The Frozen Wastes

The Region Surrounding Icewind Dale
Background of the North
The region was first populated when Northlander longships reached the area during the last centuries of the Illefarn empire. Initially settling on the islands, the northlanders would eventually settle in Icewind Dale.

Icewind Dale has an icy tundra and is the northernmost known explored area of Faerūn. Its only permanent settlements are known as the

Ten-Towns, a confederation of a number of villages cooperating with each other to survive the harsh winters. On the northern face of Kelvin's Cairn, the only mountain within the region of the Ten Towns, a cave known as the Dragon's eye has been found to have vulcanic activity. There are

three lakes, whose temperature even in the summer months are cold enough to kill a man, are the only known places to find the Knucklehead trout, a fish whose bones are almost exactly like ivory. This is the regions most valuable resource and what the majority of inhabitants make their living from. A handful of equipment and tools have been made by the Scrimshaw of Knucklehead trout, which is a signature of fine craftsmanship from this region.

Icewind Dale is mainly populated by Humans, but have also been known to harbor Halflings and Half-Elves. The outer-regions hosts a very small group of Dragonborn and small settlements of Goliaths. The mountains harbor many Dwarven clans and even Deep Gnomes beneath the foundations of Kelvin's Cairn. The most common livelihood from Icewind Dale's inhabitants are fishermen, craftsmen, carpenters, ranger guides, Dwarves mining the deeps for minerals and precious stones, barbarians, hunters, and merchants who tolerate the hostile climate in the hopes of trading in ivory and gems for great profit.

The most common threats of the Dale, besides the harsh weather conditions, are raids of Orcs, Yetis, Feral Barbarians, Kobolds, Polar Bears, Winter Wolves, Frost Giants, and the extremely rare Lizardfolk and Yuan-Ti. The two latter of this list are never seen outdoors, and only find comfort from the warmth provided near the active volcano's depths. There are also rumours of connected caverns beneath the Spine of the World leading into the Underdark. The region is also home to a number of white Dragons.
