Um, the Headband of Vast Intelligence confuses me... how do the extra skill ranks work? Are they the same as if you'd taken ranks in it yourself, or are they actually a misc. bonus? What's worse is that I'm trying to get one for Linguistics. Do I get to use the skill if I have the headband, even if I myself never put ranks in it? Do I get bonus languages from the headband's bonus ranks?
On an unrelated note, Ultimate Magic is awesome.

Magical items won't affect skill ranks but items rising it permanently (like the tomes that give inherit bonuses) do. You also do not gain retroactively skill ranks when your int rises. Despite all that, dm can have a house rule to allow that

Um, perhaps I should quote the headband's description, because that simply does not answer my questions.

Quote:
This intricate gold headband is decorated with several small blue and deep purple gemstones. The headband grants the wearer an enhancement bonus to Intelligence of +2, +4, or +6. Treat this as a temporary ability bonus for the first 24 hours the headband is worn. A headband of vast intelligence has one skill associated with it per +2 bonus it grants. After being worn for 24 hours, the headband grants a number of skill ranks in those skills equal to the wearer's total Hit Dice. These ranks do not stack with the ranks a creature already possesses. These skills are chosen when the headband is created. If no skill is listed, the headband is assumed to grant skill ranks in randomly determined Knowledge skills.
I am asking how those ranks work.

It looks like the headband actually confers skill ranks into 1,2, or 3 skills that are associated with the headband. HOWEVER, if you already have ranks in a skill, you take the highest of the two values, ie. you have a headband that is associated with acrobatics, you're level 9, and you already have three ranks in the skill. The value offered by the headband is greater, so you would instead be given the value from the headband. This item appears to have given you "free" skill ranks in any of these given skills without you spending points. So linguistics being a trained only skill looks like will be treated as if trained with skill ranks equal to your hit dice. good find

-------Edit:
On a related note, i find it amusing that if the headband is used for linguistics, don't you think it would only offer a languages that only the creator might have known? i mean magic items are cool and all, but to put on a headband and suddenly you can speak all the languages you wish you knew, even to the dismay and confusion of the creator, seems a bit awkward to me :P

It went really well. I'm actually about to head out, because we didn't wrap up last night so we're finishing tonight. Then, in two weeks I'll be running a dungeon I made myself.

Thank you for asking.

Glad everything went well with the first run... let us know how your dungeon works out! (as alas, my memory does not stretch two weeks, especially not in the summer)

I feel like now that I have a grip on how my players work together, I can tailor it to them a bit. I was actually supposed to run that dungeon two days ago, but now I'm glad I have more time to tweak it. :3

that's so cool... i really miss my rl D&D sessions... all night long me and a friend were always responsible for making hot sandwiches, so we secretly put all kind of stuff we found in the fridge in those!

I haven't had real life D&D in a regular group since early fall in 2010. I play with my siblings and best friend, but only once in a blue moon.
