Right on. I was researching this yesterday and found reference to the optional rule only after I posted. I have some mixed feelings about the rule but in general it seems okay.

I was looking at the cover rules in the DMG though, and by their interpretation, I think the caster is under full cover? That is, you can't draw a line to the far corners of dude's box without crossing an occupied square. That would put the kibosh on all of this.

That said, this is already taking long enough to adjudicate. So here's my ruling:

1. Let's say it hits skellie #2 according to the cover rules.
2. Let's say, for the purposes of the dice already rolled, that the human has half cover.
3. Let's also decide, in the next day or so, whether you all agree with my interpretation of RAW with respect to tactical grids and cover. Because I think that has implications for the good guys as well as the bad guys.

EDIT: and 4. Let's say we'll use the optional "hits partial cover" rule because why not.

Just for the reference: Cover rules from the basic rules say the following:

Quote:
A target with half cover has a +2 bonus to AC and Dexterity saving throws. A target has half cover if an obstacle blocks at least half of its body. The obstacle might be a low wall, a large piece of furniture, a narrow tree trunk, or a creature, whether that creature is an enemy or a friend (BD&D p74)
So a creature will count as providing half cover. Unless it's a really, really large creature, I suppose.

Full cover basically means he's hiding behind a wall and can't be seen at all - maybe if the skeletons had some really really big shields.

Hmmm.

Now THAT would make an interesting encounter.

I'm looking at DMG p251, under the heading "Cover". I don't want to type it all out. Do I need to?

No no, was just clarifying that the PHB defines "creatures" as "1/2 cover" - so just like it was handled with Trouble's attack.

But that's not the case in the rules that I cited. There it says anything in the square, including a creature, is considered obstructing.

On hexes...
So I was wrong again. It would not be "sorry Charlie" it would be "three-quarters cover", using these rules. Yes?

As long as it's not full cover, Denovar doesn't care. He can hit it. (Thank you sharpshooter feat). In any case, I think the 3/4 rules make more sense, assuming the battle field is flat. This can get really complicated really fast, so I guess it will end up depending on how much you like crunching lots of numbers for the fun of it, or if you just would prefer to make a quick rule of thumb guide for us to follow. I am ok either way, just so long as we are consistent.

I've just read up on this - I actually didn't realize there was a section about cover in the DMG. I'm learning so much here as well! You would be absolutely correct via the DMG to judge it as 3/4 cover based on the angle of attack.

Like Bhel, I am quite happy to have a feat which allows me to disregard cover for spells unless it's 100%. So good.

So, I'm going to just assume that Rosemary didn't beat initiative and move forward. Expect things to "get real" within the next few days.

Ah, don't hate me! I'm still here - just had an interview fall through and I had to scramble to set up a few more - current job is ruining my schedule, among other things.

I shall renew my efforts. We'll see what I can do and when I can do it.

I don't hate you Mal. I love you! But I'm also realistic.

Hopefully you'll have Rosemary's character sheet done in time to act in the next phase, and after that I can puppet you if you're AWOL.

Magnificent!

Feel free to post through the next phase of PCs acting. According to the model proposed, actions will resolve in the order in which they are posted.
