The All Realm: Flames of Heliandria

Applications Closed

Game NameThe All Realm: Flames of Heliandria
Game SystemDungeons and Dragons, 5th Edition
Theme SongDragon’s Den - Dirk Ehlert

Theme
Royal Agents Rebuilding a Ruined Kingdom in the Age of Antiquity

It has been ten years since the Fracture, a salient moment in time when the barricade between the All Realm and the Dusk Realm crumbled, cursing mortals with magic. Since that moment, a new era has shadowed the All Realm and her people. Through the gloom, your twisting path has brought you to the island of one of the most powerful city-states, Heliandria. The successes and failures of its young, vibrant human prince soon became yours, with your fates intertwining permanently. But now, as the smell of sulfur peppers the air and roar of fire shudders beneath your feet, you and your prince must seek out distant shores… a new kingdom to call home.

But these lands of fog do not welcome you with open arms. Unwillingly, you both are caught between the clash of ancient elven dominance and the terrifying emergence of human ambition. Devoted to your prince, you must ensure his survival and carve out a throne of your own in his new kingdom... and perhaps even start beating the drums of the first empire of men.

Play Style
Gritty Exploration and Political Intrigue through Immersive Storytelling

At the heart of the game will be a collaborative story, one told by you, me, and the other players. Your characters will be key political players in a much larger, unfolding saga of power, dominance, and influence. You will be confronted with difficult decisions and those choices made will have lasting impacts on the greater world around you.

Although not a true sandbox, this game will very much be "open world" for you and the other players to explore, influence, and change. A minimum of three arcs or quests will be available for selection at the start of every chapter, each with a clear storyline direction and a dominant playstyle, such as combat, exploration, or intrigue. Once the arc has been selected by the group, the remaining two may reopen for the next chapter or could be closed permanently. Nonetheless, the simple act of choosing one over the others will have lasting impacts on the story.

Regardless of the arc selected for each chapter, choice and intrigue will be featured universally throughout the game. You and the other players serve as vital advisors and agents of a powerful sovereign, with each player at odds with one another, vying to be the most influential voice on the small, intimate council. While you must unite with the other players as powerful external forces rally to exterminate all of you, you would be naive to ignore the internal threat from one another and the danger of losing your prince’s favor to another voice...

The ideal player types for this campaign are the true actors, explorers, problem solvers, and storytellers in the crowd.

Posting DetailsPosting Rate: As the DM, I will plan to generally post once a week for the group, with the expectation that players are able to post before I do. This may increase if there is a general consensus (myself included), particularly during intense dialogue or combat scenes.

Posting Quality and Style: I love to write. I love to write with others who love to write. In my experience on other PbP sites, this means I typically produce a 4 to 8 paragraph DM post each week, with a more sizable, narrative piece once a month. I do not expect players to do the same, but I do ask for writing with some effort poured into it. This generally means more than a couple of sentences, with the ideal player size (for me) being two to three paragraphs. However, I will never enforce this, just encourage it!

Application Details
Number of Players: 6 to 8
Application Deadline: July 21st

Character Creation DetailsStarting Level: You are a high-skilled and experienced character, potentially well-traveled, though not necessarily well-known. Your reputation is measured independently by your Prominence score. More on that after acceptance into the game.6th
Ability Scores: Each of the players roll 3d6+4, dropping the lowest, 6 times. The numbers are all listed on a grid vertically. This is repeated until all players have rolled. Once the final grid is created, each player may select any row and then assign those numbers as they see fit to their Ability Scores, their Prominence, and Royal Favor.Player Group Array Grid
While dwarves, halflings, half-orcs, and tieflings exist in this setting, they would never be found within a royal court or the inner circle of a Celestial monarch. To make up for the lost options, I have created 10 new subraces and bloodlines for human, elf, and half-elf characters.Race: Amaranthine, Dune, Empyrean, Sylvan, or Tempest Elf. See the All Realm Campaign Supplement for more details.Elf, Centuar, Feral, Manticore, Siren, or Sphinx Bloodlines. See the All Realm Campaign Supplement for more details.Human, May mix any elf subrace and human bloodline. See the All Realm Campaign Supplement for more details.Half-Elf
Feats: All characters, not just humans.Bonus Feat at 1st level, Feats are required to be taken instead of the Ability Adjustment available every 4 levels.Feat at 4th Level instead of Ability Adjustment
Alignment: No evil character will be considered. Lawful, Neutral, or Chaotic alignments allowed.Good or Neutral only
Class: Magic users (divine or arcane) or stealthy manipulators likely to get the most out of the game in terms of intrigue and plot hooks, though combat will certainly have its place. I will consider UA classes on a case-by-case basis.Any from PHB or XGtE
Wealth: 10 GP to 5,000+ GP, depending on Prominence. More on that after the character is accepted. Try to have a general sense of social class and rank during character creation.Variable

The All Realm Campaign Supplemental Guide
The above linked PDF is a helpful supplement to understanding the All Realm in greater detail. In particular, it lays out the racial bonuses of the elves, humans, half-elves, and the many varieties between the three. It also has a brief section on equipment changes, though these are mostly flavor alterations to bring weapons and armors more in line with classical era technologies.

At this stage of the application, it is not required or expected to read through the supplement. But if you want to spend a little time going through it and using it to help shape your character now, then I highly encourage it!

Is this a typo, or are we really dealing with (the remnants of) an Empyreal-founded Celestial city-state that has been taken over by a human family who have managed to somehow make themselves recognised as nobility?

What's the role of bards in the setting - are they like sorcerers and wizards, now noticing that weirdly, their music seems to have supernatural effects, which isn't exactly what their kithara instructors had led them to expect?

EDIT: And who are the gods? If divine spellcasters used to be the only ones for a long time, it seems this is in need of elaboration.

Hey Mairien!

Nope, no typo. You're right on the money with your thinking I'm leaving the details about it vague, in case any players want to be directly involved in that piece of the story's backstory.

As for bards, I think you've summed up my thinking about their magic nicely. If you have alternative ideas, though, let me know!

It's a good question about the gods. In general, I'm using the Greek pantheon, just renamed and perhaps reflavored a bit. However, my preference would be to let players have first stab at naming, describing, expanding, and detailing any of the gods before me.

Hello!

Neat setting, with a lot of work done for it - kudos to you!

I'm still reading over things and chewing on ideas, but one came to mind that I wanted to inquire a bit about. You mentioned considering UA classes on a case by case basis. What would you think about the latest Artificer revision as a 'natural philosopher' using the Alchemist subclass, or a, well, regular philosopher using the Archivist subclass? Just figured I'd ask, before I start to try to pin down any ideas.

Thank you!

Hello Lord99!

Thanks for your kind words! I just reviewed the Artificer UA pdf and all looks fine to me. An alchemist, in particular, would have a nice, defined niche, as poisons and diseases will play significant and frequent roles in many combat (and non-combat!) scenes. One of my house rules makes poisons and diseases more difficult to treat (no more instant cure all with basic spells!) and instead requires complex anti-toxins or elixirs to be brewed.

So yes, I'm fine with that UA material if you want to pursue it!

Very intriguing. And a neat game app. Well done. I hope to put together a concept very soon.

Format stolen shamelessly from Oghain.

App
.Name: Marcus Lucretius Cybano

Race: Chimera Amaranthine/Manticore

Age:45

.
left-aligned image
right-aligned image
Description: Marcus is a man approaching the age of wisdom but not yet so old as to become disconnected. He carries himself with the obvious bearing of a soldier, straight-backed and with movement efficiency. From his heritage, he has dark hair that tends to curl if cut short and a beard that graces his face. His eyes are the most striking part of his otherwise nondescript look. They are cold and piercing and do not blink or look away when they have yours. He is of average height and lean, not imposing physically from afar. But nearer to him, there seems to be an aura about him, an extended personal space that shouts "Danger!" or "Safety!" depending on what side of his you are on.

He wears simple clothing when traveling, a tunic and pants and tough leather sandals or boots depending on the weather. In the comforts of home, his choice is a homespun philosopher's robe. But now in the service of the prince he has adopted his old uniform commensurate with his role: a hopilite helm and shield with a manticore scorpion adorning it, a dory spear and a bundle of javelins, a spatha sword signifying rank, and an unrestricting cuirass to cover his vitals. A purple cloth that might be used to wipe away blood hangs from his belt.

Character Background
Personality Traits
  • : Soldier StatesmanBellator Politico Marcus approaches most people, enemies or friends, with a sort of bemused detachment. An Epicurian, he holds Courage and Honor high among the virtues and backs down neither from physical nor philosophical confrontation.
  • : Voice of the PeopleVox Populi A chimera, and one who spent his life on the edge of All and Dusk, Marcus knows what it is like to be an outsider and looks for the good in all men and women despite their circumstance.
Character Flaws
  • : Horror of WarHorror Belli: Shortly before his campaign as a soldier ended, Marcus made a grave tactical error while fighting an enemy he knew well. Tens of men died under his command. He is haunted by the mistake in nightmares and will do anything to keep the truth from coming out.
  • : Hypocricy and HeresyHypocrisis et Haeresis: "To Man, that which is Man's and to the Gods, that which is theirs." He is outspoken against the worship (fear) of the Gods and his big mouth gets him in trouble. Yet in times of turmoil, Marcus still prays.
Background Bond
  • The Social ContractContractus Socialis: For all good, good returned. If a person fights by Marcus's side, that person is worth dying for. If a person defends him, they are owed defense as he is able.
Background Ideal
  • Law and OrderIuris et Ordo: One should respect hierarchy as it promotes an orderly society. But know that there can not be a top without a bottom and vice versa.
Trinket
  • Memento: It is from the banner from his last campaign. It is purple and hangs from his belt no matter the occasion. It is a reminder of his failure and talisman of self-doubt.

Name: Luvon Eladan

Race: Chimera - Empyrean Lineage / Siren Bloodline

Age: 162

Description: Hazel eyes peer through a natural mop of honey brown hair as a smirk stretches knowingly up his high cheeks. The Chimera folds his hands and places his chin upon his thumbs as he waits for an answer to the question he put forth. Beneath the fine cloth shirt one easily notices the strikingly chiseled and slim physique with crushingly beautiful angular facial features that this particular half-elf sports. These things are unsurprising when one learns what Ambassador Luvon Eladan's lineage is. His particular Chimera mix combines the natural beauty of the native Empyrean and the advanced human breeding techniques of the seafaring Tempest Elves.

Delving back into the Ambassador's eyes reveal a coldness within that many attribute to the experience of a full life lived as Luvon appears to approach a Chimera's middle age. His elven heritage does still holds back most of the signs of aging except for tiny crow's feet at the corners of his eyes. When in public, especially when at the young prince's side, he is immaculately dressed and is always garbed in the latest fashions. Upon his person Levon always carries a small black box of jewelry that he uses to help accentuate his status and natural beauty.

Character Background
Personality Traits
  • 1: Stuck Up - I don't like to get my hands dirty, and I won't be caught dead in unsuitable accommodations.
  • 2: Fashionable - I must always look my best because you never get a second chance to make a first impression.
Character Flaws
  • 1: Politician - The ends (my advancement) justify any means.
  • 2: Gluttony - I have an insatiable desire for carnal pleasures.
Background Bond
  • 1: Diplomat - My house's alliance with Heliandria’s noble family must be sustained at all costs.
Background Ideal
  • 1: Independence - I must prove that I can handle myself without coddling from my family.
Trinket
  • A small box filled with different bits of jewelry - As a minor aristocrat he keeps a box of jewelry on hand to accentuate his fine sets of clothes.

Writing up a proposal; i have an idea for a warlock that might be fun. Actually...two ideas, hehehe. The dark and the light!

Maybe I'll propose both. One would be a hexblade/shadow sorcerer...the other a celestial pact/divine sorcerer...

The second would be interesting with the emphasis on divine magic in the setting though. How does the world adjust to someone who accesses divine power without that kind of devout relationship normally required...

HMM.

I'll think on this!

Ack! Sorry, Mostlymad. I had originally been working on this ad in a private thread with the images attached there. Attached them to this thread instead. Hopefully, they should be working now. Tried it in a few different browsers and it seemed to work.

Working now and the images look great!

Maybe I missed it but how would Elves become part of the Prince’s inner circle? Also where in relation to the five Elvish kingdoms are the humans coming from?

Glad it's working now, Mostlymad! As far as becoming part of the Prince's inner circle, that's all up to you. The Prince himself is human (technically 3/4 human, 1/4 elf), but his father, the king, is half-elven. And since Heliandria is still a Celestial City-State, elven presence in the royal court would still be high. And unlike other royal courts, human presence would also be up!

As far as where humans are coming from in the All Realm, that part is intentionally left vague. Elves claim they "rescued" humans from the Dusk Realm and in turn, enslaved or indentured them. Humans have no kingdom or territory to speak of. At most, they are citizens, and at worst, slaves in an otherwise exclusive elven society.
