Take off

left-aligned image

The day was quite clear, the weather oddly breaking from the overcast that had threatened to remain long after the storm had ceased its monstrous downpour and gales. Large puddles soaked slowly into the packed dirt road, the green grass shimmers with the leftover droplets still yet to be disturbed by new traffic set upon their blades. After attending to various wants and needs, the majority of you make haste to either follow or meet Olivia at the dry docks. Those that traveled with her, or shortly behind her, would barely realize that the dockyard even existed out in the middle of the plains, with nothing but small groups of thin trunked trees scattered throughout. Yet, there it was, planks of worn and weathered wood, tied together and built into several different posts that barely stood taller then the Savannah grasses of the plainsland.

It seemed strange, a bit, that this beautiful sky ship was tethered and secured upon the ground, but as you get closer, you realize that though it was quite tall, with the iridescent shell-like level , the length was no bigger then a sailing vessel. For the lot of you, the quarters would be on the over-crowded side, but as you stepped aboard, the space seemed to open up to a clean deck, with only minimal objects. A large grate which slid open by mechanical design, housed the lower deck, a place of storage, pantry and eating space. And the large pearlescent shell that housed the upper deck, was the Captain's Quarters and more storage. For a cargo vessel, this ship was neither simple or plain, it's large side and top sails gently billowed in the dock and it's rear multiple propellers bragged of it's speed capability, while four harpoon like crossbows warned it wasn't an easy target either.

Olivia and Mac set about their normal routine of preparing for take off, going through their mental checklists of all that needed to be done. From mechanical to magical, everything was looked at, tightened, oiled or worked in some fashion. Gajine and Vilthal not only admired but also took great stride to make sure they could study or learn as much as they could... even getting a good feel for the ship's balance, the layout and perhaps even where to hold on to.

The grandeur of the ship came into view for Gordon and permission was granted to come aboard as he stood upon the dock, eager to climb the boarding plank. MAC took time to help everyone as they came aboard, to climb over the railing and onto the quarter deck. One by one, you settle on the main deck,, listening to Olivia's instructions for take off and ready to go onward to Hence.

As Olivia begins to start the engines, the propeller in the back begins to spin slowly and then quickly turns off. It sputters a few more times as she presses buttons, pulls levers and checks her gauges at the control panel. You see her duck down and open a small compartment, her fingers at various mechanisms and gears. She shuts the small metal door with a <thunk> and begins the restart process over. This time, the propellers come to life, a whizzing whirl of motion that blows back the tree's just beyond the dry dock. She motions to MAC and he unties the last of the lines connected to the posts and the ship begins to move forward very slowly and now complete buoyant. The open fields ahead are checked one last time before Olivia approaches the helm wheel and pulls one of the three throttle levers backward as far as it will go. A second lever is pulled halfway until finally high enough and far enough to finish your ascent before the third level is pushed towards the right, and the sails react to the direction set. A dance of levers pushed and pulled and half turns upon the wheel eventually take you into the clouds.

Onward to Hence! I thought you guys would like to RP a bit while on board. Remember you have an hour before landing. So I would think 2 post cycles should work? If there's something that really needs compounded on though, Im not opposed to more posts. I have a busy week ahead of me with my volunteer stuff. But I should be able to stick to my regular posting routine. Im thinking Monday I'll make my next post even if we're still in the air. I have some stuff I gotta squeeze in somewhere while you're flying.

Gajine Flintshard
Male Half-Orc Cleric of the Forge

A quick jaunt to Hence then a skip and a hop back to Merchants to take care of Ellie's monster. Well it wasn't Ellie's Monster... was it? That lass was smart as they come but could she be the master of that beast and be sending us all to our dooms?!?....nah. He cracked a grin shooing the thought from his mind as he carefully watched the engine sputter to life. This type of thing was his one weakness when it came to crafting things; tinkering. You know, engines and all that fine-working stuff. Suit of armor? Easy. A finely balanced and sharpened glaive? Not his favorite thing to do but, yeah, no problem. A simple clock? Dear Gond why do these cogs pop out so easily?!?

But that all was going to change starting today! Olivia gave him the starting push he needed to get his mind working. Yeah, this thing looks like it could fall out of the sky any second and yeah MAC looks like he could use some work. But where was his giant metal man? Where was his airship?!? Thought so; and so he studied.

It felt good to be in the sky again, this was the second time in a week - and he had one more with the return trip! He was glad to be in the sky again. When he looked out and saw the others on deck with the sky as a backdrop he couldn't help but smile. Yeah, the sky was where he belonged and he would find a way to return one day. Watching Vilthal take a safety harness just to move about the deck was one of the funnier things he's seen in a while. It was odd for someone who was so enamored with airships, like him, to be afraid of the sky. Though, she might just be in love with the ship itself and not what it represents? Who knew, he wasn't smart enough to understand women - though he doubted any man was. He was keeping a firm grip on his journal this time around though. He would not make the same mistake again, not with the designs he had in it this time.

While writing down notes he paused to remember; he forgot to ask Vesper to name the tool he made. He'd have to do so later before they took on Ol' Grubby McGrubface in the sewer. He smiled again and nodded at the thought and resumed his work.

Andwair the Sentry

"Hey Andwair, can you do a favor for me?" Vesper asks as the group prepares to leave. "Can you keep an eye out for a few individuals while we are gone? One is a guard-type guy named Gary. The other is a rather large, and alluring, woman named Mekeet. If they come around here, can you just let me or Gordon know? Please and Thank You. Okay, Bye!" As per usual Vesper style, she doesn't allow him a chance to respond before she moves a piece on the chess board, says "Checkmate" and leaves.

Blacksmithing Basics

Finding a small spot on the deck of the airship, Vesper puts down Snakebite and her backpack. She pulls Nibbles out of her pocket and places the tiny brown mouse on her shoulder before pulling her newly purchased book from her bag. She immediately immerses herself in the book, absorbing as much information as she can. She reads through it much more slowly than her usual pace. Her eyes study and commit every word and detail to memory, intermittently asking Gajine for assistance with any concept, word, phrase, or directive that she feels uncomfortable with. Whenever he clears up the language for her, explaining things in a manner that she understands, she writes a note in the border of the page before thanking him and moving on.

Lady Vilthal

Vilthal was practically buzzing with excitement as her Olivia, Vesper and Gajine made their way down the street towards her airship. A thing of engineering beauty if she ever saw one! It was hardly aerodynamic with that large glass bubble serving as what she presumed was the bridge or some Captain's Quarters but she wasn't going to harp on it too heavily. It was a sight to behold and she was going to be riding on it! She could already feel her fingers twitch with excitement at being able to observe all that could be gleamed form the engine, to the mechanisms that kept it afloat, to even the balistae stationed on deck all around that she knew could with some tweaking!

She darted about the ship to help get things underway. Even stepping into the engine room to see how it would be coaxed into life and soon provide their momentum. Once they lurched away from the dock and were off into the air, Vilthal took a length of rope from her back, lashed herself to a central mast and watched the world sail by.

It was in that moment, as the ground below rolled past them and the wind wiped across her form and she saw just how high up they were over the land, that the Elf felt like an anvil had been set on her chest. Her knuckles went white on the railing and began to shake as she slowly withdrew from looking over the side. Her whole body went rigid and very slowly moved to a crouch. The Half-Orc would be present to seeing all this unfold, the tall Elven woman now curled up and leaned against the railing she clung desperately to despite being harnessed, looking much smaller in that moment. It also looked like she was muttering to herself, too softly to be heard over the winds streaking past the pair. Vilthal looked a shade paler and stared unblinking at the deck between her boots, her chest rising and falling rapidly, her eyes unfocused and distant, and her lips moving rapidly out of primal fear rather than her explosive enthusiasm.

Help.
right-aligned image
Gordon helped Kiirion onto the airship and then joined him, nodding and tipping his hat to the captain as his foot first hit the planks of the decking. If from a distance, the ship was inspiring, on her deck, it was absolutely exhilarating. "What do we call her, Olivia?" he asked in all seriousness. Everyone aboard a ship instinctively either rooted for or worked for her success and a name was the rallying call they all got behind.

He stowed his gear and tried to stay out of the way of the initial rush of activity. He did what he could, pulling bumpers and coiling ropes to match other coils he saw, but he wasn't a sailor, not that he wasn't keen to learn. In the end, as the engines started applying mechanical advantage to chains and gears and shafts, Gordon made his way to the bow of the airship and watched as magic and machine rose them into the sky and the grasses and trees slowly transformed to paint strokes and children's toys. The height made his stomach drop as they rose further and further into the air currents that Olivia knew would aid them most for a quick journey to Hence. A irrepressible laugh escaped him. This was the time of exploration. Of adventure. This was his time. He looked back to find other faces and share in the excitement. The change in positioning caused the wind to knock off his hat and he caught it deftly. It wasn't the first time the well-fitted but air-catching headpiece had pulled that trick. He saw Vesper curled out of the wind with a book as if she weren't on a flying ship. Gaijine was busily trying to learn and sketch everything and MAC moved from line to line under Olivia's direction. At last his eyes fell on Lady Vilthal where she huddled.

The gunslinger went to her immediately, climbing over the coiled ropes in the center of the main deck where she had put herself. She seemed oblivious to his presence but he lowered himself to her side anyway. He knew nothing he could say would take away her fear. Fear was irrational. It could only be faced and overcome at best or endured at the worst. Still his heart went out to the otherwise strong and fearless Artificer. He put his arm around her hunched shoulders and took a moment to run his hand over her short hair to calm her. Gordon brought her head slowly into his chest and let his breathing try and synchronize her own. The gunslinger smelled of soap and leather and gun oil with the trace of some sweat and cologne. When he did speak, it was calm and low and rumbled in her ear. "We are on a ship," he said, "Just like at sea. If you close your eyes can you hear it? The creak of the rigging, maybe even the swell of a wave. We are on a ship. Can you imagine it?" He stayed that way for many minutes before suggesting she lay back against the deck and open her eyes. "Just like on the ocean. You can look up and see the rigging and see the sky. There is no difference. Imagine that we are on the ocean, Lady Vilthal. It is a short journey to the nearest port. Try to enjoy the play of clouds." He stayed with her as long as she wanted or until he felt he could no longer be of help.

As he left, he noticed MAC looking at him before continuing his work. Gordon went to Olivia's construction and watched him go about his chores to try and learn what was needed to keep an airship in operation. Station to station they went until Mac finally said, "Help?" Gordon looked up at MAC to see what he wanted Gordon to do, but the machine was looking at Gordon's hat, not at a rope or Gordon himself. The man had just caught his top hat for the fifth time a moment before. It was an impractical headwear for an Airship to be sure and he grinned sheepishly. "I know, Mister Alexander Cullpepper. I should have stowed it with my other gear." He took the hat off and smiled.

But MAC persisted. "Help?" and held out his good hand. Gordon smiled as he finally caught on and pressed the silk hat into MAC's fingers. The robot straightened immediately to his full height almost giving the appearance of puffing out his chest and put the hat on his head. it immediately toppled off the slick dome and Gordon ran to catch it before it blew off the deck. Coming back to MAC he asked him to wait where he was and Gordon dashed off, returning a few moments later with two strings dangling down the sides from the purple band around the hat. He climbed up a nearby line and placed the hat on MAC's head, wrapping the strings around some bolts at the base of his neck to keep it in place. He hopped down to the deck again and gave him an appraising look. "Not bad, Mr. Cullpepper. Not bad. Though we should really have one made for you. I'll see to it in Hence." The strings bent the firm brim of the top hat down and it looked a bit ridiculous in fact.

MAC agreed, "Cat."
OOCTrying to begin to learn how to crew an airship.

Kiirion
right-aligned image

Nobody seemed as nervous as Kiirion was about the Nilshai, but then again, they didn't know as much about it as he did. Not to mention the fact that they weren't Wizards and didn't rely on magic like he did. Hopefully that confidence would help them in the battle if they were to fight the creature. Kiirion would all but useless against such a thing. The thought frustrated and frightened him at the same time. But, as much as someone like him could, he trusted his allies and would simply aid them in any way that he could.

He went with the rest of them to Olivia's airship and they all scattered about the ship. As they were preparing to take off, the Wizard decided it would probably be best if he stayed above deck. After getting so sick in the carriage, being in the open air would probably be the for the best. As they took off, two things happened that he didn't expect. This first, being that Vilthal seemed be terrified of heights, or airships, or something along those lines. The second, was that he wasn't. Though he was still surrounded by the chaos of X-2 he was away from every other person on the earth. It was a form of isolation that both familiar and relaxing. He felt less stressed out up here in the air, where one ship malfuction could kill them all, than with his feet safely on the ground.

Kiirion went over to Vilthal, the others were trying to comfort her, but he knew exactly what she was going through right now. He sat down next to her and Filia scrambled off of him and perched herself on Vilthal's knee. The familiar's tiny claws dug into said knee, not enough to damage, but just as a reminder that she was there. "Don't forget to breath." Was all he said. Standing up again, Kiirion leaned against the railing of the ship and stared at the world below. So small and so far away. He really had been expecting fear for being in the air for the first time. But as it turned out, airships weren't so bad.

Above the clouds

The clouds part gently as the ship steers and lifts into the higher atmosphere, the density light and thin as the wisps of its element flow around and past you until the ship breaks the lower shelf. From this level, the dull gray overcast moves beneath you towards the East, over the Dragonspire Mountain Ridge and further yet into the Wildlands where it turns dark on the brink of the horizon. To the West it's clear with a vague scattering of brighter, puffier clouds that no longer bring threat of rain for the day. Remembering her book on cloud types and weather patterns, Vesper only need to open the index to search for the name and perhaps understand what storm cycle was happening in the region.
The ship seems to steady itself as Olivia steers her with confidence and ease. It was all systems go from this point and the weather appeared to finally ease towards the West afterall. Though the ship wasn't as advanced as some new models in the region, the wheel could be left under MAC's care occasionally on days like this, so long as the air traffic was low. Looking around you, all seemed fine and steady. You'd need to get a better look from the Captain's Deck however to really gauge the situation properly. Knowing Hence was only under and hour at this point, however, it wasn't a major concern.

As the rest of you find opportunity abroad to learn and observe or simply just take the rare moment to relax, or perhaps you can't relax and are in the internal struggle of finding your "sea legs"....One of you happen to notice something peculiar off the starboard side. You can see Kiirion half leaning on the rail, his eyes following an airborne object headed straight towards the ship. Kirrion takes a step back, wide eyed and a bit confused as it gets closer, now only a few feet away.... The slender body of a pseudodragon with shimmering blue scales and long white wire-like whiskers is frantically flapping and zipping through the clouds. He sees Kiirion first and then realizes there's a ship right behind the man and quickly maneuvers and soars over the iridescent bubble of the ship. From above, you all hear him laughing . As he leaves, you realize he's wearing a broken leather collar on his foot.

Gajine Flintshard
Male Half-Orc Cleric of the Forge

With a rough draft of the engine mapped out in his journal he still needed to go through and mark out what parts did what. Then he'd likely need to check with Miss Olivia to make sure he was on the right track. Can't really claim you'll make the best airship of all time if you don't even understand engines. He was late to the game in that aspect, but there would be plenty of time to catch up. He wasn't the brightest bulb in the lot but he was fast to pick things up. The cool air snaking its way in to the engine room from the outside told him they were at cruising altitude and his inner-child demanded to go see the land from above. He had forced himself to take notes the last time he was in the air, he could aford a few minutes to relax before returning to his studies.

He looked out of the engine room onto the deck and saw Vilthal appearing weak and smaller than she was. He wanted to go provide her words of advice but the others appeared to be on it already. He smiled placing his journal into his holy pouch "We be strangers yet we're on are way ta bein family, that we be." Despite not being able to have a big family dinner like he wanted back at the Silversets they were all still here, together, and it was a really nice and comforting feeling. No telling how long this would last with how the fates seemed to have it out for them, so he would enjoy it whilst it lasted. Walking out onto the deck the half-orc let out a mighty stretch as he made his way to the side railing "Yer all lookin like ye having fun!" he glances down at the elf still looking as pale as can be and let out a defeated sigh, there was nothing he could really offer. She'd get over it with time probably. She and Master Kiirion had more of it than any of the rest of them did. Plenty of time to get over a silly little thing such as a fear of flying...or is it heights? He wasn't fully sure.

The land below looked just as beautiful as he remembered. He was home once more. He knew in his heart the sky was where he was meant to be. Gripping the rail with his left hand as his right gripped his left forearm recalling an unpleasant memory causing his smile to turn sour but his gaze to never waiver from the beauty of all before them. Its been over a decade but he still remembers it like it was yesterday.

Out of the corner of his eye he spotted Master Kiirion take a step back from the railing, an action that demanded the blacksmiths full attention. Turning he watched as the shimmering blue creature soared over the ship laughing. His eyes widened as a phantom pain in his left forearm seemed to scream out. Did just recalling his memories summon this thing?! Quickly grabbing Ol' Trusty from its sling not even bothering to draw his shield he watched as the creature flew above them and then away, laughing. The half-orc ran across the deck to the other side drawing his shield as he moved and watched it fly off his hand squeezing the handle of Ol' Trusty until his green knuckles went white. "Accursed things..." he grumbled before returning his axe to its sling and his shield to its strap.

He had spent enough time out here, even though it was a minute or two at best. It was time to get back to work. He started to make his way back to the engine room.

Olivia felt a great deal of pride as everyone marveled at the ship. It wasn't hers, technically, but it was still her baby and she took great pains in keeping it maintained and in good shape. She even had plans to upgrade it in the future so that it could fly to other states and see more of the world.

Everyone was in such a bustle that the gunslinger was the only one to approach her once they were on board. "Her name's 'Hyperion'" she told him, beaming a little at the interest. Usually, those who boarded the ship were under duress, fearing for their lives, and hidden away for a good part of the trip. It wasn't often that anyone really got to enjoy the beauty of it, or that she got to enjoy much company.

Quickly everyone got settled, the most amusing of which was Vilthal as she anchored herself to the boat, clearly enjoy the ship more when it was on land than in the air. She couldn't help but smile, remembering her first airship flight at 6 and how scared she had been.

They weren't far from Boury, but high among the clouds it felt like there was no one and nothing but them. Gordon even fashioned his hat for MACs use, which resulted in more than a little bit of laughter from Olivia. MAC turned to her and announced "happy," and walked back to the helm where Olivia stood. Olivia mouthed 'thank you' to Gordon just seconds before commotion caught her attention from the starboard side.

Before she could ask what was happening she saw a giant blue creature emerge from the side as Kiirion stumbled back. Olivia's jaw dropped and she started running back towards the center of the ship. "MAC, wheel!" she called, barely looking back before climbing up to the captain's quarters as if a monster were chasing her.

She grabbed a spyglass from her navigation desk and went to one of the many clear shields that allowed her to see out. Shoving it open, she leaned out, spyglass in hand, hoping to get a better view of the creature. The sun reflected off of its gorgeous blue-gray scales like they were small metallic blades. It's wings moved with a fluidity of grace that no human or machine could ever hope to achieve, the ship she was on included - itself only a pale attempt to capture the gifts this creature inherently possessed. Her toe caught on one of the small rails around the room to keep herself from falling out the window. She didn't even stop to think that perhaps to those below, her usual antics would appear to be anything but.
