Name: Gavin

Occupation: Gavin helps his parents at the tannery.

Class: Paladin

Gender Identity: Male

Race: Dragonborn

Appearance: Gavin stands 6’4” tall and weighs 275 pounds. He has light blue scales that match the color of his eyes. Despite what some might consider a fierce look, he almost always has a friendly smile.

Personality: Gavin is friendly and outgoing. He greets almost everyone he meets with a smile and his normally gentle manner puts people at ease. When he sees someone in need he always offers to help. He has a strong sense of justice and a desire to protect those who can’t protect themselves.

Backstory: Gavin is the youngest child of the tanner and his wife, Bertold and Esme, and he was born with physical challenges. His right les was crooked and his back was bent, so that he couldn’t stand up straight. His challenges meant it took him longer to learn how to walk and he couldn’t run much at all, but he never let that bother him, and he was readily accepted by most of the other children. Gavin was always a happy child and as he grew older, he developed an infectious laugh, and he had a smile that would light up the room.

He wanted to help his parents at the tannery, but Gavin’s stature made it difficult for him to master the skilled work of turning hides into leather. However, there was always plenty that he could do, and he pitched in with enthusiasm. From an early age Gavin’s parents taught him the difference between right and wrong and he developed a strong sense of justice. He isn’t sure exactly how or when it started, but the other children began bringing their squabbles to him to sort out. He just had a way of talking that would calm tempers and most problems could be solved by an apology and a handshake. Sometimes, the offense would demand a sterner redress, which was almost always having the guilty party do the chores of the victim. After a while, Gavin was no longer surprised when the children would abide by his decisions.

Mistvale wasn’t perfect, however. Like most places, it had a few bullies and, since Gavin was so different, he was an easy target. The leader of the bullies was a farm boy named Sandor. He was a few years older than Gavin and the work on the farm had made him strong, even for a child his age. Gavin could often talk himself out of a beating with the other bullies, but never with Sandor. Most of the time he wouldn’t give Gavin time to talk, he would just start hitting. Gavin got to where he could mostly ignore the pain and he even got as good at avoiding Sandor as possible in a village the size of Mistvale. However, whenever he could, he would put himself between the bullies and the other kids, often taking a beating so the others wouldn’t. That all changed when Gavin became a teenager. He grew incredibly fast, putting on close to 100 pounds and growing nearly a foot taller in a short time. Since he couldn’t stand up straight it was hard to tell how tall he would be if he could, but everyone said he would be over six feet tall. Working at the tannery was hard and Gavin had always been decently strong for his size, so when he grew it was mostly with muscle. However, most people couldn’t tell that just by looking at him.

One day, when Gavin was going to the bakery to pick up bread for his family, he saw Sandor picking on one of the other children. With a sigh, he hobbled over and got between them, Giving Sandor a shove in the process, which caused him to trip and fall in the dirt. Furious at being made to look foolish, Sandor leapt to his feet and punched Gavin in the head. For some reason, on this day, Gavin snapped and hit back. The punch took everyone by surprise and no one more so than Gavin. After just taking abuse for years, hitting Sandor felt wonderful. The older boy stumbled back and fell again. The fight, such as it was, should have been over at that point, but that punch unleashed years’ worth of anger. Instead of walking away, Gavin knelt over Sandor and hit him again and again, until several adults pulled him away. As a result of the fight Sandor lost the sight in his left eye. It didn’t take long for Gavin to start feeling guilty about what he had done. He has never been bothered by the bullies again, and he can usually make them stop bothering other kids with just a look. He has spent several years trying to apologize to Sandor and make up for what he did, but Sandor has refused to forgive him or let the incident go.

When the Tear happened, Gavin was in the middle of the village, on his way to deliver some finished leather. The sound was frightening, and he was knocked down by the trembling earth. After the mountain settled, he slowly stood back up and looked around. Several buildings had either completely or partially collapsed, and he knew there were people trapped inside. He ran to help as fast as he could. He felt the changes start to happen to his body while he was lifting timbers and clearing stones, trying to clear space to get to some people. His back straightened and his leg unbent. It felt wonderful! He was able to stand straight for the first time in his life. It was so strange that he almost missed the fact that his hands changed too. Two of his fingers on each hand grew together and he ended up with talons covered in light blue scales. The other people helping to free those trapped in the collapsed building stopped to stare, but not for long. There was work to be done and, after all, they knew he was still just Gavin and not a person to be afraid of.

After getting everyone trapped set free, Gavin went home. The tannery had survived pretty much intact, and he wanted to talk to his parents. They were shocked by his changes, of course, but somehow they could tell it was still him. It has taken Gavin a few days to get accustomed to his new body, but he is well pleased with it. Protecting Mistvale in the coming days will be difficult and he is more suited to the task now than ever before.

No worries Hal. Looks like I still have some good applications. Enough that I may start things earlier than originally intended. All I really need to do is set some stuff up and finish the larger area map.

Application

Name: Ash / Daevan Farrin

Occupation: Charcoal Burner and Woodsman
Class: Barbarian
Background: Outlander
Gender Identity: Male
Race: Shifter - Beasthide

Appearance:

Ash is a tall hulk of a Man, Standing 6 foot 4 inches tall with the broad shoulders and thick arms of a man who has spent a lifetime swinging an axe and carrying heavy loads of wood. He wears a thick full beard and moustache which has turned grey early from the constant heat and chemicals used in his trade and his body is a mass of small scars and burn marks which are part of the trade also. This harsh lifestyle and his constant outdoor nature (and lets be honest, his grumpy demeanor) often give people the impression he is much older than his 38 years.

Since the 'Fall' his hands and forearms are badly burnt and wrapped, his hands also covered with leather gloves, although still healing these scars are too deep to fully heal and although by some miracle he has full use of his hands, he will be plagued with pain for the rest of his life from them. a constant physical reminder of what he lost (as if he needed one)

Personality:

Ash is a simple man and his world view is very simple, almost black and white. There's a time to work and a time to play, there's right and there's wrong and very little in between. Hard working and tireless, Silent and Stoic when its time to work, Solid and dependable to the point of stubborn at times, but when he relaxes he has a loud belly laugh and a mischievous glint in his eye, and a surprisingly sharp wit and insight few give him credit for, while he will be the first to admit he is by no means a book smart man, Ash is far from a mindless brute.

Friendly, supportive and fiercely loyal to his friends and family, Ash has a temper which is rarely seen but when unleashed, that and his sheer physical stature makes him a scary man to face in a bar room brawl, a lifetime of farm work and swinging an Axe makes him a bear of a man, with the temperament to match.

Until The 'Fall' and the death of his family.

Most will say his grim and grumpy silence is normal for a man grieving but the loss of his family has left Ash a broken man, withdrawn. his only solace to retreat into his work in an attempt to bury whats happened and to try and get a handle on his new nature. The Fall changing him both physically and mentally, his brain almost devolving into something more animalistic and primal. his temper which was always there, held in check under the surface now fanned into a fierce feral flame just waiting, fighting to be released (Barbarian Rage and Shifter Nature), a thought that scares him and he doesn't know if when released if he will be able to keep in under control and he fears what he would do to those around him when it happens

Backstory:

The Farrin family have been a part of Mistvale Village life for generations, living on the outskirts of the town due to the nature of their work. the Farrin's are Charcoal Burners and Woodsmen who prepare and stockpile the Charcoal used to keep the village warm during the long winter months when dry wood to heat hearth and home are impossible to find. Like all men in the family line, Ash followed in his family footsteps and grew into a solid dependable member of the community, Born Daevan Farrin, Ash got his name as a child, being mocked by some of the other village children the way they do as youths, thinking it was a clever nickname for the charcoal burner, Daevan took it all in his stride, placid and stoic even as a child due to his emulation of his father, which just made the children use the name more trying to get a rise out of him until the point that most in the village couldn't even remember his given name anymore, to all he was simply Ash. He responded to it with good nature so that's who he was from then on.

Life in the village was enough for him, a simple man with no desire to leave his home. He worked hard and enjoyed his life. finding love with the daughter of the baker and winning her hand in marriage he was soon blessed with a daughter, the light of his life. what more could a man ask for in life? and then the Fall happened and Ash's life was destroyed in minutes. perhaps his nickname was a foreshadowing and should have been a warning for that's how his world collapsed.

Ash was working during the 'Fall' cutting wood and monitoring the huge fires used to produce the charcoal blocks. always a safe distance from any structures that could catch flame, sparks and embers from the fire would often spit and fly free, as the skin of any charcoal burner would show but never far enough to reach to trees or his home near by, the Farrin Family had plied this trade for generations and had a healthy respect for the flames.

But this fire was something new, the fall happened and the flames came alive, the winds howled louder and the flames screamed, Ash could swear he heard them laughing, something magical in the air as they spat and embers flew, flew further than should have been possible, straighter than an arrows flight towards his home, as if almost seeking it out, the embers flew an impossible distance and caught at the wood of his home faster than dry straw thrown on a bonfire, within seconds his home was ablaze, before his brain had even registered what he saw, the ember moving in ways it shouldn't have, his whole house was a blazing bonfire, a fatal fire that took his family from him, his wife and young daughter still inside.

Ash ran to try and save his family but by the time he arrived at the home, less than a minutes run away, the heat was too intense and he was physically pushed back by the flames, unable to do anything but stand and watch, to scream at the world until his voice was hoarse, inhaling smoke and ash, his skin blistering in his attempts to get inside as the house was destroyed in minutes, burning down to nothing. This is how the villagers found him a short time later when they saw and came to his aid on the outskirts of their village. Ash kneeling in the ruins of his home, smoke still smouldering and the once silent, stoic rock of a man broken and weeping, his arms wrapped around a small blackened "thing" which they heartbreaking realised could only be his daughter, her body still burning hot to the touch in his arms, burning his hands and arms and chest as he held her fiercely, numb to the pain. It would take hours before the elders and healers could convince him to let her go and by then his bare hands and arms were scarred beyond repair, his chest also scarred but less severely due to his tunic, scars which would forever cause Ash a dull pain and force him to bind his arms and wear gloves to hide his scarred hands, still functional but the spears of pain lancing through them as he moved would forever crease his face with a scowl of pain.

In the days that followed, Ash would throw himself into his work, the rebuilding and burial of those lost to the 'Fall' in the hands of those more suited to the task while they tried to figure out what had happened to the world and what should be done. Even in his silent grief, he recognised he was changed by the Fall, in more ways than one. his finger nails becoming harder and sharper, almost claw like, he could feel the points of his teeth sharpening on his tongue..his senses becoming more acute, his eyes taking in more detail and more colour than before, the darkness no longer hiding the world from him to the point that he could see in even pitch darkness, he felt stronger and his stamina, already impressive from a lifetime of physical labour seemed to increase drastically, he found he could swing his axe faster and more easily, with stronger strokes and for much longer than before, working longer and longer hours and sleeping less and less. All of this could be seen as a good thing but the biggest change was his Anger. even Ash could tell this was more than just Grief Anger. no stranger to losing his temper as a child this anger burning in his heart was more primal and fierce than any he had experienced, even held in check it scared him as he could feel it boiling under the surface, almost fighting to be released, but if he did. could he contain it again? and what would he do while it ran free?

Ash withdrew from the village further from that fear, avoiding those villages who came to check on him in his mourning, taken to wandering the forest edge at night to avoid his nightmare filled dreams and sleep, the only person he saw who even came close, was the Delivery girl from the village Root, though she always stayed back and respected his space, they had always had that silent agreement in passing, she was always solitary like he was and one of the very few who wandered the Lords Forest hunting while he gathered and felled the trees for burning, a nod of the head at a distance their usual interaction. but now she stayed hidden and watched, without his new eyes he doubted he would have even noticed her there, if it was even her. she looked different now, only her clothes matching what he knew, had she done something with her hair? her eyes? she seemed lighter on her feet and moved with a sureness she didn't have before. the change so drastic Ash was starting to doubt it was even the same girl, he must be mistaken.

Arthur Rohan, Village Healer
HP: 10/10 | AC 10 | PP: 11 | Spell Save DC: 12 | Spell Attack: +4 | Status: Normal
HD: 1/1d8 | Spell Slots: Level 1 (2/2) | If you move at least 30 feet straight toward a target and then hit it with a melee weapon attack on the same turn, you can immediately follow that attack with a bonus action, making one attack against the target with your hooves.Charge | Your hooves are natural melee weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal bludgeoning damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.Hooves | You count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push or drag. In addition, any climb that requires hands and feet is especially difficult for you because of your equine legs. When you make such a climb, each foot of movement costs you 4 extra feet, instead of the normal 1 extra foot.Equine Build | Background: Arthur joined the Alchemist's Guild because it was one of the few ways that he could embrace magic, or something like it, without becoming a blood mage. Since his transformation, he found his potions became significantly more potent and versatile.Guild Artisan | Background Feature: As an established and respected member of a guild, you can rely on certain benefits that membership provides. Your fellow guild members will provide you with lodging and food if necessary, and pay for your funeral if needed. In some cities and towns, a guildhall offers a central place to meet other members of your profession, which can be a good place to meet potential patrons, allies, or hirelings.

Guilds often wield tremendous political power. If you are accused of a crime, your guild will support you if a good case can be made for your innocence or the crime is justifiable. You can also gain access to powerful political figures through the guild, if you are a member in good standing. Such connections might require the donation of money or magic items to the guild’s coffers.

You must pay dues of 5 gp per month to the guild. If you miss payments, you must make up back dues to remain in the guild’s good graces.
Guild Membership.

Appearance: Arthur is a male centaur with brown hair, and his equine half is like a painted quarter horse.
Personality: Arthur is fully aware of how smart he is; he's rarely rude, and he believes that he's being considerate, but can come across as condescending. He also has an eye for the women in the village. All else aside, he very much believes in his community and wants to serve it with his healing arts, and that he should be compensated for doing so (so long as it's something).
Backstory: Arthur Rohan was just coming into his own as an alchemist, having taken over his master's shop. He'd spent most of his formative years there, and it was the lion's share of his world. He'd barely been in business for a month before many of the villagers began to transform into creatures the world hadn't seen in years, himself included. During the night, he awoke with a crash as the bed broke under his newfound weight. His first thought was what women would think of him like this, although he's not exactly proud of that after the fact. He's spent most of his time since trying to study the transformed villagers to diagnose what's happened to them. Arthur is beginning to enjoy his new strength and speed, but is rather annoyed at how inaccessible his house has become. He hasn't quite decided if they are afflicted with a condition or curse or something else, and hasn't quite decided if he enjoys being a centaur or not, but he wants everyone to have the option to change back if they wish.

Hey Ysolde,

My Pc's application for the game!

i'm gonna be reading though it and polishing until the deadline.

I wanted to ask about names of taverns, inns or reputable lodges that may be known for it's food? In an effort to ground Florain into the narrative a little more.

There is just one Tavern/Inn in the Village. The only other place a chef might work would be Lord Valeson's manor. I haven't named the Inn yet either.

Okay heard that, Lord Valeson could have thrown a banquet that the inn helped cater. Otherwise Florian is employed at the inn.

Name: Lucy Fairbrooks
Occupation: Lucy is a cook, excellent at making breakfast. Likes to be imaginative in her cooking and baking. Sometimes spending a lot of time on a creation, occasionally too much as the head cook yells at her, “Lucy, hurry up you won’t be finished until after breakfast at this rate.”
Class: Wizard or Sorcerer
Gender Identity: Female
Race: Human
Appearance: Lucy is a little above average height and slender, with long brown hair. She is attractive and has a great smile and laugh.

Personality: Quiet and serious, she loves cooking but feels that she could be doing more to help her family and village. She learned how to read, thanks to an old nun in the village who saw the spark in her.

Backstory: When Silver Peak fell Lucy had been helping in the kitchen or so she thought.
She awakens in her room but on the floor next to her bed. Lucy feels strange slightly tingly or something like that. When she got up her hands and arms looked different but she could say how. She felt her head and her ears had grown and were now pointed. She screamed. She went to the mirror in the next room and looked at herself. She was prettier and her brown hair had streaks of blond in it. Her lips were fuller and her ears were now pointed, but they looked fine she thought. “I have changed, but why and how.”
She went out into the street and looked around, “I should do something, but…don’t feel like making breakfast or cooking>”

Please, don't start yet! I want to place an application!

...and here it goes:

Name: Neville O'Shea

Occupation: Drunken beggar

Class: Wizard

Gender Identity: Male/cis/heterosexual

Race: Human

Appearance: Long (and a little chaotic) hair, brown eyes, not very tall. Surprisingly attractive, after all the dirt was washed from a bath taken in the river.

Personality: Before the change, a drunken, dirty-mouthed rag of a person without hope or will to get it. After the change, a very well-studied, focused, well-balanced person who is not too angry about the fact that the more conservative-minded people still see him as a drunken beggar.

Backstory:
right-aligned image
As he returned to the village, he passed through the streets as if for the first time. Nothing was the same... he was not the same.

Yes, the headache... always the headache.

Only this time it was different. Normally, the blur of the usual poison would still be there and yet the mouth would feel dry and hands would shake almost too much even to hold the old jug gently filled by the tavern owner with whatever he had of worst... but that was enough.

This time it was different. It wasn't enough. None of that was.

Since he arrived at Mistvale, a good twelve years ago, he has been the town's beggar. Lots of merciful people really tried to recover that lost soul, only to be rejected so frequently and so harshly that they simply quitted. His pain was too hard to bear he just wanted to forget it - and that seemed to be the only singular victory in his most miserable life, for, after all that drinking and slamming his face into the ground, he could not remember a single thing of his own past, except for his name and the name of "Danielle"... whoever that one was or had been.

No job, no home, no morals and no perspective, he lived all those years from whatever the people of Mistvale threw at him or threw away. Wandering from the tavern to the backyards from which he was constantly expelled, nothing he ever did was worth noting, except, perhaps, for the remarkable capacity he had for hitting the ground hard while keeping his mug from spilling too much. That was a reason for bets among some of the most risk-avid locals. Would it end up empty this time?

That morning, though, it was all different.

His head was about to explode and he murmured apparently meaningless ancient words without even noticing it. Diagrams appeared in front of his eyes like the alcoholic hallucinations of the day before, but now they made sense... oh and how they made sense!

He tried to go for his jug, but the smell repelled him, so he threw it away. Rising from the ground, people looked at him in dismay as usual while he staggered towards the woods, remembering the intricate terminologies for magical casting elements he never studied. The names ached in his head! The speed of thoughts pierced through his brain like a rain of daggers!

He fell unconscious at least five times, only to wake up again with even more fragments of books in his mind. He tried to shout for help, but to no avail. The disorientation of those new concepts prevented him from even that.

Arriving at a cave, an abandoned gold mine that once was the reason for people to settle in those lands, he picked up a stone and started to compulsively draw all through the walls of the cave, near the entrance. Circles, triangles, strange characters... all that he could understand. He just could not understand why he was so helpless in face of the compulsion to write those things.

By the end of the night, the walls contained his book of magic, one he knew he would have to transcript into paper, eventually.

The man, a new man, rose from the cave deeply disgusted with his own smell and jumped in the river to wash his body... and perhaps his mind. He succeeded in what comes to the first, but the second was still there: the inexorable, dominating mind of a newborn wizard. He even knew what he was, although as if he read it in a book about someone else.

As he returned to the village, he passed through the streets as if for the first time. Nothing was the same... he was not the same. His hands were firm, his eyes were clear and his mind was sharp. All he needed was to start over... and to find a small, empty book.
