Phol
right-aligned image
As the spirit retreated, Phol pulled any that remained up the ladder and pushed on ahead out of the woodcarver's shop. Once back in the evening air, still breathing heavy he asks, "What....what did we just witness? Was that the risen woodcarver? What of his words of dying again and again?"

He looks to Hemdan, perhaps the learned goblin has answers though Phol does not exactly expect any.

"We should away. Away, says I! Before any spot us near and know we had some part in the fire to come."

Their path to the meeting was ahead, no reason not to hurry along now.

Still trying to help Stahl as best he can, but he his surprisingly heavy, he's pleased to hear the rest of the group catch up. Phols question is intriguing to the little Goblin but his knowledge of these creatures is likely just as limited to hearsay as Phols still... "Well, Its already died and yet it keeps going and going and going. Perhaps that's what immortality looks like". Hemdan had never pondered on immortality or death for that matter, a folly of youth most likely, but now...

"So back to the Inn?"

Outside
Year 1165 - Springrise (early spring season) - Evening Quarter (Day Two)

Weather: Clear

Returning to the village street, the aftermath of the group's carver's shop antics were yet to reveal themselves. Perhaps there was the subtle scent of burning wood on the air, but such an aroma didn't really seem out of place. Here and there from the simple homes around the hamlet, smoke was rising from chimneys too. Dinners cooking and living spaces being warmed up. Perhaps it would come as a blessing too, that there was no gusty breeze blowing, and the village structures were fairly well spaced apart. Who knows what the scene might look like in an hour or so though...

So, the old carver's shop had brought them nowhere closer to unraveling any missing children secrets. Was this even their primary concern now? Either way, loitering outside a soon to burn workshop probably wasn't wise.
OOCUp to you what you'd like to do next. These are a few options just to stimulate some OOC decision making:
  • Stick to the plan and visit Dorn the baker, whose Son is missing.
  • Take a tour of the herb garden with the Inn owner's wife, Bethe, who can help show you where the old druid lives.
  • Go back to the Inn and rest up.
  • Flee the village and find somewhere else to cause chaos XD.
  • Etc

Oniver Stramont
right-aligned image

Oniver's eyes flashed open as the oil came alight, surprised by his own rash decision, and he urged Egen to hurry before the entire cellar erupted in a conflagration. His words died, however, as the eccentric old man met a bloody end at the ghastly hands of the pale apparition, whose ominous words seemed to cut clearly through the crackle of burning wood. Having just been witness to a murder, Oniver stood in shocked paralysis for what seemed a long while, but Phol's voice suddenly from nearby revealed that mere seconds had just passed.

"Yes, yes," the peddler murmured vacantly, before resuming some of his usual cadence. "Let us away from here. Best we find ourselves a suitable alibi to absolve ourselves of any connection to this place." He quickly swept his gaze around the room as he helped Hemdan guide Stahl to the exit. A few items were moved around, but nothing that would really point to the Kiersapians. Except... the footprints in the dust! Any investigator worth the name would easily notice the various different prints, and the small goblin boots would be a dead giveaway once word of the strangers began to spread. Perhaps, Oniver hoped, the sudden disapparance of Orin would be suspicious enough to obfuscate an investigation. The fact that the merchant felt himself become protective of Hemdan was telling, but it was a revelation Oniver did not pickup on at the moment. There were more pressing matters to deal with.

Once outside, a chill ran up the peddler's arms, and he wasn't sure if it was from the cool, night air or the gruesome scene he had just witnessed. Regardless, Oniver rubbed the goose pimples down, then saw to making sure the door to the woodcarver's shop was firmly closed before stepping into the road to join his companions. Hemdan, still acting as a source of support for Stahl, proposed a request in the form of a question. Clearly with the rider's wellfare in mind, he asked about returning to the inn. Oniver shared a glance with Phol, seeking the hunter's opinion, but turned back to the goblin. "Where's Orin? I did not see him inside. I do not think he followed us. Perhaps he went ahead to meet with this Mister Dorn, as we had intended to? Would it not be prudent to continue that course, injury or no?" He smiled at Stahl, a look somewhere between compassion and pity in his eyes, but then his face became grim and his head swiveled sharply toward the door they had just exited. "At any rate, we should move away from here."

OOCOniver is concerned with finding an alibi, and talking to the baker might be best one at the moment. Although he didn't really care about the missing children earlier, he's definitely going to make an effort now in order to distance himself from any potential arson charges.

Also, his lantern is still lit, I suppose. Might help in finding baker's shop/house now that their guide (Orin) is gone.

The half-elf nodded at Oniver's suggestion, "Aye, though a strong cup would be well now we should press onward. If any ask we can certainly claim to we were with the baker at the time of the fire."

Of Orin he only shook his head; supposing that the sight of the risen woodcarver had driven the poor soul from the shop in terror.

"Well Stahl, you well enough to hobble over to the Bakers?", at mention of the Baker Hemdan's mouth goes wet with the thought of fresh bread. Not hungry just greedy his belly still full from the meal at the Inn "I'm happy to help you over there and we can check out the bread!"

BreadThankfully, Orin had pointed out the village baker's home prior to the detour into Ephes's workshop. It was a short walk northwards through the village, and stood out easily enough. Another timber home, though its chimney section was wider and protruded higher than most of the other homes. From the stack, a gentle haze of smoke was issuing, and along with the now very familiar scent of smouldering local timber, came just the smell Hemdan had been hoping for. That delicious bready smell, like a gently flame-licked crust on freshly heated loaves. At the front of the home was a large patio area, where several empty wooden racks stood. Earlier in the day they might have been loaded with the baker's goods for the day. There was a window to either side of the closed front door, and from the inside came several sounds. A woman sobbing, and sometimes the muffled sound of impact, like dough being beaten half senseless...

Oniver Stramont

With the lantern held before him, Oniver lead the way through the narrow streets, trying very hard not to look like someone who had just caused a housefire. He accomplished this, naturally, by obsessively fretting over the fact that he was someone who had just caused a housefire. The party moved slow on account of Stahl's ankle, and this gave Oniver time to ruminate on some of the things that happened back there. Speaking over his shoulder, he asked the others, "Do you really think they were brothers?" The lack of a smile and the flat tone to the peddler's voice made it clear that there was no trickery or subterfuge to his words. He was as serious as a head wound. "And what was all that about his wife? Do you think Egen..." Oniver trailed off, unsure exactly what he was thinking himself. Before he died, Egen claimed to know nothing about Ephes's wife. But isn't that a weird thing to claim about your own brother? Oniver shrugged and made a dismissive moan, as if to say "it's not that important." There was a lot of weirdness going on in that house, so can Egen really be blamed for acting weird? What with blood dripping from his eyes and all. Heck, even Hemdan had blood dripping from his eyes!

Hemdan! A genuine concern for his goblin companion brought Oniver one-hundred eighty degrees around, holding the lantern up to peer into the little guy's yellow eyes. "How are you feeling? I saw blood on your face just before the pounding started. Right after you—" Right after you found something, Oniver finished silently, and his gaze drifted slightly toward a fold in the goblin's cloak. Abruptly, the peddler flashed his teeth in a smile, and his voice lilted as he spoke. "Ah, ho ho! You look fine! Healthy as a bull, eh?" With that, Oniver turned around and resumed his lead.

The baker's shop was easy to find. It looked exactly like any baker's shop back in Kiersap, and with only fifty or so residents, it was likely the only full-time bakery in the village. Orin, however, was nowhere to be seen. Perhaps he was already inside. Oniver mounted the patio, threw back his cloak so he didn't look like a thief, and approached the door. But before he knocked, the peddler cocked his ear toward it, listening to the sounds from within. His brow furrowed in thought as he heard a woman sobbing, accompanied by a dull thumping. "Geez! Is he beating his wife?!" Without further hesitation, Oniver rapped heavily on the door.

The Goblin smiled back at his partner in crime "I think the undead and the blood mists might have something in common or it could have been the foul smell of the dead one" he sniffs his own armpit satisfied that his natural fragrance doesn't make his own eyes bleed Still might be getting close to dunking time

"Hard to say if they were brothers but Egen was old so we should ask someone else old. Place this small and everyone knows everyones business, aint that so Phol"

Hemdan is relieved to be able to drop Stahl off at the patio Heavier than he looks and waits to see who answers the door. He gives his new gifts a reassuring pat and is looking forward to sharing the sneaky success of Hemdan and Oni with the rest of the group, somewhere more private though

The half-elf nodded at Oniver's suggestion, "Hmmmm," the backwoods half-elf mused on Hemdan's question, lips pursed in thought. After only a moment he shook his head, "No, I don't think I will. The names of Egen nor Ephes will not pass my lips again less I hear others of this village speak of them first. Would not wish any accusations to be levied, I says."

Though he seemed to have put the matter behind him, there might have been the slightest of shudders as he spoke of the ghost and the dead man. Regardless he waited silently now for the silver tongued Oniver to inquire of the baker and his wife.

Just BakingThe thudding sound abruptly ceased from within, as Oniver gave the door a good knocking. An elderly woman's voice could be heard then as footsteps approached the door.

"At this hour? I'm all out. Who could this be?"

With a loud creak, the timber door then opened to reveal a lady of gently aged features, who was wearing a smock covered by an apron which was spattered with a light dusting of flour. Though she regarded the strange folks at her door with a smile, it was pretty clear that she'd been teary recently. Her eyes were quite bloodshot, and he remnants of tears were clear on her rosy cheeks.

Oniver Stramont
right-aligned image

At the first sound of the approaching woman, Oniver stepped back from the door and waited for it to open, that damnable smile already stretched across his face. He bowed as she opened the door, trying covertly to peek around her for any sight of the abusive scoundrel, but the sight of her dusty apron put two-and-two together. "Good evening, ma'am," the peddler began, and the large pack on his back surely gave him the apparance of door-to-door salesman. He begrudged the decision not to leave it at the inn only briefly as he straightened. "Name's Oniver Stramont, and these are my traveling companions. Do not let appearances fool you; they are just and honorable men. Ho ho, you are correct! We are indeed strangers in your village, having left our own when the blood mist lifted. We have secured lodging at the Knave and Chariot, where Miss Bethe informed us that some children had recently gone missing." At this moment, Oniver's smile shifted to a somber frown and his voice was filled with pathos. "Well, let me say, dear lady, our hearts broke horribly to hear such news. We demanded to know more! Indeed, noble Sir Stahl here leapt from his chair with such fervor that he bruised his ankle upon the table leg. Yet even that did not prevent him from coming here to set right this wrong.

"And so we intrude upon your peace at this hour, not to purchase a loaf of bread, no, but to ask for but a few minutes of your time so we help find your missing, uhm... daughter."
The toothy smile was back as Oniver waited placidly for the baker's response.

Stahl Hearthson

Hemdan helps Stahl up the stairs - typically a goblin helping a grown man up steps wouldn't amount to much, but Stahl was sprained and tired enough for the assistance to count. Stahl regains a little of his composure and looks around, just in time to see Egan's head burst open. Well, no more reason to risk our lives here then. Damn the carvings, or whatever it was Egan really wanted. Stahl continues onward, hauling himself out of the darkness of the basement and then out of the workshop altogether.

Oniver seems unsettled. Is Egan the first man he's seen to die? "Really not that different to seeing animals die," Stahl offers. "Only difference between us and a beast is that we see it comin' ... sometimes." He straightens as the goblin remarks on heading to the bakery. "Yes, I'll keep." Hemdan continues to help him along, and he's not so proud as to argue. Oniver and Hemdan are discussing what just happened underground, and Stahl is at a loss on how to add to the ordeal. He'd been ready to leave Egan behind or even kill the old fool himself before the fatal blow. Those carvings might be lost forever in the building blaze - would they have been worth it? "All it tells me is this town, something about this place, is just ... mired in rotten. That halfling vanished on us, there's vengeful dead in the larders, and no one talks straight here 'less you squeeze for it. Say what you want about Kiersap, at least it wasn't this. I don't like it here."

Stahl slumps on the baker's patio where Hemdan finally takes his leave. A woman comes out to greet them in response to Oniver's knocking. "We've already eaten," he grumbles in response to the woman's mention of bread. "We're travellers, interested in local events." He shuts up as Oniver launches into his spiel, then groans audibly as he realises the damn parasite is using him as a prop now. "Like I said, interested in local events. Leave it to Oniver here to make a bloody sonnet out of it. But sure, we want to help."

OOCJust RP'ing my way up to the current moment.

The dour half-elf stood back as the conversation with the baker commenced, only offering an approving grunt at Stahl's apt description of Oniver's methods of parley. His arms folded, at the edge of the group, he waited to see what would become of this meeting.

Would the woman trust a motley group showing up on her doorstep in the early night? He would not, no, no he would not. But if any could convince her Phol silently agreed with himself that Oniver was the one to do it.

He liked to think he always had something useful to say and do but between Phols guidance to keep quiet about the fire and Oniver's way with words he decided to say nothing.

He did look around, but in every direction except the "hut" wondering if anyone had noticed and was heading over that way. "We can talk inside if you wish talk in privacy?" he finally adds Least seen, Least blamed
