At least he got the hint, more or less, even if she almost expected later she would end up with some form of a lecture about being something... The religious types were like that, weren't they? Or at least her prior interaction with the Silver Flame had taught her she was in line for at least some askance looks. Still... he was useful, he was part of the crew that HE had put her in. She was not about to forgive that ol dwarf, even if she had to admit somewhere, somewhere deep inside, she did have a soft spot for him.

Despite the moment that had left her confident that they were about to be tossed out over a grouchy Doozol, suddenly they were in the clear, free and released to wander off and go about their own business. It was only through years of experience that the internal sigh of relief was released moments later, along with a small muttered oath, just loud enough that those closest to her could hear as she shot Kova a familiar 'look'.

"Well now that is over...how about we keep our focus on our end goal and not personal issues hmm?" A vague statement, as in it was not directed at anyone in particular, via her posture, but the intent was clear. It was then that she allowed a final deep sigh and grimace. Really she ought to have expected as such, prepared for such a thing, but then she had allowed herself to get into that funk after the fly over of 'home'... she had to not let that happen again, indeed as she realized it, her comment was directed at herself as much as Doozol.

There might be a lift, but rather than share the ride with the White Lions, you march down the winding staircase of the skydocks, leaving the sleek Lyrandar airship and Captain Movato behind as you try to put some distance between yourselves and the gruff police force. On every street corner, a dimly burning lantern flickers, barely bringing any light at all to the city streets. Even so, you see very little color... except for a blood red splash here or there. Combined with the gothic architecture, it seems as if the city does not just abide... it looms. It seems that more often than not, when you look up, there is a fanged gargoyle looking down upon you as you pass, as if the city itself is keeping a close eye on you.

You come to an overlook where a single, wide lift is loading a wagon and a few Bred by House Vadalis, these strange and beautiful animals have elongated legs for speed and slightly larger chests for stamina...magebred horses to be carried to a sprawling city block at the foot of a cliff face. As you approach, the ground rumbles beneath your feet and a sound like distant thunder rolls across the city! Boarding the lift, you walk to the edge just in time to see a vessel of dark metal, coruscating with azure arcs of lightning! Energy courses along the length of the train, dancing across the pyramid-like stones set into the earth, leaping from one to the next as the train pulls into the station with a shuddering halt. As the lift lurches into motion, a loud siren sounds at the station...

"Never ceases to amaze me!" one of the fellows in the wagon calls out. Everyone upon the lift's eyes are alight with wonder at the sight of the Lightning Rail...

Once it falls still, steps are deployed and hundreds of people begin to deboard the train, milling about on the well-lit platforms (possibly the best lit places of the city that you've seen so far) to gather their bags and belongings before dispersing into the dark streets of Korth. It seems that you are just in time...

As you deboard the lift and move to board the train, you see more of the White Lions in their pale cloaks, polished halberds shining like mirrors as they move along, casually inspecting the passenger carts of the vessel. Your pulse might pick up as they approach, but they mercifully pay you no more than a cursory glance as you climb the steps to your cart and show the uniformed The dragonmarked house of humans who possess the Mark of Travel. Their gifts have allowed them to excel with transit and parcel delivery... as some of them can Teleport across any distance in the blink of an eye.House Orien steward your tickets.

The passenger carts are made up of a dozen or so cushioned benches, made for two people to sit side by side, separated by an aisle. Storage areas line the ceiling above the seats... but a steward waves for you to follow him farther back. A few other passengers, Karrns on their way East, share the compartment but there are many empty seats as you make your way down the aisle. The steward pushes a velvet curtain aside to reveal a narrow walking space with a door to the left or right. It appears that your sleeping arrangements will be somewhat better than they were upon the airship! Pushing open the compartment doors, you find that each "room" will comfortably seat four... with bunks mounted above. A number of small chests can be found beneath the seats for storing personal items.

A steam-whistle blows, the train lurches into motion, and with a collective sigh of relief, Korth is left behind. The gentle rocking of the vessel as it glides across the conductor stones seems intent upon lulling you to sleep. You should take advantage of the opportunity for once you arrive in the Talenta Plains, creature comforts such as these may be few and far between...

GMForgive me, my pacing for this one has been TERRIBLE. To break up a wall of text, I'll deliver you to your destination in the next post! I'm working on it now...

KovaComing down from the skydocks, Kova remarked: "Much like Sharn, not a place for acrophobes. It's a common affliction among halflings, but I overcame mine as a child. Of course having featherfall in my hip pocket doesn't hurt either." Ky, he was certain, was comfortable as a cat at altitude, though he was not so sure about his less fair companion.

The halfling's running commentary continued as they wended their way through the city, stopping only long enough for him to fish out his notebook and pencil when they reached the train. Yammering on about this magical conveyance, he began sketching it, with a focus on where it met the track. Only Ky's gentle but impatient nudge prevented the halfling from climbing down beneath for a closer look at the undercarriage.

Inside the train, Kova seemed a little crestfallen by the mundanity of the rows of seats and isolation from the part of the train that drove it. Nevertheless, his smile returned upon seeing their accommodations. Like an overgrown squirrel, the little wizard scampered up onto the topmost bunk, deposited his pack near the foot of the bed (where his feet wouldn't reach anyway), and stretched luxuriantly. "This will suffice steward! What's your selection of food and wine, and can it be delivered to us here?"

The Lightning Rail"Ahh, the kitchen is not in service at this hour, but I'm sure I can find a few bottles of Aundairian wine and a few loaves of Rangothan Rye, if that suits you." The heavy bread isn't for everyone, but given its remarkable density and depth of flavor, it's a staple in the freezing climes of Karrnath. If that does not hit the spot, at least Aundair is Actually, Aundair is mostly known for fencing and sorcery... but if neither of those are your thing, they have a number of fine wines.known for its wines!

Approaching GatherholdBy the time you awaken in the morning, you can see the grassy expanse that is the Talenta Plains rolling by just outside your window. Those of you that managed to sleep may have been troubled by terrible-but-quickly-fading dreams at some point in the night. Many attribute it to your proximity to the Mournland, but now, with many miles behind you and the sun now rising above the Blade Desert far to the East, it is fast becoming a distant sour memory as the seemingly endless plains unfold before you...

The Talenta Plains! When people of the Five Nations speak of the region, they tell tall tales of gargantuan reptiles and savage, mask-wearing halflings riding bipedal lizards. There is nothing surprising about finding monsters in an untamed region, but the latter seems almost too farfetched to be true. Halfling savages? Riding claw-footed lizards? If you've ever had any dealings with House Ghallanda or House Jorasco, it sounds preposterous. But there is a kernel of truth to it. It was roughly one thousand years ago that Karrn the Conqueror "discovered" the halflings that would become known as House Ghallanda while seeking food, water, and shelter in the Blade Desert during one of his many campaigns to expand his kingdom across the entirety of Khorvaire. Before their dragonmarks made them the exceedingly wealthy and sophisticated captains of industry that most are familiar with, the halflings of the Talenta Plains formed a network of loosely-aligned hunter-gatherer societies which followed herds across the plains in pursuit of food, water, and better grazing.

When the Last War began, both Karrnath and Cyre laid claim to the Talenta Plains, though neither actually made good on their intentions. In fact, as you look out the window of your passenger car, you spot the splintered timbers of several You presume they are Karrnathi, anyway, just from the menacing silhouettes...Karrnathi outposts standing tall over the flat plains, the closest of which has toppled into the grass. They seem to have once been warning towers as they're erected at regular intervals. Such structures were popular during the Last War. Quickly erected and easily abandoned, they were only manned with a handful of sentries who could see for miles around. Fresh horses would have been stabled beneath each tower, ready to carry a rider back with news of approaching forces.

As the landscape continues to slip past, you cast your eyes ahead and spot a large mound covered by grasses and creepers. You can see tiny bipedal lizards darting about the form... and as the train passes, you can make out the unmistakable lines of a Warforged Juggernaut, a massive, blade-fisted construct which struck fear into the hearts of many a combatant during the war... now collapsed in a mangled pile. Such are the remnants of Karrnath and Cyre's claims to this land. Not even the military brilliance of Karrnath nor Cyre's machines of war were enough to conquer the plains...

Shortly after breakfast, rocky outcroppings on the eastern shore of what has to be Lake Cyre come into view. The If only by virtue of being the only known permanent settlement...largest settlement in the Talenta Plains, Gatherhold is a sprawling network of tents and pavilions shared by all manner neighboring explorers, hunters, and halfling tribes as a place to trade, hold celebrations and festivals, and meet for tribal counsels.

"This is the end of the line," the steward says cheerfully as he reminds you to gather your belongings before departing the railcar. Outside of the window, you can see hundreds of garishly colorful tents and striped pavilions of greens, yellows, oranges, and blues sprawling for as far as your eye can see. Halflings in loose-fitting clothes, some of them wearing cuirasses of woven reeds or wearing masks in the likeness of monsters or strange totem creatures, ride about on man-sized, Both in scale and paints, it seems!brightly colored lizards with glittering eyes and wicked, claw-tipped feet. One of them throws back its scaly, ridged head and gives a loud chortling howl that gives you goosebumps.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to Gatherhold!" the steward says cheerfully, swinging the door wide to this strange new world...

GMDon't let me rush you through any RP. If you'd like to converse with each other during your trip on the Lightning Rail, do so. Or we can just pick up in Gatherhold!

Once they were finally moving again, and only then did Ky allow a small mutter and sigh, the expression on her face clear as she glanced at her compatriots, her apparent partners in their adventure. Behave. It was not spoken, but there was no mistaking the narrowed expression and thin pull of her lips. Sometimes one did not need words to get their point across. Thankfully it was, as what seemed almost a regular thing since meeting the little man, Kova who broke the lingering tension. She could not help but smirk at his remark concerning the all too similar dangers. A small wink as he referenced what kept his fear at bay. It was good to know, though in truth she was not as concerned about falling, these heights had become very familiar to her. Let him ramble, it suited her that someone broke the silence and she really did not feel like conversation until they actually were on that rail AND out of this particular stop.

"Kova, the ride is better IN rather than under, you don't have much space left to be cut down any further..." A small mutter as she nudged Kova toward the door of the train as opposed to under it. There were times she was quite sure she was surrounded by morons, sometimes they were capable morons, but still the kind she needed to reign in. Still, it was quite the thing to look at, and if not for a million reasons she could list, she half wanted to see just how this thing worked before she got on. That the inside was simple, boring even amused her further, possibly due to the obvious disappointment Kova had revealed.

As it began to move, to carry them away from that slight tension, from the airship, from... so many places she seemed to finally relax, settle back into the carefree woman. "Wine and rye, a feast of untold flavour hmm Kova, could be worse." Light banter continued as she brought up a list of possible other foods which could be worse, an attempt to just see what kind of faces she might elicit on the others. It was not exactly heaven, but the bread was satisfying, and in all truth she had indeed had far worse to live on in the past.

The end of the line, Gatherhold. Her first impression was just how out of place she had suddenly became. While not in her thieving clothes, still black suited her best, and charcoals and grey still suited her purposes without screaming THIEF, and yet here she had suddenly become a dull shadow amid the riot of colours vomited violently across the landscape. "I feel like I need to fall into a bucket of paint... " A soft mutter to break the shiver which had trickled down her neck as the took in the lizards. Another world, another place with its own secrets and troubles. Still, this was not the time for timid, she had been given a challenge, and by the very one who had drawn her into the Wayfinders, she was not about to let him down. A step off the lightning rail and a small nudge of Kova. "Don't even think about it, stay out from under the train, I need you in one piece."

Half serious, there was still a hint of amusement as she glanced down at him before a measure of seriousness returned. "This time keep your opinions to yourself hmm, we have work to do and no use letting personal hiccups ruining that... so... shall we?"

KovaKova looked up at Ky and could tell she was trying to focus on their venture and which way to go or who to look for. Perfect! This freed Kova up for a quick inquiry into the entire way of life of the plains halflings, his long lost distant cousins! He rushed straight to the nearest masked halfling riding one of the predatory looking reptiles. No need to be shy since surely these riders could control their beasts. "Hello and well met, cousin!" he called out in the language of his people. "That's a fine animal you've got there! What do you call it? What does it eat? Did you buy it or capture it yourself? How long do they take to domesticate? What's the significance of the paint on its scales? Are they bred for war or for work? How fast can it go?...."

Kova's next stop was the nearest stand at which there was hot food to be had. The bread on the train was good and the wine better, but he still had a few corners to fill in and couldn't imagine depriving himself of the opportunity to taste some new delicacy--or some of his old halfling favorites that might have antecedents on the menu of his wild plains kinfolk. "Why this smells delightful! I'll take two, and one of those and one of these... and whatever that is. What's that sauce for? Have you anything good to drink?" Kova was sure to be effusive both with praise and Kova will part with as much as five gold coins for food and drinkcoin. The wizard was also sure to offer his companions a taste.

Kova's third stop was the nearest clothing stall where he sought out a brightly colored tunic and cloak so as to better fit in. "How much for these, friend?"

Having slept through most of your trip on the lightning rail, Doovol stumbles along behind you, rubbing his eyes as he looks about. You are forced to follow the flow of traffic lest you become trampled underfoot upon the rail's platform, though once you are clear of the landing, you are able to step aside and take it all in. The air here is much, much warmer than what you experienced in Karrnath when you boarded the lightning rail, though it is dry and pleasant at this time of the day. As tight-lipped as ever, your hogoblin companion's expressive ears say more than words could possibly convey. As one of the nearby clawfooted reptiles begins sizing up a much more docile herbivore pulling a two-wheeled cart, Doovol's ears lay back and he adjusts his weapons... just in case. In spite of that, however, the hobgoblin seems to stand straighter than you recall in Sharn. Perhaps this is more familiar to his home in Darguun?

"Talentan Translation: "Hee-yah!" A strange name for a reptile, even by Talentan standards.Hai-yaiea!" the masked halfling shouts, and as if to answer Kova's last question, he digs his heels into the clawfoot's flanks and the beast leaps into the air before bounding down the avenue at breakneck speed! Several halfling women balancing straw baskets full of fruits and vegetables hop out of the clawfoots way, but the man-sized raptor-like mount is astoundingly dexterous, avoiding all in its path as the hunter beats a hasty retreat from his inquisitive, cosmopolitan cousin.

"The paint is a tribal marking," a nearby vendor calls from a roadside stall in the common trade tongue spoken through the Five Kingdoms. "Tree Ghost," he explains further, miming brushstrokes that vaguely resemble the leaf-like markings painted on the beast's already-colorful, feathery hide. "May I interest you in some A thick, bitter, dark tea-like beverage that non-halflings have a hard time drinking.Blackroot Taal? Some Lhazaar Coffee for your Talentan: Friendshoa?" he asks as he responds to Kova's "That was a clawfoot. It eats meat. The khaiwa form a special bond with their scaly friends. No one has successfully domesticated any of the beasts of the Plans, wairungi! They are not bred. Quite fast, as you see..."many requests. Even those of you who find yourselves in an alien world recognize the seal upon the vendor's cart: a A blink-dog if you're hip to magical creatures...dog with a long chin-beard in profile, noting that this vendor is an associate of House Ghallanda. The same seal is used in Sharn and all over Khorvaire, and it means that this man's goods meet House Ghallanda's highest, most exacting standards.

Everything Kova desires seems to be within a few steps at one vendor or another's tailgate storefront, and the colorful vendors graciously accept his coin, beaming from beneath their colorful hats and headscarves as they answer his many questions. As he scans for clothing, he spots another vendor standing before a wall of light, brightly colored wraps, hats, head-dresses, and sashes all drifting in the breeze:

"For you, my Talentan: Kinwainunga, a special price. You are wise to not be caught at noonpoutu-anga ill-dressed! The Sunte-akka-ra will bake you like a Potatotawa! I even have the color of Talentan: A dark paste of ashes, tree sap, and dung used to plug holes in cart-beds and leaky cisterns.makka-paru for your lovely friend!"

Kova's generosity with coin seems to have opened the merchant up for friendly banter!Once business has concluded, the young halfling merchant drums his fingers upon the colorful green-and-yellow reeds woven into his waistcoat. "So what brings you to Gatherhold, wainunga?"

Doovol stands behind you, keeping his eyes on the packed-dirt thoroughfare. Although the tents and awnings are tall enough to accommodate taller folk, he and Ky are easily spotted among the sea of halfling peddlers and shoppers.

And although you half-expect him to show up at any moment, there is still no sign of Matz...

And he was off. On one hand, it seemed that Doovol was possibly in a better space, but were was... Dear heart he is going to get himself killed, trampled, or... something... It took all her willpower to not watch Kova, slack-jawed and bewildered. They were not here on a pleasure cruise, they were supposed to meet up with their informants and guides here, they had a job to do and it seemed he had slipped something fun on to the train and was caught up in some hyper induced excitable trance. Her hand rose a moment as if to beckon the halfling back before she decided that there was little point to even attempting such an action. Instead, with a deep sigh of resignation, Ky turned her attention to their surroundings, her gaze swept about to take in the whole place and people, as best as she could.

Somewhere there was someone to meet up with, that would be a good start, but also a slight feel just of how out of place she was there, or more how the whole feel of the place was seemed important. She was, as per usual, outside of her comfort zone, but this was why paying attention to detail was key. "So... if at least one of us can keep focused, guess that might be me..."

Kova"A Ky, there you are! I was wondering where you'd got off to. Did you see the hai-yaiea that Tree Ghost tribesman was riding?? Well, anyway I'm glad I found you! My wainuga here was just about to pour me a cup of Taal--don't mind if I do, my good man!--and he offered perhaps some Lhazaar Coffee for you and Dooval. Care for a cup? You Dooval!?"

"Anyway," Kova continued speaking to his new friend as he donned his colorful garb, took another bite of this delicacy or that, and washed it down with some glorious Taal, "my friends and I are here on business and were looking for a contact of ours. He--or perhaps she--was meant to meet us here and seeing how some of us rather stand out in this crowd,"--at this, Kova shields his right hand with his body from Ky and Dooval as he points at them with his thumb--"it's difficult to imagine they'll miss us. Have you perhaps seen anyone strange around the rail line here? Perhaps they've been asking around about us?" Kova drops a gold piece or two more than he owes into his new friend's hand.
