Placeholder. Star.
Drake D'Argento
right-aligned image

Name: Drake D'Argento
Race: Human
Class: Paladin - Oath of Devotion
Background: Privateer
Appearance: Drake is a weathered, well-muscled man adrift somewhere in his middle years. He has mid-length, oily hair that does what it wants and calm eyes of an unremarkable brown. He tends to dress in practical clothing for the seas, and almost always wears his worn wool greatcoat.
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Chose a starting point: Passenger
Personality: Drake is accustomed to Command roles, but can follow orders as well. He was an able soldier for many years, and a successful privateer for many more. A successful commander is a detached one to his thinking. Most seasoned people are competent and want to do their jobs well. They also want to be left alone. Too much interference, and with little enough to show for it is a misuse of resources. He can fight on the front lines alongside his men, or take to the back to bolster their resolve and heal if need be. His is a versatile role.
Where did you acquire your talents?

"When the recruiters came to our village, four of us joined up on the spot. Why shouldn't we? We were young, full of dreams and the restless energy of youth. Certain of our ultimate destiny in the wider world. Such fools, aye and they knew how to exploit it. We left for a naval military camp for training, then got our duty stations. Pirates and sea monsters had grown bold of late, attacking transport ships and we were to serve as a military escort. After 15 months, I was the only one who survived. I'd shown some skill even heroism, whatever that means. So I was given a commission and the vessel as a privateer to raid the enemies of Katanian Noble houses. After a while, I no longer heard the cries of the dying or the cries of my suffocating morality. The drink helped me numb myself into a dreamless sleep. That's when She found me. I wish I could say I converted there and then, but she visited me twice more. Showed me things. Gave me a peace and purpose I never knew beyond the idle whims of the powerful and the ignorant bliss of the commoners. I gave it up though. Found a new purpose."

"A better one."

Officer Position: Captain or First Mate
Link to a Former Officer: Drake didn't like the Aasimar when they first met, and the feeling was mutual to Wirlir as well. But then plague broke out in the port and things like one's taste in drinking companions fell overboard. They both worked for days, numbed by exhaustion and the exertion of tending to the ill. You don't forget a thing like burying the dead together, or taking a double shift so someone else can get a few hours sleep- respect borne on the field. Difficult to keep in touch on the open ocean, but their paths crossed several times since. Drake chose The Boreham because of Wirlir. Felt like a sign. Might even have been, just not what either of them thought.
Reason you are a Passenger: Drake is semi-retired, and looking for a new venture or place to put down some roots.
Roleplay Sample: I can't think of anything good just now. Perhaps I will come back to this if I do. However, the link below has a game I'm running with examples of RP.

About you:

Realistic posting rate: 2-3 times per week.
Previous role playing experience: Extensive. I've run games and played them for longer than I care to admit in this medium.
Number of forum games you're currently playing: One. I'm running a game called https://www.rpgcrossing.com/forumdisplay.php?f=17096Arcadia University.

Name: "Sharkbait" (Shakur Seabeeze)
Race: Water Genasi
Class: Ranger (Privateer)
Background: Navigator

Appearance: He is a tad over 6’ tall. His head is hairless and smooth. A greenish gray skin covers his well-toned and muscular body. That same body is covered in scars and intricate designed tattoos. His face is usually stoic and his mannerisms are full of self-confidence that others might find arrogant. He carries twin swords on his waist and a bow on his back.

Alignment: CN

Starting Point Prisoner: Shark has worked on many a ships over the years. His experience is what drives his current and future decisions. He does not take to orders that are stupid (In his mind) or ill-conceived. It just happened that a first mate had ordered him to kill innocent merfolk woman and children. Now, Shark is known to be hard, vicious and tough. But, woman and children are off limits unless they tried to kill him. He explained that not only would that be immoral, but more importantly in his mind, it would bring the wrath of the merfolk and the ocean gods down on them and other ships. When he refused, the first mate tried to kill him, which his sad mistake. Shark killed him with ease. The rest of the heartless crew proceeded to slaughter the woman and children. Shark tried to stop them, but he was severely outnumbered and a wizard had cast a spell which froze him. He was sentence to banishment to Melithas vs. Death only because he was friends with the navigator of the ship, Boris.

Personality: He is a typical lifelong sailor. Tough as nails, lives a hard life and parties hard when not working. He is for the most part quite stoic. He is serious when it comes to sailing. He will obey the command, but he will not betray his beliefs and values. He is a good friend and worse enemy to have.

Trait: My friends know they can rely on me no matter what
Ideal: Freedom-The Sea is freedom. Freedom to go anywhere and do anything.
Bond: The ship is most important. Captains and crew come and go.
Flaw: I don’t follow orders if I think they are wrong. It will be the doom of me someday.

Background: Shakur Seabreeze was the outcome of the union of water genasi and a sea elf ranger. He was raised by his mother and taught the ranger ways. He spent many days and nights learning the ways to survive and thrive in and out of the water. It was his genasi blood that flowed through him that made him want to wander. Once he was old enough he kissed his mother, said his goodbyes to family and friends and headed out into the big world. He had sailing in his blood.

He sailed many a ships to many different lands and many different purposes on both sides of the law. He became quite adept at most sailing skills, but was exceptional at sea navigation. He was also quite good with a blade, bow or whip. All these skills had made him a valuable asset to any captain and ship.

He learned to fight and despise the Sahuagin, first as a child and later as an adult. The Sahuagin had many times raided his homeland. They were repelled, but always seem to come back. He now hunts them with a vengeance in memory of his kinfolk. It is why they are one of his favored enemies. His other favored enemy was the Seahag He learned to fight and hunt them while sailing with a mercenary group called the “Sharks”. It is also where he got his nickname, "Sharkbait". He would charge into battle with a fierce aggression that others said he would someday become shark bait and that moniker has stuck with him to this day.

The Sharks were paid to clear out some problems in the southern Bodesia islands. It turned out the problems were ambushes by Sahuagin, Merrow and they were led by Sea hags. The sharks completed the mission after several attempts, but not before losing more than 60% of their force. Shakur vowed after that mission he would hunt down the Sea hags as well.

He has continued to hire out to various ships over the years. He had a hard time staying too long with any one ship or crew. He liked to wander the oceans. It wasn’t until he sailed on the “Crabby Paddy" under Captain Horace and the First Mate Boris that he had real issues. They were clearing out some pirates and other creatures, but had taken it too far with the killing of woman and child for fun. It was that fateful day that Sharkbait ended up a prisioner. He killed the First Mate and was imprisoned. He was only saved from the death penalty because of his friendship with the Navigator of the ship. He was banished back to Melithas and was on board this ship heading for home.

Officer Position:Navigator-he is an expert at following any star at sea.

Realistic Posting Rate: Daily. Usually posting is set to others and DM’s pace.

Previous Role Playing Experience: I have been playing on and off since 1976. Table top D&D basic thru 3.5. I have been online playing for years. 2nded, 3.5 and now 5e.

Number of forum games you are currently playing: I am in 3 active games. 1ea 2ed, 3.5 and a 5e and have played up to 6.

Other notes: I am fairly new to 5e, just got into a game last month. I love to play and write and meet interesting people and characters in rpg. I do have some vacations and travel with work, but normally have internet access to post anyway.

Out of curiosity, in your game which ability modifier is paired up with Cook’s Utensils and Brewer’s Tools for the roll?

Depends on the situation. Could use any number of ability modifiers. But for sure Constitution for Cook's Utensils and Intelligence for Brewer's Supplies.

The Raider
right-aligned image
"For Glory, For Death!"
-WITHDRAWN-

Name: Yellow John
Race: Human
Class: Fighter (Battle Master)
Background: Pirate (Raider)

Appearance: If a man were to claim one thing of Yellow John, it would be that his eyes always watch. That they are cunning, intelligent in a way that most of his people are not. That they do not trust and they do not waver. His are the eyes of a wolf backed by the body of a bear. A body built of bi-frost ice with a voice that rumbles like ancient stone. Yellow John is a man who towers over his fellow men, foes and friends, with eyes that demand they stand as tall as he or die trying.

Alignment: True Neutral (Loyal to the strong, protector of what is his and thief to what you cannot keep for yourself.)

Starting Point: Prisoner
Crimes: For raiding the trade vessels of Katan. Yellow John was a known raider whose barbaric proficiency in murder and thievery made his name widely known in the ports. A name feared by cargo vessels and lusted after by privateers and common bounty hunters. That was, until he was captured. Before his head could be rightly chopped off however, it was bought by a Melithasian noble whose daughter had met her end in a battle he had taken part in.

Gold was a cheap price to pay for revenge.

Personality: Yellow John is a man motivated by power and that lust for more that was ingrained in him by his culture. Fittingly, he does not welcome those who do not fight, thinking them lesser. However, if he does see you as worthy of his respect, Yellow John will remain loyal to you and your cause, fighting by your side and backing your claim even when he knows you are in the wrong. The strong protect the strong. He is not without merriment though. Like any man, he enjoys ale, food and the pleasures of the flesh. It is just hard to get his guard down, especially now that he is so far from his people.

Where did you acquire your talents: Yellow John's life as a raider was predestined. His father was a raider, his grandfather was a raider and on until the birth of his line. That is all the Iskandari can do, all they have ever been meant to do. Crops do not grow were they come from. It is necessary. When he could not wield a sword, he learnt shipcraft and the stars. When he could, he went raiding. An Iskandar learns through experience.

Officer Connection: During a routine check by Wirlir to ensure none of the prisoners had become diseased or sickly (lest they die and the crew lose the money for their shipment), Yellow John broke free of his chains. He'd wheedled them down in their weeks at sea and when he broke free he nearly choked out the surprised aasimar. His plan had been to bargain for a boat with the valuable surgeon's life and, if it were not for Wirlir's assistants and some of the quick acting men below, he may have succeeded. From then on Yellow John has had no chance of a repeat attempt, wearing thick, heavy shackles that are checked on a daily basis.

Officer Position: Yellow John is not one to accept loss by something as petty as a vote. If one of the other candidates for First Mate beat him out, I would like for them to then fight and kill the rebelling Yellow John.
He'll still lose, of course. This is something to give whoever beats him a display and that extra bump of respect a First Mate needs.
First Mate
The PlayerRealistic posting rate: I am currently easily able to make 2-3 posts per week for any given game, but in the coming months this may lower. 1+ is just my absolute minimum.1+ posts per week.
Roleplaying Experience: I have been playing TTRPGs for 3+ years now. Most of this has been through online means using D&D Fifth Edition as both a Player and occasional DM.
Currently Games: I play Gurren in The Silver Marches and act as DM for Uncharted Lands.
Notes: I am in the military and will be traveling to a foreign country in a couple months, this is why my posting rate is as listed. I do not expect to lose all contact by any means, but there may be some days I cannot immediately respond in the not so distant future.

Rosa Cebolla

Name: Rosa Cebolla

left-aligned image
Race: Half-Elf

Class + Subclass: Sorceress (Shadow Magic)

Background: Marine

Appearance: Rosa has long black hair that lays easily upon her shoulders, and hide her Elven ears. She has a lean, strong body that many a man, and a few women long to hold next to them in the cold of the night. Her dark clothing hides the many scars and tattoos that cover her body from years of battle, and the last year of torture. But it is her eyes and pale skin that keep all potential lovers at bay. The irises are a barely noticeable grey color, while her skin never tans even under the hottest sun. Leaving many to shiver at her death-like visage, as they walk on by.

Alignment: Lawful Neutral, the orders of her Captain are all that matter.

Chose a starting point: Prisoner, being transported to her final destination, and eventual execution. Her crime was being a pirate on the high seas. She was captured after leading an unsuccessful raid upon what had been thought to be a simple village, ripe for the taking. Little did her Captain (or anyone else for that matter) know, it was a trap. Her Captain made his escape, barely. This left Rosa and her small force to fend for themselves. They were easily overwhelmed.

What would she do, to gain her freedom? She would hunt down and kill the rat-bastard that left her tortured and abused.

Personality: Rosa is cold. And lonely. She pretends that she has no feelings in her heart, as she has never felt the love of any besides her first and last captain (one and the same). She is, however, silently jealous of the affections she has witnessed others have with each other. She longs to know what it's like to feel such things. But until she finds someone who truly appreciates her, the praise of her Captain, whoever that might be in the future, will have to do as a substitute.

Where did you acquire your talents?: When the Half-Elf was a young girl (of approximately twelve years), she was found as a stowaway, and feeding off one of vegetables she'd found in the cargo hold. When she was placed before Captain Harlow, still holding her half-eaten onion, his heart melted and he chose to keep her as his own, naming her Rose among the Onions, or Rosa Cebolla for short. He taught her how to survive on his ship, and eventually how to kill others who needed to be killed. The rest of the crew has come to fear the captain's star, but also respect her dedication to the ship and crew. As for her magic, that comes naturally to her. She knows not where from, only that it is the reason she was abandoned by her birth mother. At first, she hated it, but Captain Harlow convinced her to see it as it is, another weapon in her arsenal.

Officer Position: First Mate

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~
About me:
Realistic posting rate: 1-2/week (More, if there is something to work with.)
Previous role playing experience: I've been playing since 1995, while in the Navy.
I've played: Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Ed., Cyberpunk 2020, Dungeons and Dragons 3.x, Dungeons and Dragons 4e, Dungeons & Dragons 5e, FreeForm RPG (GitP), Mage: the Ascension, Marvel Super Heroes (unsure of edition), Modern d20, Pendragon, Rifts, Shadowrun, Star Wars (West End Games), Streetfighter RPG, Vampire: the Masquerade, Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, Werewolf: the Apocalypse, & likely a few others that I don't recall the name of. The highlighted games are the ones I have the most experience playing.
Number of forum games you're currently playing: 4
Any other notes: I get along well with other players, and am not a glory hog. I play my character, and am not afraid of seeing her suffer grievous wounds, or losing her to death, as long as her story is a good one.
Name: Dalwinkle
Race: Forest Gnome
Class + Subclass: Rogue ~ Arcane Trickster
Background: Smuggler
Alignment: Chaotic Good.
Appearance: Dalwinkle is a rather unattractive gnome, due to his short nose and pale complexion. His beard is black and hardly pointy at all. He has beady blue-gray eyes. There is a slightly “burnt” odor to him. Dark clothes with rhinestones, stars and mystic symbols are his preferred garb as he believes they make him look like a necromancer. (They don’t.)
Chose a starting point: Prisoner
While in Melithas, Dalwinkle “borrowed” a pistol from one of his former clients, a snooty elf-lord named Galather. He was bored and the elf was notoriously cheap in his business dealings. The weapon was plated in silver, etched with delicate designs and inlaid with emeralds and lapis lazuli. Galather was, needless to say, unhappy at the loss of his precious firearm and offered a substantial reward for its return. Thinking himself safe in far off Katan, Dalwinkle showed off his fancy pistol to some of his shipmates. Among them was the quartermaster, Nior, who made a practice of keeping up with the latest bounties. The tortle confiscated the weapon and threw the gnomish thief in the brig. Dalwinkle was a peaceful fellow, preferring trickery to bloodshed. But being locked up started to make him stir crazy. He might just have to whack someone to get out of this infernal cage.
Personality: Dalwinkle cannot stand being in one place for too long. He constantly fidgets and looks around nervously. For companionship, he prefers human or elven women, and there associated half breeds, over the short statured races. If only he had the courage to talk to one. Telling the truth is not a concept he is particularly familiar with. Dal doesn’t care about being rich, but he likes shiny things and can’t resist taking them.
Where did you acquire your talents?: As it is well known, gnomes suffer from an affliction known as wanderlust. To combat the disease, Dalwinkle thought to join the crew of a sailing ship. Having no appreciable skills, Dal was sent to the galley to help the cook. The head cook, a dwarf called Taters, despised gnomes. He made Dal taste test all the food, producing such delicacies as poison starfish delight, sea cucumber pâté and drunken shrimp. When the gnome actually survived his cooking, Taters was impressed. He showed Dal some of his secrets, which had little to do with cooking. The dwarf was smuggling contraband, hiding the goods in the foodstuff which was scrutinised much less than the regular cargo. As Dalwinkle became more useful, Taters introduced him to some of his contacts. Soon Dal was handling the business by himself. If only he could control his sticky fingers...
Officer Position: Cook
Realistic posting rate: Minimum 1x per week is fine. My other games have been going on for years, so maybe I will make a post in one of them every week. I am looking for a more consistent posting rate and some quality RP potential.
Previous role playing experience: I’ve been playing D&D off and on since the 80s. I have been on this site since 2010.
Number of forum games you're currently playing: Five
Any other notes: I’ve started a lot of games which disappeared without a trace. Actually having my character killed off will be a refreshing change of pace.
Now if only some of the 1st mate candidates switch to bosun . . .
And it would be nice to separate quartermaster (person who buys and sells for the ship) and navigator as the skills are pretty unrelated.
No thanks, we already have a perfect candidate for Bosun.
Actually, here's the definition of a Ship's Quartermaster (not the same as on land): The quartermaster is the enlisted member in charge of the watch-to-watch navigation and the maintenance, correction, and preparation of nautical charts and navigation publications. They are also responsible for navigational instruments and clocks and the training of ship's lookouts and helmsmen.
It's true that we could do with some competition for bosun ^^ Seems the job isn't popular for some reason.
