Fair point! I started with Red Box when I was much younger and really didn't find it cumbersome, but I was predisposed to play and a total fantasy nerd at that point, so I might have let my imagination fill in the details I couldn't bother learning. Rose-coloured glasses and all that!

The OP did mention experience with Pathfinder and D&D 3.5e, though. I still think Pathfinder/D&D 3.5e to D&D 5e would be a smoother/easier transition than something completely new, even if the person only dabbled before.
