The Village of Eastpass

Recruiting replacement players
Now seeking replacement players!

We have had a few drop outs and one of the partys is now a few players short. I am looking to recruit 1 -3 replacement players to round out the party.

The successful applicants will be joining the home 'grown heroes' group. The group is currently made up off 'adventurous youths' from the village who have headed out to the surrounding countryside based on rumours of goblin's ambushing merchant caravans and traveller's in the region.

You will be joining;

Brian Medvedev - Human Cleric of Lathander
Actually Vohja ShadowduskSomin Caj'Demyr - Actually a changelingHuman Wizard / Cleric
Alia Ibn Abbas - Human Rogue

The game thread can be found here to see what has happened so far

Starting level is still level 2

Plot Summary
The Village of Eastpass
The Village of Eastpass

SynopsisThe villagers of Eastpass are a hardy folk, the land is rugged, crops are not easy to raise and the winters are harsh. This however is the least of the villagers worries as the land around the Eastpass is home to a number of dangerous animals; wolves, mountain lions and bears all call this land home. The animals are not the only threat however as the foothills, mountains and various dark places are home to goblins, orcs and other wicked creatures. Eastpass however endures partly thanks to the fact that it lies on a trade road between Sundabar and Citadel Adbar and merchant caravans often pass through it. The meat, milk and woolen goods that it produces are also a desired commodity and the small village does well from trade.

Starting Location/ detailsThe game starts in Eastpass village a tiny and remote village in the Silver marches that is located on a road that heads east from Sundabar. The village itself is a small farming community that specialises in breeding a hardy breed of goat, though they also grow a few hardy crops aswell (such as the Silver potato which is in fact more grey in colour) . Other than the farms the village consists of little more than a few houses, shops a single inn by the name of the Giddy Goat and a small church of Lathander. The village is also home to a number of trappers and prospectors who while not permanent residents often use the village as a base. The village has a small militia consisting of volunteers though they are far from the most organised force.

Eastpass is a small village with a number of small farmsteads dotted around the area. The center of the village is home to the largest and most noteworthy buildings.
  • The largest and only stone building in the village is a small church to Lathander called Winter’s dawn. The church is run by Dawnbringer Jacob Parson an elderly priest who still resists the rigors of age. The priest is assisted by a few junior members of the clergy including his granddaughter Elia Parson.
  • Eastpass Hall – A large wooden building that from the outside resembles a simple warehouse but actually serves as the village hall and the home of the Mayor Bran Goodman. A middle-aged and portly man.
  • The Giddy Goat is the village’s only official inn. The Inn is run by Gerrad Lackman, his wife Louisa and his three daughters Anna, Lara and Beth.

The PartyThe characters represent a newly formed and relatively inexperienced adventuring party. They may be locals of Eastpass who are looking to try their hand at adventuring for the first time or perhaps they have served as caravan guards for one of the trade caravans that has brought them to Eastpass. Perhaps they have just stopped at Eastpass by pure chance on their way to somewhere else.

Game Concept / What I am looking forThe concept of this game is to follow the journey of a good old fashioned traditional d&d party from their very beginnings as they gain experience and grow in to a well established and noteworthy party. The game uses the Village of Eastpass as the characters base of operations (atleast to begin with). While there is a plot written for this game the world is somewhat of a sandbox so you are free to take whatever action your characters would take and I will adapt the plot accordingly.

I prefer a party with a leaning towards good though any character alignment is allowed as long as the character is not too disruptive to the game or ruins the game for the rest of the party.

I hope to select 4-6 members for the adventuring party.

Eastpass Village - Eastpass village a tiny and remote village in the Silver marches that is located on a road that heads east from Sundabar. The village is also home to a number of trappers and prospectors who while not permanent residents often use the village as a base. The village has a small militia consisting of volunteers though they are far from the most organised force.

Gradel's Point - A relatively newly founded mining village located northwest of Eastpass near the base of the Rauvin mountains. The mining village employs a company of mercenaries for protection due to the large number of goblins in the area.

Bank - A small fishing village that is located to the west of Eastpass on the banks of the river ice spear.

Westfork - A medium sized agricultural village located east of Eastpass that has a number of farms and orchards. The center of the village is protected by a wooden palisade and the village itself is protected by a well organised militia.

Deadsnows - A large village to the east of Eastpass that lies in an alpine valley on the northern side of the Nether mountains. Deadsnows is best known as a gold mining village, however during the winter months Deadsnows can become completely cut off due to heavy snow.

Newfort – Newfort is a is a small hamlet roughly halfway between Sundabar and Eastpass Village. The Hamlet is almost entirely made from wood and its citizens are said to be foreigners who only recently settled in this part of the world.

The Fork – While not a true settlement the intersection between the Fork road and the Adbar road is now home to a lone inn The Wildlands Rest.

Sundabar - A large dwarven built fortress city that is west of Eastpass. The city is circled by double walls and an icy moat that is rumored to be filled with man eating eels making it highly defensible city.Sundabar also has a large highly trained army known as the Shieldsar. The city contains a large temple of Tyr and a large temple of Helm. Though once a Dwarven city Sundabar is now home to a large number of both humans and dwarves and the ruling Master is now a human by the name of Helm Dwarf-friend. While the humans are most numerous in the city itself the undercity is mostly populated by dwarves.

Citadel Adbar - A large dwarf built fortress that lies North East of Eastpass. This giant stone city constantly belches smoke and steam from it’s many forges and foundries. The citadel is still exclusively dwarven and ruled by the Dwarf king Harbromm. Citadel Adbar is home to one of the largest forces of soldier in the north the Iron Guard. The Iron Guard protects the land around Citadel Adbar covering the area of a full days travel in all directions. Outsiders are rarely allowed inside the city itself though trade is welcome outside the city. Citadel Adbar is well known for its mines and forges aswell as the skill of it's craftsmen.

Silverymoon. - A large city to the west of Sundabar that is known as the Gem of the North. Silverymoon is one of the largest, wealthiest and most important cities in the silver marches. Silverymoon is a bustling city filled with trees and stone buildings and a large number of races call the city home. The city itself is ruled by the High Lady Alustriel and protected by the Knights in Silver. The Knights in silver regularly patrol around the city for a full seven days ride. Silverymoon is protected by more than just walls and soldiers and it is rumoured that the city is protected by powerful magical wards that keep the city and it’s people safe. The city is home to a large number of temples and shrines including ones to Oghma, Milil, Helm, Mielikki, Lathander and Selune. The city is also home to Mage’s schools and guilds, a bardic college and a great library. It is also rumored that the Harpers have a base of operations in Silverymoon.

Geographical Sites

The Nether Mountains – To the south of Eastpass lies the Nether mountains, these dark and brooding mountains are said to be home to a large number of orcs. Those brave enough to explore the peaks have also reported siting of ogres and dragons higher up the peaks.

The Rauvin Mountains – To the north of Eastpass lies the Rauvin Mountains, the purple hued mountains are plagued by both goblins and orcs.

Rainbow Gorge – This Gorge is the point at which the river Rauvin cuts through the Rauvin mountains. It is home to an impressive waterfall and the most direct route through the mountains however the area is teeming with orcs and only the bravest or most foolhardy would choose to take such a route.

Questions and Answers

Q: Can I play a Dread Necromancer?

A: I am not going to outright ban this however your application will have to be a really good one. Your application will also need to show how your character could work as part of an adventuring party. NPC reactions in game to your character will likely be extremely negative as your character is literally turning themselves in to an undead.

Q: Can I play an Artificer?

A: Artificer is acceptable if it has a suitable backstory.

Q: Can I take Vows of Poverty/Peace/Non-violence Feats?

A: This is fine however you will need a good background to explain the sacred vow that your character has taken. I would advise against taking too many vows (one or two usually works best). Also be aware that the actions of the party can affect your vows.

Q: Will the game be combat Heavy or roleplay heavy?

A: I am aiming for a good mix between Roleplay and Action (action might night necessarily only be combat it could include traps, skill challenges etc). The intention however is for the game to be story driven and not a mindless hack and slash.

Q: What sort of posting rate are you hoping for?

A: 2-3 posts a week is a good starting point though may adjust it up or down based on the desires of the successful group.

Q: I know nothing about the Forgotten Realms world. Is that a disqualifier?

A: Knowledge of forgotten realms is not a requirement.

Q:How are you dealing with races that have a LA? Buyoff? Some other way?

A: As the game starts at level 2 only races with a max of +1 LA are viable. If you mean these rules then yes LA Buy off would be acceptable.

Q:What is the deadline for when this app needs to be done?

A:Once the game thread has been created I will post the application deadline. You've got atleast a week though. Most likely the end of the month. (31/10/2021)

Q: Are character sheets required as part of the application?

A: No character sheets will not be required until after the successful party have been chosen.

Q: Will traits /flaws be allowed?

A: Traits and flaws will most likely be allowed however I will discuss these on an individual basis during character creation.

Name: Vohja Shadowdusk ("Somin Caj'Demyr")
Race: Changeling
Class: Wizard 1/Cleric 1

Description: Vohja’s natural form is lean and pale, with flesh of a soft pallor akin to the curling bark of birch trees, his eyes milk-white, and hair of a similar shade of bleached bone.

In his favored identity, Vohja stands just an inch over six feet tall, with scarlet hair of the hue of autumn leaves burned against the backdrop of sunset. His eyes are a lovely muddle of rich jade steeped in softening smoke-gray, as though the illicit trades of mercenary lineage had seeped through his bloodline into his irises. His skin fair, hair falling thick to the backs of his shoulders. Like any teenager, he's still very much exploring his own appearance and style, and has taken of late to growing a little chin scruff, and favoring black roots to lend the impression his hair is 'dyed' red. He wears a fine silver chain around his neck, the end of which disappearing into his shirt and containing a vial of ashes taken from the ruins of Shadowdusk Hold; the only thing left to him of his birth mother.

Personality: Vohja is inherently inquisitive and exploratory, his nature inclined toward pushing the envelope (a consequence of both privilege in upbringing and natural protean advantages) and the intoxicating game of social interaction. Glib, well read and prone alternately to extroversion and brooding, he loves long conversations with interesting people as much as curling up with a favored book at one of the Giddy Goat's old wooden tables.

Perhaps because of his family’s tainted legacy, he is rigorously devoted to deeply internalized and consistent principles, even if those principles sometimes fly in the face of normal moral convention; without a respectable family name to orient identity and self-worth with, he's become very much grounded in exploration of his own uncertain moral tenets. He is very much a young man born of rules and a sense of obligation to fulfill one's duties; his word is his oath, and his feet have well-worn the path between the spirit and the letter of the law.

He is well aware of what his family has lost, and the price of the gamble that ultimately led to the turning away of collective Waterdhavian nobility when the Shadowdusk manor was burned to the ground and it's three sisters immolated amid the ashes of their home. The spark of this long-standing resentment, nourished by a yearning for the restoration and sanitization of the Shadowdusk name and coupled with the tension that awareness inspires in him, has fostered a dangerous habit in Vohja of nudging social boundaries and provoking contemporary sensibilities.

Asides reading, daydreaming and socializing, he loves games of chance; dice, cards and other forms of friendly wagers, finding the subtle alchemy of nuanced luck and skill required to be 'good' at such games to be an apropos metaphor for life in general. His constant companion is his familiar Abrashax, a young Maine-Coon cat with molten gold colored eyes and snowy white fur with soft whorls of smoky gray.

Background: Vohja is the son of Arandraya Shadowdusk, one of the three sisters that perished in the razing of Shadowdusk Hold in 1355 DR. His father, Amon (Doppleganger), fled during the destruction of the family's holdings, leaving only the blood in his children's veins as the living inheritance of connections fostered during the time of Shadowdusk's prominence: the use of shape-changing mercenaries in information brokering and the gathering of damaging secrets meant to leverage against other Waterdhavian Houses. Abandoned to his uncle and other surviving relatives, Vohja and his sister were raised in hiding, the Houseless echoes of a slightly mad Arandraya's indiscretions, and of the truth to rumors before the House was destroyed of aberrations disguised as members of the family.

While the Undermountain retreat is still home to the remains of most of former House Shadowdusk, Vohja grew up primarily in Waterdeep proper, scrounging a modest existence out of the remnants of former holdings and connections in the shadows of still standing Houses; faceless reminders of the other noble families that were either involved, or simply stood idle in the wake, of his family's destruction. Studying in both libraries and temples, Vohja’s tutelage growing up involved both ecclesiastic and philosophical training, with an obvious orientation towards the clergy. But after an altercation with some of the youths of one of the standing Houses early into his teens, the family believed it too dangerous to risk discovery of Arandraya's surviving children. A few days thereafter, Vohja, Tsuya, and a large pair of wagons with two retainers were rattling out of the massive gates of Waterdeep with a last look back.. headed East for somewhere safer, quieter, and more idyllic.

The siblings and their two retainers/adoptive parents settled in Eastpass after the long journey from the City of Splendors just before he was 14 years old, and have spent the past four and a half years adjusting well to rural village life. His exploration of the arcane mysteries came in the form of tutoring from a disgraced half-elven former Court mage with a penchant for drinking to excess that ended up stranded in Eastpass when the caravan he was riding broke down. Toblan "Toby" Trissys, full of recent news of Sundabar, regaled the young and very eager Vohja with the state of gossip and events from the great city, and at Vohja's insistence was put up at their small home in Eastpass for the winter while the caravan made necessary repairs and reconstituted itself. In exchange, he taught the very basics of the arcane craft, and was even paid small sum in addition to the lodging being provided. By the time spring thaws came and the caravan was ready to continue on, Toblan had taken an interest in a local woman and decided to stay on to continue instructing his young apprentice. The half-elf's ambitious romantic dalliance would not weather another year however, and he said his good byes before leaving Eastpass when Vohja was 16, with an amused Tsuya leaning against their doorway strumming her lute as she watched brother's instructor leave.

As one might expect of a child that had no real father in his life, and who's mother was burned alive with her sisters within her own estate, Vohja carries a deeply abiding and unabsolved grudge for parties to which he can associate no face. His studies within both the arcane and divine realms flirt heavily with necromantic exploration, and the dream of one day speaking to Arandraya's spirit; a parentless child become young man, who has never known the visage or voice of either of his parents. One, a betrayer... the other, the mad victim of some other parties' perhaps rightful justice. His faith, consequentially, pays homage to several deities, and is itself an explorative reflection of his view of the world: turbulent, violent and disordered. His magic, both divine and arcane, emphasizes control and stabilization, and honors the perverse need of a bloodline dispossessed of any rightful House's natural sway to exercise influence over others. Tsuya, his older sister by 2 years, is a talented musician and tattoo artist with a depressive spirit cloaked in forced joy de vivre, consumed with making the world a little more beautiful. She settled in Eastpass with Vohja in the form of platinum blonde haired, blue eyed girl by the name of "Sa'Caile", and goes by "Caile". Both have artistic natures, though where Tsuya expresses through music, Vohja prefers to capture the people and scenes around him through sketches and drawing.

Vohja can occasionally be found in the company of Elia Parsons, with whom he enjoys theological discussions, and is a member of the Eastpass militia; he joined on his 18th birthday, to the great protest of his adoptive parents and the general amusement of his sister, who is absolutely convinced the greatest threat the militia will ever be called to answer for will come in the form of loose, particularly hardy goats trampling someone's gardens.

Name: Magnus Bloodstone

Race: Human

Class: Ranger

Description: Standing at just short of 6 feet tall, Magnus is well-muscled, and has an easy athletic grace about himself. He has red hair that is just to his shoulders and he wears a full bead which is also red, you can see a faint scare that runs from the right side of his face across his eye to his left jaw. You can tell that it occurred sometime ago, but it is still there. He has piercing green eyes with gold flecks in them. He carries two well used long swords on his hip along with a backpack with his traveling gear and dark leather armor.

Personality: Magnus is a quiet man who is haunted by the death of his friends and family. It takes him some time to warm up to new people he meets but once he does there is nothing he will not do for them. After meeting with Magnus, you get the feeling that something terrible has happened in his past, but he is unable or unwilling to talk about it.

Background: Magnus comes from a large family in the northern reaches of the realms. He has 5 brothers and 4 sisters of which he is the youngest. Magnus grew up on stories of great adventures including some stories of his father and his oldest brother, both who set out to see the world. Magnus’ closet friend is Toren. The two of them are closer than bothers and have been training together since before they really knew what they were doing.
One day while hunting with his friend Toren a freak storm came down from the mountains. Magnus and Toren were chased into a nearby cave to wait out the storm. As the storm raged outside, the companions could hear strange noises somewhere outside. At one point in the night Toren swore that he could see faces in the blowing snow, Magnus laughed it off as Toren’s imagination. Shortly thereafter as the storm continued to rage Magnus and Toren fell asleep despite their best efforts to stay awake. When Magnus awoke the next morning Toren was gone. The only sign Magnus could find were footprints melted into the snow heading toward his home. Magnus quickly gathered his gear and headed home. As he neared his home he could feel that something was amiss. As he rounded the last hill before his home he could see and smell what could only be a smoldering fire. There where his family cabin use to stand was a smoldering husk with little to identify it as a house. As Magnus ran to his home he began to see the same footprints as that were outside the cave last night. Upon searching the wreckage, Magnus found his mother’s body, badly burned and barely recognizable. With her dying breath she described the creature that came with the storm. After his mother was dead and buried Magnus took his father’s swords and swore to track down and kill whoever or whatever this vile creature is.

Oh man. A 3.5 game! Props friend.
I'll think about it. I try not to have so many games I can't give them all the attention they deserve or burn myself out trying.
Given your goal for the game, you may want to consider fast tracking some of the experience gain, basically hitting the bullet points of the adventure and mentioning some other stuff that happened along the way.

Yeah 3.5 games seem to have become a little rare nowadays.

I will have to take a look at all those.

Dread Necromancer- what book is that from?

Artificer- where are you taking that from. Eberron?

I have played Vow of poverty characters before so would probably allow it though staying true to your vows will add an extra challenge.

Let me know what specific feats you are interested in and I will double check them.

-Dread Necromancer is in Heroes of Horror.
-Artificer is indeed an Eberron Class, it's from the main Campaign Guide.
-The Feats are all Exalted Feats from the Exalted Guide, the Vow Feats of Poverty, Non-violence, and Peace.

Obviously, these are three different Character ideas, but I wanted to see both what you would allow, and what you think would be the best fit.

The ideas are:
-A Lawful Neutral, Human Dread Necromancer, that can debuff, self-heal, and indulge in a little Minionmancy.
-A Human Artificer/Merchant from Lantan.
-A Human Vow of Peace/Non-violence/Poverty Sorcerer, specialising in non-damaging debuff's and Battlefield Control.

Eternal Darkness:
right-aligned image

Name: Vanessa Ulian
Race: Skill focus (Listen)Human
Class:
-Acid splash
-Ray of Frost
-Flare
-Daze
-Detect Magic
-Burning Hands
-Magic Missile
Sorcerer
Description: Vanessa is a slip of a thing in a black dress that is little more than gossamer with a 'V' that cuts down just past her navel. She wears simple black slippers on her feet. Her long sleek back hair reaches just below her buttocks. Her skin is pale from spending a lot of time indoors. The thick black cloth that wraps around her eyes does little to hide the natural beauty of her hawk-like facial structure. The feathers that are sewn into the shoulders of her gown are obviously old feathers from a raven. The ruffled black raven that is always with her answers to the name 'Poe'.

Personality: Vanessa may be hampered in many situations due to her complete blindness but she sees it as a an exchange for her other gifts. She is a determined individual that tries to find the good in everything that happens to her. She relies heavily on Poe and her walking stick to find her way around but she tries not to let that slow her down. She finds laughter easy and hopes to make everyone around her confidant or content in any situation.

Backstory:Vanessa was born to a poor bookbinder in the village of Eastpass. The household rejoiced until they saw the infant for the first time. They dismayed because the poor girl's eyes were milky-white with blindness. The physician that attended the child foretold that Vanessa would remain blind for her whole life. It was so, that this poor little child, as happy as she could be, enjoyed learning everything for the first time in the comfort of darkness. Her nursemaid was the first one to notice that while she lacked one natural gift that the Maker gave everyone, apparently, the Maker had given her an even greater gift in exchange. As the nursemaid went to check on the infant one day, the wooden mobile exploded and flew from over the crib, crumbling into cinders all the while little Vanessa giggled and screeched joyfully, a magical aura of raw energy coruscating from her little mits.

Needless to say, her childhood was much different from other children in more ways than one. She had to learn a whole other way to see and how to control her growing powers. Her father kept her close by more often than not and as he was a bookbinder, he was able to peruse many books that the village had to offer, finding ways to help little Vanessa learn how to read without the assistance of sight. When she reached her teenage years and realized the power she held in her very hands, she came to find a use for her powers, to help others even given the naturally destructive capabilities of her powers. It was surely a heartfelt goodbye when she talked her father into letting her become an adventurer so that she could help others and truly put her gifts to good use.

She was never allowed to go to the Giddy Goat Inn but she knew that if she wanted to meet other adventurers like herself, an inn was a good place to start. Between her walking stick, her raven, Poe and the special map that her father gave her she made it to the inn.

I am aiming for a good mix between Roleplay and Action (action might night necessarily only be combat it could include traps, skill challenges etc). The intention however is for the game to be story driven and not a mindless hack and slash.

A 3.5 game! I am interested, but know nothing about the Forgotten Realms world. Is that a disqualifier?

One gripe I have with party composition is missing roles, with many players wanting to play some edgy, non-human character with multiple templates, flaws, obscure classes etc. Then the adventure begins and there is no one who can disarm a trap or cast a healing spell.

Thus, I am willing to play a human cleric or rogue to fill in a gap.

The cleric is a young priest assigned to the church at East Pass (I assume LG) and is permitted by the vicar to assist the party.

OR

The rogue is a local youth who was (literally) caught stealing, but put under magic compulsion to assist the party as his sentence. (Alignment Neutral)

Does this sound acceptable?
