i'm pretty used to it even on other boards - rarely get a high roll; just makes it more challenging interesting

Have you ever played a 3d6 game instead of d20? Pretty interesting. it also pushes the modifiers a LOT more than a d20 does. I'll provide the rules if you're interested. Wouldn't change this game without 100% agreement, but.. it is an interesting game.
Rules for the "Bell Curve" alternative posted. As I said, we will NOT be using these unless EVERYONE wants to. I have used it in a game, it's interesting. I even kept track of the rolls, they did indeed form a bell curve.

I'd like to try it. There are a few diffs between the d20 rules that text quotes and the Pathfinder rules...
- Pathfinder doesn't have automatic failures or successes. If you roll a 1 and still pass the DC, you succeed. Will we use the PF rules or these rules? - They mention the Luck domain for rerolls (you get to roll twice and take the best). Will we use those for all such cases? For example, Improved Great Fortitude lets you roll two Fort saves (once per day). Also, there are some cases where you have to roll twice up front, some where you can roll after your initial result but must take the new roll, and some where you can roll after the result and can take either. I assume we'd use these rules for all these cases? - The crit range rules might be different. Those won't affect my Sorceress, but they could affect others, so they'd better be clear before being adopted.

Well, I have always agreed that beating the DC is what is important in a skill check. a "20" is not a guarantee of success if the DC is higher, and so a '1' is not a guarantee of failure if the DC is low enough that any roll will pass. SO that wouldn't change with a 3d6 system.
Rerolls are usually handled by the rules of their own circumstance. So a reroll might NOT give the4d6, if there was no 'advantage' like luck to get ahigher roll. So no, not always would the 4d6 drop the lower part be used, but rerolls when called for in skills and feats would be done as always, just not wit hthe 'extra'. Only the LUCK domain would call for the extra die, that's the 'luck' part. Crit range? I wasn't aware RANGES were affected by crits. Explain?

Re: lethal vs. non-lethal, in many previous games it was always lethal unless you specified otherwise. Of course, nonlethal with a staff or most other weapons give you a -4 on your attack.

Crit range is what you need to have a critical threat, i.e. 20 normally, 19-20 with a sword, 18-20 with a rapier. Modified by certain feats or magic effect.
Called 'Threat Range' in the article.

You're fighting farmers here, not thugs. They LIVE in this city, you're all the visitors. I might add, although it somewhat 'giving away' part of how this all works, you all have a "Trust" score right now, and everything you do in town can and will affect that. If it gets low enough, they run you out of town. If it is high enough, you get 'perks', including XP. That's why I was asking you to specifically tell me, are you trying to kill these guys or just dissuade them from their present intentions.

Devil's Advocate
despite what the rules 'suggest'; any DM can change, modify, delete or add as they see fit - and as this is Anodyzed's game, it's his interpretation of the Pf rules that we use, not necessarily what's exactly printed on the page

sorry for the rant - just a pet peeve of mine when a player challenges the DM over a ruling by throwing 'the book' at him/her
[i've in too many games where this happened - and it takes the fun out of gaming, at least for me; some people like to argue, and that's why those players no longer game with our group]

I'm good with the question, and I also agree that gaming with a rules lawyer can be ... taxing... to say the least. ON the other hand, there is a LOT I don't have memorized about PF, so a nudge to remind me is ok too.
But as we get started in this campaign, y'all are learning how I run a game, what I "mean" when I ask a question, why I wait or don't wait to post... all those things that come naturally after a while. Believe it or not, to me, if a GM has a "Total Party Kill" then I really believe several people did something wrong. I want you all to 1) enjoy the game 2) be challenged by the situations I put you in 3) play your characters as you intend them to act. SO, if you see an ancient red dragon fly over, I don't expect you'd want to call attention to yourselves (at 1st level). If I put it there (this is just an example) there is something in its appearance that you can all gain (without dying trying to kill it). I really like skill checks, and will never penalize a character for making them along the way, unrequested by me. SHows me you're attempting to use your character's skills.
