Thing is, I'd already shuffled the list when I realized there's an introduction at the beginning, so I decided to leave it in the list as just another theme, which happens to be the fourth one.

I feel weird about writing short stories, so this whole idea looks like to be chapters for a single story for me. That will also help me keep focus, hopefully. We'll see.

Innocence - WiP

 

Margha in prison! Margha!?! Unthinkable, especially with her naive and soft approach, they are going to eat her for breakfast. At 19 she is legally adult, so she'll do time with the hard ones, the murderers, drug traffickers, psychos, because she is accused of murder by negligence. Margha and negligence! Valerio snapped out of his musings and tried to concentrate on landing the ship. It was no use for Margha if he crashlanded on this ugly planet, or anywhere else for that matter. The storm didn't make it easy for him, but his ER pilot years taught him a thing or two, and the guys on the port looked at each other with approval in their eyes at the smooth touchdown of the small craft. She claimed she didn't neglect the care of the child, and I believe her without an ounce of doubt. She did make some mistakes, but not ignoring a child in her care, and when she messed up, she admitted to it. That's one thing she was way better at than me, and one of the things I adore her so much. She didn't just left the kid on her own to die. There's some foul play here and I'll find out what it is. Both their savings were gone on the bail, but at least Margha didn't have to spend time in until after the trial. Val didn't have a lot of money left, so he had to make some deals, and accept jobs of transport with his ship. Luckily, the Azure Hawk was perfect for that: small, agile and aerodynamic, capable of landing without the need for a shuttle. With credits left for another three or four stellar jumps, he hoped he didn't need to buy more fuel. Spiking her fruit juice to sedate her? She said it had a strange side taste and fell asleep for hours after drinking it. And when she woke up, the asthmatic kid was already out cold. Why? And who? The family wasn't at home, they had spent fortunes on their children and took them to the best places they could. Who the hell wanted the little girl to die? Inquiring about the family wasn't really fruitful, they were rich, closed to the media, and generally uncommunicative with Val. Not a big surprise, given he was the brother of the baby-sitter they thought had killed their daughter. He couldn't even get to talking to them, let alone ask them about Lulu. Cute name. Cute kid. Cute family. Something didn't add up in the situation. That's why he decided to visit her maternal grandparents on this backwater planet. They were rather distant with the lifestyle they led, though irregularly visited their little granddaughter. They loved her, they cared, and they weren't very pleased with the parents. Ideal people to talk to and get a feel of the family and their life.
