Kova YarabreeKova looked up with mixed alarm and gratitude at the citizen calling for the guard. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed the slender rogue looking skittish. "Well, that's natural, I suppose," he chuckled under his breath. "Don't worry, Ky. We're clearly in the right here. And any guard worth the name will see that it was these strange blades wielded by the warforged that caused the fatal wounds on the provost." As he turned to see if there was anything he could do for Ghir'was he added over his shoulder with a winkt: "You might want to put that book away in your pack before they get here, though."

Solomon Salt
Solomon came to a halt from his spin, winced as the flesh flapped around the crimson cuts and withdrew his wrecking ball from the downed constructs. With a agonized grin he squatted beside those that lay dead before him and padded them down for anything that could reveal ID them or their employer. Then he rose and turned to the group with one gloved hand clutching the wound just below his collarbone. He had a limp to his gait as he stepped closer, We need to investigate further. his otherwise booming, stern voice had a wheeze to it, We need to pass information of the Provost's demise to Captain Marta and, he grimaced as he moved his hand and revealed a deep wound at the upper section of his torso, I need to see a medic.

Ghir'Was"Warforged should have run. Not very good at making war... " Ghir'Was allowed himself a chuckle as he knelt down. He torn off some cloth from the fallen Assassin. He tucked it into his belt and felt the wound for the first time. It was deep. Pain was now introducing itself to the shifter as the rush of battle said it's farewell. It was content to leave this group now to go and find more warriors to drive it's insatiable need for violence. Pain was less kind to Ghir'Was then the rush of battle was. He soon found that laying down was more comfortable. Not a great sign. "The rain feels cool tonight. It was a good night to fight." He thought as he let the rain drops fall on his face. Looking up into the night sky, he took a deep breath and winced. "Ghir'Was appears to be bleeding... A lot."

Ky RavsenKy's breath came hard as the final assassin which faced her crumpled, and then a sharp oath as the flickering dragon suddenly rose and exploded in the air. It was quickly followed by a cry for the Watch and another oath to accompany the realization the conflict had been witnessed. Her hand had risen to where she had tucked the journal out of instinct, one that Kova had clearly caught as she turned to snap at the halfling. He caught her short though, her cheeks flushing crimson as her jaw clenched and she made a clear showing of tucking the journal into a side pouch, amid a few stray papers which were clearly her own. "The next time you want to declare your conquest with fireworks to alert the whole damn city my dear... maybe wait?" It started out sharp and ended far softer, almost flirtatious as Ky managed to still the sharp edge of her tongue and return to honey sweet, just in time for both Solomon and quickly followed by Ghir'was to announce their injuries.

"Solomon!" A hiss as she whirled back from her almost lecture to Kova and reached out to the dwarf, her brows furrowed. "Kova, check... Ghir, Arrun? Damn, cursed spires... " Yes, there was blood, blood was bad, but for the life of her in the flickered jagged lines of lightening and dim pools of light, she could barely tell where the exact source of the blood was and just how bad it was, save that she doubted the dwarf would whine about a mere scratch. Ghir sounded maybe worse, but nothing was clear out there in the storm. "Should we get back to the tavern, it is closest, the university? We need shelter, the Watch will be coming, but we can't just... damn it, if we mend everything, what does 'that' look like to the dumb mindless law enforcing schmucks who act first and think later?"

Arrun Corliostor
Arrun wiped the assassinís bodily fluid off his blade with the cloak of the leader, sheathing his blade when he was done. He slung his shield onto his back, cringing slightly when he stretched his fresh wound. The battle had been quick, but their attackers had managed to deal some damage to the group. They were fighting together for the first time so, until they all learned each otherís styles, they would probably incur a few more wounds.

The shouts for the watch quickly caught Arrunís attention. He never worried about the legality of his actions, he had good on his side. But, the watch would ask questions and probably take whatever the group found. Arrun had signed up to retrieve a holy artifact and he needed the information they found to complete their mission. With the provost dead, his writings and journals were vitally important and they could not take a chance on the watch getting any of it.

Arrun nodded at Solomonís suggestion, "Yes, the best course of action would be to get this information back to Captain Marta at the Wayfinders. The tavern was only important because we were supposed to meet the provost thereÖthe watch will probably come around asking questions." He gestured towards the university, "Same for the university, they will want information about the provost. What he thought was useful in this quest was with him, thatís why the assassins were after it." He pulled the wand of cure light wounds from his pack, "Letís head to the Wayfinders and I can try out my new toy. I should be able to heal us along the way."

"Murderers! Call the Watch!" others take up the call...

Rifling through the pouches and belts about one of the warforged's waist, Solomon finds very little worth while: a few gold coins, a vial, a few worthless scraps of paper, and several sling stones. He notes, however, that upon the many plates that make up the attacker's shoulders, chest, and arms that there are many etchings of swords and other bladed weapons. They almost resemble tribal markings.

As Arrun kneels down to wipe the sap-like alchemical fluid from his weapon, the rest of you catch your breath, assess your wounds, and discuss your next move in the midst of five defeated warforged and one murdered provost. It takes more effort than he anticipates, and as he tugs at the leader's cloak, you see a mark upon the side of her head, deformed by the impact of someone's weapon. With the intermittent illumination of the storm, you make out a single word: Cutter.

"We need shelter, the Watch will be coming, but we can't just..." Ky continues, and as if prompted by her mention of their name, you hear the first shrill whistle as they close in. Up in the towers, the calls for them stop, but a flash of lightning reveals several people standing by their windows, watching you intently.

"We need to investigate further..."

"Call the constable!"

"Ghir'Was appears to be bleeding..."

"Should we get back to the tavern..."

"You'll never get away with this!"

"... the best course of action would be to..."

"Turn yourselves in, ruffians!"

They can't hear you, right?

As Arrun begins tending to the wounded and the whistles increase in frequency, the shouts for help begin again. It is no wonder that you do not notice that something like a large, metallic beetle crawls forth from Cutter's throat... at least, not until it unfolds tiny transparent wings which begin to buzz furiously! By the time you take notice, it takes to the air like a bolt from a crossbow, quickly disappearing into the storm! And leaving you to wonder at its significance...

The whistles sound again first from one spire and then the other, and you realize that the Watch is using them to coordinate their search as they move across the network of windswept, rain-soaked bridges, clearing block after block. They'll be upon you in a few short moments...

Ghir'WasAs Ghir'Was is being tended to, he utters above the noise of the rain. "If we run, Ghir'Was will do his best to elude them, to free us. Know that only the guilty run. Ghir'Was does not wish to end the life of a guardsman who is doing his duty... It may come to that if we choose flight." He sits up, the effects of Arrun's "toy" having given him freedom from pain. He begins to stretch his arms, and crack his knuckles. It is apparent that he expects another fight very soon. With a one final twist of his head, several cracks can be heard in sequence. The Shifter adjust his armor, and grins at Arrun.

"Keep that handy Arrun Corliostor, there may be more blood shed this evening... We seem to have been granted a boon!" His laugh is like a wet cough buried deep in his throat. Ghir'Was still felt the urge to tear and to gnaw, so while the others debated the merits of explanation vs flight, he paced back and forth. His eagerness to have an understanding of what was next was apparent.

Kova YarabreeStarting to get irritated by the racket and his increasingly soaked condition, Kova yelled mockingly back at the nosy citizen. "Indeed, we'll never get away with bringing these murderers to justice! It's commendation for us, have no doubt! Gods, if we don't get a good advocate we might even get a reward!" Turning to the others he said in the most reasonable voice he could muster: "Assume we run and elude the guards. How long before they get to the Gargoyle and question Colonel Boyd about a dwarf, a shifter, an armored man, a lithe but dangerous looking lady, and a devastatingly handsome halfling? And since some of you made such a show of knowing the man, I can only assume he'll even have some names for them to go with the faces AND tell them that we were asking about the provost. One need not be a diviner to see where this is going. We're in the right. Given the evidence at hand," he gestured at the fallen warforged and their weapons, "we're clearly in the right. I say we don't panic and talk to the guards. Worst case, they'll confiscate the provost's materials and return them to the Wayfinder Foundation."

Solomon Salt
Solomon grunted in response to Ky's unnecessary exclamation on his name. I don't need your pity, woman. He crossed his arms over his chest, ignored the pain in his shoulder and gave her a displeased look. The shouts from above and the immediate response of both Arunn and Ky got him near growling. We can hardly leave the crime scene. We got the right of it, I agree. If you must, you can go to Marta and I'll stay here to explain matters to the authorities.

Solomon grunted yet again - for those with keen ears, there was slight variations in the grunts. One was a harsh and disapproving grunt, like his response to Ky's shout; another was tinted with a minimum of restrained delight - like when Arunn prodded him with the magic wand and caused holy energy to flow through his veins. Thank you.

The stern dwarf was not easy to triffle with, so he stood in a broad stance over the bodies when the guards came, explaining to them how he, as part of his job with the Wayfinder's and with the help of unnamed colleagues had bested the culprits as they were assaulted on the bridge. He knew the name of the dead provost, but in accordance with the truth, he also knew that they had come to late, to see who, specifically, had killed the man. Solomon had a well-educated guess of course, if the guards had any interest?

Any further questions - and Solomon was pretty stubborn on that part - the guards would have to take it up with the Wayfinder Society in general. He went as far as he would give them his own name, Solomon Salt.

Ky Ravsen"Spires!" The word came out as an oath, a hiss, a growl of frustration and a groan of realization as her gaze followed the 'escape' of a thing, a thing that perhaps they should have searched the bodies for, but she had slipped, she had forgotten even the basic rules of combat."Look... and it is nice to know that maybe you have never been in trouble Kova, but being an open book is not the best policy, the fewer damn details the better. We were hired by the Provost for protection and we failed, before we even met him... Crime doesn't happen up here, murders like never. And damn it, you guys get to prance about without being judged for your very birthplace... but me?" Tension and a trace of bitterness slipped into Ky's voice as she winced with each call for the Watch and near flinched at the sound of the whistles as they closed in. "If I end up in the jails, so help me... Marta is not gonna want to have us traipsing back and crying that we failed, we still got a job to do and things to figure out, why our guide is dead is just one more cursed thing on our to-do list. Me... me I would be gone by now, but... " Disgust as she threw her arms up in the air then turned to glare directly at Kova. "You watch your mouth, all of you, do not go spouting off anything without reason, no lies, but don't go out there spelling out our whole lives and giving them more to work with. And remember... the job is not over yet, not until we finish what were were hired for or the Guild pays for our funerals, unless you want to go tell Marta we can't handle the job and hire someone else... "

A warning offered as she dropped to her knees next to the deceased Provost and raised her voice suddenly. "Here... Watch! Guards, help!" To stand about and wait, she felt like a rat in a cage while the threat loomed, call them in then if they all decided to stand their ground, at least seem to actively be on the side of the Watch even if it was the utterly last thing that Ky clearly wanted to do. Even as she called out, Ky sagged back against the railing and stared up at the sky, her legs uncurled into a slight side sprawl, no longer the fighter standing tall, but a worn woman who looked utterly distraught, granted some might come on the scene and assume it was due to the dead body beside her, and it was, though not for the reason of empathy and loss, but dread.

"Here... Watch! Guards, help!"

Within moments, four males and a female wearing the green-and-black studded leather of Sharn's City Watch emerge from the rain-drenched night, their boots splashing through the overflow from the gutters that line the pathways. The leader, a powerfully built, bald dwarf with a Beards aren't a hard requirement for dwarves in Eberron...close-cropped gray beard, a crooked nose, and much of his scalp and face A veteran of some serious fighting in the Last War, no doubt. A guard simply doesn't see that kind of violence...dotted with scars, rushes forward, a heavy crossbow held across his forearm as he jogs around the fountain and into view. A stiff wind snaps at the red scarf wrapped around his neck, and a small, pulsing orb of arcane light hovering just above and behind his left shoulder illuminates the area as he approaches with a sense of urgency. To each side, the men and the sole woman march along but when they see the bodies between you, they stop their advancement and immediately drop into a battle-ready stance. The men drop their wicked-looking halberds to the ready and the female raises her arm to level a wand in your direction! You don't expect her to fire, but there's still that tingle of dread at having such a thing pointed at you. Still, you know they're just doing their job... as small a comfort as that might be.

"Olladra's bloody nose!" the dwarf curses, his eyes intense as he readies his crossbow.

"By order of the Watch, lay down your weapons and explain yourselves!" he shouts in a raw baritone that brooks no nonsense, taking the first step onto the bridge, his eyes darting between you and the many bodies at your feet. His eyes scan each of you in turn, lingering a while longer on Arrun and the shifter, Ghir'Was. "You! Keep your hands where I can see 'em!" he says to Kova before pausing for someone to explain the situation. Behind him, the men with their halberds watch you uneasily, not sure what to make of the aftermath of the battle, and the woman holds her wand steady...

Ghir'WasGhir'Was drops his axe, but does so gently, laying it down on the ground. "Dwarven guard who has a name Ghir'Was does not know, Warforged attacked Provost Bonal Geldem of Morgrave University. Professor who studies the Pre-Galifar. Warforged attacked this group when we came to look for Provost Bonal Geldem of Morgrave University. Professor who studies the Pre-Galifar. The Colonel Boyd who is honored by Ghir'Was, can confirm part of this tale for you. There are no lies, and that is all about Ghir'Was life that is required for the Dwarf who has a name Ghir'Was does not know, should know."

Satisfied with his statement, and having adhered to instructions given by Ky Ravsen, Ghir'Was nodded in her direction. He crossed his arms across his chest, both hands still in view. What more could the guard need from them now? He gave himself a small triumphant "hrpmh."

The dwarven guard's face twists in confusion at Ghir'Was' explanation of events.

"What in the Flame did I just hear..."

GMLet's do a skill challenge!

After a brief conversation, you learn that the dwarf's name is Sergeant Dolom.

If you wish to participate, make a Diplomacy, Sense Motive, Perception, Survival, or another skill check which you feel may give your character insight, convince Sergeant Dolom to consider a point of view, or point him to evidence which supports your claims. I'm looking for three successes vs DC 15 to succeed. Only one success will be counted per skill and I'd like each character to only make one roll in the challenge.

I'll grant a situational bonuses since the group is "in the right" of things. For example, depending on the behavior of the group, an eye witness may or may not corroborate the group's story, granting a +4 bonus to one of the above skills. Or if the individual making a skill check cooperates with the Sergeant, they may receive a +2.

Kova YarabreeKova chuckled softly after briefly thinking to draw his dagger to help the guards by re-lighting the area and then quickly dismissing the idea as possibly suicidal. He laced his fingers together, a position in which casting any spell with a somatic component would be impossible, and held them over his head.
Dice Perception with +2 situational bonus:
1d20+12 (3)+12 Total = 15
He scanned the scene for evidence to exonerate them. "A few things I'd like to point out, Sergeant Dolom. You will see that the Provost was killed with an edged, slashing weapon. Now, clearly there are several such weapons held by our party; however, I predict that you will find traces of blood on exactly none of them. Instead, you'll find that good Arrun and mighty Ghir'was and fair Ky here all have the lubricating oil of the warforged on their weapons. Solomon, my dwarvish friend, carries no blade and my dagger I have used only once today as the focus of a light spell. Of course we will gladly surrender all our weapons for your inspection."

After a brief pause to let the logic of it all sink in, he continued speaking at a slow--but not disrespectfully slow--pace. "In addition, as Ghir'was indicates, we all came from the direction of Colonel Boyd's tavern, the Gargoyle, which the Colonel can confirm. We tried to aid the victim after scaring off a lone assassin. The warforged here, you'll see, and perhaps witnesses in the surrounding buildings will confirm, attacked us from two sides with the assassin re-emerging from under the bridge. If they were together, as their markings, I feel confident, will suggest as much as the fact that they attacked with coordination from two directions, then clearly they had taken up positions on both sides of the ambush site. This probably was to prevent the provost's escape should he elude the first assassin. If the warforged are not the guilty party here, then I'd love to hear an explanation for why they were so positioned."

Thinking he'd helped their case immensely, Kova folded his arms in satisfaction, before remembering the situation and raising them again with fingers laced together.

Ky Ravsen You are surrounded by idiots Ky, idiots, and Argrim is laughing, cursed Watch, cursed arrogant halflings and stubborn idiots. Ky repeated the mantra in her head during the space in which the guard arrived, Ghir offered his explanation and they all managed to at least sort out who was in charge to talk to which allowed her to start to try to organize her thoughts. How many times had Argrim told her she could catch more flies with honey, or better “Ya look like a doll, move like a dancer but yer mouth is a shrew, charm girl, learn some.” Now here she was, and he proved right again. Had she sought to lie her way out of the situation, sure... but explain honestly and reasonably, and to the guard? Kova’s tone did not help her relax nor focus either and she found it difficult to organize her thoughts based on even some of thevery obvious things Kova had pointed out, did he really need to sound so smug? "As he said Sergeant Dolom, this is the, was the Provost Bonel Geldem, and we were hired and supposed to meet him tonight for well, whatever he was going to tell us, he failed to show at Grey Gargoyle and well, this is what we found when we went to look for him. Kova here barely had time to determine if he still lived when these...th...these five attacked from damned near nowhere.

One minute I was trying to gather his stuff before the rains took it away, the next there was some shout and Arrun here was near run through save his chest plate."
Do not call them things Ky, and damn it they are looking at you now, great, draw the guards focus, delightful Ky, delightful. Ky chided herself even as she slowly unfolded her hands and offered up the few stray papers with marred ink, ink wells and quills she and Solomon had managed to gather back into the satchel before the attack. "I am afraid more ended up in the runoff over the side, the water had begun to carry items away even as we were attacked."
