The Iron Gods

Game NameThe Iron Gods
Game SystemPathfinder
Themefantasy meets sci fi
FlavourScif fi elements mixed with a fantasy setting, uncoving ancient secrets of the world, saving the world from a growing threat.
Plot SummaryThe town of Torch has long enjoyed a singular claim to prosperity-a violet flame that burns atop Black Hill in the heart of the town. This flame burns incredibly hot, and while it's usually the size of a bonfire, several times a year the fires spew up into the heavens in a brilliant beam of purple violence. These eruptions are presaged by about an hour of soft rumbling, giving nearby smiths a chance to retreat before the fires can consume them. At all other times, the violet energies allow for the smelting of all manner of skymetal. Torch is one of the only locations where skymetal can be worked with relative ease outside of Starfall, and its entire economy has risen around these purple flames, with traveling smiths coming from across Avistan to pay for the opportunity to work with them. Of course, Torch needs all the visiting trade and coin it can gather, for while the town's distance from Starfall makes it inconvenient for the Technic League to maintain a permanent presence here, the taxes and tariffs it charges the Numerian town on a monthly basis are significant. The town prospers, but the bulk of its income does not belong to it. Which is why, when the fires atop the hill suddenly go out, the town is in trouble.

The wizard Doctavian Velesaris has summoned you in regard to the incident in the hopes that you may resolve the issue, but the secrets you uncover may shatter the very foundations of what you thought you knew about the world.

Set in the harsh lands of Numeria, a realm where savagery and super-science exist side by side, the Iron Gods Adventure Path incorporates a number of sciencefiction themes alongside its more traditional fantasy offerings. So while there’ll still be dragons, orcs, magic swords, and potent spells, PCs in this campaign will also face robots, cyborgs, and aliens armed with technological weapons and gear, the origins of which have been a mystery for thousands of years.

Although technology plays a key role in the Iron Gods Adventure Path, your fresh, new, 1st-level character does not yet possess any of these ancient marvels of superscience. He may have heard stories of the wonders of Silver Mount, the terrors of the Felldales, or the strangeness of the metal gearsmen who serve the Technic League, but no character starts Iron Gods with any high-tech gear. This will, of course, change soon enough as you begin your adventures!

I am looking for five level 1 characters. Accepted courses ae the core rule book, advanced players guide, iron gods players guide, technology guide

What to expect
I will update every Tuesday
No maps
Initiative breaks down to those who go before the enemies are resolved in order of their post, then the enemies, then those who go after the enemies in the same manner.

Special note about android characters. While your backstory can be whatever you want, your first memory was waking up in a pod with no memories. How long ago this happened is up to you.

Please submit the following
Name
Race
Class
Appearance
Personality
backstory
RP sample of the defining moment in your characters life

Deadline 5/24

I'm familiar to DnD 3.5, heard this is similar. I have applied for pf games before, but never played. Are you accepting new players of pf?

I have an idea for a "Blaster Wizard" type, with an interest in technology. Sort of like the Technic League, but not a Total D-bag!

How many Traits would each Character have (I assume 1 Campaign Trait, and 1 other), and are Flaws allowed?

1 Campaign Trait, and 1 other, 2 if you take a flaw

Zangul, PF is very easy to adjust to from 3.5.

Skills are a little different, not a lot.
You get more feats
Lots of fun classes, archetypes, etc.
No Warlocks, but the Witch is basically a warlock with wizard spells added on.

If you get selected, there's a dozen people who would be happy to walk you through any questions about PF.

Name: Isaac Stonefire
Race : Human
Class: Wizard (Admixture School)
Campaign Trait: Stargazer
Background:
Isaac had never been under any illusions that he was a biological child of the Stonefire family, as he was almost as tall as his "mother" before he had hit his teens, you see the Stonefire's were Dwarves.
Granitte and Jasmine Stonefire had taken in Isaac as a baby after his parents disappearance, as they had been close friends and (allegedly) distant Kin of Isaac's mother. Both Parents had been noted Scholars of Ancient Technologies, though his father had come from a land far removed from Torch, where the Stonefire's lived.
Granitte told Isaac that his parents had embarked on a mission into a Numerian Dungeon, a couple of weeks after he was born. Granitte didn't know their reasons, only that it was on "Scholars Business", and that they never returned.
Desperate to learn more of his Birth Parents, Isaac read through some old notes an journals that they had left behind. He found it most illuminating!

They postulated that the strange technological ruins scattered throughout Numeria came from the skies several thousand years ago. The concept of life on other planets far beyond Golarion had always fascinated them, and they'd long hoped to learn more about what life on those other planets may have been like. They had heard stories about the strange alien creatures found in Numerian dungeons and hoped to learn all they could about them. Their final notes wondered if perhaps some of these aliens could be found in the caverns below Torch!

His research had also revealed something else to Isaac, he was extremely fascinated by Magic! His parents had taken their actual Spellbooks with them, of course, but they had left extensive notes of their work behind, which the Stonefire's had kept for Isaac as his only physical connection to his parents, which was enough for Isaac to teach himself the rudiments of magic. The Stonefire's were actually delighted by this, as they wanted him to have a way to defend himself in the future, and were painfully aware of his physical shortcomings (even for a human!)

He knew that it would be about as effective as the Sea trying to warm itself around a candle, but he started a personal project to write up his parents notes of the Ancient Technology, and the Strange Creatures that had once (and perhaps still did) utilize it, into a single book for other Scholars to use, and thus secure his Parents Academic legacy.
Late one evening, he stepped back from his desk, he had done it, his was complete! A Master of one of the Great Universities would scoff at it, but for a self-taught Apprentice, it was fine work. He scratched his head, it would take some time, not to mention Coin, to have it printed, but for now, he had earned a break. Glancing out of the window, he remembered that there was a Celebration in Torch the following day. He normally avoided such things, as he wasn't great with crowds (or with people at all really), but he would make an exception this time. He got into bed, happy for once, and sighed. Yes, tomorrow would be a good day....

Physical Description:
Fairly tall at 5'9" and painfully thin, he is almost a stereotype of the physically frail Wizard. He dresses for practicality rather than to impress (which he doesn't give a fig about anyway), and has a short, unkempt and scraggly beard, which finds easier to keep rather than waste time shaving every day.

Personality:
Isaac was weaned on Legends of his Scholar parents, and his every action in this world us geared toward making an equal and lasting contribution to the goal that they fell in the pursuit of, which is why he wants to make a great discovery, after all, when (not if) he eventually falls, a part of him will be part of the accumulated knowledge of the world (especially if it is about other Worlds). This attitude has made him lose sight of the people around him, which has given him a kind of condescending and grating personality. He also seems to have lost the ability to hold a conversation with anybody without them wanting to strangle him, he is trying to work on this though.
Those few who actually know him, also know that he is a steadfast and honest man, and those who have seen him wield magic would willingly go into battle with him, though they may be hesitant to invite him to the celebration afterwards.

RP Sample:
Isaac had left the home of his adopted parents in a jolly mood earlier this morning. He would not normally have attended the Celebration in Torch, but he had just put the finishing touches on his book project, and felt he deserved at least a day of rest before he looked into the procurement of resources to actually print the thing! Distractedly, he remembered that this day was also a day that scholars, like himself, would gather to exchange ideas on magic, crafting, and warfare.
"Maybe I can find somebody to discuss my project with!" He wondered out loud. His growing excitement over the prospect must have leaked into his Familiar, Zippy, as the little Greensting Scorpion crawled out of Isaac's pocket, where he normally stayed when the Wizard was outside, and began to dance around on Isaac's shoulder!
"Stop it, Zippy!" Admonished Isaac. "You're causing a scene, people are going to stare at you!"
In fact, it was Isaac's dancing around, trying to control his Familiar, that garnered attention, specifically from a trio of grubby looking urchins.
"Ooh! A Scorpion!"
"Ooh! 'E must be a Magic User!"
"Show us a trick Mister!"
Isaac was insulted.
""A Trick!?"" He repeated. "Magic is meant to be put to the defence of the Land! A Shield against...."
He looked down at their hopeful faces.
...against The Horrors that desire nothing less than our complete destruction! Is what he had intended to say.
But this day is meant to be a reprieve from that. A single day of joy, how could I take it from them?
Forcing a smile, he sent a mental instruction to Zippy, who used it's inherent magic to fill the air with sparkling light and Fzzt sounds.
The children shrieked and laughed at the display, then ran off to find more trouble, no doubt!

Issac found himself swept into the crowd, physically weak as he was, he had no option other than to go in the same direction as everyone else. It was either that, or be bowled over, and likely crushed underfoot. So inexorably he found himself being herded towards the centre of town.

Name: Nightblade

Race: Cat-folk

Class: Samurai

Appearance: Nightblade is a black panther cat-folk. His green eyes project kindness, seriousness, and death all at the same time. He wears black clothes, and his father's first studded leather armor. He is 6ft tall and strong, yet as agile as any black panther & and sleek too. He walks with a Samurai's pride. You can tell this one is both honorable and dangerous.

Personality: Raised as a Samurai honor is his life. Death before imprisonment. And will kill an attacker cause defeat equals death. He is very quick to defend those in need. But also sees those unwilling to defend themselves as useless dishonorable trash. For even a mouse bites when cornered.

Backstory: Raised in a land of samurai and honor. With 3 different races getting along to make the Empire. Catfolk the main group. Humans the 2nd main group. And halfelves that found a home there that they hadn't else where. The Emperor is Catfolk. But there are as many halfelves and humans as catfolk on the council. This brought trade and caravans to the Empire. His father was a Samurai, who died defending one such caravan. While escorting it on a lords order. When he was old enough to be considered an adult and samurai his mother committed seppuku. She missed her husband that much and only stayed alive the last 2 years for her son. He inherited his father's holdings. But he can't use them until he reaches the rank of Shogun. ( which he will receive upon a successful mission). Despite his losses he rose to be a favored samurai. first to a lords then a shogun. And most recently to the Emperor himself. The Emperor wants to expand trade so he gave Nightblade the mission to first escort the latest caravan back to its home city. Then to find more trade routes and places to trade with. And lastly to uphold samurai honor and codes . Mainly by helping others and killing evil. So basically he was ordered to act as an adventure/ sellsword, But with extreme honor.

RP sample of the defining moment in your characters life:
Two years ago his father died. Two years ago he started training under 6 masters. Two years ago he lost his first teacher.

For two years now he has sought to honor his first master h, his father. For two years he has trained harder than any Samurai before him. For two years he sought to be the best.

Unlike most samurai who could use only one sword or one sword and tonto, Nightblade could use two swords. Of course he was good with one but so was everyone else. So he had to master better, be better. He has trained his whole life for this day. He has trained harder for two years than any before him for this day.

This day he was to become a Samurai! This day he was to honor his father. His family, his clan, his his people, & his emperor. But most of all he was to honor himself.

The test was brutal he had to beat 6 trained samurai. He did. He had to out run, out lift, out smart them, and out fight them. Then he had to impress a Lord who would swear him to service. He had to prove his honor before the emperor. And swear service to him as well. Nightblade did all these things.

"You are now Samurai. You must now serve with honor!" Said the emperor.

"Hia my emperor always.", swore Nightblade. And after he rushed home to tell his mother.

He arrived home to his father's holdings. A note on the table was there with his father's first armor. A leather armor made by his father. It readI knew you would succeed my son. Your father left this for you his last protection for you. To be given on the day you were named samurai and no longer needed us. The last part was wrong he would always need them in his heart. But more it was in past tense. But his mother was still alive....

He found her in the garden beneath the cherry blossom tree his father was hurried under. The blood had soaked into the ground knife still in her hand. She had committed seppuku. She had gone to be with his father. And on this day his birthday, his day of man hood. The day he became samurai. He was left an orphan. Alone. All had changed this day forever.

Definitely interested in trying out Iron Gods. Two questions; are you allowing unchained classes (rogue specifically) and what method are you using for stats?

Vyers Farlight

Name: Vyers Farlight

Race: Human

Class: Bard (Archaeologist)

Campaign Trait: Numerian Archaeologist

Appearance: A Kellid man with unnaturally white hair, Vyers is otherwise handsome and charming with a strong jaw and easy smile. He's got a smooth voice and a light, cheerful tone. He tends to dress in a blend of fashionably practical, and portrays his career of 'dungeon delving' with an air of wonder and mystique.

Personality: Vyers is a lighthearted, curious fellow who loves to find out the 'why' of things. He's always been a bit lucky, and he's pushed that luck pretty far, but he doesn't intend on stopping anytime soon. Even when the consequences of his decisions come back to bite him on the rear, like it did with his hair.

Backstory: Vyers was far too curious for his tribe, eventually slipping away to study abroad what he couldn't at home. When he returned, he set his sights on a ruin near his home tribe to investigate. There he found a few useful things, but was intercepted by his own people who wanted him to leave it alone. One of the items was a vial of strange liquid, which he ended up drinking to avoid being caught with it.
Vyers is now used as a cautionary tale to avoid playing with stuff in the ruins among his original tribe. The incident left him bedridden for 3 days and turned his hair purely white.

RP sample: Another damnable day, another damnable dead end. Perched on the end of a bar stool, I heft the mug of ale and sigh, shaking my head. "Only bones." I mutter into my drink.
"Pardon?" the bartender asked, glancing in my direction. The noonday sunlight streamed through the dirty windows of the tavern, with strands of sand that dusted in through the swinging doors.
Realizing that I had said that in my outside voice, I shook my head at him. "Nothing to worry about, my friend." I explain. "Was helping the locals with their 'dig' of that old house they found out by the edge of town."
The bartender nodded. "Ah yeah that place." he said. "So what'dya think? Haunted?"
I took another pull off my ale before I set the now empty mug down and nudged it forwards. "There's some bones under the garden, but nothing more than that. You had a murderer living in town back then, but they're long gone now."
"The witch? She left town ages ago. Guess she was worried we'd catch on and fled." the bartender continued the conversation, and filled the mug for me a second time.
I sighed again. "The work I did getting the place shored up so we could dig it all out, I was hoping we'd have found a basement or secret trunk with some kind of secrets inside. Maybe a buried witch's cauldron, or the witch herself! I heard tell that some of the hags can hibernate..."
"Shame. I guess." the bartender replied, shrugging. "Less danger for me, though. Less danger for the people of the town."
I take another drink, shaking my head. "I don't think that's the result you're expecting. If we hadn't checked, and the hag could hide like that, then you would have lost a lot more people than if we had dug her up. It's better to know, than to live in ignorance, my friend."
I stood, plunking a few copper pieces on the countertop. "Well, I guess lunch break's over." I state, walking to the double doors and pushing them open.
"You were only here for a few minutes."
Shrugging, I glance back and wink. "Long enough for some liquid bread."

Name: Coalash Winterborn
Race : Human, age 16
Class: Fighter [but Empiricist Investigator after 1st level]
Background:

Coalash Winterborn was a bastard child born to a pretty young lady in a farming family on the outskirts of Torch. His mother Lydia gave him names based on the bleakness of the season of his birth. He was unofficially adopted into a well-to-do merchant family, where he bore a notable resemblance to the patriarch Ivvar Gunderson. But his name remained Winterborn.

A promising lad of strong body and mind, he took up as guard-for-hire for the merchants passing in and out of Torch. He was fascinated by stories about strange automatons that plague the wilds. He gained some early experience working with veteran robot slayers. While he has seen little combat in his young life, the lore has stuck with his keenly attentive mind. Seeing random fragments of mysterious metals and devices has kindled a burning curiosity.

Coalash's burgeoning interest in technology has led him to begin to follow Brigh: The goddess of clockwork, invention, and time. He has gained some of the same passions of that sect in gathering salvaged machinery and beginning to study it. He is a neophyte in such matters: but he aims to transition from being a simple fighter into an investigator and scholar of technological matters.

Now that Khonnir has recovered a deactivated robot from the caves below – Coalash fins himself in a mixture of apprehension of excitement and anxiety. The exotic construct could go berserk, it could run amok in town: perhaps harming his friends and family. He wants to explore the caverns, to defend his community … and perhaps to begin a new path of learning into the mysteries of technology.

Personality: Neutral-good, an "I'm not going to throw away my shot!" - rhe play, Alexander Hamiltonearnest young man, loyal to his home town, and looking for a leg up in the world, impatient to learn and make his mark. He’s alway felt unfairly disadvantaged by his illegitimate birth, and so he longs to prove himself. That drive to succeed can lead him to be a bit impetuous.

His curiosity is spurring his transition to the investigator class. As he encounters real world challenges, the young man’s motivations will evolve.

He visits his mom occasionally, and pays small remittances to help her along now that he is gradually emerging into a better spot in life. His adoptive (and covertly true) father, he sees only occasionally: and he always aims to make a good impression, to make Ivvar Gunderson proud in him.

Campaign Trait: Robot Slayer: +1 trait bonus on attack rolls against robots and a +1 dodge bonus to AC against attacks made by robots

Alternate Racial Trait: Frontier Survivor: Humans with this trait gain the Technologist feat, which grants them understanding of technological subjects. Additionally, they gain a +2 racial bonus on Survival checks in the ruins of cities. This racial trait replaces skilled.

Drawback: Impatient. You can’t delay or ready actions, and if you are the last of your allies to act in a round of combat, you take a –1 penalty on ability checks, attack rolls, saving throws, and skill checks.

Build notes:
Stats will be Str > Int > Con > Dex (12) > Wis (8) > Cha (7)

Sword and board fighter: Heavy armor, heavy shield, longsword. Weapon Focus, Power attack.

Traits: Student of Philosophy (Social), Pragmatic Activator (magic)

Would Multiclass into an Empiricist Investigator.

RP Sample: On the way out to Sawtooth Bluff, two things constantly occupied Coalash's mind.

The first was the unfamiliar chafing of his new armor. On his first tour of duty as a caravan guard, his assigned equipment was new to him and while he bore the weight easily enough (his muscles were coming in stronger week by week under heavy training), the straps were unfamiliar to him and rubbed him raw as he moved, day upon day, dawn to dusk.

The other thing that occupied him was trying to catch glimpses of the red haired girl in tradedmaster Aravan's wagon. Who was she? She was beautiful. Whenever he could, he would try to get a position assigned that was was close to her wagon, so that he could see her. When he could not, he sighed ... and the older caravan guards would chuckle.

But his focus in live, indeed the whole directly his life was to take abruptly pivoted as they drew nigh to Sawtooth Bluff. It was, as a geographical feature, not particularly remarkable. It was a low line of hills, rocky enough to be unprofitable for farmer through adequate for grazing. But along its ridge ran exposed layers of rock, almost like the spines on the backs of some lizards.

Master Aravan said, "This is off our line of travel, but I hear a bit of tavern talk about something strange that happened in this place, at the base of the bluff. I think there may be a bit of an opportunity here. I'm going to take a look-see. You, and you and ... uh ... you!" (He pointed at Coalash, and he felt a thrill of anxiety but mostly excitement at being chosen.). "You three stay here. The rest of the guard team, come with me."

Coalash abruptly deflated. An opportunity for adventure missed! Was he not good enough? He was stronger, and faster, and smarter than most of these old men. He knew it! They just ... uh ... knew more about life. And killing whatever might attack Aravan's line of wagons. Well, he would do an excellent job of ... staying and guarding. He set himself to it.

But then he saw the red-haired girl, and he spent the next hour, since no one was particularly minding to shoo him away, talking with the soft-voiced shy young lady. Elease was her name. She was Aravan's neice, and heading to training at a temple of Sarenrae for a season. She would be back to Torch in the winter.

"Coalash, who's supposed to be watching the east road! You get back to duty!" barked the wagonmaster; and old joyless prune of a man.

But again Coalash was abruptly distracted. Aravan had returned, his men bearing something that looked like a suit of armor, or a giant crab? It was not large, but it was heavy. Abruptly he forgot the girl he'd just met and was already pining for, and his duty which was straightaway expected of him. Instead, his eyes were on the thing. The ROW - BOT they called it. As a farm boy, he'd seen the innards of chickens and goats often enough. But this things innards were different, metal and ... glass ... and ... other things he had no words for. He was fascinated.

For the rest of the trip, well he did his duty but the robot never left his mind and he was forever after asking incessant questions. Was it alive, what did it have, if not blood, how could such a thing move, did its dead eyes work like human or animal eyes, and so on. He absorbed everything he was told, and then with a natural gift of logic he began separating fact from fancy from outright lies the guardsmen or caravaners made up to amuse themselves or taunt him. It mattered not, he began to see through folly.

Over the next year, his soldiering skills developed, he earned ownership of his gear. And he spoke to scholars, wizards, travelers, rogues. Anyone who knew even a hint about technology. He had found a new passion. He forgot all about what's-her-name when she came back from the temple of whoever. He found kindred souls when a pair of acolytes of Brigh stayed at Torch for a week amidst their travels: from them, he began to appreciate a new Patron who cared about robots, and technology.

I have a character I'd like to post an app for, but some questions:

What races are accepted? My character is an amnesiac Triaxian who woke up in a stasis pod, with no recollection of who he is or how he ended up where he is.

Guns? Backgrounds skills? Elephant in the Room feat fix?

A few questions.

How strict are you about these limits: "Accepted courses ae the core rule book, advanced players guide, iron gods players guide, technology guide"

I don't have any physical books, I just use internet sources. So I barely have any notion of what class or feat or trait comes from where.

Is an Empiricist Investigator OK? (Starting as fighter, but multiclass to Investigator for all future levels.)

Is it OK to use alternate racial traits?

And ditto on the same questions as XQbitor.
