JC's MR Bar

Welcome to JC's MR Bar!

What is this place? Upon entering the room, you see a large space filled with hard-light projectors, creating a semi-translucent scene of a restaurant, in an otherwise bleak, hospital-white space. Some people are here physically, standing out among all the holograms, others must be streaming into this Mixed Reality room. The secret sauce happens when you put on your Spatial-Stable-Diffusion lenses, glasses, or goggles. Suddenly, everything jumps to life in vivid colors as the virtual mixes with the real, to create an immersive Mixed Reality Space. JC, the virtual Host of the Bar greets all guests, welcoming them to dine on the finest selection of beverages and TexMex food Mars has to offer. Eat, Drink, and be Merry, for tomorrow, we fly!

As a side note, JC highly recommends the Martian Tots and Chocolate Milk from the Kid's menu.

OOCJC's MR Bar is an open roleplaying space for Outplay competitors or anyone else who wants to roll up a character, to join in some banter together between rounds, or during the event to cheer on their favorites IC. There will be no GM posts, and this has no effect on the competition. It's just here for fun.

Wrong Way
right-aligned image
Wally opened the doorway alright - then gave a long, hard look inside. Emotionally it felt like several seconds, it probably wasn't but that's what it felt like before he makes his first hard choice. He turned around, shaking his head with some intensity as he mutters back into the passageway.

"Nope. Nope-Nope-Nope-Nope. Now ain't the time to be showin' fake people to Ol' Wrong Way." he gives out-loud, stepping back and pondering just leaving the area. Wally "Wrong Way" Taplin, survived almost 6 years standed in an uninhabited dwarf star system on nothing but the broken remains of what was supposed to be a mining expedition ship and his wits. When he made it back to Sol he was going the wrong way up the designated space-lane for using the SunGate, between that and the course he had to take to build up the speed to use the SunGate to get back in the first place he became known as "Wrong Way" Taplin.

Physically, he's fully recovered from the ordeal and he even likes the nickname to boot.

Mentally ... Let's just leave it that there are Concerns. If the mission weren't so important he probably wouldn't be here and be in a psychiatric facility somewhere.

To be fair, the same ordeal that lead to these concerns has made him a recognized expert at keeping things working and keeping people alive when the Space-Poop hits the Space-Fan. And as if to give an example, he stops and thinks a second before coming up with a solution. The Spatial-Stable-Diffusion Lenses are put in a pocket and he taps a temple, mentally telling some cybernetics in his skull that he'll be entering an environment where there will be welding. From small slits where his eye sockets meet the bridge of his nose, dark lenses deploy. Polarized Eye-Shields.

When he re-enters JC's MR Bar the eye-shields have the opposite effect the glasses would have had. He sees largely empty, bleak, hospital white space and all the holograms in it flit between barely visible outlines to completely invisible to him depending on the angle the light happens to have with his head. Just the way he wants it. Also makes the lighting in the room look pretty dim and the people that are real scattered about make this look more like a smoking lounge to him but he's fine with that. And he still hears everything just fine.

The next challenge is finding a place to sit and finding a menu he can actually read. Or they would be challenges but he already had solutions for that. He just ignores the holo-host, sits at a table with no real people in it holograms or not, and the blank slab that would be a menu doesn't get a second look. He knows what he wants anyway.

He waits until it sounds like someone is trying to talk to him and grunts.

"Steak, Grilled Medium Rare. Roasted Mixed Vegetables. A generous tumbler of Whiskey, an even more generous tumbler of Water." he grunts to the holo-waiter before they finish a sentence. It's easy to get around a holo-menu you can't see if you don't care what's on it.

"And Dirty Rice. Dirties' you can."

It's also rude to completely ignore a resturant's theme. You should make *some* effort. Dirty Rice was Tex-Mex, right?

"Anything else?" asks a voice whose source is invisible to Wrong Way, but that actually relaxes him a little.

"If you can swing it, have humans hands grill my steak. Hell, I'll do it myself if you clear a space."

"We don't let guests into the Kitchens, sir."

"...Yeah, probably shouldn't. Jus' tell me it's someone who knows what they be doin'."

"Why yes sir, you're in the right place."

"If you say so...", he replied skeptically. He looked around the bland room, It looked more like an incredibly clean storage room then an establishment for consumption of various food and drink. The lighting was all wrong. Bright, almost sterile feeling white walls covered with what he assumed were hard light generators that weren't the cheap models from years ago. They weren't state of the art from the look of them, but whoever owned this plate had put some money into it. Various washed out holographic images moved by like ghosts around the room, being a stark contrast to the few "warm bloods" that were in the room. A slightly more defined hologram, the one that had greeted him upon arrival, said nothing to his less then enthusiastic reply, only gesturing to one of the many tables.

He followed the computer generated form, smirking slightly at the suit that it was wearing. It looked like old holoreels that his parents had shown him of one of their friends, the white suit apparently not the traditional garb for one to be married in. To see it on a hologram that was playing a maitre'd was almost a testament to the absurdness of where he found himself. "Please have a seat sir.", it said with a tinny, all too cheery tone to it's voice. "The rest of your party should be along shortly. Until then, may I suggest a beverage, or an appetizer? Our martian tots and chocolate are simply exquisite.", it said, kissing the tip of his fingers with a flourish.

He smirked at the programmer that had designed this AI, wondering if it had given it the culinary palliate of a mid worlder's toddler. "I'll take the wings tossed in hot sauce, with a tall glass of your local beer. And those wings better be chicken, not rat.", he said, his tone being a bit more serious at the request.

The oddly dressed server nodded, then vanished into thin air. "No sense wasting photons I suppose.", he said quietly. He picked up the piece of paper that had been set in front of each seat on the table, the paper being of firm stock. He reviewed the writing, the font having the look of a brochure that was trying to sell him something. 'Ironic considering we were already sold.', he mused. The ending made him smirk, the irony of the last line making him chuckle considering what lay ahead. "Eat, Drink, and be Merry, for tomorrow, we fly!", he mused quietly. "Funny....I remember that saying being a bit more sombre in wording.", he continued, his culture from an old Earth nation having such a saying before a battle.

One where you weren't expected to return.

The waiter had returned with a tall, frosty mug of an amber liquid, the head thinner then he had expected. Beside it was a large helping of boneless chunks of breaded chicken, a reddish tinge to the breading hinted at their heat for anyone crazy enough to consume them. "Perhaps you'd prefer to view your surroundings with the Cromouse SSD lenses, to enjoy it's full flavour."

He chuckled at the description. "Only a creation such as yourself would say anything virtual would have flavour.". He decided to humour it; he had some time before the rest of the crew would arrive. He put them off and the surroundings did indeed flesh out, although the tones were off. The reds had more of a pink tone. The blues more of a turquoise. The greens almost like they were radioactive. He took them off his face, looking at the goggles briefly before grabbing his tools. With a few twists and turns, and rebooting the goggles into the maintenance mode, he found the settings for colours were off. A few seconds, and he found that the colours looked the way they should when he put them back on. Or at least as good as they would for things that weren't real. As he took the googles off, he wondered if he could try his own and see if he could have some fun with the VR server, but thought better of it. 'Best to stay in the real tonight.', he thought to himself, putting his tools away. He lean back in his chair and sipped at the beer that had already begun to sweat slightly, fumbling around for the pack of cigars that he had, or what few he had left.

The door opened with a greater force then he'd expect for most to use, and a gent that looked almost as hard as his reflection did stood there. He raised an eyebrow at the scruffy human's appearance as he went back into the hallway, as if he had seen something he didn't agree with. "Didn't think I was that hard on the eyes.", he smirked. The human came back, but this time wearing something over his eyes. He looks at them briefly as he places his cigar tin on the table, wondering why he'd be wearing Poalrized Eye Shields in such an environment. 'It's bright, but it's not that bright in here.', he thought to himself. The hand seemed even more curt with the holo waiter then he was, which was impressive at best.

He had to be honest, he was starting to like this guy.

"It might be a stretch to say it's anyone in the kitchen, let alone knowing what they're doing.", he said loudly so it carried across the room. "If you wouldn't mind a warm blood to share your dinner with stranger, there's more then enough space at this table.", he continued, raising his glass slightly at the end of his offer.

LedanyaFor at least the third time, she pulled her hand back from the button that would turn the hologram unit on and bring her to the party. Parties were definitely outside of Ledanya’s comfort zone. Parties with strangers even more so. She could put up with a small gathering of other HAC employees – well, unless the group from Marketing came, they were too much – but even that was stressful. So many questions that didn’t matter forcing her to come up with answers that no one cared about. People misjudging, or intentionally intruding on, personal space and the resulting awkwardness creating enough distance. Smile or don’t? Listen or talk? Agree or make a counter point? Laugh, oh when was the right time to laugh?

No. Parties were not for her.

Life was changing though and as much as she wanted to resist, she knew that she had to change along with it. She was about to spend a long time surrounded by strangers. The trip they were all about to embark on would take them far from Mars and she still couldn’t believe she was going. Not that she had wanted to - she was given little choice really - but in the past few days she had begun to think of it as a new beginning. A chance to be herself and to help Alice become who (not what, no not a what anymore at all) Alice would become.

Alice was standing motionless in the rooms corner, her awareness programming in standby mode. Ledanya had asked Alice to remain asleep as she got ready. She hated asking this of Alice and would prefer them to be sitting and talking together, but Ledanya was nervous enough about attending the party - even as a hologram - and having Alice sitting across from her as she got ready was too much. Being watched as she stumbled through socializing would be mortifying.

Stop all your fretting. Time to get this over with.

Determined, she pressed down the button that started the hologram unit. A ring of pale blue light began to circle in the air directly in front of her, releasing gossamer reflective threads with each revolution. The connected and joined together until a mirror like plane hung in the air, its edge of light matched by the glow around the button she had just pressed. A moment of disorientation came over her as the ring of light grew brighter. Some people didn’t like the Holoring system because of this. She found it more to her liking than the more common Imagetron system though. It was portable and could be setup anywhere which made it easy to have privacy, not like the banks of Imagetron stations found at every gathering place and block center.

She always had more confidence portraying herself through her hologram than in person. Maybe not having to feel herself in her own body as she engaged socially was easier or maybe it just felt freeing to know it wasn’t really her standing there. That could be why she was able to be a bit bolder in her appearance than normal. For this event she had put her hair up and donned a sleeveless purple dress. Not too revealing but enough to be out of her comfort zone. She had toyed with the idea of makeup to match but that was too far a stretch for her.

When the disorientation passed, she could see JC’s MR Bar as if she was actually there. Besides the slight bend to what she saw when she moved her eyes around too fast it was an almost perfect recreation.

“I’ll have a Mars Rocket, please” she told the attentive bartender across from her seat at the large, gleaming silver bar. It took only a few seconds for a small circle of red light to appear on bartop and another two for a holographic image of a perfectly poured red and white liquor to appear. Another second for the light to turn green indicating the image was coded to her hologram and could be taken. Reaching out her hand, in her room some thirty kilometers away and at the bar she believed she was in at this moment, she picked up the Mars Rocket and took a sip. It had no substance but she still took a long pull from her drink to try and steady her nerves. It was amazing what the brain could convince itself of – she could taste the spicy sweetness of the holographic drink as it entered her holographic body.

Another long sip and she turned to face the room. So many people, so much noise. There were a good amount of people there physically but not enough to outnumber those who had attended as holograms. It was the sound of two men talking nearby that caught her attention. Neither looked too polished and the bits and pieces she heard were topics that sounded pretty blue collar to her. They were the exact opposite of the types or persons she usually interacted while working away in her lab. She was here to break out of her comfort zone and they seemed the perfect pair to help her do that.

“Would it be okay if I joined you?” Her warm smile came through on her hologram just as it did in person. She tried not to stare at the large hunk of meat one of the men was cutting into. She heard that some people intentionally eschewed genetically modified meats and cloned protein pastes but the thought of someone cutting that off a live animal made her uneasy. “It looks like we may be traveling together for a while doesn’t it?”

OOCFigured this would be a good place to work out character's voice and style before things get started.

Wrong Way
right-aligned image
Wally motioned that the other guy could join him, once he got a look at him to make sure the man was real. Bit of a hazard with him. He doesn't drop the Polarized Eye-Shields, starting with a grunt of affirmation.

"Would prefer it. Now ain't the time to be showin' Ol' Wrong Way fake people." he remarks, looking over the other guy's order. He groans in disappointment when he gets a look. He can see why it would be called Chicken Wings and Beer but - ugh.

"Ah, man. Pretty sure I've scrapped things off work boots that have better claim to bein' chicken. An' I know I've peed better Beer." he gives with no tact and not looking forward to his own order anymore. Accurately. The steak looked -

"An' they Printed mah Steak. Ah, hell - and they call *Me* 'Wrong Way', there ain' even Grill Marks." he complains, but at least it's with his seat partner, not at him. And notice he's still eating everything. Yeah, he might complain - but he was used to the SUAEI principle.

Wally sits up when it sounds like one of the holograms was talking to them. Doesn't seem like they'd program the holos to do that. He looks up, the Polarized Eye-Shields still in place to filter out the lighting of the projectors. It takes some movement of his head to catch a vague outline of a hologram that seemed to be looking right at him and the other guy.

"So, are you a programmed Holo NPC or a Real person Phoning In? Because if it's the first, please f#$% off." Wally remarks, the colorful language flowing naturally like someone whose forgotten what kind of language was polite in public.

"If you're the second, good on you. Who Prints a Steak and has the gall to call it Medium Rare? Half a mind to rig one of the projectors, at least get some proper grill marks going. Wally Taplin, folks call me "Wrong Way"."

The gruff looking man seemed to accept his invitation, or at least that's what he took the grunt as before he walked over. He kept on what looked like Eye Shields; a strange bit of eye wear to be donning in...well anywhere that you weren't working on metal.

He sensed that wasn't the only thing that would be unique about this warmblood.

"Would prefer it. Now ain't the time to be showin' Ol' Wrong Way fake people.", the man stated. As the man stated, he gave a thought as to the moniker. It sounded familiar, but for the life of him, he couldn't remember why. 'This is going to bug me all day', he thought in annoyance.

A loud groan comes from his new guest, and following his gaze it's regarding his culinary choices. "Ah, man. Pretty sure I've scrapped things off work boots that have better claim to bein' chicken. An' I know I've peed better Beer.", he says loudly, clearly giving no cares about who hears his annoyance. They were already getting a few stares.

He could do nothing but laugh at the situation.

"Oh they're not that bad. At least it's not rat.", he said with a smile. "And I've had piss beer. This at least doesn't have the slight hint of ammonia.", he said, taking a long pull of the beverage in question, giving a sniff to make sure that it really wasn't made from the sewage water. It wouldn't be the first time that's happened.

"An' they Printed mah Steak. Ah, hell - and they call *Me* 'Wrong Way', there ain' even Grill Marks.", his table company went on, clearly annoyed with his steak. Or at least, what passed for steak.

"And now you see why I didn't order steak.", he smiled, popping a chicken nugget into his mouth. "Ba wha di you axpect?", he continued, chewing and talking at the same time. "This room is mostly empty unless you're wearing goggles. Our servers are holograms. Is it any surprise that the food would be any different?". He stopped himself at that before he got into a rant, but it was rare to find someone that seem to understand that not all technology is an improvement.

“Would it be okay if I joined you?”, a voice that completely lacked the gruffness of his table companion stated. It sounded soft, feminine, but unsure, as if it was worried that they would make a social blunder, or that they were at the wrong place. He looked over to see a slight female presence, hovering at their table like a ghost. He hadn't put the goggles back on, and the projection seemed washed out and faded. He could understand her trepidation; his dining companion was brash to put it mildly.

"No she looks like a phoner, Wally.", he said, a little more flatly then he had intended. "From the image quality, she's in the capital, or nearish. Notice there's no artifacting or lagging of movement?". He gestured to the general table they were at, "Sure, come join us. Name's Donny."
