I thought I'd write up some quick NPCs, to give you a lead on character ideas

Eleonore

Urgh, these were new boots!
She supposed should be grateful, after all, it wasn't everyone who got to travel with one of the Jade Tower's Magisters, but she couldn't but feel a little punished. She did want to learn all there was to the powers of magic and serve the Duchess in any way she could, she just didn't expect learning to include so much walking, washing clothes, preparing meals, and carrying things....

She wasn't even sure what their goal was, she just knew she had been told to pack for a long trip, and that they'd been walking for three days. The magister seemed to think they would arrive the day after next. She didn't mind the travel, the country was lovely, and the inns were not too bad. Nothing like what she had at home, but nicer than her dorm at the Tower.

The magister didn't speak about their destination, just made her study the lands and towns they passed, writing pages each night before the candles burnt out. He himself didn't seem to be familiar with the area. He was from the school of Scrying, and evidently had little use for such mundane affairs as geography, economics, or social studies, but he was still a Magister and firmly believed students should be doing some kind of study, when they're done unpacking life's little necessities, or cleaning the days dust off coats.

Eleonore is an apprentice Wizard of the Jade tower, an assembly of arcane users who owe their patronage to the Duchess.
Originally formed in an effort to maintain their independence and as a measure of protection, the arcanists of the Duchy formed a conclave. To stay on the good side of the of the unwashed masses (not that any self respecting supporter of the Duchess would ever let themselves be called unwashed) they make an effort to assist in the protection of the region from threats, magical or mundane, in return for this they receive the Duchess' blessing and protection from Gillean emissaries, and autonomy to pursue their studies.

If there were any halfling communities it would be in the lands north of the Solin Empire, and most likely anyone who met them would consider them to be related to Dwarves.

The Northern Clans are quite primitive compared to the various kingdoms, they have never bothered to develop "modern" technologies and are puttering around with only the basics of metallurgy, with most of their advanced items (like saddles, or metal armours) traded from the south.

The character I'm thinking of is an nomadic elf who travels through human lands to learn what the humans are up to, and then reports back to her people. Is that something that would work here? And how do you feel about class archtypes?
That would work quite well. Who knows what those inscrutable pointy ears are up to. Meddling, probably.

I have no inherent dislike of archetypes, if they fit

Quick Character Ideas:

Warrior from Gallean, on the lam due to being accused of heresy, heading north and looking for adventure (or just somewhere less restrictive to live)

Sorcerer from Loschenar, touched by hidden powers, you find burning sigils appearing on your skin, and fire dripping from your now clawed hands. Tired of getting the evil eye from the others in your village, you head off to get the bottom of your curse - you've heard the larger kingdoms have great libraries and mystical schools that might know.

Solinian Battle Mage - in the service to the Empire you travel the world, keeping an eye out for likely threats, and looking for weaknesses.

Ducal Knight - The Duchess has many enemies, and their heads would please her, you valiantly sally forth into hostile realms to dispose of wickedness and ugliness. Eagerly awaiting the time to return home and regale all with your tales over wine and feasts and dancing.

Rogue...from anywhere...- Profit!

Deposed Loschenar Lord - You expected to inherit your father's lands, but a short decisive invasion by your uncle ended that notion, you escaped with little more than dad's worn battle axe, a skin of sour milk, and memories of the plump red headed girl who worked in the kitchens.

Updated work on Tandid Krumlin, the schoolyard bully that is literally an 8 year old boy in appearance. Should we make sheets?

Name: Dalornor Gladewarder
Gender: Male
Class: Ranger (goodwilled, self-sufficient, loner.)
Age: 22.
Race: Half-Elf
Stats: To be determined.
Background: Dalonor was born and raised, along with his older brother and baby sister in the forestland to the west and north of Atterton. His Father, Talonor Gladewarder joined the Duchy's Army at the age of 16. By the time he was 18 he had shown he had what it took to make it into the Scout Corps. Spending the last ten of the twenty years he served, as a Training Sergeant. For his twenty years of service. He was given a land grant in the forestland in the southwestern portion of the Duchy. Where it bordered Olamere. (Per Thumbnail Map)
It was Talonor's first year on his land. He had manage to build a small log cabin for himself. As winter was fast approaching. He had been out hunting in the southwest portion of the forest. When the first snowstorm of the year came blowing in from the southwest. He had just shoot and field dressed a yearling spiked stag. The first snowflakes had began to fall, as he threw it over his shoulders. An began to he make the 6 miles or so northeasterly hike back to his place. When to make a long story short, he rescued a youthful looking elvish woman who been thrown from her horse and fallen down the steep bank of ravine when the mare reared to make a stand against a brace of wolves that had chased the horse and rider off the trade road that ran east from Olamere to Atterton and points beyond. More then a mile or more into the forestland.
Giving up his earlier kill to the wolves, who dragged it away into the bushes. After calming the horse, he lead it in a around about way, down into the ravine. Where they found the unconscious rider.
Examining her. He saw that she had a good sized slightly bleeding good gash, along with a goose egg sized lump on here left forehead. Where she hit it on a rock. During her tumble down into the ravine As well as the largest bone of her her foreleg being broken. With the snow beginning to fall in earnest. In the fading lighh He swiftly bandaging her first injury to stop the bleeding and splint the second, to keep it stable. Unsaddling the Mare, leaving it high in the branches of a oak tree for later retrieval. Using the blanket he carried in his backback and used it as more padding over the horse blanket. He lay her spread eagle over the mare's back. So as to help keep her there. He secured her gloved hands, as well as her booted feet together under the horse's body, with short lengths of rope. After getting her safely back to her cabin. It was more then a week before the female elf regained consciousness. An when she did, she had amnesia from the blow she had taken on the head. She could speak both elvish and the common tongue, read both as well. An knew the common everyday things one does. But she couldn't remember her name, nor anything concerning the circumstances of her life before regaining conscious there in Talonor's small cabin. Talonor gave her the name of Glircuwin, which meant 'singing dove' in elvish. As she sang as she went about doing what chores she could. It took her leg almost until spring for her leg to fully mend. By then the two had fallen hopelessly in love and their first child was on the way.
From then until the present much had happened. Where once a single room cabin was now ten time the size. With three bed rooms, a large common room and a huge kitchen. Outside was a kitchen garden, as well as pins for goats and chickens. All surrounded by a ten foot high upright standing log palisade walls. The Steading was right next to a year round stream. Itself having had the surrounding forest cleared to allow for small apple and pear orchard of a dozen or so of each. Soon after their first son, Tal, (Talonor Jr.) came along. Followed a couple years later by a second, Dalornor, and six years later, a daughter, Zareria.
From a young age, Dalornor and his older brother began to learn how to hunt, trap, and forage for edible and medicinal wild plants and mushroom. Helping he and his family to partially live off the natural bounty of the wild woodland and nearby marshes. As well as how to do garden plot farming, orchard tending and harvesting, raising a small number of chickens and goats. For their eggs/meat, milk/cheese/meat and respectively. Brewing hard cider and pear brandy. Selling any surplus they might have, along with skins and furs once a moonth, to traders in Atterton . Purchasing the few supplies that they needed and couldn't provide for themselves. There father also taught them the guerrilla tactics and skills to hunt down marauding goblins and orc raiders who came south from the mountains. As well as the best way to slay dangerous animals and beasties that they might encountered from time to time. The half-elf had killed more than his fare share in the last few years.
Having recently reached the age of twenty. With his older brother being the one to inherit their family steading and having recently married a human lass from Atterton. Having moved his new bride into the bedroom that the two once shared. Dalornor has been sleeping out in the steadings common room for a few weeks and it was getting old quick. He had been feeling the wanderlust come upon him for a good while. So he decided he wanted to see more of what the world might have to offer him. Starting off first in familiar Atterton and going from there!

Nice character Valornor

Minor point of adjustment (that has little bearing on your character, and is my fault, as I don't think I posted the general info for the duchy) - the Duchy doesn't have a standing army, the Duchess employs loyal knights to defend her lands and do her bidding. Other than everything sounds good

Knights would need some sort of scouts out on the land gathering information for them. As well as keeping an eye on the borders and such. Wouldn't they??? Also it's not like a knight can walk into some tavern in some small village and be able to overhear things in the conversations around them. People usually get pretty tight lipped around authority figures. But someone plainly dressed like a hunter from two villages over. That lost the trail of the wild boar they had been hunting. An decided to wet their whistle with some ale. Before having to return home empty handed. Now they would most likely be able to one or two bits of useful information. Besides knights are to noble and honorable to stoop to doing such skullduggery! Once they have gathered all the available facts. They can go and deal out Justice in the name of the Duchess.

If not, is the river on your map actually the western border of the Duchy??? Then those forestlands would actually belong to Olamere and be on their eastern border. Thus Talornor, Dalornor's father had actually been in the Scout Corps of the Olamere Army and had been given a land grant from them there upon leaving their Army. Will that work?

One last thing, I don't see it mentioned anywhere. By what method are we the players going to be using to generate the Stats for our PC?

No problems with the story, just clarifying a minor point.

On geography, I don't have a mouse at the moment, so I'm not going to attempt drawing a map, but I'll try to explain.
The quick map I put up Shows Atterton (which is more or less under the protection of the Duchess, and so part of her lands) and the Duchy to the West.
To the East is Loschenar, to the north (east of the mountains) is Solin and south is Gallean.
Olamere is not pictured, but borders the South-Western edge of the Duchy and reaches the coast.

Olamere are allies of the Duchess, so there's no real issues with wandering freely between the two - just got to avoid those miserable xenophobic Galleans to the South.

The Empire, The Duchy and the Kingdom don't really have Southern/Eastern/Northern borders respectively, as they all edge onto Loschenar, which is full of various Lords who attempt to expand or retreat as their whims and seasons dictate (and whether or not the areas they are expanding into can be bothered pushing back)

Which is exactly what has happened recently - there has been some raiding by unknown parties into the Eastern border of the Duchy, which has been met by a Knight and his retinue dispatched by the Duchess (and if Eleonore's story is any guide, possibly being investigated by the Jade Tower as well)

For the sake of scale, Eleonore and her Magister friend are walking from the capital city of the Duchy to Atterton over five days. Given a relatively leisurely pace, I'm calling this 120kms (or 75 miles)

Chargen - Standard (4d6, drop lowest, arrange as desired) for stats or the old standard array (15, 14, 13 ,12, 10, 8), gold is as per table 6.1 or average for class.

In either case, prefer you declare your call before making it. Not too fussed about it right now though, as the game thread has not been approved so there is no where to "save" the rolls.

Eeek. Even if I don't get in or the game doesn't get approved, I just so badly want to make a sheet for Tandid Krumlin. I will be doing standard array for stats, and will assume that this is a level one character. If we find out that they are higher level, I can fix that.
