What I decided to do was roll a CMD with bonuses due to ship size/strength, spell level and sailor profession level. My result was less than 5 (28) below yours, which I gauged as a glancing hit. I realise usually a sucessful CMB bullrush means you are hit, but I think with the type of combat we're talking about here it makes sense. Feel free to grumble though.

Oh and I promise those characters with better movement capabilities (flying or a powerful mount) won't always be front and center for attention. But in the current situation their skills and abilities were especially useful.
