Fallout: Winter Wasteland

Game NameFallout: Winter Wasteland
Game SystemOther Roleplaying Games
ThemePost Apocalyptic Exploration, Survival, Adventure
FlavourCompanionship
Plot SummaryAn old sign on an overpass leading into what was once one of North Americas largest cities once read ‘Welcome to Toronto’, now corroded and down by time, all visitors through that main artery to the city are welcomed by the same words:

WELCOME TO

TORONTO

Much of the peaceful population are the descendants of the once displaced First Nations people, who were ironically saved by many of their population centers being distant from targets. Very few of the communities remaining had passed down the skills to live off the land that had been commonplace before the colonization and near genocide of their people by the imperialist nations across the ocean, but those few were enough to gather other survivors and pass on those lessons. When the bombs dropped, the one aimed at Toronto missed its mark, landing in Lake Ontario, not only destroying the city in the explosion, but flooding the city with irradiated water as well. The skies were darkened with ash and temperatures plummeted, turning the city into a frozen wasteland, preserving much of the prewar society that escaped the immense heat of the blast within their frozen hearths. The nuclear winter affected much of the country north of Toronto, and progressively colder and colder temperatures as well as dangerously mutated flora and fauna forced survivors in the northern reaches of Canada south to the ruins of the larger cities, of which Toronto was once more the most populated.

Initially, lonely scavengers rooted through ruins, hoping to find treasures beneath the ever growing layer of permafrost that had begun to settle, but soon, others arrived, with the warm, irradiated waters of Lake Ontario being the only thing keeping the nuclear winter at bay. Though the snow still fell and the cold still cut through cloth all the way to bone, occasionally the warmth of the lake would be carried up through the city by the lake effect winds, a microwave that warmed the body and burned the DNA. The fresh water of the lake had never been considered clean by Torontonians, but the radiation was much kinder to the fauna beneath the surface, often bulking the species up, slowing them down, making them easier to catch, and slightly less toxic than they had once been before the war, if you did not mind the radiation. On land, the mutations were no less impressive, with the most notable being what the locals simply call Bandits.

The largest community was centered around what was once known as Liberty Village, now simply known as Liberty to its residents. It had initially simply been a place where the fish had been easy to coral and catch thanks to the man-made peninsula which had been easily defensible even with minimal man-power and resources, and once those two issues had been resolved, the community spread quickly and effectively outward thanks to the generous fishing yields, access to lots of scrap and resources to build and the warmth of the lake. Currently Liberty is home to close to two thousand people, ghouls and even remnants of Unity. Here, almost anything can be found thanks to the flourishing trade routes that are navigated by skilled captains and merchants who brave the crossing of the lake as well as the talented crafters that have wound up there.

Things in El Toro are not all peaceful though, as outside of the safety of Liberty, the frozen ruins of the city are also home to dangerous creatures, the most dangerous of which are the raiders who reside in the shell of the Skydome, a once prized point of interest of the city whose sports fans once filled with joy. Now, it stands as a testament to violence, a colosseum where the basest instincts are praised and power is idolized. The current reigning champion of 'The Dome' is Gorge, a remnant of the Masters army whose right arm had been replaced with a flamer, and whose lack of direction after the fall found him wandering across the country with some of his fellow supermutants, before finding his new home and celebrity within the crumbling stone walls of the stadium. The raiders have a tenuous peace with the inhabitants of Liberty, though they are considered enemies if encountered in the wasteland.

There are others who had found themselves a home in the Winter Wasteland, though they are few and far between, each with their own reasons and goals. The Secrets of El Toro are many and buried deep, waiting to be discovered.

----------------------------

New Characters will either be from El Toro (For which there is a Homebrew Origin), or have arrived by boat from somewhere else, the current year is 2250, the Master is a long distant memory in the minds of the occasional supermutant, which can be found in El Toro, having wandered far since the fall of Unity, the only Supermutants in El Toro would be remnants of the Masters army (For which there is a Homebrew Origin). The Enclave is an unknown entity in El Toro, though that does not mean their presence has not been felt in such a way. There are no such things as 3rd generation synths in existence at this point in time, but the institute does exist. There is no active vaults in El Toro from which a Vault Dweller can be considered native, while rare, the occasional dweller does wind up in the winter wasteland. The Brotherhood has never arrived in El Toro, but this does not mean an initiate or scribe could have somehow wound up in the far north.

I'm looking for 4 players, ideally the posting rate is 3-4 a week, but realistically 2 is fine. There will be some combat, but I'm looking for a more RP character driven players.

Sounds fun. Do you have sources for the homebrew origins?

Are the two source books available?

Jade - Completed
Origin
right-aligned image
Survivor
Appearance
Jade, in her early twenties, stands tall at 170 cm (5'7") with a lean, athletic build that exudes both grace and strength. Her physique is busty yet slender, with well-defined curves that enhance her natural beauty. Years of surviving in harsh environments have left her toned and agile, every muscle a testament to her hardened lifestyle. Despite the rough world she inhabits, Jade is keenly aware of her allure and uses it to her advantage. She often opts for revealing clothing that subtly accentuates her figure, drawing attention without sacrificing practicality.

Her platinum blonde hair, styled in a messy, shoulder-length bob, frames her face in a way that’s both rugged and alluring. The wind often tousles her hair, adding to her untamed, rebellious look. Her most striking feature is her piercing blue eyes—sharp, always alert, and capable of disarming those around her with a single gaze. She carries herself with confidence, her sharp jawline and high cheekbones giving her a commanding yet flirtatious presence.
Personality
Jade is a striking blend of beauty, charm, intelligence, and ruthless survival instinct. She uses her natural allure to her advantage, manipulating situations with ease, but beneath the charm is a calculated, pragmatic survivor. Her resilience and resourcefulness have carried her through the harshest environments, and while she can be disarmingly flirtatious, her mind is always working, always assessing the next opportunity. Independent and self-reliant, Jade is a force of nature in the wasteland—a cunning, resilient woman who can navigate any situation with a blend of wit, strength, and calculated risk.
Background
Jade was born into a life of chaos and violence as the daughter of notorious raider leaders. Her early years were spent in the heart of a ruthless raider camp, where survival of the fittest was the only law. Despite the harsh environment, Jade’s natural charm and intelligence set her apart, even among the brutal raiders.

Jade’s parents, though fierce and feared, saw potential in her that went beyond mere strength. They groomed her to become a leader, teaching her the art of negotiation and the importance of perception. To survive and thrive in this environment, Jade had to show enough ruthlessness to earn respect. Lacking physical strength, she relied on her wits and cunning to navigate the treacherous dynamics of raider life.

Her world was shattered when, barely thirteen, a rival faction ambushed their camp. Her parents were killed, and Jade was captured and sold into slavery. She ended up in a brothel in a big city, where she faced unimaginable hardships. Jade had to learn the harsh lessons of hubris and do awful things to survive. She endured years of that, but her spirit remained unbroken. Despite the grim circumstances, Jade’s natural charm, cunning, and intelligence gave her an edge. She gained the trust of her captors and the other slaves.

Jade’s opportunity for freedom came during a raid on the city that set the brothel where she was held on fire. Using her skills in stealth and lockpicking, she managed to escape amidst the chaos and ran into the city. However, her hardships didn’t end there. She was constantly hunted in the big city, forcing her to fend for herself and become a skilled thief. The list of her enemies grew as months passed, and Jade’s opportunity for a big score came when she helped a group of raiders infiltrate the city. During the chaos of the raid, she managed to escape with the most precious items she could find. As the raiders burned the city to the ground, killing or enslaving everyone in it, Jade slipped away into the wasteland.

Now, in her early twenties and alone in the wasteland for months, she relied on her agility and perception to avoid danger and scavenge for resources. Her experiences as a slave had honed her survival instincts, making her a formidable survivor.

I can't apply, but I'll just poke my head in and give a very strong recommendation. Drinkslotsa gets what Fallout is about, and runs an excellent game. I speak from experience.

Yours inspired me. It was a game I wanted to get going for a long time, I tried it out over on Mythweavers, but I'm interested in getting as much Fallout TTRPG play as possible. I'd be very happy to have you involved.

HK-47- Completed
Origin
right-aligned image
military assaultron
Appearance
HK-47 stands out from the standard assaultrons with his gold and silver armor. He also has a laser attached to his right arm instead of the regular double claws. He also has a distinctive male voice as opposed to the mechanical female voice assaultrons are known for. HK constantly performs maintenance on himself and polishes his armor so he shines as if factory new.
Personality
HK-47 has a very odd personality like many old robots. He refers to organic beings as meatbacks and often expresses his desire to kill people yet he refrains from doing so unless attacked. This is due to part of his core programming that only allows him to engage combat protocols when certain conditions are met and even then he is only able to target enemies that qualify as hostile. He expresses great frustration with this restriction.

Despite this eccentricity, HK can form friendships with people who show a proficiency at killing other meatbags. He also shows a willingness to follow laws so long as following them is less inconvenient than the consequences for breaking them.

Hk’s primary drive is to find the other 49 hk units that were produced in his line and carry out their mission of defeating the red menace. Unfortunate he does not know where they are.
Background
HK-47 was one of 50 specially custome-made assaultrons with advanced programming and combat abilities intended to be deployed on Chinese soil where they could wage a guerilla war on the communists without human direction. Unfortunately, the bombs dropped before they could be deployed, so they sat in storage for many years.

When HK-47 awoke, he was in a garage where a survivor had brought him after buying him from a scaver. Apparently, the secret facility that had held HK had been broken into and he and his brothers sold and traded off. With no other purpose, HK’s advanced ai programing decided to track down and activate his fellow units in order to fulfill their mission of defeating the Chinese. How exactly they’ll get to china is a problem to be solved later. First he needs to find the others. The problem is he has no idea where to look, and so he wanders the wastes, searching and surviving, but most of all, killing any meat bag that tries to stop him.
