Ouzo

"I'll buy you a drink for that one!" Ouzo cheered on Nao, a smile audible in his voice. Though not even in the thick of battle did it escape him that all their drinks had already been paid for. He released his illusions and followed after the dark-clad bounty hunter. Standing next to her, he peered through the veil of bedrolls. "One last demon moth to go and the brawlers are already after it..."

"Mierda!" He shouted, pulling back from the cave's interior. His eyes went wide. He paused for only a moment, thinking through his options. A quick glance at Rhii and Knuddelmaus: "More! In the cave! Ayúdanos!"

Then Ouzo simply reacted: he peeked through the bedrolls once more and raised his arms to cast again. Dammit, he'd at least have to try... With the veins in his neck and backs of his hands straining, he completed the spell: a figure made entirely of flames, not unlike what he conjured for little barber girl. But it left him stumbling -- a hand to grasp onto Nao's shoulder and another braced against his knee, crumpled forward and panting.

Night, 19th of August, 1885.

Wild-eyed, Jie pushed past the barricade, moving quickly but deliberately. With the demon in range he maneuvered carefully where his blade might not struck the man-mountain and swung. His prayer went unanswered by his ancestors which plunged Jie's heart into self-doubt. He could not seem to damage these evil creatures and worried if it was punishment for his failures. His bloody-mindedness then took hold. He die trying to achieve their quest, feeling he'd go to his ancestors with dignity having tried his best to make a difference in the town of his love. After a quick glance over his shoulder he then sprang to the front of the melee, straddling the iron tracks and making the best defence he could. The next wave came on!

Nao trained her sights and gun on one of the few remaining moth demons. Beyond the winged monstrosity, she saw Gerhard and Jie disappear behind the blanket barrier. What are those two doing? Was Gerhard swinging a moth, or was the moth hauling him around? She wanted to go after them but needed to take care of the one in front of her first. Nao squeezed the trigger and fired. Her shot was good, and the small but deadly Japanese woman added another kill to her growing moth body count. ”Yatta!” she exclaimed gleefully. She carefully made her way back to the blanket barrier, peeking beyond to see what was going on.

With a snarl of frustration the minotaur lumbered forward past Ouzo and swept his pistol hand into one of the bedrolls, parting the barrier and stepping up into the mine's mouth. Taking a split second to assess the situation, he trained the giant clockwork revolver straight ahead of him. The good doctor heard the heavy *kachunk* of the barrel turning before an ear-splitting *KRAKOWWW!*

Where once there was a moth charging forward with the others, only empty space remained with two membrane wings fluttering to the ground. The barest movement of Knuddelmaus' head brought his eyes down to where Ouzo was struggling. With a mumbled, "Get up, Doc. Yer embarrassing yerself." the left side of his lips curled up in the faintest hint of a self-satisfied smirk.

Rhii, now emboldened by the unified front forming, darted forward and took up a position directly behind the large minotaur. Using his shoulder as cover, she peeked around and followed his lead, loosing a pixie arrow at the oncoming moths and trusting those in the thick of battle to handle the ones closest. The missile shot forward, streaking light and sparkledust. It impacted the demon true, embedding itself in the white-furred flesh of its thigh, but the moth continued to charge forward!

Li Jie
The moths were falling all around. The air was filled with the cracks of firearm's explosions and whizzing bullets and Jie was in one of the most dangerous situations of his life! Both himself and Gerhard were being overwhelmed by the oversized insects; their wings fluttering about their persons creating visceral compulsions to shriek and flail ones arms about until they just went away.

Jie was in the battle dance and his dao slashed over and again in circular arcs, the bright blade flashing in the firelight. He imagined the fire as the bane of these creatures and envisaged his sword as having a flaming blade. 'Was this a vision or was it my own mind creating the image?' he thought wondering whether the flames of the Ghostworld might be another of Yama's divine powers. He focused on one of the moths that had injured him and brought the blade across its trunk, slicing a fine line into the demon. The curved blade kept its motion and the demon's ichor spewed onto Jie and down onto the tunnel floor.

"At last..." he grunted with satisfaction.

Nao almost instantly regretted peeking behind the curtain of blankets as yet more moths had arrived and were closing fast! Gerhard was indeed swinging a moth around, though Nao definitely wouldn’t recommend it as a good weapon. She let out a short bark of a laugh when Ouzo offered to buy her a drink. ”So generous! I’ll be sure to take you up on it!”

Things happened in quick succession. The moths dove forward and were met with gunfire and sparkle. Nao hurriedly raised her rifle to add her shot to the fray, but as she pulled the trigger, Gerhard smashed his improvised moth-flail into the demon Nao was aiming for and her shot just barely missed. She found it hard to be annoyed, however, when the giant made such a good shield.

A spray of demon blood caught her attention and she saw that Jie had finally been able to land a blow. ”Keep it up, Jie! I will sing your praises in battle for your lady when we return!” Nao grinned and poked her head and gun around Gerhard, searching for her next target.

Ouzo
right-aligned image
Peeking through the bedrolls, Dr. Ouzo finally produced from his duster a firearm of his own. He leveled the semiautomatic pistol at one of the moths -- the one furthest from him, not engaged with any others -- and narrowed his eyes.

"Magicks spent. Illusions made. Lungs and muscles drained. Enemies still fluttering about. Ambush spot compromised..."

This was not how Dr. Ouzo preferred to work at all. One hand absently clenched at the bedroll barrier as one more gunshot rang out amidst the chaos. A faint but satisfactory splurt could be heard (or so he imagined) from the other side of the conflict as the bullet tore through flimsy carapace and bug guts and flimsy carapace again.

Somehow, it did little to put the conman at ease. His jaw remained set.

Gerhard clapped a large hand to the fresh bite wound. "Pokker! Schützerin, bleibst du mir hintern!" The scores that had been raked across his body were a stark reminder that he was far from a familiar setting. The curved blade kept its motion and the demon's ichor spewed onto Jie and down onto the tunnel floor. "At last..." he grunted with satisfaction.

The ichor was followed closely by the demon itself, landing in a lifeless heap at the prospector's feet!

Seeing Gerhard had been injured several times with a fair amount of severity, Rhii stowed her longbow and cautiously approached the giant. With the only immediate threat firmly gripped in his fists, she felt confident enough to reach out and lay a tiny hand on him, imparting some of her fae healing magicks. A gentle light emanated from her fingertips and Gerhard regains 13 Health!flowed into Gerhard. After a few seconds the flow brightened and the pixie's brow furrowed, Rhii fails her Fatigue test, becoming Winded!sweat immediately beading. She seemed to have trouble ending the effect and withdrawing. It took a few more moments, but finally she ripped her hand off Gerhard's should and backed away, panting heavily.

Knuddelmaus, witnessing the battle quickly turn back in favor of his charges, once again steps back and keeps an eye on the proceedings. With no open targets and no one in serious danger, he falls back into babysitting mode and simply watches.

With their numbers dwindled down to near extinction, the moths cannot ignore the fact that their meals have more teeth than they do! The two not completely hindered turn to flee, Moth #8one into the night and the other back the way it came. Moth #1The final demon struggled vehemently to break free of Gerhard's grasp, doing anything within its power to escape certain death. The jötunn retains his control over the monster as it's unable to escape his clutches!

Ouzo catches his breath. Where to from here?
right-aligned image
With the remaining moths either fled or about to be torn to little-moth-bits by a giant twice over, Ouzo did not attempt to give chase, but rather went to the campfire and put it out with any gravel and dirt on hand. Then he leaned against a nearby wall of roughhewn earth, still breathless. "A clever trick indeed... to draw them out on our terms... But if they only hunt in swarms... perhaps it best to not light them anymore beacons?" He'd been gesturing casually with his pistol as he spoke, something that a more experienced gunman might find wildly uncomfortable, until he tucked the firearm back into his duster and fished around for something else. Another smoke. Which he lit up immediately.

Not wanting to be alone by even a few paces, much less as spent as he was, Dr. Ouzo rejoined the others at the mouth of the mine.

"We perform famously together, por supuesto!" A nearly half-filled bottle of dark, sloshing liquid found its way out of Ouzo's satchel, which was quickly sampled then offered to be passed around. "A rest should be ample reward to ourselves. I've, ah, not had to cast so much within a single moment before and I'm afraid it's left me rather useless. To be fair, I suppose I've never had to outwit bugs before. Usually those tricks of the eye are planned in advance or just for a smooth getaway. Like a discarded gun or stick of dynamite, to lure away whatever ambitious depu- ah, a brigand. Or, you know, the odd wheelbarrow full of cash. Or a wall where would otherwise be a doorway," he grinned at Nao, thinking back to the first time they'd crossed paths.

If the party did agree to rest, Ouzo would feel a pang of worry as he found that the only provisions he packed included whiskey, tobacco, and playing cards. That is, until he remembered the hardtack and jerky salvaged from their predecessors' pack, that Knuddelmaus sniffed out in the dark. Knuddelmaus. As much as Ouzo enjoyed poking the bull, as it were, it seemed his most recent prank poked a but further than expected. Reclining on the ground with his satchel as a pillow, the swarthy human almost offered up some of his jerky to the minotaur as a gesture of peace, before reflecting on the optics and deciding against it.

Ouzo spent the rest of the time asking Jie to tell some of his ghost stories ("Jie! Jie! What's that one with the spirit of the cheesemaker, the elephant noises, and the floating chair? Tell that one again!"), offering to play obscure and somewhat-underhanded-sounding card games ("Say, Gerhard, you ever heard of Einwerfen? Well, there's another version called Sueca, but the rules are a bit tricky, so you'll just have to trust me that when you draw your first pair after your second face card..."), and generally smoking, drinking, and fidgeting about.

As the bottle of liquor depleted to its last quarter, Ouzo thought out loud: "So... do we return to His Baronship, having slain these moths? Or do we explore that collapsed side-passage? Those corpses presenting lacerations and clean severances suggested some cause of death besides demon-moth proboscis. As if the moths only eat the living, or fresh tissue, and someone - or something - else got to them first..." He was still laying on his back, as if innocently stargazing. And daydreaming. Or nightmaring, more like. "Heh, with our luck, it's the missing forewoman and her boyfriend, thinking to elope with a wedding gift to themselves of stolen Hellstone, only to have mutated into some poetically twisted version of themselves. More bugs, no doubt. Praying mantises, with great razors for forearms, to explain the cuts. Ugh..." He shivered at the thought.

Ouzo makes good with Knuddelmaus...?Only once they'd begun to pack up their short rest did Ouzo step aside to their escort, Knuddelmaus. He'd been trying to figure out how to best make good with the looming minotaur after the illusion debacle, and after giving it much thought, Dr. Ouzo decided it best to try lying directly to Knuddelmaus' face. "I want to apologize to you, Mr. Knuddelmaus," a gentle hand outstretched as if to be lain upon the minotaur's arm, but stopped just short of making physical contact, as if casually teasing the thought of it. "For the illusion, earlier. The truth is, ah, somewhat embarrassing I am afraid. Emabrassing to me twofold. You see, I wasn't entirely in control of how those illusions manifested. These magicks," he shrugged and offered his open palms upwards, as if to gesture at the nothingness in his hands. Then his voice lowered and slowed, leaning more into its naturally coarse hush. "At least, as I was taught these magicks, well, they come from a place deep within the self. From the part of the mind where one's impulses dwell. And one's dreams. And fixations..." His words tapered off there, just barely leaning in as he visibly peered over each of the shelves and ridges that made up the hide of Knuddelmaus' face.

Then Ouzo pulled back and spoke matter-of-factly: "A symptom of sorts, presenting unsolicited in situations of great stress, as Breuer's cathartic method would have it... if one cares to believe such untested theories," he almost chuckled. Then his voice slowed again, to an earthen coo laden thick in his Andalusian accent: "... Like so much soot building up in a chimney that it cannot wait to be swept and instead simply sweeps itself. Es la que tu me haces... that is to say, I think could not help myself but to envision, and am sorry, Knuddelmaus. I am grateful for your company and I would never allow such a thing to be seen were the means so available otherwise." He finished with a soft furrow of his brow, looking upwards at the ever-frowning minotaur.

Somewhat behind his person due to how he was standing now, the still-lit cigarette between his fingers continued to stream its thin, wispy trail of smoke.

It was almost a let down when the last remaining moths turned tail and ran for their lives. The job felt unfinished somehow. Still, it was good to take a breather. Ouzo had quite a good idea to put out the fire, though his gesturing with his weapon made Nao’s hair stand on end and she let out a sigh of relief when he had safely holstered it. ”Hai, I’ll drink to that.” Nao replied when Ouzo remarked on their teamwork. She took a swig from the bottle and gratefully accepted some jerky, chuckling softly at Ouzo’s mention of their first meeting, returning his grin with a flirtatious wink.

”Rhii-donno, if possible, could you see to my arm? I realize you have used some of your energy and Jie could use your assistance as well. Perhaps just a bandage will do?” She smiled hopefully at the small fae, because truthfully, now that the excitement was wearing off the bite hurt.

Once her arm was attended to as best as possible she sat with the others, enjoying time to rest. ”Does anyone know what happened to the chocolate covered cherries? I’ve been wanting to try Barca Brother’s forever!” She made herself comfortable and rested with the others while cleaning her gun and listening to Jie’s outrageous ghost story. Although highly entertained, she did keep part of her attention open to the group’s surroundings. She didn't want them to be on the receiving end of an ambush!

Another source of entertainment was Ouzo buttering up Knuddlemaus, which Nao regarded with wide-eyed amazement. She knew exactly what he was doing. She had seen the same behavior in some of the samurai retainers of her family. She just couldn't believe the illusionist was so brazen. He was either going to have a new intense love interest or offend the minotaur beyond all saving. She rather hoped he succeeded, not only because such a relationship would be highly amusing but also because the group really couldn't afford to lose the support of their babysitter. Losing Ouzo to an angry minotaur charge would probably not be good either. Nao snickered into her drink.

When talk turned to what to do next, Nao chimed in. ”I agree with Ouzo. It feels like there are more demons than just the moths. We didn’t even get that far into the mine and still don’t know what caused some of the miners to go insane.” She shivered, ”I certainly hope it’s not a mutated person but many demon myths from my homeland involve humanoid, intelligent beings. The moths were dangerous, but not particularly bright. A large enough posse should have been able to deal with them but so far none have succeeded. It makes me think there is something else here. I would rather explore more; the job does not feel complete.”

Li Jie. Late Afternoon, 18th of August, 1885. Yellow Ledge, Western Protectorate.

Li Jie
The fight was over, and, with it, the time for sobriety. Jie took the bottle from Ouzo before he had a chance to finish it. "Dry mouth… ah! If you want a story…"

Remembering the job Ouzo referred to, they’d discovered the cheesemaker did not share the same heaven as Jie… or Ouzo for that matter. This required some post contract drunken philosophy between Jie and Ouzo. They mused and drank until it made sense. Then woke having forgotten their complex unravelment. What remained though, was the correct assumption that they’d understood the man, his departing spirit and that they’d solved the problem for their client.

"Dr. Ouzo and I were hired to investigate an abandoned cheesemaker’s workshop. The new owners of the house alongside weren’t sleeping for the strange noises. That night you thought they sounded like and elephant’s trumpeting!" He clapped Ouzo’s shoulder with a fleshy hand. The booze had loosened Jie’s laugh after the stress of the moth fight.

"The cheesemaker’s ghost had brought his chair back to where he’d sat upon a removed platform. There it floated a foot above the ground where the man had sat in life, for guilt, over the hidden and unhallowed bones of his child. Had the child been murdered? Bastard offspring..? We don't know. In any case it was the reason for the man’s spirit to remain. The child’s remains had lain underneath that platform… and someone had removed the wood and bones. We followed the trail," he waved and rolled his mad eyes indicating his sight into the ether, "In the end we brought the priest, buried the child and the cheesemaker left."

Jie leaned in for the tale’s end, "The sound was the poltergeist turning the screw of the old cheese press!" Jie hadn’t said so much in days but now, having had a taste, thought it would be perfect if they were back in the Saloon in Yellow Ledge celebrating. ’He’d have more to say there!’ he smiled.

Jie rested, watched the others on their various rest activities. He watched the interaction between Ouzo and Knuddelmaus wondering what would come of it. Although he realised the Niútóu could break the Spaniard between thumb and forefinger, his friend seemed tender towards him. He half smiled and dozed for a minute, listened to Nao and considered what to do next.

He suddenly remembered the Barca Brother’s chocolate covered cherries and, removing them from his satchel, popped one in his mouth before passing them around. He let the chocolate melt in his mouth before squeezing the juicy fruit between his teeth. A warmth flowed through his body and he fully realised that the cherries had some arcane power! ’Wonder upon wonder in this strange land!’ he thought.

He nodded to Nao and grunted his concurrence. The contract was not finished until all traces of the demons were found and slain. The thought of Mr. Croup and a hierarchy lingered in his mind. Jie’s great curiosity motivated him to try to find out why and where the moths had come from.

”Rhii-donno, if possible, could you see to my arm? I realize you have used some of your energy and Jie could use your assistance as well. Perhaps just a bandage will do?”

The pixie nodded and hovered to a nearby rock where she plopped down and re-asserted her longbow over her head and one shoulder. "Yes, yes. Just let me catch my breath." Rhii was panting heavily after the toll of healing the extra-large Gerhard's significant wounds. "It all happened so... fast. I've never..." She refrained from finishing the sentence, letting her naivety regarding violence remain unsaid. After After a 5-minute rest Rhii:
-is no longer Winded!

a few minutes the color had returned to her face and she approached the yokai hunter.

Withdrawing her medicinal implements Rhii poked and prodded a bit at the gashes across Nao's arm. Her brow furrowed and she said something no one understood, but sounded like a curse. "Nár eirigh an lá leat... Rhii failed her First Aid test!I don't think I can treat you with the materials at my disposal, Hunter Nao. Cactus flower works wonders on maladies of the blood, like the poison of the snake," she looked askance at Jie, indicating his recent run-in with the weeping rattler's venom, "but for staunching blood and knitting skin we'd fair much better with the purple flower of the black oak... or the downy morel. But perhaps..." She seemed to ponder a decision for a few moments before resting her small hands on either side of Nao's wounds. Closing her eyes, she once more called out to her homeland for healing. Nao's arm became Rhii successfully casts Healing Touch! (1PP)

awash in a soft glow as the cuts sealed shut and scabbed over in a matter of seconds. This time Rhii was able to withdraw before exhausting herself.

She smiled, satisfied with her work. "There we go." Turning to the prospector Rhii prepared to make another attempt, although he seemed content to ingest the infused concoction of cherry, chocolate, and magicks. Instead returning to her rock with a shrug, the fairy assumed a meditative posture and After a 4-hour rest Rhii recovers all of her FA!focused on restful thoughts, banishing the fatigue that came with summoning energy from the fae-realm.

In response to the discussion of what to do next and Nao's feeling of unfinished business Knuddelmaus spoke up. "The deadshot's right. We ain't done here." From his spot leaning against one of the support posts that led into the mine he met everyone's eyes to press the importance of his words. "Can't go back to Slatterbaugh until we've cleared every square foot of this mine. But it looks like most of you can handle yourselves. We should be okay to take another crack at it." The comment was high praise coming from Slatterbaugh's surly soldier. Settling into his standing lean, the minotaur kept an eye on the camp and seemed to take in the stories being told and the games being played. Not enough to appear entertained, but enough to not ignore them outright.

Surprisingly enough he did accept one of the cherries, and even commented. "Barca Brothers is good people." Popping the sweet into his mouth lightened his visage into what was undoubtedly the most enjoyment ever witnessed on the minotaur's face thus far. And they were delicious! Li Jie, and everyone that accepted his offering, were treated to an exquisite chocolate shell that melted around a ripe, sweet cherry bursting with juice. All of your taste buds lit up at once with the flavors. It was actually quite odd that something could taste this good.

The dark hours of the night passed with Nao and Knuddelmaus keeping their eyes and ears open for any signs of disturbance, but none made themselves known. By the time Dr. Ouzo and Rhii felt revitalized they guessed the witching hour had just passed. The first hint of dawn was still a couple hours away, and all was still in the ravine...

When Dr. Ouzo found a moment alone(ish) and approached Knuddelmaus, the minotaur at first seemed wholly uninterested in the Spaniard's apology. He glowered down at the man in much the same manner as when he first saw the embarrassing illusion.

"From the part of the mind where one's impulses dwell. And one's dreams. And fixations..."

As Ouzo's eyes roamed up the bovine's face his light brown, almost orange eyes slowly widened into an expression so alien on his face it was almost laughable. Knuddelmaus seemed utterly shocked to his core and stood there, frozen. A statue of disbelief. Whether it was due to rage or flattery or pure surprise was unclear. Based on the look about him he could just as likely to kiss Ouzo as pound him into a pile of human jelly.

"I am grateful for your company and I would never allow such a thing to be seen were the means so available otherwise."

By the time the doctor had finished Knuddelmaus hadn't moved a hair. He remained with his eyes locked onto Ouzo, very nearly bulging out of his head. Finally, after many seconds, he found a voice, although it didn't seem to be his. Dry and cracked, he eked out a few stuttered words. "I... ahh... Yes." There was no question asked of him, though he repeated the word as if it made some kind of sense. "Yes." With the conversation apparently over, or perhaps wishing it so, Knuddelmaus took a few stilted steps away from Ouzo and jerked his revolver out of its holster, attempting to clean it or cycle through its chambers or... it wasn't exactly apparent what he was doing other than look busy.

Meanwhile the mouth of Mine Twelve remained half-closed with a few bedrolls. It's darkness beckoning the party to venture inside once more and plumb its depths for the secrets that had led to so much debt, despair, disappearance, and death...

@Niyaga as the first one to take a bite, Li Jie gets to enjoy the mechanical benefits of the chocolate covered cherries. This item was a one-shot, kind of like a potion of healing, so not everyone gets to heal damage but I didn't want to deprive you of the scene where everyone got to taste them!

Knuddelmaus' Attitude increases to ??? based on your combat abilities!

The Mine

When Rhii said she didn’t have the required supplies to heal her arm, Nao was slightly alarmed. She did not relish the thought of wandering around in a dangerous mine with a bleeding wound, but the little fae was able to heal her wound with some sort of magic, which amazed and gratified Nao. Even though she was a shapeshifter herself, she still thought of magic as a rare, sometimes wonderful, sometimes terrible gift. ”My thanks, Rhii-donno.” Nao said, giving a little bow.

Hearing Knuddlemaus give her the nickname “Deadshot” made Nao feel a swell of pride. Hopefully they could hold their own against whatever else the mine threw at them. The chocolate covered cherries Jie passed around were heavenly. Nao savored them, firmly fixing the name Barca Brothers in her mind in case she came across such goodies again. If even the stoic minotaur was impressed with them, they might be worth looking up as well.

Seeing their babysitter so flummoxed by Ouzo brought Nao a surge of mischievous glee. She surreptitiously made a sexual hand gesture at the foolhardy Spaniard and then gave him a thumbs up. She sobered as she looked back at the mine entrance, however.

”So what is the plan this time comrades? The ambush worked in our favor but I’m not sure it can be repeated. These moths seem cowardly, so rushing them all at once could be an option, though I personally am not suited for close combat. My strength, as you could see, is in picking off things at a distance. There’s also the question of what else might be in there. Should we go in formation like last time or some other order?” She looked around at the others, seeing if they had any ideas.

Night, 19th of August, 1885. Mine - Gerhard Eisenhand

ᛖᚾᛁᚷᛗᚨᛏᛁᚲᚨᛚᛁ expressionless, Moth #1Gerhard held the moth he'd turned into an impromptu weapon between his hands. The subtle tingle of the Rhii heals Gerhard for 13 HPbutterfly-girl's magic stitching his flesh back together was, compared to similar experiences, greatly unsettling. Where her power was gentle like a breezy whisper across the underside of his skin, the experiences he was more familiar with were akin to a bolt of lightning striking one's body. The result was ultimately the same, albeit one remained vastly more preferential over the other. Shaking his head to banish the unsettling feeling, Stunt: Break WeaponGerhard impassively brought the moth stretched between his hands down as he sharply brought his knee spiking up into its spine. Moth bending unnaturally around a bulge in it's sternum, its struggles end sharply with a dull, cracking pop. Slinging the wretch over his shoulder perfunctorily, Gerhard looks around the area and takes in the results of their skirmish.

These particular demons clearly had some quirks that could be exploited. Fire, perhaps light more generally, seemed to command their attention in a manner similar to more natural moths. Yet they seemed to act in groups more akin to bats or a swarm of bees or wasps. What exactly they fed upon was still moderately unclear but they were assuredly predatory. 'perhaps their predatory nature could be leveraged to our advantage? If they are attracted to light, or light and heat, what would they do if tempted with something resembling their prey? Safe to assume they are carnivorous, after one fashion or another... thought Gerhard as he gathered up a number of the corpses. Dragging one by the feet he moved closer to Jie and slung it before both of them and nudged it with his toes. "You are expert. What you make of them Chinaman? We succeeded this time but we need a better approach. Need to be more efficient. Unless you think we can turn the Schützerin's rifle into the mainstay of going further?"

"Say, Gerhard, you ever heard of Einwerfen? Well, there's another version called Sueca, but the rules are a bit tricky, so you'll just have to trust me that when you draw your first pair after your second face card..." Gerhard let loose a barking whoop of a laugh. "Nej. I see how you make the eyes deceive. Won't be able to trust how many Asen and Zehner we really playing with. Besides, I have more coin than you. What need have I for gambling?" Gerhard's tone was genuinely playful, despite the barely concealed barb. The slechtaard had done well in the battle, and for that he deserved some respect. Ragnar still didn't trust the man however. Politely declining any of the cherries being passed around, his thoughts turned to the camaraderie developing among them. Ouzo and Jie obviously had some past history and could be relied on to know how to fight well together.

"So what is the plan this time comrades? The ambush worked in our favor but I’m not sure it can be repeated. These moths seem cowardly, so rushing them all at once could be an option, though I personally am not suited for close combat. My strength, as you could see, is in picking off things at a distance. There’s also the question of what else might be in there. Should we go in formation like last time or some other order?" Gerhard raised his head at hearing Nao's voice and he rumbled and responded to her himself. "Whatever else we might do, you should stay behind me. I might not to do much but I can be wall for you at least. Maybe tap back if you want me kneel down to use my shoulder to steady your aim. Oder; if rails go where demons are, you can bunker in that and I push or pull you deeper. Should be a little castle for you!"

"Ja, ich weiß. Das Gestank es richtig stark. Mit stolz, bitte..." Gerhard murmured quietly to his goatish mount as it made an unmistakable sound of protest as he loaded up several of the demon moths' corpses. Aside from the pragmatism of taking at least some corpses back with them as proof of having at least exterminated some of what they had been assigned to exterminate, there were other considerations on Ragnar's mind. One such concern was the biology of these particular creatures; from a purely practical standpoint some closer examination of them was warranted in order to have a more efficient fist of engaging them later. 'However many remain in the mines, and whatever may or may not be driving them, I doubt that today's efforts are sustainable in the long run. Too many injuries and too much reliance on that slechtaard Ouzo's trickery. Effective but obviously too taxing for an ongoing battle. Fastening the corpses down he gave them another glance. If any questions were asked it wouldn't be difficult to claim that they only needed so many for proof and examination, hence leaving some behind. Mixed in however were a few extras that he needed to find, or bargain, some way of getting to Captain Anneke. Despite her reluctance to ferry him individually, she had been forewarned that some packages from Gerhard might be sent her way to be surreptitiously and safely delivered back to Tyskland. There would be few chances to send such a complete specimen, even a lowly one such as this, and duty demanded every effort of him.

Li Jie
’We ain’t done here.’

Jie agreed with the Niútóu’s assessment. There was nothing for it, they needed to continue deeper and check that Slatterbaugh’s mine was free of its demon taint. Jie was compulsively driven to gain control over and banish demons wherever he found them and he felt sure they’d find more. Possibly a type that enjoyed power over the dumb moths.

’So what is the plan this time comrades?’

Nao was echoed by Gerhard and he gave some good opportunities to keep her safe while letting her shoot from cover. So far she’d been the mainstay of the group’s offensive capabilities. He looked down at his dao with a slight sneer of disdain. Once again he had a vision of a flaming blade which made him think of one way to proceed.

"Build a fire in the cart. Push it ahead. I’ll walk in front." Jie indicated one forward flank of the cart so that he’d be right there, blade in hand, when anything appeared. He intended to be forward of Gerhard, with Nao, Ouzo, Knuddlemaus and Rhii behind. He’d have Yama’s protection and could fend off any moths that appeared. He also planned to imprison anything more dangerous with deeper arcana.

He thought of making a torch by tearing some strips of cloth from the bedrolls and winding them around some of the broken crate wood. He’d do that if the burning cart idea wasn’t accepted by the group. He could then cast it away on contact with more demons and ask Rhii for her mogwai lights so as to be able to see. In any case, he decided it best if he was in front, where he could keep the rest of the group safe.

Ouzo

With the minotaur turning away, seemingly overcome with bashfulness, Dr. Ouzo gave a melodic if not entirely throwaway "Hmm..." before turning back to the others. They were sorting out the plan to continue into the mines: hunting the one remaining demon moth as well as exploring the collapsed side passage, by the sounds of it.

Their plan was certainly tailored to their prey. Amusing for its novelty, if nothing else. If there were any non-moth culprits in the mines, particularly any with a shred of sentience, then their flaming-minecart-lure would make them an easy ambush target. The conman-illusionist thought through how an illusion attached to the minecart itself might help foil any ambush... but nothing immediately came to mind. The others were leading the way and so he'd be content enough to follow, pistol drawn. And from just beyond their rolling firelight, of course.

Ouzo packed up his gear and glanced over to Nudillos to ensure the great beast was safe too. Nothing chomping on him. Couldn't have been bothered at all, it seemed. For the best. Ouzo took the last puff of his smoke before it was entirely worn down, then looked at the remains of its filter, almost intimately, held inches from his face: "Wish me luck, my loves. Until we meet again..." Then it was tossed unceremoniously aside before he exhaled all his smoke and fell in line.
