Rota casts silence and then Deeper Darkness. Halfway through the Deeper Darkness spell she feels a counter spell attempting to dispel the Silence spell but not the Deeper Darkness. The counter fails. Rota feels it, recognizes it was cast through a staff of some kind, a staff of dwarven crafting that the staff wielder cannot use to full effect because they are not dwarven. She remembers from the stories that some of the troll born can see heat in the dark and that all the troll born have highly developed senses of smell.
Rota charges into the tunnel, fearing nothing, ready to fight the troll born mage. She doesn't hear it coming. Rota is twenty feet down the tunnel when she feels slight shifting in the ground, feels pebbles shaking, like from a quake or something large rumbling across the ground. The tunnel is not large, not even ten feet wide in most places and only about fifteen feet high in some. Rota turns a corner, feels heat pushing towards her. She instinctively raises her shield, sees a blur in the darkness, dark blue horns and a wide, reptilian mouth full of sharp, jagged teeth, large enough to swallow her whole!

OOC-Rota roll for initiative and SA Will DC 12. If Rota Sa Will, she is not stunned and can roll to attack, retreat or play dead.

Rota sees the Dragonne suddenly move at her up the tunnel so fast it is a blur. She skids to a stop, pivots and then runs back down the tunnel. She is slightly smiling - interally laughing at herself for thinking that troll born mages would be braver than just a typical mage. And, also for always charging in. This time the charge was maybe a bit foolish. She glances back to see if the great beast will follow her down the tunnel and to see if it even fits....and to see if it is about to try a breath weapon attack on her. There is no where to find cover from that just yet. So hopefully it was just as surprised to see her as she was to see it. So hopefully she reacted more quickly.

When she reaches the room with the others she steps to the side of the tunnel opening. Take cover! she screams at her allies.

Then she casts Earthquake starting precisely 10 feet down the tunnel she just ran up - and from there all the way 80 feet in the direction the tunnel goes to her best guess as to where that third room might be from the layout in her vision. Her aim to collapse the tunnel upon the dragonne and the room beyond it and maybe just luckily take out more enemies. The collatoral damage is possibly terrible - perhaps she just crushed that elf singer. But, she did not see anyone like that in her visions last night. Just Thora was here amongst all these terrors. So, she will have to deal with opening the cage later anyway.

How are we going to get this cage out of here? This is also quite a problem. We can shrink Thora perhaps. Or enlarge the cage. Maybe she can squeeze out. Rota knows some of the elf language. She might even try singing to it.

But, first she is going to slay a dragonne.

--------------------------------

When you cast earthquake, an intense but highly localized tremor rips the ground. The shock knocks creatures down, collapses structures, opens cracks in the ground, and more. The effect lasts for 1 round, during which time creatures on the ground can’t move or attack. A spellcaster on the ground must make a Concentration check (DC 20 + spell level) or lose any spell he or she tries to cast. The earthquake affects all terrain, vegetation, structures, and creatures in the area. The specific effect of an earthquake spell depends on the nature of the terrain where it is cast.

Cave, Cavern, or Tunnel
The spell collapses the roof, dealing 8d6 points of bludgeoning damage to any creature caught under the cave-in (Reflex DC 15 half) and pinning that creature beneath the rubble (see below). An earthquake cast on the roof of a very large cavern could also endanger those outside the actual area but below the falling debris.

Rota feels two things happen at once. Someone wielding a staff, just tried to paralyze her and failed, then she is grabbed and violently shaken back and forth by the thing in the tunnel. Rota can tell it is not a dragonne as she first thought, but a creature known as a Behir. A reptilian creature with many legs like a centipede and body near perfect for slithering and running through caverns. The Behir's teeth grate against her armor, but don't penetrate. She is bashed against the ceiling and then smashed into the wall. She is not dazed, but is bleeding from her chin and knows she will have a multitude of scrapes and abrasions. Her armor though, has held out against the monster's teeth. She is tossed to the side and then trampled before the massive Behir realizes it no longer has a hold of her. Rota uses that moment to roll away, back into the room with Vanwyn and Eiken. Rota lands on her feet, screaming at Eiken and Vanwyn and Thora to take cover as she casts her spell.
The rumbling starts, shaking the foundations of the dwarven mine and bringing grit and chips of stone falling down around them. The Behir coils back towards Rota, shaking and roaring as it looses a bolt of green lightning. Rota stays focused on her spell, guiding the quake to her direction even as the heat from the coming bolt causes sweat to come pouring off her. Rota feels the cavern shake and crumble, enveloping the Behir and everything behind it. Five feet from Rota, the Behir's bolt dissipates as Vanwyn disperses the energy.Due to the dwarven construction, little else, as in her cavern and others are cracked or broken through Rota's guidance, but also due to the dwarven construction, the damage is not as great as Rota may have hoped. Rota collapsed all eighty feet, breaking the ceiling and the floor, but not dropping the rest of the mountain. She hears Eiken let out a gasp and hears the skittering of thousands of small stones and rock chips still falling and tumbling about. Through the dust, she can see the tunnel ahead is collapsed and no longer passable. She also hears the Behir moving about, buried twenty feet away, clawing and chewing on rock as it tries to free itself.
Vanwyn is dusting himself off as he asks,Do we go back the way we came or try another dwarven corridor to the reach the Fjord? Do you think you got the mage in the collapse?

OOC-Rota took 14 points of damage from bruises and scrapes, but has no significant injuries.

Rota answers Vanwyn's question, No idea. She adds as she looks and sniffs around, I could tell he was either approaching or near me in the tunnel. Be wary.

Dice Roll:
1d20+2 (12)+2 Total = 14
trying to spot invisible mage (or she sees him if Odin's eye run still is activated, it lasts one hour)

Rota then thinks about how it might be possible for her to open the cage. It does seem impossible, but there are ideas. She has a very strong greater dispel magic - she can blast the cage and then swing away at it with the magic sword. But, this could possibly kill her based on what Thora described as the ringing deafening death.

Or, she has Etherrealness, she can reach into the cage and take Thora's hand, cast it and then pull her out of the cage. She prefers this idea and thinks about whether or not it would work.

Once she is certain there is no troll mage right there with them, she stashes her spear back into the cylander of spears on her back. She says to Vanywn and Eiken, Take my hand. I am going to make us like ghosts. You will retreat with Thora. Take her to safety. I will go the collapsed tunnel and kill whatever enemies are left. I will meet you where we were dropped off by the Pegasus.

She then pauses and lies, This spell takes me almost a minute of concentration to cast. So, keep an eye out for that troll mage. Rota then just casts Detect Magic. It's a ruse. To lure the troll mage to attack - she is sure if he is able to attack he wouldn't be able to pass up this potential target. They could disrupt her spell - strike while she is concentrating - she's loose the spell perhaps and they would get a surprise attack as well. It would be a crafty move by a mage or really anyone who likes opportunities like this. Rota just has her eyes closed and is waiting to see if anything reacts to her standing there vulnerable.

If her Detect Magic goes off without a hitch, she looks around for that Dwarven staff. If this room is clear, she does actually want to do Etherealness to get Thora out and explains it better to everyone.

Etherealness
Transmutation
Level: Clr 9, Sor/Wiz 9
Range: Touch; see text
Targets: You and one other touched creature per three levels
Duration: 1 min./level (D)
Spell Resistance: Yes
This spell functions like ethereal jaunt, except that you and other willing creatures joined by linked hands (along with their equipment) become ethereal. Besides yourself, you can bring one creature per three caster levels to the Ethereal Plane. Once ethereal, the subjects need not stay together.

When the spell expires, all affected creatures on the Ethereal Plane return to material existence.

Rota looks around, knowing the Odin's Eye has another ten minutes before ending. She watches the dust and grit falling like a soft, gray snow, covering the room, the cage and everyone but Thora. She speaks, still looking, seeing nothing and then closes her eyes to cast her detect magic. The detect magic immediately reveals two things. Within the falling dust is another fog like gas, not invisible, but more like a thin smoke, easily hidden in the dust. It is some kind of spell of sleeping, once they breath too much, they will collapse. She can tell the spell was cast from a wand just before she cast her earthquake spell and it is just now getting to this cavern. The other thing revealed is a great furred serpent. The thing is at least twenty feet long and as thick as her waste. It is using some kind of chameleon spell to hide itself among the rocks alongside the cavern wall. She can see the tongue slowly flickering in and out, smelling her, smelling the others, getting a sense of their place in the cavern. Her detect magic also tells her the snake is not a true snake, but something polymorphed or shape changed to a snake. A creature near perfect for slithering through caverns and collapsed tunnels. The snake is waiting, scenting the air, waiting for a chance to strike. Rota casts her Ethereal spell and the snake's head rises as it loses her scent. The snake can't find them in their ethereal state. Rota touches Thora, then Eiken and Vanwyn in turn and sends them out of the tunnels and to safety.
The great snake has moved, slithering slowly up the part of the broken wall, still scenting the air in an attempt to find them. While she is ethereal, the sleeping fog won't affect Rota, once she becomes normal again though, that will change. She can tell the fog is a fairly powerful crafting. It is not having any effect on the snake. Rota also doesn't know if she can attack with an enchanted spear in this state or not.

OOC-Rota can attack or retreat, or cast spells. She knows from her detect magic she would need to SA fortitude DC 21 to avoid the effects of the sleeping fog.

It is possible for Rota to remain in Ethereal form for just under 20 minutes. She can move up, down, forward or back at half her regular speed - she sort of floats and glides around. She cannot attack anything while in this state - she is immaterial and insubstantial.

She can pass through rock though. And, that's what she does. (double moving each round she can move 30 feet...30x16 minutesx10rounds per minute is 4,800 feet of movement before the spell ends) She passes through the rock heading toward the Fjord waters directly, then she heads East toward the first cave - the one that had the dragonne in a tree near it's entrance. In the vision dream, this is the cave that seemed most dangerous. She scouts out that area and even into sees what she can see if she can reach the cave and go in and take a look around.

OOC: It's hard for me to tell whether or not she can cast something like bear's endurance or death ward or buff spells on herself to prepare for another battle....it seems like it when I read it one way, then it doesn't seem like it if I read it through another way. What do you say?

You become ethereal, along with your equipment. For the duration of the spell, you are in a place called the Ethereal Plane, which overlaps the normal, physical, Material Plane. When the spell expires, you return to material existence.

An ethereal creature is invisible, insubstantial, and capable of moving in any direction, even up or down, albeit at half normal speed. As an insubstantial creature, you can move through solid objects, including living creatures. An ethereal creature can see and hear on the Material Plane, but everything looks gray and ephemeral. Sight and hearing onto the Material Plane are limited to 60 feet.

Force effects and abjurations affect an ethereal creature normally. Their effects extend onto the Ethereal Plane from the Material Plane, but not vice versa. An ethereal creature can’t attack material creatures, and spells you cast while ethereal affect only other ethereal things. Certain material creatures or objects have attacks or effects that work on the Ethereal Plane.

Treat other ethereal creatures and ethereal objects as if they were material.

If you end the spell and become material while inside a material object (such as a solid wall), you are shunted off to the nearest open space and take 1d6 points of damage per 5 feet that you so travel.

OOC-I have always ruled that when dealing with planes and dimensions, a player can cast spells that work in the area(plane, dimension, existence)they are in, but not outside, unless duly noted. Rota can cast spells on herself because she is in the ethereal plane. She would not be able to cast spells on the snake, because it is not on the same plane. She could cast spells on Eiken and Thora and Vanwyn since she has made them ethereal as well. If they were not ethereal, Rota couldn't use spells to aid or harm them. It is a sort of 'like to like' equation.
Now, there are creatures, like ghosts and spectres, who these rules don't apply due to their natures. Enchanted weapons also change the equation. For Rota's spell, her enchanted weapons don't effect foes not on the ethereal plane, because she cast the spell. If Rota was on the prime material, her enchanted weapons could hit a ghost or a spectre or a Mindflayer on another plane due to their enchantment. I hope all that makes sense.

Rota would scout and then cast any number of buffs depending on what she sees. She has a range of buffing spells.... but likely Protection from Evil and Death Ward and Bear Endurance. The first two for the mage and endurance for the dragonne. She will be protected from mind control like Dominate person as well as summoned creatures, plus a bit of a boost to AC. She has no way to fully protect herself against breath weapons, but her saving throws are very high. She will probably cast Purge Invisibility, especially if the room looks empty. She will probably cast Spell Immunity and choose Sleep, Dimensional Anchor, Dispel Magic and magic missile. Those spells will not work on her.

These are Roth’s mage killer spells. This is a test run for how to get close to and fight the Horned Mage.

Rota watches the snake while she accustoms herself to the ethereal state, noticing in particular how the colors are leached out of the world. The huge snake is almost all one color, only the head is a darker gray than the rest. She can't see the dust at all and her hearing at first seemed somewhat muted. Waiting and listening and smelling, she can't smell anything, she figures out that on the ethereal plane or state, sounds differ in tenor and depth. She can hear small pieces of rock moving, sliding against one another, particularly where the Behir is slowly getting crushed to death. Whereas normally those sounds would come across as sharp scraping noises, in the ethereal state they have a much deeper bass sound. High pitches seem almost non existent. The snake's flicking tongue sounds like small drum rattles. Once she feels ready, Rota leaves the room, the snake still scenting for her, and flows through the rock heading out. It doesn't take her long to come across the trapped Behir. The beast is slowly getting crushed, the stones of the fallen tunnel acting like a great constrictor, every time the Behir breathes out then in, it loses ground as the collapsed ceiling slowly crushes down, preventing a full breath. Just ten feet past the Behir, Rota comes across an elf, crushed to death by the falling stone from her earthquake. The elf was carrying a barbed spear and an enchanted, electrified net made of seaweed and blessed by priests of Ran, a giantess of the Sea and wife of Aegir. Rota can tell the net would easily snare any mortal(-6 to SA Reflex)and would have proven difficult even for her with it's shocking power(4d6+2 dam/1d6 str loss). Rota moves past the dead elf and finally, sixty-five feet later comes into a room with a cracked roof and a shaft of sunlight coming through the broken door. Her earthquake spell has cracked the door frame and broken the door in two. Rota sees a tall, heavy shouldered figure sitting in the shadows, just to the left of the door frame. At first it looks human, then Rota sees that one eye, the left eye, is twice as large as the right and the left hand is larger than the right as well. In the smaller right hand, the figure clutches a wand crafted of black oak with runes of lightning and hail carved into the stem. The head of the wand is a piece of copper shaped into a half moon. The larger left hand holds a staff of Rowan wood. She can see bruises on troll born's forehead and left shoulder, where his white shirt has been ripped. He is letting the blood drip freely and has done nothing to staunch or bind the wound. He is waiting, a look of long patience on his face and in his posture. Rota sees him look up and smile at her and slowly say, So you have come. I had not known I would so anger the Hooded One(Odin)in my dealings. If so, I might have chosen a different trade. Have you come to kill me outright or may I bargain for my life?

Rota takes a precious minute and walks up eye to eye with the huge snake while she is in ethereal form, she watches its forked tongue flick out trying to sniff her out. She reaches her ghost hand out to pass over its flat head. I must save you for later.

Rota makes her way curiously through her own destructive path to find the Troll Mage. She walks right through the suffocating behir. She approaches and inspects the elf like creature. It looks like it will be impossible to recover that net. She's surprised to find an elf. She tries to see if it is a dark elf of some sort, but this might not be possible with the shadowy vision in the ethereal plane.

When she emerges from her earthquake zone, she is interested to see the that the troll mage can see her. He is formidable, as she expected. But, her plan has gone satisfyingly well and he is bloodied. To him she replies, and unsure if the troll mage can hear her or not, with an emphasized shrug in her shoulder and says, If you are not in my way, nor an enemy to my people, I have no reason to kill you. You may run for your life and maybe keep your life. I may find you later and you can explain what you wanted to bargain. Or, I may not get around to it. Stay here, then turn on me while I kill that beast, and I will simply destroy you too. Choose your fate. She then points at the wand. That's useless against Odin and his daughter.

She wants him to start to believe she’s immune to sleep spells.

She moves around in this chamber looking for other enemies and out to try to find the dragonne that she spotted yesterday - when it was lingering outside the cave. She looks up and down the cliff and into the sky for it.

Rota measures with her eyes, looking at the net and the distance she has covered, about thirty-five feet from room Thora was held to the dead elf. The elf is shorter than most Rota has seen and is definitely not one of the Nandor or from Alfheim. It could be a drow, it is of the right size and that would fit, but something tells Rota this elf is not drow. Peering closer, Rota sees symbols, druidic symbols, painted with woad on the elf's neck and cheeks. They look gaelic in origin. Rota recognizes one of them as a protection against piercing weapons, swords, spears, arrows and such. Looking further, she guesses this woman may not be elven at all but part fey or all fey. Rota has heard much about the Fey, but has little practical experience with them. That would also fit with what she knows about the Horned Mage. Rota is also now convinced she is a druidess of Ran, a norse giant/goddess, married to Aegir, a norse god of the Sea. Ran and her daughters often trap sailors in nets and drag them down into the depths....

Hievik leans back against the wall, resting and breathing with relief. Rota can tell he was prepared to die, for a fight to the death and now sits in relief not to have that end. She can see him tasting the dust, sees his tongue is pierced with a gold band.Bargain it is then Beorn Queen. I will take my life and leave this place at your bidding. For such a fair and honorable thing, what would you have of me?

Rota answers, I accept surrender. I accept admitting defeat and I let those I defeat run. Should I have to deal with you again, you do not get those options. But, you offer a service and I accept. Where is the elf that sings to the cage? Is she a thrall or an accomplice? How many of these little sea elves will I be facing?

OOC-According to my calculations, Rota has used fourteen minutes of her nineteen minutes of Etherealness

IC-Hievik smiles and sighs, looking up at the ceiling and squinting against the sunlight beaming down. Rota can see a slight trickle of blood forming in his left nostril. A nymph does the singing. She lives in the grove down below, where the land juts into the Fjord. She was most beautiful and ahhh, well not so wise as she thought. The Horned Mage took her with the help of the elven druidess'. Seven she had under her command, seven told in all. Now two are dead, one killed by you just now and the other killed by a Finn, Vilne' they call him, Vilne' Angaamarthon, "the iron of doom," and the Swan slayer for the Horned Mage's maidens think of themselves as Swans.Hievik coughs, sputtering small drops of blood down his chin and wheezes as he breathes, probably from a broken or bruised rib. He slowly wipes his lips then snaps his wrist, trying to get the blood off before it soaks in. These "Sea Elves," Ran's daughter's as you name them, serve the Horn Queen with human like loyalty. The Horned Queen rescued all of them from slavery under the Kievan Rus. Now, they call beasts and men and such to the Horned Queen's service. They called the nymph and then captured her in their nets and held her down, they did, held down sweet Nimloth so the Horned Queen could brand her into service. It is Nimloth who can sing the ancient cage open, not Ran's Daughters.
