page14 After getting their hair cut.( The part of the army David hated most). The 2 boys were assigned to a platoon & battalion. The first 2 days were unincidental , filled with PT and locker inspections. But the third night a group of 6 went to blanket party a trainee the drill Sgt didn't like. Private Zhang Ji a Chinese American. David of course wasn't going to let them. So David rushed in behind one and grabbed him in a reverse headlock. The trainee bent backwards David's arm squeezing on his neck. David jerked up as hard as he could, on the guys neck. Breaking it as he push kicked another trainee out a window by the bunk they were attacking. Zhang realizing what was happening jumped up. And punched 1 attacker in the lower right ribs. Then side kicked him into the wall by the window. Tackett alittle faster to react this time. Came up behind one of the attackers. Who had froze when he saw a friend die, and another go flying out a window. Tackett wrapped the guy in a sleeper hold and didn't let go until the drill Sgt s and MPs came running in.

page15 The other 2 attackers ran back to their bunks. When they saw that they weren't fighting just a sleeping trainee. That 2 others who were skilled fighters had joined the one they had intended to attack. And that that trainee also could fight. The trainee who went out the second story barracks window died the next day. And David & Tackett again were brought to a hearing along with Zhang. Drill Sgt Mehann said that the 2 trainees were out of control and needed to be court marshaled. The jag thought it funny. The drill Sgt report had said only 4 others were involved. 2 dead 2 alive. And it was a harmless prank... But the jag had already spoken to the 2 cowards who went awol that morning. As well as the 2 who had been knocked out. And learned of the drill sgt's involvement. When Drill Sgt Mehann realized this he tried to cover it up by saying it needed to be done. To promote teamwork and toughen up the weak trainees. The jag said you can't promote teamwork by stabbing one of your trainees in the back. Or by beating them to toughen them up. He was given a dishonorable discharge. As were those who did his bidding. David, Zhang, and Tackett were warned to stay out of trouble, and only missed a couple days of road marching. ( The Cornel had secretly used his influence to keep David on Fort Benning.)

page16 David had no more trouble during basic . And was promoted to corporal upon graduation of basic. Before he started Air Born school. David enjoyed most of Airborne training. Repelling out of blackhawks, down cliffs was fun. But parachuting out of a perfectly good plane seemed unreasonably insane. He wondered every jump if his chute would not open, or rip when open. But nothing ever went wrong. Billy Alston made sure of that. The Cornel promised that Billy would become an army ranger no matter what. Most likely a commander. If he reported everything he. knew about David and watched his back. Billy wasn't sure of why the interest in David. But he liked him and his 2 friends, Dave Tackett and Zhang Ji. So he enjoyed the assignment. Then they all went on to Ranger training... David made Sgt. And squad leader. Billy struggled all through ranger training but his friends always had his back, and helped him get through. Plus he had the Cornel's promise to fall back on.

page17 Almost at the end of training Billy found his calling. Zhang stepped on a training mine, and Billy disarmed it. Then used it to take half the enemy squad. At the end of ranger training they were each sent to a school of training specific to their traits. David went to urban warfare school, knife, small arms, and close quarters combat. Also guerilla warfare. Dave Tackett went to sniper school and broke three of the school's records. Longest perfect shot, most downed targets with a single shot, and Fastest sniper kill shot rate. He also tried for the record for most head shots during training. But fell short by 2. Zhang learned to fly blackhawks. And Billy went to demolition school. Where he learned how to disarm bombs, mines, and missiles. He also learned how to build many types of bombs.

page18 By the time they were assigned to the 82nd airborne ranger battalion David had made staff Sgt. Billy had been promoted to Sgt. Tackett & Zhang were both corporals. They had all been assigned to Or. Sammuel's platoon. Their first assignment was to take out a group of terrorist in a city in Iraq. They had arrived to take the group into custody. And we're surrounded by insurgents. Gun fire all around , one of the chopper pilots to a hit. So Zhang was ordered to stay behind and help pilot the chopper. Tackett located a sniper tower and used it to start taking out hostiles Billy started rigging the escape route with claymores, and remote c4 charges. David had surprised everyone taking down targets fast. Wading into the enemy with a smile on his face. Billy couldn't tell who had more kills the 30 fellow platoon members, or David. When David's rifle ran out of ammo he pulled a side arm and his combat knife. And continued forward. He emptied his first clip and one guy rushed him. His HK bayonet first. Which David's combat knife knocked aside, and cut the man's throat on the back swing.

page19 Just as Tackett took out the next one with a head shot. David acquired the HK from that one and opened up. Then a rpg hit the front line of Rangers 20m behind him. Lt.Sammuel instantly ordered a retreat. As David who had been knocked down by the blast stumbled to his feet. And was surrounded by 12 hostiles. Alston started forward. But Lt.Sammuel grabbed the back of his flack jacket. " I said retreat! So move it!", he ordered. "But Rangers never leave a man behind.", Alston said. " What do you think you are the officer? Are you giving me orders now?! NO! Then fall back, and forget that recruitment B.S. He got caught away from the unit. Leave him!", ordered the Lt. Then Tackett shot 2 enemies with one bullet. Just above David's left shoulder. " Hey I ordered a full retreat tower! Do that again and I'll have you court marshalled.", the Lt yelled into his com. As Alston's first claymore took out 3 pursuers.

page20 The bodies of the 2 dead men falling unexpectedly, distracted the men surrounding David. Long enough for him to escape. He shot the remaining three behind him. As he spun down behind a car for cover. He had left a live grenade where he had been standing. As the choppers flew over Zhang saw a creator and a pile of ripped up bodies. Where David had been . But then Tackett pointed at an alley not far with David rolling out of sight behind the backside of a building. Knowing he was alone in enemy territory. David ducked in side a building hoping he was not seen. Then checked his gear. 1 grenade, 2 combat knives, a HK with half a clip, and his desert eagle with 2 unused clips. The HK also still had it's bayonet attached. He had a canteen, a compass, and a map. Which had the location of the building the terrorist were supposed to be hiding in, marked on it. His flack vest had a few bullets in it, and his ribs hurt. Something he was used to.

page21 David took a drink from the canteen. Then started to make his way towards the building. A difficult task with the insurgents all around. They hated Americans. Almost as much as the terrorist. As he ducked, crawled, and dodged, through allies, behind cars and buildings. He would have to stab the throats with the bayonet, or cut throats of insurgents he came across. As he made his way. It was dark by the time he located the building. He took out the 2 guards at the door. Then rigged a trip wire to his grenade in the path of the perimeter guards. And went in. To his surprise there were no guards roaming the building, just a room with lights and voices. Along the walls were creates of rpgs.( To bad Alston ain't here he could rig them to blow.) Thought David as he headed for the room. The terrorist were busy building iads. And And discussing where to place them. When David burst in. He shot 2 with the HK. When it was emptied he used the bayonet to pin one of the target men to the wall. ( Through the neck.) As another rushed him. David stomped the man's knee backwards. Then slammed his head into the wall.

page22 He drew both his knives and ducked an attack as he slashed the man's hamstrings. Then came up behind the attacker. Spinning around and stabbing down into both shoulders. He pulled them out and threw one into the lower back of the first man who was not dead yet. He tackled 1 one guy who was headed for the exit. And stabbed the second in the chest . With drew the blade while smashing the first guys head into the floor. And sliced his throat. And then felt a sharp pain. of a knife in his side from the last terrorist. David spun on the man in a blind fury. Grabbed his arm and broke it in 2 places. Before the hand let go of the knife. Then he broke the man's other arm and dislocated that shoulder. As the man tried to twist his way free David stomped one of his ankle sideways breaking it. Then David slammed a few punches into his ribs and face. Breaking his nose, jaw and a few ribs. As the anger subsided, he collected him self. Found a rope and tied all the terrorist together. Then made shoulder straps and a loop around his waist. As David headed for the back door his grenade trap went off. He moved the junk from in front of the door grabbed the nearest rpg. And went out. He used the rpg to collapse the building behind him. He used his side arm to take out 3 more men. As he dragged the terrorist, he made his way to a jeep. He headed in the general direction of his base. With 5 dead terrorists and one half dead one in tow.

page23 The jeep broke down 10 miles away from the base. So David grabbed the make shift harness he had made. Jerked his load out of the jeep. He started walking dragging the terrorist behind him. As he started he turned his head and said. " Lets go my bitches." A total of three days have passed since they were forced to leave David behind. And Tackett, Zhang, and Billy couldn't get the Lt. to send a rescue party. But earlier the Cornel and Sgt Carnickle arrived. "Okay so it's just the 4 of you then.", The Cornel said. To the staff Sgt and the boys. "Gear up.",he ordered.( I spent too much time, money and favours on this Soldier to have some punk Lt leave him behind.) Thought the Cornel. David starts up another sand dune (another of a million to go) he thinks. ( I joined the army for what? To walk alone. My shadow the only one that walks beside me.) He continues thinking. Tired, hungry, dehydrated, and wounded. Although the knife wound was almost healed. He hasn't noticed. He also failed to noticed the camo tent he passes as he walks into the base camp. Right in front of the jeep that the rescue team was loading. At least they were until he showed up on his own. As The Sgt slips away unnoticed. The Cornel walks up to David. " Six terrorists as ordered Sir!", Said David as he snapped to attention. And falls over from exhaustion. He never knew that all 6 were now dead.

page24 But they gave him credit for capturing them all the same. Gave him a medal and promoted him to First Sgt. To the Lt's chagrin. After a few days rest David was put in charge of a 10 man squad. Which he started training to act as a precision unit. Along with his 3 friends. ( Making a 13 man squad.) On his way to the mess hall/ tent he ran into his three friends. Tackett, Zhang and Alston. " Hey David how you feeling today?", they asked. " Like walking alone...You know the whole time I was dragging them back I thought you would come find me. But I just walked alone.", he said and continued on his way. "But we...", Billy started. And was cut off by Zhang. Who put his finger to his lips to single him to shut up. After a second Tackett told him, " He believes Honor, Respect, and friendship first. Even if the whole US Army had been trying to kill him. He would have come for us. To hell with orders." He shook his head... "We should have done the same.", said Zhang. " Let it go. And next time just be there. Like I was when those guys jumped Zhang. I had been to late when a group tried to attack David. But backing him up when helping Zhang made up for it.", said Tackett.

page25 Later during target practice. David stopped by Tackett's tower. "Thanks for that shot. When those 2 fell the others started looking for where the shot or shots had come from. And we're distracted enough for me to leave them a present and run.", That's all he had said. And was gone again before Tackett had realized he had stopped talking. ( How does he do that? No one else can come and go on me like that. I always notice them.) Thought Tackett. Their next assignment was similar to the first. The platoon went in ready for a fight. Which always came here. While David's unit would find a sneaky way in grab the 2 targets, and blow any weapons found. While Tackett covered them and their extraction. They only found guns and ammo with the targets this time. Any bombs they had made were already gone. Alston rigged a incendiary blast to melt the guns and set off the ammo. And the extraction went off smoothly too. Tackett only got 2 kills and those guys never got a shot off. Many assignments like this went by. And David's unit never lost a single man. David used his free time and his rather disappointingly low collage bonus . To do online courses in law enforcement and criminal science. Which even with the low cost of online courses he was only going to have enough for an associates degree. After a few months David's unit was sent back state side. But while his men went on furlough. David was sent to officer training. And was promoted to Lt. His squad had 5 more added to it making it 18 total. ( He technically had two squads.) And we're sent on missions with out a platoon backing them.

page26 On the next mission a new guy caught David's attention. He stood above the other Rangers on this mission. Tackett was to provide cover for entry. But as he took out 2 sentries, a group found the strike force. David charged in with his silenced sub machine guns. Followed closely by the new guy. Who matched David kill for kill. Then the new guy covered everyone on their way to the target building. While Tackett sat in his sniper post watching. Inside David singled his team to stop. That 2 hostiles in the next corridor were setting explosives. Tackett using his infra red sight now. Saw the single and took them out with his .50 cal. Then David had Zhang cover Alston as he disarmed the devises. Then split the unit up into teams of three to search the building. David took Callen and Ramarez with him. While searching a room David ran into 2 hostiles and took them out with a knife. As he felt danger from behind. That his men had left open and unguarded. Where were they?...

page27 David turned to face his attacker. Only to see the new guy smiling and saluting. As he removed his knife from the hostile's neck. David nodded his approval and moved on. Callen and Ramarez finally came in behind them. Then they herd gun fire from Zhang and Alston's position ( everyone had silencers so the gunfire meant hostiles.) He ordered Callen and Ramarez to finish clearing the area. And rushed to help his friends. But when he arrived, there was the new guy behind the enemies. Taking them out, stealthily one by one with his knife. David saw Zhang had a shoulder wound. And quickly took out the 3 the new guy hadn't yet. The 2 soldiers who were supposed be with the new guy couldn't keep up. So David ordered them to cover Zhang & Alston. As he turned to the new guy. " Follow me John", he said to private first class Banks. The 2 cleared the rest of the building. Using only combat knives. Like they were competing for most kills. But instead of looking like competitors, they moved as 1. Like they had done this before. They did not find the mission's target. And headed for the extraction point.
