage.

The light of the moon seems to shine a more radiant silver this eve, no that is not the moon, a single silvery ball of holy light descends slowly upon the men. A soft voice whispers, "Wake up, the new morning comes soon."

The wounds on the men fade away and their bodies are fully healed. They lie there resting and the silvery light seems to pause, there are no eyes on it and yet, it feels like it is judging the two of you. "By mortal hands was the rift opened, for mortal souls she nearly died, mortal hands must wake her before mortal hearts fall."

After those odd/prophetic statements the being is gone. Joseph Freeman and Timothy Wheaton slowly rise, each pressing their fingers at holes in their clothes where lethal wounds ought to be.

"By mortal hands was the rift opened, for mortal souls she nearly died, mortal hands must wake her before mortal hearts fall," Tekarch repeated, committing the message to memory, then made the sign of the Goddess and offered a quick prayer of thanks.

After completing the prayer, Tekarch opened his eyes and the first thing he did was shake vigorously in an attempt to dislodge at least some of the ichor that coated him. Then he walked over to the two villagers and offered them a hand up. "It's over. How do you feel?"

Ruslan Mancinus
right-aligned image

Administering a final thrust as the bones clatter to the ground, Ruslan turns and feels immense sorrow for the two brave men that stood with them. Their ghastly wounds are immediately evident they did not survive their ordeal.

As the moonlight breaks, Ruslan sheathes his rapier and turns to tell Tekarch they should bury the men with honor when suddenly there is far more illumination than he expects out of the corner of his eye, he sees the silvery ball settle near the men and speak of the new morning. Suddenly the fallen are healed of their wounds, and Ruslan feels as if they are in the presence of a divine being.

Wordlessly he stares at the ball, which almost seems to be looking at him. It then speaks - "By mortal hands was the rift opened, for mortal souls she nearly died, mortal hands must wake her before mortal hearts fall." Ruslan has no idea what it means but before he can even process it, the light suddenly disappears and the men start to rise.

Ruslan, however, is still in shock over what he has seen. In almost a whisper, he asks "...What in the name of the good spirits was that?"

Their answers
Joseph Freeman says, “The goddess maybe as the daughter of spring?”

Timothy Wheaton agrees, “Aye daughter of spring for sure not the mother of summer, lady of autumn, or grandmother winter that’s for sure.”

The knighthood only recognizes the goddess as Justice and Mercy but, many others have different views. Common folk have their own worship of the goddess in four forms: Daughter of Spring, Mother of Summer, Lady of Autumn, and Grandmother Winter. There is little debate that it is the same goddess while there is much debate on just how she should be worshipped with peasants assuming that the knights simply Venerate Grandmother winter (justice) and the Daughter of Spring (mercy) more than the Mother of Summer and Lady of Autumn.

Meanwhile Tekarch is quite sure they were briefly visited by a Lantern Archon though, clearly, granted more power than is usually said such beings have. Many people believe that angels are running the heavens for the goddess with most religious folk believing she sleeps from her injuries and heretics suggesting she’s dead.

Tekarch hated to rain on the young men's enthusiasm, but he knew it would be for the best to set them straight. "Not the Goddess Herself, but one of Her servants. That was a Lantern Archon, a lesser celestial being. Kind of like angels, but weaker," he explained.

"They're often used as messengers by the higher powers. Or at least they were, before the weave started weakening. Krrch! But I've never heard an account of one healing mortal injuries like that. I can channel the power of the Goddess to heal wounds too, but those you had were far beyond my ability.

"Speaking of which, how are you doing?"
Tekarch asked Ruslan.
