Alright, that's encouraging. Cool.
Later tonight I'll have a chance to talk more in detail about the recent subject of the relationships and "fleshed-out" lives that your characters have in this world. In the meantime, jot down anything you guys think of or are interested in when it comes to this topic: enemies, friends, rivals, family, patrons, and so on. I think we ended up with everyone having at least Fortunes & Fates and Land of Fate, so pilfer through these texts for ideas. I'm only going to be deviating from this material when necessary (i.e. when existing NPCs, organizations, relationships, etc. don't fit with my aims, or I just don't like it; neither of which should be very often), so feel free to use and/or adapt any pre-existing information as it suits you. However, at the same time, I don't want you to feel like you're confined to use this stuff: go ahead and come up with anything you want. For example, Uroboros could create his own mamluk organization, or decide that Achmed is a member of the Dauntless. Stuff like Chow's entrepreneurial escapades, AlwaysCivilMike's web of information-gatherers, and Honorius' religious strife give me great opportunities for hooks and basic starting material. Anyway, I'll be back in later.

All right. Gex and his band of rogues have opened up their business at one of the bigger cities, I suppose. He hasn't actually thought too far into the future, but he's been building up some connections and stuff in the relatively short time he's been at Zakhara, finding his own place in the world. He's made a few friends and perhaps some enemies as well in the process.
There's his own ragtag bunch of misfits, for one thing. Considering their profession, they don't actually do all that much thievery these days: Gex himself doesn't steal, and the others have sorta picked up on his influence in that regard. Instead, they spend their time selling stuff, helping at the shop, crafting new weapons and other things for sale, and making contacts. His second in command would be the level 8 beggar-thief, whom he met and befriended shortly after arriving to Zakhara. Aside from him, she's also the only one who can actually use one of his repeating crossbows properly (I think she was still on level 7 when they met, so she got a new WP at level 8 and spent it accordingly), although she still can't replicate the design. Having lived in Zakhara for all her life, she's been building up quite a network of connections, which has been a great help in selling their wares elsewhere. Then there's the elf (level 6 matrud), who came from the desert some time ago, and ended up with Gex fairly quickly. He doesn't talk much about his past, nor about the reason he arrived to the city: from what they have heard, there was a bit of an incident, although he refuses to give any details. He's very good with knives, and has this really unnerving way of moving entirely without sound: if he's mentioned about this, he apologises, saying it's a habit he just can't shrug off. The hobgoblin (level 6 sa'luk), apparently, comes from an upper class family that has since then lost most of its status and prestige, and, in most cases, their lives as well. He says he knows who is responsible, but can't do anything about it... for now. He is clever and learned, able to understand and speak several languages, and decipher several kinds of ancient texts: he's the one who told Gex what all those books and scrolls in his wagon were about. The half-elf (level 4/4 fighter/sa'luk) is a war veteran, with many scars to show from it, having fought in quite a few battles in his time. He's nearing the twilight years of his life, and is allegedly a bit out of practice, but can still put up quite a fight. He was introduced to Gex by the beggar-thief, an old friend of his, and now serves as his bodyguard for most of the time, joining the kobold on his daily routines and businesses. Another human (level 5 merchant rogue) is a business partner of Gex's, having arrived from another city far away, learning about the new business and all these weird weapons, and deciding that he wanted his own share of the cake. There are hints of a failed business, possibly even a threat of assassination for unpaid debts, that forced him to leave his own city, but he is a good salesman and brings in some extra profit. Two more humans (level 5 sa'luks) arrived some weeks ago, apparently after the elf had saved one of them from a bunch of thugs, pledging themselves upon his service - and through him, Gex's. They're twins, a brother and sister, very protective of each other: apparently orphans, forced to steal to make their living ever since they were children, very thankful for both Gex and the elf to help them out in the time of need. In spite of following the elf first and the kobold second, they're some of his most loyal companions. Then there's the dwarf (level 4 beggar-thief), who claims he was once among the very top of the food chain, before he lost it all under circumstances he doesn't discuss about. He ended up having to beg and steal for his living, until a short string of lucky coincidences eventually landed him a job at Gex's. His (allegedly) noble background gives him no real areas of expertise, but he still has some traces of the force of personality he once had, which has proven useful on several occasions. Most of the time he's pretty depressed, though, because of all that he has lost, and how nothing could compare. A human servant of the hobgoblin's family (level 3 beggar-thief) was forced into the streets under the same circumstances his master was. Unable to find another job, he resorted to thievery, until he met the hobgoblin again, and through him, managed to find work at his master's master. He has since taken responsibility for all the menial tasks of the establishment, taking care of laundry and the trash and all that kind of stuff: it's all the stuff he used to do before, after all, and veritably stole the work from everybody else. Nobody complains. Finally, there's the other half-elf (level 2 sa'luk), who one night decided that Gex, a pathetic-looking kobold with so many valuable looking shiny things, would be an easy and profitable target for a mugging. Instead, she got kicked around pretty badly, and afterwards pledged herself to his service, for several reasons, all of them fairly irrelevant in his mind. She's young and inexperienced, but quite smart, a fast learner, and useful to have around all in all. As far as enemies go, Gex has received several offers from other merchants and influential rulers, to share the technology behind his repeating crossbows. He can't help but wonder how apparently no one else in this entire land can figure out how they're made: but since this appears to be the case, he has refused all offers, deciding that it'd be far more lucrative to keep the monopoly all for himself. The amount of shady figures he's seen around has increased exponentially each time he has refused another offer... or maybe it's just his imagination? Anyway, I hope that's enough food for your DMing. If there's anything that requires clearing up or fleshing out, do ask. |

Sorry for not posting Jay. My mom had a 'simple' surgery 4 days ago that turned out to NOT be simple. I spent a great deal of time at her house taking care of her. Everything is great now so no worries. Anyways, will get posting and getting Artimus finished.

Bummer, man. I hope she's feeling a lot better!
I've got a couple projects going between the Facebook thingie and Explosive Runes, but I will attempt to take a break and at least respond to a post, if not finish up this ginormous character sheet. |

Yeah, sorry to hear that AlwaysCivilMike, and glad to hear that everything's ok now.
Awesome, Chow. I love it. Honorius, you can post the story here for now. I would say that just so you know, I had originally just came up with that whole thing as an example off the top of my head as I typed, so you don't have to use it--but I guess it worked out, and if you've elaborated on it, that's cool. I'll be interested to read it. Kariel, I think you should decide that for yourself, unless you want me to. If you're hesitant to make decisions that I might not like, don't worry about that at all. It's your character, and since I've robbed you of the opportunity to actually develop all this stuff, I feel like I can at least give you guys free reign in "reverse engineering" your backstories. If you want Yezeed to be very close with the sheik, or if you want him to be at odds with the sheik; if you want him to be notorious as a warrior and rider amongst some of the major tribes of the High Desert (which is where I'm assuming Yezeed is from), or if you want him to merely be as well-known as his high level would imply (i.e. "one of the finest young men of House Nasr" etc.). You don't have to have pages of specifics by any means. I saw you had included the bit about the Hakima of the Veiled Oasis, and that was great.

Of course, you need to come up with the names for them. I've never been good with names.

I think I should rework the story first. It's at about 2000 words, but I think I can shorten some of the dialog to get it to the point. The description of the courthouse is 500 words alone.
The names of the characters in the story include Udam Ibn-Samad (The Qadi) Averix Julafel (The Grand Vazier whose tomb was uncovered) Zariah Min-Julafel (Descendant of Averix) Ali Dhalim Alafa (dwarf priest of Najm representing Zariah) Jabar Al-Naga (priest of Najm accusing Alnaschar of heresy and who represents Dalmin Yafir Al-Zahir) Dalmin Yafir Al-Zahir (distant relative of the Grand Caliph and owner of the land on which the tomb of Averix rests) Khalil al-Assad al-Zahir (The Grand Caliph, only mentioned) Varuush Mahtay (The adventurer who braved the tomb, client of Alnaschar) Alnaschar Min-Raurin (The Player Character) I have a trial tomorrow morning, so I'll get to this when the dust settles. |

Can't wait. I love someone who can write as much as me.

I think we should just get a game thread rolling, get some posts on it and go from there.

My apologies if that's what you were waiting for...I was kind of wondering, since I hadn't seen you post anything about it.

I think I've got my character more or less done, myself. I probably won't need to flesh out my band of thieves too much, since their lives aren't directly in my control anyway.

Alright, I've done the private character threads. You guys can go ahead and post whatever you feel like in whatever format you want in these. I'll edit my original posts later to include a character sheet (like I talked about long ago).
I think I may end up asking a red (maybe Magrok since he created the game) to create an additional subfolder for the game, because this is going to end up being pretty crowded.
