It's 1256.64 square feet.
I think we're fine. ![]()

Well, the back-of-the-napkin math I did suggested that we needed to arrange 6 tents with a 5' x 7' footprint (at least) along an arc with a radius of 11', which in turn has a circumference of ~69', so we would then have about 2 feet of campfire, 9 feet of walking/sitting room, then tents. The tents aren't quite staked corner to corner but there's slight less than a foot between them unless we want to "close the circle".

Vol has a hammock, not a tent. He'd be perfectly comfortable covered in snow, so he doesn't really need one. Since my hammock takes up only about 10 square feet, and my bear and gear are in the same squares, it should free up a bit more space.
But sounds good.

For reference since somebody mentioned this.
The way I treat Profession skills is as follows. 1. During downtime, you can use them to make money in the standard fashion. 2. You may also use them as "Knowledge" checks regarding your profession. 3. Any task that involves that Profession, that isn't covered by another skill check, may be covered by a Profession check by DM fiat. In this case, I'm fine with all of the Profession: Soldier type to apply this to the basic tasks of making camp. It won't help with foraging for food (since soldiers tend to travel with rations, or bad things happen), it won't help for finding the best campsite (since soldiers tend not to worry as much about the weather), but it will definitely help with setting up tents, gathering for the fire, etc. |

Could it also function as a kind of Knowledge: Tactics roll?

Depends on the circumstances and the nature of your profession.
For example, an Aundarian soldier will know more about the implementation of magic in tactics, while a Karrni soldier probably has a more traditional training from Rekkenmark. Basically, it depends on the background of your character a little there. |

Thanks for that, Asura.
The Profession skill is often considered useless; I don't think it is, but it is circumstantial. Vallo has ranks in Prof Soldier +3. Because of his background as Aundarian officer I agree that it does not help Survival or Perception (for keeping watch). It will help in keeping and striking camp, morale (with mooks, not our party), and tactical knowledge. I agree that Vallo's best use for P.s. is understanding of tactical magic use in battle. |

Holgar has ranks in Smith and in Soldier. I'm going to use them for as much as they're worth, which maybe isn't a whole bunch, but they're ranks I could have put somewhere else. Cosnequently I think it's up to me to make the case for using them, and up to Asura to judge when my case is strong versus when it's weak. Between the two of us, I'm sure we can make them worth as much as any other skill.
I like the way Asura has dissected "setting up camp"; I think I'd add that what I know about setting up camp is pretty much exactly how they train soldiers to set up camp, which is very formulaic. It's effective in a wide variety of circumstances, but it's not something I know how to adapt to various situations (without additional skills) and it's not really designed for a camp of six people so much as for a whole company. So if you think about what that would mean to have the very narrow band of knowledge "how to do my part setting up a military campsite" that's pretty much what you know. |

I'd say ranks in Profession: Soldier could also be used in other creative ways.
Such as giving tips on how to march, so that you can Aid Another with it on Endurance checks. Something like that.

I'm not going to post until a few others have a chance to see what they do- particularly Vallo. The Wall would give some a time to extricate themselves from their beds, but other than that, I'd like to make sure that Vallo at least can get a shot off if he wants.

Megiddo, I have made my move for Vallo. It seemed sensible, yelling people to wake and buying time will hopefully work.
But please do wake up. Even if trapped, those boars, possibly dire boars, can hit hard. Vallo can probably kill one a round, but he will be f*cked afterwards, although he hasn't replenished his spells yet. Also, three boars, unless they are super demon boars, are not tough enough for us. Expect sneaky GM and reinforcements. |
