(5E) Darkvision and Color - and other guilty admissions

So as I was walking my dog this evening, he went after a rabbit which (for some odd reason) led me to think about darkvision. And then I realized I've been a bad player - I have written out colors while using darkvision, which doesn't let you see them. So I need to be more cognizant of this in the future.

Anyone else guilty of this? Or any other rules you used to violate and then suddenly you realized aw man, I'm THAT guy!

Earlier on in my DM'ing career I had a party of nothing but darkvision-users enter a dark underground temple. None of them produced any form of light. Not only did I fail at not having them roll at Disadvantage for being in total darkness; I also constantly described things in colors. Looking back now I can't help but groan at my inexperience.

One rule I was really bad at for a long time was taking passives into consideration (perception, insight, etc.). If a player entered a room and had, let's say, passive perception of 15 - I'd ignore that until they actively rolled perception. If an item had a DC 12 to spot and they rolled an 8 then they'd completely miss it. When, instead, they should've seen it right away and never had to of rolled in the first place!

I was bad with the passive checks as well until I had a PC pick up Observant, then I really had to be diligent with it.

I was never a fan of how passive checks are done to begin with, so I houseruled them right away.
An automatic Take 10??
In most cases there, you would purposefully not pay attention and automatic Take 10s have always been feats or class features.

It almost feels like there needs to be some sort trade-off to counter the advantage of darkvision. Like, in movies when a character is wearing night-vision goggles and the light comes on.
