[D&D-5e] The Wild Beyond the Witchlight

OK, the Ranger with no sense of direction idea is so fun I'm just going to jump on it now. Is the Celebrity Adventurer's Scion background from Acquisitions, Inc. allowable? If not the noble background is a simple enough substitute. Picture will come once I find a suitably nonbinary looking Elf.

WIP Name: Legobric Race: Wood Elf Class: Ranger Alignment: Chaotic Good Lost Thing: Sense of direction Minor curse: Legobric is completely incapable of wearing rings. No matter how hard they try, whenever they attempt to put one on, it just slips past their finger. Background: Born into the royal family of a small Elvish kingdom hidden away in the Or a comparable location, if the starting world isn't FaerunHigh Forest, Legobric's father was a legendary hero of the entire sword coast, known for his skill both with the bow and as a woodsman. Legobric, as the eldest child, was expected to carry on this proud tradition, and they certainly inherited their dad's love of adventure. Unfortunately, it was this very boldness which ruined any chance of Legobric taking up the mantle of heroism. As a mere child of sixty-four years old, having heard that the famed Witchlight Carnival had arrived near Silverymoon, Legobric absconded from their peaceful woodland domain. Alongside their best friend Quandael, Legobric used their burgeoning skills to sneak into the Carnival unseen - or so they thought. Legobric's father was simultaneously furious, and quietly impressed. Nonetheless, he despatched a contingent of guards to find the pair and escort them home. Once returned to the forest, Legobric received the rollicking of a lifetime, and from that day forward until they came of age, the young noble was watched like a hawk by the rest of their family. Of course, no Elf could remain in the friendly confines of their home village forever. Some forty years later, Legobric reached the age of majority. Accordingly, they took off into the deep woods, aiming to return with the head of a particular breed of deer common to the area- the traditional sign that an Elf were capable of being considered an adult. Now, seventy-two years on, Legobric has roamed all over the land, from the Cloakwood to Neverwinter Wood. They have slain many, many deer, and far more fearsome beasts besides. Yet not once have they sighted the specific type of deer needed to prove themselves an adult. Nor have they been able to return home, despite decades spent in the effort. Though Legobric never truly gave up, all hope had left them a long time ago, the Elf having made their peace with viewing themself as some kind of tragicomic figure. Then, one evening, whilst hunting for their night's meal, the outline of a familiar big top appeared on the horizon...

A fey prince who forgot he's a prince and gets lost in the mortal realm; sounds like the dude has had quite an experience. His curse of falling in love seems to fit the 'rogue' class. I look forward to seeing how he managed to get into this odd predicament.

I see no problems with your choice of lost thing and curse. I feel like pointing out it looks like one of the perks for having "Pallid Elf" is the ability to cast "sleep" at 3rd level and we will be going to the Feywild where that might not be the most useful. I'm not saying it's a poor choice, just making sure that was a consideration that you were aware of

I like that the one who broke the rules as a kid became the one who strictly follows them later. I wonder how that will affect his outlook on life if he gets his sense of humor back.

I'm confused about how no one ever bothered to ask her where her twin brother was. I know if I took a sibling to a fair and returned without him there would have been some serious questions when I got home. Children do get lost in the Feywild though so it's not an awful idea. Might I suggest she lost her brother but not the memory? Your call.

Why did you give yourself disadvantage on Insight and Performance? I get how Tone Deaf would affect your performance abilities but what was the logic behind tying it to Insight?

I liked your app. The name and the bit about going out to prove himself and never coming home really made me giggle. My first thought was that your Lost Thing was too small and your Curse was too small but if I use math that sounds like it balances out. Plus, I seem to recall saying that the curse was optional so who cares if it's "Too small." Anywho, looks good.

Lost Thing: Vinry has lost his sense of taste.

Minor Curse: Vinry can't open a door without knocking on it first.

Background: It was probably 16 years ago when Vinry was lost in the Feywild; 8 seems too few and 24 too many. Hard to say for sure, though. The passage of time was funny there. On his 13th birthday, Vinry's parents gifted him a ticket to the Witchlight Carnival, the best gift he's ever gotten. Eventually he spent the last of his coins, but when he saw what was at the bottom of the wishing well he got an idea. Vinry reached in the wishing well to grab a few extra coins for games and snacks, but he fell in and was transported to the Feywild. There, on the brink of death, he was saved by the archfey Hyrsam. Hyrsam gifted Vinry with some magic and sent him back to the material plane to show off his new gift.

Wow. That it a large photo of a Halfling.

I had to look up Hyrsam because I honestly don’t know a lot of the typical DnD lore. However, since his main goal is to make the Feywild return to it’s “According to the Forgotten Realms Wikipristine condition” it makes sense he would send Vinry back to the carnival so he could act as an agent on his behalf and get rid of the … whatever it is you lot will end up doing in the Feywild.

Is it strange I think that it’s sad that the best present he has ever gotten was a ticket to a place that led him to a realm he got lost and nearly died in? Especially when magic powers of an Archfey and a return trip are the other obvious options? Lol. No need to change that part, it just made me sad for poor little Vinry

Good heavens, Qik, you've chosen quite the game to get started DMing on site!

Posting tentative interest, Should know by the 15th of April at the worst, after I've done all my Hall of Fame poll-creation duties. (Okay, maybe the 16th, realistically. ) But that's definitely an outside estimate.depending on how a few things go this week and next. As long as the deadline doesn't move up, I should be fine.

@Snicker + @Qiksilv - I've played a mute character, and she was absolutely one of my favorites ever (not just the *mumble* years I've been on site, but ever ever). It's hilarious and fun, if you have someone else in the group who knows sign language or knows the character well enough to translate charades decently. In a game with such variance, the loss of Common might be easier to RP, but all that depends on how you want the character to come across.

Heh, I'd prop you up if you needed it, but no, I'm no wiz DM to be able to do that at a moment's notice. I'm one of those people who makes lists of her lists.

And no, I haven't played it before, but it's linked to the Feywild, and you allowed all published material. You're going to get inundated with 5e niche builds that never made it into other games because they were too "out there", as well as tons of creative people since the game idea (as posted at least) is so open-ended.

I’d like to make lists of my list but every time I try I get lost with my own work so I do a little less of that now. Though, I will likely try gan now since I think that will benefit DMing onsite more than IRL. Maybe.

Dirk made a 3.5 arena thread once and I’m pretty sure that w it so he could try unusual things. I recall a fire breating fairy and someone who won by making her enemies so docile they quit. I’ll likely allow crazing things just because I don’t know any better (though I’m sure I’ll have an idea of what to look out for after running this for a while ). If something ends up being too crazy then we’ll reexamine te policy and adjust accordingly.

Yup. I posted what my “ideal” application should include so a long as you provide that minimum information you will have a complete app. I currently have the selection date pretty far out (end-ish of April) which gives time for people with busy schedules (including me) a chance to think and write what they want. Until then hang out, try to get in another game if you have the time/interest, and have fun

Posting Potential Interest. Still trying to figure out my character.

Initial idea, is a character (Tabaxi?) that is constantly full of static electricity that shocks himself and whatever he touches (minor curse).

Application Name: Sparky Race:Tabaxi Class: Cleric (Tempest) Alignment:CG Lost Thing: His Marbles Minor Curse: Always charged with Static and shocks himself and those that touch him. Background: "But Sparky’s a big kit now! He wants to go to the festival too." A tiny little kit called out to his siblings. "We’ve already been over this Sparky, you are too young right now to go, maybe next time it comes to town." was the reply that he had heard for the umpteenth time since he found out about the Festival. Sparky was determined to go to the Festival after all he was not a kitten anymore he was a grown up. He waited till his siblings started out when he started to try and follow them, but soon got lost in the woods along the trail. Just as he started to cry out for being lost, he heard a voice beckon to him from the shadows. "The Festival is this way, just follow my voice, little one." Sparky started to follow the voice leading him through the woods. Just as he started to get worried about being lost again, he looked up to find the Carnival standing before him. The bright lights and carnival music beckoned to the young little kit. Finding a small entrance away from the bright lights, Sparky snuck in and spent the night enjoying the festivities. "I think your night is over little one." Mr. Witch said, coming up to the kit. "If you remember one thing from tonight, nothing comes free and debts will be paid." With that Mr. Witch snapped his fingers and a bright light hit Sparky and he woke up in the morning in his bed. When he awoke he barely remembered the voice or the festival, but everything he seemed to touch shocked him, and his fur was always slightly puffed. He was viewed as an outsider from the village he lived in as he grew up. He spent his childhood alone and ignored by the other kids his age, due to his eccentricities. As the years passed the voice he heard as a child started to grow louder and began to train him in how to harness the powers that he had been gifted. Sixteen years after the event and 4 years after he had left home Sparky dreamt about a place long forgotten and a shadowy figure appearing to him saying… "It is time to return and pay your debts." With that Sparky woke up and started his trek to his newest adventure.

When she got back home her mom, das and brothors were going somewhere and so she was by herself at home with her uncle named valden taught her magic for when she was ready she went to the magic acadamy to protect her town. When the carival opened she wantwd to find her lost thing.

I was thinking there could be two ways of taking it and I wasn't sure which way I liked best...

First: The "spell effect" was more far-reaching than just her... and it was more like her brother was erased from everyone's collective minds
Second: People constantly ask her about her Brother, but she has no idea what they're talking about... and after several tough conversations it was simply dropped

She *could* remember her brother, but then the question becomes "why did she wait so long to try and get him back" (16 years) Also, I was thinking that the word she kept hearing in her dream "Balovar" could be the name of her missing Brother... which the fortune teller may or may not reveal to her

Tone Deaf actually has two definitions, so I gave myself the penalty for both of them.

Tone Deaf:

1: Relatively insensitive to differences in musical pitch: So this is where the musical ability comes in, as you mentioned. But taking it one step further, means that Saorise can't hear the inflections of other people's voices. She can not perceive if they're being sarcastic, questioning, et cetera...

2: Having or showing an obtuse insensitivity or lack of perception particularly in matters of public sentiment, opinion, or taste: Since she is bad at reading people's vocal cues, it seemed to fit in with "a lack of perception" for her social interactions which I think is what insight is for?
