The DM HATED my character (mainly because of his stupid name) and waged a ceaseless campaign to knock him off with ridiculous traps and psychotic guards. Think he lasted 2 and a bit sessions before a doppelgänger killed him and took his place. Good times. Last edited by Flailsnail; May 12th, 2019 at 11:00 AM. |

MANY years ago, I remember making my first character. I no longer remember his name exactly, but he was a dwarven cleric of the Luck and Travel domains (this was under Pathfinder). We were a party of eight because we were mostly all good friends and our DM was pretty chill about everything, but we had to split into two groups in order to manage time. My cleric bought in with a party of martials: a monk, a barbarian, and a fighter (I think; like I said, many years ago). Basically my PC shined because he was the only one who could cast spells and I think I was reading some of the spells wrong that by the end of the year he was already flying and raining down ice/lightning spears at his enemies, to my friends' delight. He also ended up adopting a bear cub whom we named after one of the party's real life chow dog.
Our party ended up saving a village while the second half - the other four - were dealing with national crises and rising into the highest ranks of the monarchy, so they ended up changing the world more than we ever did. That party was made up of a crazy bard, a crazy ranger, a crazy ninja, and a crazy druid-barbarian (who was NOT a bearbarian). They all died making the transition from Pathfinder to D&D 5th edition, when life happened. |

I can't quite recall which was my first character, as there were two at about the same time in different games.
Jal Silvanus, a sorcerer from a long line of elemental bloodline sorcerers, who had his element stripped out of him by a djinn, leaving him with the arcane bloodline and a grudge. Or Miro, the halfling rogue with an attention problem. He would leap to conclusions, try to do the right thing while making a profit, but was often a little off the mark. He ended up being put down after being possessed by a lich. |

1977. Blue paperback with a dragon on the front. Remember?
I played an elf named Laurel. She lasted till about third level before being eaten by a bear, along with the rest of the party. She told them not to poke around in that cave. Humans never listen.

2016. 5E. I dipped my toes in as an insane half-elf fighter with a serious grudge against daemons. She invaded a daemon's realm before an early retirement because I had to move three months into my first campaign. She continues to endlessly slaughter daemons there with no desire to leave. This hell is her idea of heaven and I've heard that in the past few years the DM has adapted her into a Chaotic Good demon NPC that is basically Warhammer's Malal.

Ah yes, I remember the day well; it was in the year of 2015, when I created a hard boiled private detective named William Parker Jr - who went from mulling over evidence in his office one day, to punching old people in the basement of an apartment building the next!

In the year 1999, I became friends with the person who would introduce me to D&D. I had had roleplaying experience before that, but nothing that involved actual dice or rules or anything of that nature, so I don't really include it. The Edition we were playing was 2nd Edition D&D, or more specifically Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition.
My DM was... unique. Given my newness to the game, and both of our desire to tell a good Story, he worked with me to create a character that I would have fun playing. This resulted in him creating a custom playable race based on an Incubus, as well as creating a custom class which he called a Mystic Warrior. It was basically an Arcane Paladin, or similar to what we've seen in recent editions with Fighters that can cast Wizard Spells. Even though there was no need to, because of my background in story writing at that point, I wrote a several page backstroy for this character. He was quite an angsty demon that wasn't evil like his brethren and found their wickedness rather unnecessary. After some time being effectively a social outcast in the Abyss, he eventually escaped to start his own life on the Material Plane, as a Hero no less. His name was Saratek; a name I created from scratch while being bored sitting in study hall. And that is the abridged version of my very first character.

My first character was kind of complicated for me. I've always been a writer, but I actually drew the first character I ever made for an RPG long before he had a name or a backstory. His name was Elidark Galalo (Nightwhisper, for you who don't speak Elvish), and he was an elven nobleman who stole from the competing houses and gave to the poor. He was a rogue/wizard build, and he wore a mask when he went out to steal, soon known as the Immortal Shadow.
I made this character in 2014, while I was still hesitant getting into D&D. I was given a copy of the PHB by a friend's dad and read it cover to cover, quickly followed by the DMG. Most people tell me they couldn't have done that without falling asleep, but something about it just appealed to me, despite the fact that I haven't been able to do it with any other system or even textbooks. I guess there's a reason it's The World's Greatest Roleplaying Game.

I don't rightly recall my *first* character as this was like 30 years ago. The first I remember though was from when I was a freshman in HS. He lasted all of 5 minutes. The DM was a traditional sort that forces all new characters to start at level 1; even though the group were already levels 8 and 9. He was a human wizard; which I thought would be interesting given the area had tribes of barbarians (superstitious types). After I joined the party; i.e. found injured in a caravan that had been attacked by the aforementioned barbarians, we were heading back out across the tundra and came across a Remorrhaz... I casted my one spell and got rolled over by the stupid worm, killing me instantly.
My next was a priestess; capable of healing herself. She managed to catch up to the rest in level, but it was hairy. |

Insisted you play level 1 in a party of 8s and 9s?
Your DM had bad form on that day. Congrats on sticking with DnD, then and now. |

In regards of D&D, it was a pasttime for a long time; and I DMd many games in my teens and 20s but I moved to another country in my 30s and kind of stopped playing. I want to get back into it, but haven't been able to find players where I am. |

I think my very first character was in a Dragonlance: Fifth Age game around... oh... over two decades ago I believe. Also known as SAGA System, it was kinda sorta classless and used cards instead of dice. The character was human (I think) and built as a warrior sorcerer, but I honestly do not even slightly remember the guy's name.
From there I went on to play some AD&D and soon afterwards 3rd Edition and then 3.5 came out, which were my group's preferred systems. Ah, the university years and the nigh infinite free time that seemed to come with them...
