Welcome to Dufield!
Dufield was a moderately large city. Nothing like the opulence of Tharean cities, yet also leagues above most construction in Yolpa. It was still early morning, and as such the street was quiet. Down the road a sign displaying a bundle of grapes hung above the door to an inn, and not far away a wooden bulletin board stood, it's face mostly bare. The only company these adventurers had, at the moment, were a few tired guards standing nearby, guarding the road. |

Oticle ponders the situation. "At least it looks big enough that I will be able to hide in crowds, assuming we gnomes aren't a circus attraction. Taking over a town, where do we start? Base of operations, make ourselves useful, rake in the cash, sounds like a plan she thinks.
"So you two, can either of you read that noticeboard or shall we just find a place so stay in that Inn. I could do with a hot meal after that journey and a safe bed would be even better. Some rules though, I'll not be doing the bargaining, I'll pay my own room and I'm not sharing with either of you. Though feel free to treat my like I'm just a useless hanger-on and I'll go along with it. She looks at her new companions, hoping they'll do the job of introducing to the town, keeping attention from her, then seems to find the fastenings on her pack immensely interesting. |

"Let's just take a room at the inn. Things seem very quiet here."
Higgins heads to the inn to rent a room. |

The tall youth looks around the town and his two companions from the blind Crows. At Oticle's question, Elias looks toward the wooden bulletin board and says, "I agree with Higgins, let's get a room at that Inn and I while walk over and look at the bulletin. We will probably get all the information we need from the Inn keeper or his bartender."

As Higgins and Oticle walk towards the Inn, Elias moves to the bulletin board. Close up, it's actually even more bare than it had seemed from far away, most of it only has old nails and the tattered remains of paper stuck to it. There are only two fliers left on it. One is plain paper with neat handwriting reading, "To all citizens of Dufield: all posters, notations, and other notices to be put on this official bulletin board must bear the same stamp as the one here. You may have your papers stamped and approved by visiting the office of Inquisitor Lexington Fortrite." In the bottom right of the paper is an official stamp that bears the royal crest of Desea.
The other notice is written on fine parchments, the text moves with a grace and style only seen from professional calligraphist. "WANTED: Alive. Jan Underhill. Crimes: Burglery, Theft, Possession of Official Documents, Resisting Lawful Arrest. Reward: Fifty gold pieces. The picture displayed is of a young halfling woman. - As the door shuts behind them, Oticle and Higgins are met with a poorly written but warm room. The inn's dining room is empty of people, and the air is quiet and still. Only a barkeeper is there, sitting board behind the bar with a large book in front of him. He scratches his long black beard, but doesn't seem to notice the new arrivals. |

"How much is it to rent a room for the night?"

While Higgins concentrates on the innkeeper, Oticle turns her attention to the rest of the bar. Empty now but maybe a source of clues for the curious.
She checks out the seating, seeing whether it is all human sized or whether a good proportion looks like it would fit a gnome, dwarf or halfling. She also scans for any bottles or barrels with what look like non-human writing on them. Noticing no other occupants she breathes a sigh of relief, "The innkeeper should be a good source of information and should be used to strangers, so this is a good opportunity to ask a few questions without it drawing too much attention." she thinks. Once the Innkeeper and Higgins have finished their business, Oticle prepares a few questions, remembering what could go wrong for a traveller in her homeland she errs on the side of caution. "We're new round here and don't want to get into trouble, is there anything we should know? Any parts of town to steer clear of or customs we should follow? Do we need to register as foreigners, have our weapons listed or pay any special taxes? And while we're here, are there any places you'd think we should see - gilded palaces, singing statues, mighty waterfalls or that sort of thing?" |

Elias examines the parchment about the halfling and cannot find an official seal. "Beautifully written but not official?....seems odd"
He turns and enters the Inn and walks over to Higgens and Oticle. "Well, the place looks packed, hope they have room for us." He says jokingly. To Higgins he says,"Nothing on the board but an unofficial posting for a 50 gold reward for a halfling woman, she sounds like a thief. "

The innkeeper scratches his head. "All we got now are single bed rooms. 5 silver a night." He then turns with a raised eyebrow to Oticle. "Dufield is fairly normal, ma'am. Don't got much of any of those things."

"That sounds like a good idea. I should rent a room."
Higgins slides some money to the barkeeper. |

Oticle agrees with Higgins that this is a decent price, but she's willing to try for more discount,
"I'll take a room too - though if you have any way it could be cheaper for some odd jobs, that would suit me better and I could take it for a week. Nothing too odd though..." |
