Matz Barron
For the briefest of moments, Matz

chewed on the name Doovol had given, Cleandro Senechal, but then the sparkly looking bard struck a chord that had gave ‘pleasant’ a whole new meaning. It resonated within the tiefling’s crooked head and send a shiver of delight down his spine and tail. Like a dog finishing its sexual act, he bared his sharp teeth in a delighted hiss, I could bath in the melodies of this bard all day. He nudged the halfling mage’s elbow gently, do you feal the foam, brother?

By the time Matz had finally turned his attention from the purple-eyed bard and smacked his lips in anticipation to join in on the guesswork of what the Wayfinders would bring them this time, the dwarven splint, he had pointed out for the others earlier, was straddling over to their table. Matz leaned back and grinned, brimming with self satisfaction, doing just about anything on an empty sack, make me moody too. I concur, Captain Tuvask. Argrim Tuvask? Once again, Matz rolled his neck while he allowed his

Then they all stopped speaking and Argrim turned his attention to Matz. The tiefling rocked forth on his chair, Keeper of the Fiend trait - I don't think I need to roll here, but let me know if I must.making sure the tail folded neatly up under his coat. He shot the man

Quick to find a way to get along with the talk, he turned his head to Ky, Yeah... tell us how you two know each other? Did you work together before Sir Tuvak turned Captain? Honest, eager eyes turned from Ky to the captain.

It seemed whatever had ailed Ky, had just as quickly disappeared in the same manner it had so uncharacteristically appeared. Both questions shot her way, which was not entirely up to her general state of wishing, but it had provided her just enough time to get things back under control. With a small roll of her eyes which coupled up with an all too innocent shrug of her shoulders, she Bluff=24casually responded. "Oh us? Eh just a recovery mission really, nothing exciting, really only a minor player, not entirely sure he even remembers me... Nothing like what we faced Kova, granted I am pleased to have you along again, your quick wit was a valuable asset, along with the more explosive aspects of your... personality."

Ky really could not help it as she offered a small tease back toward the Halfling, her own brow raised in a knowing, and almost mocking expression before she reached forward, and despite her prior assertion she was not in need of food, swiped a piece of bread from Kova's own basket.

Captain Argrim Turvask shrugs noncommittally as he scribbles something down about Doovol in what appears to be some sort of unrecognizable characters. A cipher of some sort? Then the scars on his hands catch your attention and you may wonder if any of the venture captains within the Wayfinders ever made a living doing something reputable before being drafted by Boroman ir'Dayne to help him lead this adventuresome enterprise. Then again, maybe reputable folk aren't the sort that would survive these far-flung adventures? By the mark running from the cheek beneath his eyepatch to the crown of his skull, however, some may have survived by the will of the Sovereigns, themselves.

"Did she? I'm not that familiar with her, myself, but I hear she's pleasant," he says with a straight face. His voice is as smooth as cream, and if not for whatever scarred his hide and took his eye, you'd figure he may be able to command a stage. Once he's done, he looks up with his one good eye at Ky and after a moment... seems to smile in spite of himself.

"Well if it isn't my little Mouse," he says as if he didn't see her sitting there until just now. "That it has! It really has. How are you doing, darling?" he asks, scribbling something down into his journal in that strange script. Can a one-eyed man wink? Somehow he manages to pull it off.

"Is that so?" he asks, though he doesn't seem surprised. If anything, he seems... proud. "You know, a lot of people look down their noses at the lower city, but I find it to be one of the most fascinating places in Khorvaire. In the midst of all of that dark and filth, you can find all sorts of wonderful things."

When Kova asks of the nature of their acquaintance, he looks over to Ky and lets her fill in her comrade. "Phaw, I'll never forget you, Mouse. Not as long as I draw breath," he says with a bemused chuckle. "I laid those wards, myself..."

"I suppose you can say we worked together, though she did most of the work. I stayed warm, enjoyed a bit of the local cuisine, made threats to keep everyone in line, took all of the credit and most of the pay." He flashes a charming, white-toothed grin at you all and goes back to scribbling one last bit in his journal before flipping it shut and sliding it into his breast pocket. If he seems to notice anything off about Matz, he doesn't show it.

"And on that note," he begins with a roguish grin as he steps back to allow one of the servers to deposit food and drink upon your table for all of you to share, "Do you know how A dragonmarked house of humans and half-orcs who possess the Mark of Finding. This gives them a considerable edge when it comes to finding relics... or serving as inquisitives and bounty hunters.House Tharashk sees more money than a House Kundarak, dwarves with the Mark of Warding. Bankers and moneylenders, most of them.Kundarak banker?" He lets the question hang for a moment, but it does seem rhetorical in nature.

"They hunt dragonshards. They crawl all over Xen'drik and through the bowels of Khyber usually refers to one of three progenitor dragons (the other two being Syberis and Eberron) or the massive subterranean realm which contains ancient fiends and otherworldly aberrant invaders from Xoriat. Either way, it carries a sinister and dangerous connotation.Khyber herself to gather up as many shards as they can get their hands on... and they sell them to a fellow named Tophran Damilek, one of the most powerful merchants in Sharn. Tophran apparently has a job for us that he doesn't trust House Tharashk with. Apparently there is a dragonshard somewhere out East, in the A vast grassland bordering Karrnath and the Mournland, said to be home to massive reptiles and nomadic groups of hunter/gatherer halflings. Both House Jorasco (halflings with the Mark of Healing) and House Ghallanda (Mark of Hospitality) are said to have their roots in the Talenta Plains.Talenta Plains, that he would love to get his hands on. If you can pull this one off, he's offered to pay you - after we recoup the expenses of the expedition - 4,000 gold coins... each." He pauses for dramatic effect, letting the number settle in before continuing. He looks pointedly to Kova but says nothing. Is he insinuating that all halflings instinctively know their way around the Talenta Plains? Is that racist?

"Now, if you're interested... he drags the word out as if you'd be mad to say no, "... I can set up a meeting with him so he can tell you more. I believe he will expect you to leave soon, though. If you've got any engagements that cannot wait, I'm sure they can wait."

GMIf I don't respond to a specific skill check, here, it's because it just didn't turn anything up. Also, I'm in no hurry here! If you want to dial it back and continue a conversation before he brings up the bit about the next job, please keep it going.

KovaThe diminutive wizard turned this opportunity over and over in his head. Four thousand gold was the kind of princely sum that Kova quite had expected to see in his lifetime, though he almost did not hear that part of the offer. What had first stirred his imagination was the prospect of a trip to the Talenta Plains, land of his forebears. His parents had escaped that land, at least as they saw it, but not having any personal experience with the apparent terrors (which he was sure were greatly exaggerated and long gone), Kova only knew fascination. What good halfling would turn down a chance to visit the Great Plains of Talenta? But even more fascinating than that was the chance to recover a dragonshard! He'd always wanted to study one up close, but better than that, any place that harbored an undisturbed dragonstone was simply bound to be interesting!

Kova began to speak up, but was struck with a sudden spasm of discipline. He did not wish to appear too eager before these new team members, of course. Nor did he wish to pre-empt any questions of concerns they might have. Kova knew enough of the big folk to know they were not all as dumb as they looked, and sometimes they thought of things that he did not. If one of them had a concern, Kova wanted to hear it, and that would be more likely if the halfling did not jump right in. Big folk did not like to be thought cowards in comparison to halflings, of course. So instead of speaking up, Kova caught himself, almost in time to choke back an incoherent syllable. But not quite. "Beh!!"

He played it off as a case of the hiccups and finished his breakfast wine to sell the ruse.

Doovol Khaavolaar Doovol saw that the man, Captain Turvask, was making some note of him, but did not think much of it. He would write what he would write. Doovol would act as he would act. He was, however, confused at the man's dismissal of I think that, when writing that last post, I was misremembering/misinterpreting the first post of the thread, and that it wasn't explicitly clear that Captain Marta was the one that invited us. Whoops. I think this is clearly an Unko mistake that Doovol probably wouldn't have made...Captain Marta. Odd. But Doovol did not consider it much further, unless it's brought up again.

The offer itself was impressive, and one that any with a desire for gold would instantly accept. Doovol was not strongly motivated by coin, and the expedition for something like a Dragonshard doesn't really bear much on fighting against evil or sharing the Flaming Arrowhead with the Dar. Doovol is skeptical, but tries to at least feign interest to gather more information. It isn't worth rejecting this job quite yet. "Of course, we should meet with Tophran Damilek. But do you know why he doesn't trust Tharashk? Can we be sure that the House will not find out about this Shard and pursue it themselves? Is it likely that the halflings will be hostile to our efforts? I would know my enemies and allies before accepting."

(OOC: If everyone immediately want to move along, I'm happy to go to the next scene, whether or not Captain Turvask answers my questions. Also happy to RP this out. )

Matz Barron
Matz brought the glass to his lips to hide the satisfied smile that played on his lips. 4.000 golden sails? Even the wealthiest of his acquaintances from the streets - and there were several who had a higher social status than the streets was accustomed to - didn’t hold that kind of money between their hands. Granted, some would have ways to get funding in an amount like that or sell their properties to set free such funds, but here was a dwarf promising him a one-time payment for a quick raid out of town...

Matz looked from the liquid in his glass to Kova who was clearly having problems digesting either the information or the olive in his drink got stuck in his throat. Matz reached out and clapped him on the back, hoping at least to rule out the possibility that the halfling would die right there as a result of suffocation, breaaatheee... he supervised. A glance over at Dovool got Matz thinking that the hobgoblin hadn’t understood the offer, He means to pay you Dovool, and us, four thousand gold pieces each for fetching that dragonshard on those plains. Simple. Home. Away. Home. Matz still had his hand on the back of Kova and he gave him another slap for good measures, You good now, Mister Kova? Can’t have you dusting the floor before we even get ourselves off for the business.

Matz swung back on his chair, leaning again and arranging one leg on the knee of the other. Then he pierced Argrim with blood-shot eyes, a cold seriousness snapping to attention, I’m a city dweller and have little insights on the Talenta Plains. They say there be even bigger reptiles than those that come here? Matz waves back at the hustle and bustle that was outside the Blinkdog’s. Think you can enlighten me a little on the place? How easy is it to find the shard, once we get there?

Thinking about getting there, had Matz grinning wide again. He snapped his fingers at Ky, thinking she got away easy with those tails, taking into consideration how she had been acting weird, Ky, damn it. Think about it... payment is after recouping expenses. Airship out. Jump-line down. Snatch, boom, bam. Portal up and flying cruise back home. Yeaahrr.

Matz looked excitedly back to the dwarf, I’m in.

It seemed, at least in a round about way, that Ky was cut of the same cloth as the one eyed Dwarf. Her expression continued to remain bland, even after the apparent 'recognizing' of her person, though at the soft undertone, she seemed to furrow her brow as if she sought to remember such event, and possibly whatever memory she had of it was slightly different.

The casual nature refused to be upset or otherwise excited by the information which followed, the actual information she was interested in, though Ky was still lost in that moment of thought, was this punishment of some sort? A slight, sideways glance at Kova at the apparent choking, though Matz seemed on hand to deal with anything possibly serious, which allowed the 'acquisition' specialist to ponder everyone's response a moment before she could delicately phrase her own thoughts.

"Why Doozie..." The two words dripped from her lips with a casual caress and languid drawl even as she moved, shifted to lean forward and rest her elbows upon the table, and once she had slipped another portion of Kova's meal into her possession, rested her pointer fingers against her chin. "Last time it was merely to be a meeting with a lovely man and a little maze that turned into a game of dodge and... " Ky's voice trailed off, the vagueness of her most recent adventure still hinted at the 'thrill' of it as, instead of a word, she drew her right finger across her neck.

"I would be sorely horrified to think that this might be any different when it all plays out, the powers that be are many things, but consistency seems to be their strong point. " The last was directed at Argrim, or so it might have seemed as her gaze flicked upward and there was, perhaps, just maybe, the flicker of a wink before she slowly unfurled and sprawled back into the chair once more to nibble on her 'stolen' goods.

"What do you think Kova, this a simple jump in and out? Something boring but wealth inducing? Maybe something a bit more exciting with a delightful little pay out at the end? I dare say the plains... it has been... a while, at least it isn't something... somewhere boring and sewer like?" It was with that she seemed to finally be aware that Matz had snapped his fingers at her as Ky slid her gaze towards him and winked. "Simple, in, out and bam.... such a manly thing to say... I'm in, of course, how could I turn down the esteemed Captain Turvask?" There was something definitely in the tone which suggested that Ky either had many reasons to turn down the Captain OR that the term esteemed was hard for her to swallow.

KovaRecovering quickly from his bout of stage-coughing, Kova nodded sagely. "Indeed, Ky! Though I would hardly call an opportunity to visit the Talenta Plains boring. If truth be told, I've actually never been, though I've read extensively about the place. It's always enlightening to see how the harsh light or reality can paint a different picture than the sage's plume. Count me in to be sure!" He raised his cup to the mission, only to realize he had finished his wine. "Oh waiter! Another cup?"

Argrim, the scarred Venture Captain, is content to listen as he savors his drink and tries a little of everything that the servers bring to your table - and some of what is on its way to other tables. He seems to enjoy listening to you muse over the possibilities of this adventure and your experiences with those of the past.

To Matz, he appreciates the There is no distinction between devils and demons in Eberron! It's said that they were once masters of the world (the Age of Demons) until the dragons (with the help of the Silver Flame) overthrew them and imprisoned them deep within Khyber. Furthermore, devils and demons are natives to Eberron. Spells like Banish are useless.demon-blooded-swashbuckler's can-do attitude and gusto. "This guy gets it." To his question of how easy it will be to find, "I got a lot of experience with this sort of thing. I'm inclined to say finding it will be easy... but getting your hands on it... that's where you make a name for yourself."

To Doovol, he says "Those are all great questions... but sadly, I didn't trade my eye for the ability to see the future" with an amused smile. "The only piece I can guarantee is getting you paid for doing the thing, and the only allies you can count on are the ones at this table. That's the gig, Dhakaani (Goblin) for "the mighty people" or "hobgoblin."ghaal'dar.

"As far as why he doesn't trust a dragonmarked house... well... why should anyone trust 'em?"

To Ky: "Call it consistency..." Argrim chimes in as he chews on something called an ozzie roll, "... call it whatever you like, Mouse. But if you can learn one thing from the illustrious *Legendary* adventurer and founder of the WayfindersLord Boroman, it's that nothing worth having comes without risk. He's not the founder of the revered Wayfinders because he played it safe..." he looks at Doovol, "... or asked the right questions."

"Sovereigns, this is the best thing I've ever eaten. It's just bread. How do they make something as simple as bread - BREAD! - so damn irresistable?!"

GMThat's all I have time to write! I'll try to follow up sooner rather than later with something more substantial!

Matz Barron
The wine worth your pennies, Kova? Matz rolled his tongue about the inside of his teeth, fishing out the last bits of Pesh whey that had gone astray in his chewing and gathering it all in a ball on his tongue. He took it out, inspected it for traces of unchewn potential and then flicked it away like a massive bugger, when he found it depleted. He flashed the waitress that came on Kova’s request a dazzling grin and leaned forward, I’ll have a cup too.

Talenta plains... Easy find, huh? That was all pleasant news, easy was - in Matz’s terminology - most often very good. any chance you can elaborate on the difficulties of getting it, my good sir? Or is that information reserved for this, Tophran Damilek, to expand upon?

Matz got the glass, sniffed it and savoured the sweet plum tinge it had. He was a street urchin by heart, but he loved the quality that rich folk had and every time there was an opportunity to play up his own standards, Matz was on the spot. You guys sense the oak maturation too?

Doovol Khaavolaar Doovol had never ordered the breakfast wine, and didn't intend to-- but the bacon and bread had come, and he was trying not to consume it too ravenously. He really should have ordered sooner. Argrim seemed to have a response to everything, though hardly any answers. The rest of the group seemed to be more than eager to join this venture, though. Whether or not they knew the details of what was going on.

"If the enemy leaves an obviously unguarded flank, you can be sure that it is guarded..." Doovol reminded himself of the short proverb a teacher once told him. Four-thousand golden galifars for something that would be easy to find? And little information on the difficult part? This all seemed too easy, and there was sure to be some further complication.

Best to find out what that complication would be. And Argrim wasn't talking.

"Yes." Doovol said, in acceptance of the task. "We should speak with Tophran Damilek. When can we meet him?"

It was only an arched brow she offered their 'job master' as he had to yet again drop that particular term of something akin to endearment. Still, despite her initial, momentary struggle, Ky seemed relatively on board with it all with only a small measure of obvious amusement. A slow stretch as she continued to nibble on her own, thieved bit of bread as she took the time to listen to the others, or more the two she had not most recently spent any amount of time with while attempting to not be killed. Kova she could guess his response, but theirs' she wished to be sure to catch every bit, each nuance. Thus far neither seemed to have the same annoying personal traits as had the height challenged pain in her rear, nor the same level of naivite as had their last religious adherant.

That much at least bode well, or so she told herself. Still there was indeed the immediate matter at hand, of which it really boiled down to the need to meet their actual 'employer', who... hopefully would not end up dead. Now that would be an awkward trend to set Ky, best this one goes in and comes out kicking.

"Hard wood, always a delightful flavour? Where to meet him, and indeed.. more should we be prepared to depart before this meeting takes place, I get a sense that this is a kind of... meet n run with little chill time between?" The off handed comment at the start was laden with a healthy dose of bland innuendo, which had flowed seamlessly into her audible pondering about just how much time they had to make any actual real plans outside of being dropped off as they were into something she was quite sure was not easy-peasy nor simple, otherwise this would not be their job.

Kova"Butter infused with garlic and basil, melted and brushed over the bread before they bake it," Kova offered. When he got the inevitable looks, he went on... "Captain Turvask asked how they make it so irresistible. That's how." More uncomfortable silence. "So, indeed! We should go speak with this Mister Damilek. I always travel light and am actually ready to depart for the Talenta Plains right now."

Ky seemed hungry. Kova pushed the basket over to her, not wishing her to do without. Then he thieved one of her newly acquired pieces of bread.

"Your meeting with him is... well, it looks like it's in about thirty minutes. You should be on your way, I guess!"

After quickly settling your tab, wrapping up your visit to the Little Plains and bidding farewell to Who immediately left to "see a man about a magebred horse..."Captain Turvask, you rush flag down the first skycoach and actually manage to arrive a few minutes early at the posh offices of one Tophran Damilek, dragonshard peddler and... collector of ivory eggs?

Once you are invited into his vault-like office in the Everbright district of Middle Menthis, you move across the polished white marble floors alongside a floor-to-ceiling display of thousands of tiny, many-colored, gem-studded little treasures displayed within small recesses. An For a gnome, that she shows her age at all means she is downright venerable...elderly gnome by the name of Ezala Whitelash offers tea and lemon-wafers while you wait or admire the merchant's collection. She kindly asks you to leave your weapons in the coat closet and doesn't fuss too much about Matz, but kindly asks that he stay put in the foyer while the rest of you meet with Mr. Damilek. After a brief wait, if only for the sake of staying true to the schedule, she shows you into Tophran's office...

Just as the parlor is, his office is lavishly decorated - though surprisingly small and not nearly as tidy. The main feature of the room is an enormous desk, which looks as though it is made of densewood and must have cost a small fortune. Several couches and stuffed armchairs dot the remainder of the room, while the walls are decorated with rich tapestries and beautifully illustrated landscapes of faraway places. A pervading sense of organized chaos fills the room. The desk is cluttered with several piles of papers while most of the paintings hang slightly crooked and the smell of sweet pipe tobacco hangs in the musty air. The man looks exactly as Captain Turvask described him: small, white-haired, and heavily mustached. As you enter, he puts down his pipe, finishes combing out his mustache, adjusts his spectacles, and without even asking for your names, launches into the proposition, rattling off details in a quick but droning voice likened to an impatient professor that brooks no nonsense.

"Here it is, the Crypt of Crimson Stars. Inside this crypt is the legendary Crimson Dragonshard. Supposedly the largest Eberron dragonshard ever discovered, but of course we can't be sure of that, as it hasn't been seen in a very long time. You will escort a team of my diggers to this crypt marked on the map, help them retrieve it, and escort them - with the dragonshard - back to me. For this, I will present the Wayfinder Foundation with a bank note to fulfill the Which in all likelihood includes a lot more than the 4k GP promised to each of you, but running an organization of this size has expenses to cover.terms of the agreement. Do you have any questions?"

Tophran hands over a faded map of the northern Talenta Plains, a large crimson star marked upon the map in the northern edge of a small lake a few days' journey west of Gatherhold...

Damn these pulp-noir NPCs and their Joe Friday banter! I hate to jump into another Q&A, but it's the next logical step. If you don't have any burning questions, I can get straight to it after a round of whatever you guys feel like posting. The tickets are on the table. All that's left is for you to pack your bags and let me know you're ready to go.

Doovol Khaavolaar Doovol followed along with the group relatively silently. The ostentatious nature of the welcoming hall give Doovol some pause-- were any of these begemmed baubles useful in some way? Or were they oddities, meant only to adorn? If they were useful as tools, they were wasted in this place. If they held stories behind their form, Doovol wished to know the stories, to find the inspiration hidden within them. If they were merely pretty things for the eye, they were a waste, and should be destroyed. Before Doovol could say as much to his companions, Ezala Whitelash lead them into Tophran's office. Seeing Matz left behind, Doovol eyes him, wondering what he's done. "We will speak shortly, Matz. In the meantime, perhaps you can learn something of the baubles all about you. I would know their purpose, and history.".

Inside the office, surrounded by his fellow Wayfinders, Doovol listened to the dry but informative Tophran speak. He liked this man. There was direction, purpose, and history to his words. But nothing extraneous. Doovol nodded, and posed his terse question. "Are there any specific dangers you expect? If so, I would know my enemy. If not, we will act with Muut."
