The Forgotten Academy

Game NameThe Forgotten Academy
Game SystemStar Wars RPG
ThemeYoung players growing older and more powerful in a Sith Academy. Probably a fair bit of survival, but we'll see.
FlavourDark and Gritty most likely.
Plot SummaryIt feels heavy here, it's not just the mugginess of the air; it feels similar but it weighs on your mind not your body in a way that seems impossible to describe. It feels suffocating, like a massive burden perpetually locked on your back. He promises you that you'll one day love this feeling.

Maybe you were recruited by a shadowy figure at the point of a blade, or maybe you were bought like a slave, or just maybe you somehow caught wind of this place and wanted to come. Either way you're here now, and there's nothing you can do about it. Students try to escape sometimes, the younger ones in particular, but it never happens; and the punishments are very ugly. That's assuming they're caught by an instructor and not some of the local wildlife.

They keep telling you that you're lucky. That not only were you born with a gift, you were found by people who could help you unlock it. Wield it to it's greatest potential. That's what they're doing with all the beatings, the threats, the tests; helping you.

Remaking you into something extraordinary, a Sith.

Okay so a long time ago I saw an ad for a sith academy, I didn't get in but the idea sounded awesome. In light of that I finally think I have time to start my own academy of darkness. Unless everyone wants something different you'll be playing students in the 10-14 range; whether you're new or not to the academy is up to you. This academy is not in any way affiliated with the empire, any races you want are fair game as long as they can be force sensitive.

Fair warning I have old, old books only. I need to dig up an old laptop to look through the pdfs because I don't remember exactly which edition it is. I do have something called The Dark Side Sourcebook, but the other then that it's just the core rulebook. I am willing to use more recent editions if anyone knows where to get a free source doc or a very cheap pdf. Also fair warning I don't have a ton of experience being a game master in pbp, I've run two games though that were met with limited success.

This is gonna take place ten-15 years before battle of yavin, empire has taken power and there's very little resistance. I will say right now on the off chance the campaign gets this far, I DO NOT CARE ABOUT CANNON. If somehow everyone become powerful sith lords and they pull off a devious plan that kills palpatine it'll work.

Posting RateFairly relaxed. One good post from me a week at most, probably a couple more small ones if people need responses to questions or something.

Number of playersI'm planning on taking six people with the assumption a couple will drop early, as seems to be a trend here.

Application formatIf you want to make an app go ahead, if I get more then six people with interest I guess I'll need them to decide.

Name
Age
Race
Appearance
Background
RP Sample(optional)

TimelineI'm gonna try to keep this as vague as I can but I feel like this might be useful for you creating your apps. Deciding how long your character have been around and such.

25 years prior: The current master settled down on a planet powerful in the dark side where he could train while staying hidden. He had a single force sensitive child with him, this child is now one of the instructors.

15-13 years prior: three students were happened upon by the master while off planet during this time frame. He took each of them because they were found to be very force sensitive. Two of them are now instructors while one is the oldest of the students, probably the most powerful as well.

10 years prior: The first real batch of students is brought in, about a dozen young children all carefully handpicked because of force sensitivity over a long time frame.

5 years prior: More students of various ages are found. and brought into the fold. Another dozen or so, they were slightly older then the first batch.

1 year prior: Another dozen, most of which were in the 10-14 range.

And very recently:
A batch of twenty is brought in, almost entirely young children in the 6-10 range.

Interesting game. Never played or owned the system though and don't know if I have time to dedicate myself to learning new set of rules.

Those are the books, yep, thanks for making that clear for everyone. It's also probably worth mentioning people can use sourcebooks they'll just have to walk me through everything stats/rules wise.

Ok a few questions for you then....

At what time period is this game set?
Do all characters need to be force sensitive?
Do you want the characters to be embracing the darkside or resisting it or is that up to the players?

I'm in. Loved playing the rpg when I had a group. Would you like fleshed out apps? Or just looking for interest? All the books I have pdfs for are from the saga edition however. Released around the 2007 timeframe. I'll see if I can find the older ones.

In order
-30 years before the battle of yavin, empire is just taking form and resistance is just starting out. This academy is in no way affiliated with palpatine or the empire.
-you probably should be but I'm open to ideas if you want to do something else that sounds cool. Teachers included this academy is only like, 30-50 people right now so there isn't a huge servant force or anything.
-up to you! Keep in mind though kids are impressionable and literately every authority figure and almost all peers are telling you it's great.

I figured with all the stipulations and using an old edition I wouldn't need people to make apps. Chances are I'll just accept everyone who want to play, if I get more interest then I expect I'll put a template up.

Here's my application:

Player ApplicationsName: Savak
Age: 13
Race: Ubese
Appearance: Without her armor, Savak is a typical Ubese: thin, almost to the point of appearing fragile. Her eyes are deep-set, cold blue, and she tends to use the Ubese facial makeup style that outlines the entire eye on black and traces it along the long, lean face. Save rarely removes her mask, however, a modified version of the Ubese armor helmet that favors an integrated visor, rather than the full panoramic suite most Ubese mercenaries use. Favoring light armor over heavier plating, Savak is experimenting with integrating modular plating and equipment pouches into the sith uniforms of the academy. When her face is uncovered, Savak avoids speaking or acting, preferring to observe and take careful action. Once masked, her entire body language changes, and she grows intense, decisive, and violent.

Background: Savak is yrek pootzek, born in exile and trained early in the history of her culture. As a child, her parents shared with her the stories of the Republic's destruction of her family's homeworld, and their failed attempt to cover up the atrocities they inflicted on the Ubese people. Savak's father was a smuggler who ran supplies along the Outer Rim. His mother arranged the contracts, ensuring their jobs would have the greatest impact on the corrupt, self-righteous Republic. They called themselves the Dhurghaz, after the coastal predator that waited in deceptive shallows to snatch up the unwary.

During the wars, the Dhurghaz allied themselves with the separatists. And Savak knelt at the feet of Dooku, who promised to train her to control the powerful rages that began to overwhelm her. She became a fledgling Dark Acolyte.

It was not the Republic who killed the Dhurghaz. While Savak was learning basic meditation and Dooku's brand of the Sith Code, Savak's father took on a load of ammunition. Unknown to him, they were marked by pirates, who wished to take not just a single load, but the accumulated credits that the family Dhurghaz were reputed to hold in an asteroid vault.

The pirates shadowed her father, waited until he docked at Nar Shadaa to make his deal, and then took the pair after the exchange. Savak received a stuttering message from her mother, sent out over their private channel.

Dooku, a collector of ancient and beautiful artifacts, had a number of spacecraft in his retreat on the Space Station Trenchant. Savak selected an ancient craft, an Aurek fighter with a moderately functional hyperdrive, and fled, tracing the com signal from her mother back to their asteroid hideout. There she found the pirate crew and their captain raiding the credit holds and goods of the site.

Savak drew her rage in, and used the darkness inside her to augment her awareness. She fired cannons of her stolen fighter until they shorted out, and then she rammed the pirate craft with her own, bringing it down on the remaining survivors. She had only enough time to eject herself in an escape pod before her own ship was destroyed.

In the darkness of space, with an emergency beacon repeating her SOS, she meditated. She drew in her darkness, pooled it, and went through the mental forms. She felt every bolt in the the fragile, ancient pod around her. She imagined she could feel the brush of space dust against it's hull.

And when the tractor beam grabbed the pod, she was certain she felt that, too.

Savak lead her rescuers back to Dhurghaz Rock, and helped them to salvage what could be sold. She gave them the largest portion, keeping for herself only a suit of Environmental Armor painted in family colors, a DH-17 short carbine, and a few credit sticks. The haul's value ensured her safety, as they hauled her to Stend, the nearest port. For a time Savak hid among the swoop bikers in The Pits, and nursed her wounds.

A month later Savak heard about Dooku's fall. The Emperor was searching the galaxy for force users. And he would never accept Savak as a pupil. That much was understood by all Dooku's Dark Acolytes.

Savak, though, needed a teacher. And she needed to learn to control the roiling darkness within her.

There were whispers. And when she concentrated on them, there were echoes. She interrogated people, worked transport on ships, and in the Bajic shipyards, among the organized crime mobs, Savak found a nautolan technician who knew something. After a night of torture he gave up coordinates to a strange satellite in near orbit. Savak then stole a close-range tug, over-rode it's limiters, and flew to the satellite.

On board was an invitation. An invitation left for a resourceful entity like Savak. A one-way pod, and the promise of a new life. Savak merely had to embrace it.

Savak seized the opportunity.

Current goals: Savak is desperate to control her inner rage. She has learned to subsume it when unmasked. She thinks of herself almost as two beings. When she is unmasked she is Savak the Lost. She appears weak, distractable, and when the rages come upon her, she cannot control them. She has been known to awake from sleep in full rage, and to leap upon an innocent sleeping in an adjacent bed, her hands at their throat. She has also been known to bite through her own lips and to draw blood from her clenched fists during these states. Dooku claimed they were passions brought on from a warp in her connection to the force, but he never explained them to Savak.

Under Dooku's training, which was rudimentary, considering her age, she trained with a modified version of a full environment suit mask. All of her discipline and training was done while wearing the mask. With any mask on, she thinks of herself as Savak the Dhurghaz,

As Savak the Dhurghaz, she is decisive and self-controlled. She rages, but with meditation she can contain it. She was given only basic lessons with weaponry, mostly hand to hand and knife skills, and she currently favors her DH-17 in a fight. Her current suit of environment armor has been modified to fit her needs, and she will adapt any new uniform she is given to include the light plating and the mask that she feels is necessary.

Savak needs to become strong. She needs to control her rages. If possible, she needs to learn what this warped connection is, and whether she can fix it or take advantage of its nature. She harbors great resentment against Palpatine, both because of his species prejudice (revealed to her through Dooku) and because of his rejection of any other apprentices. She also bears general enmity against the corrupt arms of the Republic. She bears her hatred of their hypocrisy, and wishes to see it's remnants fall. In this, the Empire is her ally. If they show a strong hand against the pirates as well, Savak might well support their aims.

Savak craves belonging, identity, and something to replace the family she lost. The Sith might well be everything she could hope for.

I'm interested. I think I have that core rule book that Alatere posted a picture of floating around my house somewhere. I'll see if I can dig that up.

Is the intention that the academy be disconnected from all the goings on in the rest of the galaxy?

I'm definitely in, I LOVE the lore surrounding the Sith academies. The opportunity to play up a young lad in the academy I would be ecstatic.
