![]() Skurvin had had little interest in this diversion, and now it was escalating needlessly. He very much doubted this person's maps were worth anything, but any information she could provide might be useful. Of course she would likely not be in a mind to share it if they attacked her. Stepping foreword and speaking up in an attempt to diffuse the situation, Skurvin says, "I apologize for my overzealous companion. There is no need for defensive posturing or idle threats from any of us. I'm sure no one will benefit from a conflict." He smiles Dice diplomacy:

The woman paused for a moment, seemingly considering whether she should continue to peddle her maps or take another action. Finally she said, "The maps cost 20 gold each. No looking at them until I am paid in full. The dungeon changes often, but several locations stay the same or change very rarely."

Skurvin smiled and nodded his head appreciatively, pleased that things were going in the right direction now. The smile also helped hide his amusement at the absurd price for such a con, but she did give one interesting bit of information. Several rooms stayed put or rarely moved. That was very interesting.
As he waits for his new friends to decide on their purchase, Skurvin passes the time with conversation in an attempt to coax more information out of the woman. "Thank you," he says, taking a step closing while making no threatening gestures. "Tell me, how on earth do you keep your maps up to date if the dungeon changes? Are they magical, or do you have someone constantly going out to check for you?"

As Skurvin took another step forward, he stepped into the room with the pillars. Suddenly, the light on the tip of his crossbow winked out and, to his horror, Kria vanished behind him.

Jasen noted the anti-magic field with interest, but he said nothing about it. Instead, after continuing to look at Errya's face intently and deciding she wasn't a woman to be haggled with, he pulled exactly twenty gold pieces out of his pocket. "Information could mean the difference between life and death down here," he mused, offering her the money. "We'll take your map."

Errya glared after Madantya, but nodded and smiled to Jasen when he offered his gold. She handed one of her bodyguards a scroll and he began to walk into the room, exchanging it for the gold and making his way back to the stairs, where Errya and her other bodyguard were already beginning to turn to go. As he opened the scroll, he found it blank.

Valtyra peered over Jasen's shoulder. "Maybe its a magic map? That lights up when you get near something it recognizes?" She asked hopefully. She knew little about maps, magic or otherwise, but had a sinking suspicion they weren't usually blank or this expensive. She hoped Jasen wasn't going to be mad at her if it turned out he'd wasted all that money.

Jasen unrolled the scroll. He knew that being cheated was a possibility, but he had chosen to trust, and now...
When Valtyra suggested it was a magic map, he blinked. "If it's a magic map, it won't work in this room," he said. "Errya," he called. "Why is this scroll blank?" Jasen took a step backwards, out of the room of pillars, to see whether the map started working. But if Errya turned out to be a crook... Jasen had been betrayed enough by crooks in his own family. He had little patience for cons.

When Jasen looked up, it was to see Errya ignoring him as she turned to leave, her bodyguards going with her.

As Jasen backed out of the room, Valtyra followed. She did not like the feeling of not being able to access her magic. She had never particularly cared for it before, but now that she couldn't use it, her skin felt all crawly and weird.

Skurvin had said nothing during the exchange. In fact his silence had almost been conspicuous. He had stared for a long moment at the spot where Kria had vanished. Without his magic or his protector, he had felt very small and very vulnerable.
despite the growing dread and sense of panic in his stomach, he had put on an air of calm, pretending it hadn't bothered him. Running away would have only shown weakness and encouraged an attack by any who might mean him harm. Once their business was concluded, he gave a short bow of his head before walking away, trying not to be in too big a hurry to exit the anti-magic field.

OOC: Did anything appear on the scroll when Jasen exited the anti-magic field?

The scroll remained blank as Jasen exited the room, but Skurvin was relieved to find that as he left the room, the light reappeared on his crossbow and Kria snapped back into the hallway.
((I'm assuming you all returned to the hallway you entered from.)) |
