Hobbytown
I was curious as to what kind of hobbies everyone has other than the various games on the forum and whatnot~ I personally like to do artsy things like draw and paint, but also writing and random splashes of little craft things. Feel free to share pictures! I'd love to see them~ Last edited by InfamousDasher; Jan 13th, 2020 at 04:11 PM. |

Learning to play the piano! I started relatively late in life, at about 28 years old. I doubt I'll ever be a master. But about 30 minutes of practice most mornings has seen a lot of progress over these last three years. ![]() For quite a while (5 years or so...) I was reading the Great Books of the Western World with gusto and dedication, along with The Story of Civilization. The past year or so it's really slowed down quite a bit... I want to read them, and when I do I get a lot out of them. I think that a lot's going on in the world that's just generally been a turn-off for enthusiastically learning. Or maybe I'm just getting older and don't have as much energy and enthusiasm anymore!

Music. Been in bands more or less for the last 20 years although not much as been happening for two years or so I just got a call to check some stuff out from an old bandmate, who knows where that leads, perhaps I'll be back screaming into the mic again soon.
Fly Fishing. But it's expensive here in Iceland. If you want to go fishing in a decent salmon/trout river we're talking about 300-400 USD being the minimum for the day. But I try and go fishing in smaller rivers, lakes etc. when I get the time, but it's only around 4-5 month window from late spring to early autumn that you can easily fish around these parts. Nothing clears my mind and soothes the soul more than standing waist deep in water early on a summer morning working that line. Miniature painting. I recently dug out my 20 year old warhammer figures from the storage, most of them not even assembled and started painting again, need to give this one a lot of time and practice because currently I suck at it! Gamenight with my friends: RPG's, Boardgames etc. Gamenight with family: Boardgames. Just got my two kids into D&D and I'm currently running them through Phandelver. |

This is a nice little thread. I assume gaming of several varieties goes without saying. I also listen to podcasts nonstop, but there's another thread for that.
Pottery: My "main" hobby is this. I've got a wheel and a kiln, and I make my own stuff at home. I'm pretty new, still, but getting better. I'm now learning how to make glazes from "scratch". It's really fun (and frustrating) to take literal raw elements like Iron and Calcium and Cobalt (plus those pesky carbons and oxygens) and combine them in a way that makes something new and interesting and even beautiful. Two of my better recent works are spoilered below: A coffee mug in "midnight sky" (a glaze I made), and a tall flagon in a toasty brown. There are also examples of a few colored with nickel, cobalt, Chromium, and rutile (which is titanium with a little iron)glaze recipes that I'm currently testing. Beer Brewing: Yes I'm male. Yes I'm 41. Yes I have a beard and live in the midwest. What's your point? Bread baking: Of the sourdough variety. The solid form of beer, you know. Fermenting is fun! I also make my own sauerkraut a few times per year. I've taken a few bread classes so far, and I'm on track to take a few more. Gardening: I've got hops vines, plus a vegetable & herb garden. Also some decorative stuff. But between my utilitarian attitude towards gardening, plus the Forever War I am engaged in with deer, the decorative stuff I can keep alive is mostly tall grasses and stinky / poison flowers (like daffodils). My vegetable garden has an impenetrable 6 foot fence and is directly outside my living room window so that I can maintain eternal vigilance.

Wynamoinen: I like a good sourdough. I'm obsessed with Boudin out here in San Francisco. It's the best I personally have tasted!
My hobbies are reading. Almost any spare time I have is spent with my Kindle inches from my nose! Also Marvel and SciFi, not just Star Wars and Star Trek, but a little bit of everything. From Science that works like magic to the HARD SciFi that can bore some people to tears with the minutia of how the science "works" I'm also building an addition to my house for the last couple of years... almost done, doing most of it myself/with the family. And I'm in IT, not construction ![]()

To be fair, there's an IT in construction.

Sourdough: Another hobby baker here! All things sourdough are fun and tasty
![]() ![]() Reading: Probably not unexptected for a lot of us here I'd wager. Mostly fantasy and I have a tendency for big books, long series with lots of worldbuilding and character development opportunities. Miniature Painting: After a few years of a break I recently started painting some of my WH40K stuff again. It's still fun ![]() Youtube and Twitch-Streaming: This one less so over the last few months, but I still have my Youtube channel with lots of Blood Bowl 2 videos and other stuff. I really need to get back into streaming regularly again. Not that I ever had much of a following ![]()

I would love to take up woodworking, but I've never been good at thinking in 3D. That being said, I bet the workshop smells amazing! |

I love the piano! I tried my hand at playing when I was younger, but got super embarrassed when I tried to play in front of a couple family members and stopped playing for good lol. I'm so envious of those that can play any kind of instrument. I just feel goofy trying lol I don't think there's such a thing as being too old to learn. Just, the world makes it difficult because of how filtered books are in each country. One side is always made to sound better than the others when in actuality...they all suck at some point. |
