From atop her rocky perch, Nao finally spotted an opening in the cave-in. Not only that, she could hear Jie and… She sucked in a sharp breath. ”Jie’s alive and Mr. Croup is getting away!” she yelled. She wasn’t sure if the others understood what she meant but she didn’t have time to explain. Diving through the hole, her small size worked to her advantage this time, and she rolled out the other side in a spectacular display of dust and stylish tumbling, almost like a human explosion. She rose to her feet and unslung her rifle in one smooth motion, all her anger and frustration now channeled into focusing on her target. Her teeth were bared in a ferocious grin as she set her sights on Mr. Croup and pulled the trigger.

Ouzo
right-aligned image
Seeing Nao dive through an opening in the rubble, Dr. Ouzo went after her. It'd be more than just a reprieve from the manual labor of lifting rocks; Jie seemed to be involved in some sort of commotion on the other side.

The slender conman Ouzo rolls a 15 to climb through the opening. Success!followed the dark-clad bounty hunter through just as gracefully. There was Jie - with a woman atop him? Ouzo paused mid-crouch atop the rocks. One wily eyebrow craned upwards; a suggestion of something ungentlemanly in the scene unfolding before them. But when Nao immediately raised her rifle and fired, Ouzo's instincts returned.

There. The suit-clad demon. "It's you...?!" He went to fling his arm outwards, picturing the intended spell. Nevermind illusory shadows. A cube of pure white to encase Croup, hopefully concealing Jie (and the rest of them) from whatever they had planned...

... but Ouzo rolls a 9 on Initiative. Too slow!his sleeve caught, for just a moment, on a pointed rock he thought he'd dodged over. He glanced at the rock that held him with a sneer; a break in his devil-may-care façade. His arm was still at his side. He wasn't fast enough with his magic.

Still fussing with his sleeve in a panic, his Ouzo rolls a 16 on Deception to convince that Jie has a stick of lit dynamite on him! If successful, he generates 1 SP! If failing, he auto-rerolls with his Intrigue Talent for a 19 and 0 SP!treacherous instincts took over, playing off of his stalled advance with an unnecessarily projected shout: "Lookout, Nao! Jie lit his other dynamite! He's about to blow!"

Li Jie. Late Afternoon, 18th of August, 1885. Yellow Ledge, Western Protectorate.

Li Jie
Jie fought with all his might. He wanted to be free of this woman's grip. She smelled so bad and was crazier than he ever thought he'd be! 'Was she an ordinary woman who had been captured and used as a play thing by Croup? That would be a fate worse than death!' He cursed the dapper demon as a being of pure evil but felt an unwelcome sympathy for the woman should this have been the case.

Just then he heard the distinctive sound of Nao's rifle! His heart leapt in gratitude. Then he heard Ouzo too, "Lookout, Nao! Jie lit his other dynamite! He's about to blow!" Jie frowned as he checked holds and fought to regain his limbs and turned to check for dynamite. 'No, he'd used that hadn't he? What was the spaniard up to now?! A gambit?' Jie hoped it worked in some fashion as he could not break the woman's grip. Her insanity drove her to strength which he couldn't equal!

He only managed to roll onto all fours and press up while trying to shake her free. 'Croup is getting away!' Although the demon was wicked to its core, Jie knew he could learn so much from it. He growled loudly with exertion and frustration!

Pre-Dawn, 20th of August, 1885.

So many things happened and in such quick succession it would have been near impossible for anyone to keep track of it all...

As Nao and Dr. Ouzo tumbled through the narrow opening in the rubble they were greeted with the same sight, though they settled on two very different courses of action. The Japanese demon hunter immediately focused on the suit-clad demon at the end of the hallway. Though unfamiliar to her it wasn't a stretch to assume this was Mr. Croup. Nao immediately unslung her rifle and fired, barely pausing to line him up in her sights. The crack rang through the hall that separated them from him...

Meanwhile the good doctor, after struggling and failing to manifest an illusion for their target, focused on Li Jie and the woman atop him. A dirty, disheveled woman. Light skin was made darker by dirt, soot, and all manner of uncleanliness caked into her pores. Her hair might also have once been fair, but now lay stringy and clumped about her head and face. A pair of overalls covered her body with a simple shirt underneath, both were stained to near-black with a similar amount of filth as her skin.

The ruse that came to Ouzo's lips was plausible enough, based in a nugget of truth, and delivered with just the right amount of conviction. The woman, however, was having none of it. She continued to squirm on top of the prospector, grabbing freed limbs, writhing this way and that, keeping him underneath her. In fact, nothing swayed her attention. Ouzo's Deception test fails! The woman seemed possessed of a singular purpose...

For Jie's part, it was clear he was Li Jie fails the opposed grapple test!flailing helplessly. The woman was either too wily or to committed to give him any kind of opening to free himself...

right-aligned image
After Nao's rifle-shot echoed across the chamber, those that peered around the large brass statue could see Mr. Croup, he had been spun sideways to his left and stood bent at his waist. Nao deals 18 damage to Mr. Croup!!The shot had found its mark. Not only that, the feathers of the calm and collected entity had been thoroughly ruffled. His slicked hair hung down in front of his face and his head whipped up to glare at Nao, unbridled malice in his gaze. It might not have surprised anyone if liquid flame had erupted from his eyes and consumed the woman where she stood. But that did not happen. He slowly rose and turned to face the trio of contracted mercenaries. It was then that And anyone else who looked in his direction.Nao noticed something off. Everything about him was so dark it was hard to tell demon from shadow, but his suit... was it torn to tatters? No, the shoulder simply... ended. His entire left arm was missing! What bits of bone remained of the socket protruded into empty space and spurted blood just as black as his skin.

left-aligned image
It was unclear how he would react. He didn't seem to be in pain, at least it didn't register on his face if he was. Fury seemed to be a main ingredient of whatever his response was about to be until, in the span of an eyeblink, he seemed to regain control of his unchecked rage. Mr. Croup's snarl turned into a sadistic smile and, after Hard TN15 PER (Seeing) test
doing something with his feet that was blocked by the statue's base, he made sure the bag he was carrying was still secured on his person before offering a gentlemanly bow and some parting words, "Until we meet again!" He then leapt backwards through the swirling vortex that ostensibly lead to Zone Demonika.

As if the events of the last few seconds weren't enough, Croup's disappearance was followed by two more occurrences. The first being the woman atop Jie stopped fighting with him. Her eyes rolled into the back of her head and she fell limp onto the prospector. The second occurrence related to the demon portal, in that the doorway quickly reduced in size. As it folded in on itself a noise filled the air; the whooshing of air accompanied by a ringing or buzzing sound. And a burning smell, though not the same sulphurous scent they encountered upon entering this place. It took a moment, but Ouzo and his pseudo-scientific past eventually placed it as lightning. Or ozone. As the gate folded in on itself to the size of a pinpoint the buzzing rose in pitch until it became a high-pitched squeal that stung the eardrums. Sight, sound, and smell assaulted the senses in the span of just a few seconds as the chaotic event rose to a fever pitch. Then the noise abruptly cutoff for a single instant...

And the doorway exploded.

The peeling rock that framed the spot the portal had once been shattered and burst forth in all directions. The shockwave was strong enough that Nao and Ouzo had to lean into it, but they seemed to suffer no direct consequences. Shortly thereafter the indirect consequences made themselves known in the form of a small tremor that shook the chamber. Only... it didn't stop. The small quake persisted as tiny fractures began to appear in the ceiling, the walls, even the floor all around them. The structural integrity of the hall wasn't immediately failing, though it didn't take Jie's prospecting skills to tell that's the way things were heading. Whether they had seconds or a minute or two, this place was about to completely collapse! Li Jie, Dr. Ouzo, and Nao had to decide if it was worth it to quickly explore the main hall or either side room for clues or beat a hasty retreat... After removing the apparently unconscious woman from Jie's prone form, that was.

From the hallway behind them the trio could hear Knuddelmaus' bellowing voice. "What in Lincoln's Beard is going on in there?! We're gettin' quakes out here, grab the chinaman and let's beat it!"

”Curse it he got away!” Nao snarled in fury as the demon exited with a flourish...and then imploded the portal. He had style, that was for sure, but Nao was certain he’d have his sights set on her for revenge if they ever met again. ”I’m pretty sure I blasted his arm off, did anyone else see that?!” the black clad bounty hunter yelled over the noise of the rumbling earth. She glanced at the others nervously and saw that Jie was now free, as his captor had slumped over, unconscious or dead she wasn’t sure.

”So glad to see you’re alive, friend Jie! I’d love to hear what happened while we were separated but right now I’d like to get somewhere safe!” She glanced down at the prone woman, a small tinge of pity entering her expression. ”What about this one? Is she alive? I’m loathe to leave her to certain death but she was attacking you. I can help carry her if you like.”

The Japanese woman jumped as another tremor rocked the mine. ”We had earthquakes like this at home and every instinct is telling me to get out! And fast!” She could hear Knuddlemaus yelling from beyond the collapsed section. Grabbing the unconscious woman under the arms, she started dragging her toward the exit, hoping the others would follow her.

Ouzo darted forward to assist Jie, but seeing that their lost friend was moving of his own accord, Ouzo instead moved to help up the strange woman, only to find Nao already there as well. As the others prepared to run, Ouzo couldn't help a glance down the hall... even if the very earth was coming down on top of them, just a quick peek couldn't hurt, right? Without even a word, while the others were occupied, Ouzo helped himself to a few steps deeper down the passage...

A study. Full of books and papers. And books and papers meant information. The dust-clad gentleman started forward again, before...

... before recognizing the torture room. That tarnished brass trim. That magma grout between the stones. Those wickedly curved instruments of torture. This was where he'd seen Croup. With one look over his shoulder - almost forlorn - he cursed inwardly. "Mierda!" Dr. Ouzo left alone the study, a likely treasure trove (or shall we say, goldmine?) of information, perhaps entirely unread by any non-demon eyes, to race into the opposite room: the torture chamber.

It was Ouzo rolls a 15 on PER/Seeing! Ouzo generates 4 SP!easy enough to scan the scene in this wicked room, having already seen it in a smoky premonition. A fitting medium. Inside, he first checked to see if the body was still where he'd seen it, shackled onto a frightfully medicinal sort of slab, as well as the body's condition (namely, if it were alive or dead), before quickly moving on to the implements of torture, the brass statuary, and the rest of the room...

Li Jie
Jie could not initially break free of the woman but managed to twist around enough to catch sight of Croup missing an arm. The look the demon gave Nao might have killed an ordinary woman. But it had bled. He had wondered if the demon was indestructible but here was proof to the contrary. Then it leapt through the portal. "Until we meet again!"

”Curse it he got away! I’m pretty sure I blasted his arm off, did anyone else see that?!”

"Yes!" Jie was emphatic and partly that he was able to slide the apparently unconscious woman off. His look said it all: elation at seeing his friends and relief at surviving. He’d thought he been trapped alone with the torments of Hell but now had the succour of friendship!

Croup’s chambers were rocked as the portal exploded. For a moment he shielded his face behind the demon’s plaything until the violent blast had passed. Jie felt her go limp like a corpse and considered that the demon might have controlled her completely.

”What about this one? Is she alive? I’m loathe to leave her to certain death but she was attacking you. I can help carry her if you like.”

Jie stood up from one knee. Looking with true sorrow at his attacker, perhaps borne of shock, he agreed with Nao absentmindedly, "I wonder if her kin live in Yellow Ledge… Posey will know..." Ouzo had ducked off into Croup’s sanctum while Jie had stamina left for nothing apart from leaving Mine Twelve. His mind roiled and quaked as the ceiling above him. He'd learned so much but had so much of it to process! It made him tired to the point of misery.

While Nao grabbed the arms, Jie grabbed the legs of the woman and heaved, muttering to the sharpshooter, "Ungh… that way… careful for the rubble… right… okay…"

It took only a moment for Nao and Jie to decide to rescue the woman. Each one picking a side, they raised her off the ground with ease. As it turned out the woman was quite frail, her previous strength in pinning Li Jie perhaps borne of desperation, or adrenaline? Hauling her through the doorway and out into the tunnel, Nao saw the hole she had climbed though widened a bit with the rubble framing the face and upper torso of Gerhard. The jötunn was still too large to squeeze through what they had cleared, but they had continued to make progress in the precious seconds Nao and Ouzo had left them. Halting his hand-powered excavation when he saw her and Jie come through the doorway, the blacksmith exclaimed to Knuddelmaus and Rhii on the other side of the cave-in. "Ja, ja! I see them! Jie, Miss Nao, ve must go... snel!" Reaching through the opening for them he glanced curiously at the body they were carrying. "Zat is not...? Vhere is ze doctor?" Shaking off the questions, Gerhard returned his focus to assisting them through the hole as fast as possible.

Meanwhile, Ouzo's solitary search revealed much. Choosing the room on the left with the rack of torture implements, several things became immediately apparent with a few-second glance. The thing that drew his eye first, perhaps, was the table against the right wall, or more specifically the body that lay on top of it. A man. Human, apparently, though with all the blood it was hard to tell. He was completely covered in it stemming from dozens of wounds head to foot. There was so much it dripped off the table in a steady beat and pooled on the floor beneath. At first glance it was unclear even if he was still breathing. The rack of torture devices bolted to the wall held all manner of implements, perhaps a dozen or more. Two large free-standing braziers were centered in the room, with a third on the left wall giving the space more than enough firelight. Two large brass statues were set into alcoves in the North and South walls. Each one featured some sort of demonic creature.

right-aligned image
This, but without the flames.
Deciding this room to be worth his time, the roguish doctor investigated further. The tremors throughout this place were not so great that he felt an immediate need to flee. Not yet, anyway. Each brass statue depicted an intensely grotesque, if artistically exquisite, display. The focal point of each piece was a demon. One stood with a foot up and arms outstretched in a confident, commanding pose. Very much intended to be the embodiment of masculine strength and confidence. The other lay on one side, languidly displaying their female form in an exhibition of sexuality. All around and intertwined with each figure were dozens of smaller figures. Humans. And they were in agony. Men and women being crushed, smothered, stretched, engulfed, consumed. By the central demonic figure. By each other. The installations were obviously communicating demonic superiority over mortals, and they were Ouzo needs to immediately make an Easy TN9 WIL test. Any WIL-based focus that's narratively appropriate can be used.
Failure means Ouzo is so disturbed by the images he becomes unfocused and suffers a -1 penalty to any test he makes while in this room!
more than a little unsettling to witness, especially here in this place. Each one had a small plaque at the bottom with a language Ouzo couldn't read.

The tools of pain came in all sizes; long and short, curved, spiked, bladed, hinged. Some were so elaborate it was difficult to fathom how they were intended to be used. One in particular caught his eye, mostly because it didn't seem to be a torture device at all. It was a gauntlet. Wicked looking, to be sure, but the claws that lay out over the fingers seemed to be more of an aesthetic choice than for any specific function. An intricate design over the wrist featured the bust of a demonic figure and where it covered the top of the hand there was a glassy surface, black as an absolute void. The metal glove was obviously arcane in nature, though what its purpose might be was completely unknown to Ouzo in this moment. Just above, affixed to the blackstone wall, was a piece of parchment with a note hastily scrawled across it. This time in plain English.

left-aligned image
Moving to the body that lay on the table, Ouzo was no doctor, at least not in any way that allowed him to make a professional assessment of this man's medical condition. However, he was able to perceive the faintest movement in the man's chest. He was breathing, if only shallowly. Without Rhii or someone with real aesculapian knowledge it was unclear if this man even could be saved, though if he could it would surely need to be done immediately. A ride on the back of Knudillos all the way to Yellow Ledge would surely be fatal. His hands and feet were bound to the table in metal cuffs, each with a simple latch held closed with a pin. It would be a matter of seconds to free him, though carrying him back to the tunnel might prove Average TN11 STR (Might) test to carry the body.
A failure won't necessarily mean Ouzo can't complete the task, although ineffectually dragging an injured body could do more harm to an already unstable and unconscious person...
a slight challenge, given the man's state of health and Ouzo's... average lifting capabilities.

Meanwhile the quakes steadily rose in intensity. Small pebbles and dust began to shake loose from the ceiling while Ouzo, Nao, and Li Jie all noticed small factures beginning to show. The thought that tons of rock and earth would soon bury the space they were standing in was inescapable...

Ouzo

There was gaudy and then there was gaudy. The conman gawked at the horrible bronze statues depicting some horrible worship or horrible sacrifice (or both?) of humans to demons. What was this, an elvish villa on the east coast? They were certainly the worse type of gaudy: too big to fit in under a coat and too flashy to attract any discrete buyer.

The man on the table - he was still moving! It was too subtle a movement to be a convulsion or post-mortem twitch, so he must've still been breathing. Ouzo rushed over and released the metal restraints. Then he wrinkled his nose: "Oh dear. You've really let yourself go, haven't you?" Sure enough, it was the same man from his smoky premonition earlier. Ouzo hovered about only for a moment before turning to the tray of unspeakable-looking torture devices: any bandages...? Something to cut makeshift bandages from his own shirt...?

His attention drew to the wicked, magical-seeming claw. Something for Good Friend Jie to divine later. "Henwright, whoever you are you spoil me! Bounty overflow-eth..." Ouzo tucked both the claw and its accompanying note into his bag. Treasure, a name, and a handwriting sample! At least his good intentions wouldn't be entirely un-profitable.

Then back to scanning the tools... Aha! Dr. Ouzo found some alien torture device with a handle wrapped in rolls of cloth as a grip. He unraveled the material and used it to cover the worst of Rico's injuries. "JIE! NAO! WE'VE ANOTHER ONE... IT'S VERY VERY BAD!" Dr. Ouzo shouted. "Rico. Is that your name, Rico? Henrietta, she's alive. Henrietta is safe," A small part of him hoped that the name of his girlfriend might rouse some will to survive. Some ounce of perseverance. "Can you hear me? Hold on. I'm going to try and move you now. This might, ah, hurt just a bit... On second thought, don't wake up for this."

And with that, Ouzo hooked his elbows under Rico's shoulders from behind and pulled him off the table, scurrying in reverse. The man's already-injured legs thudd-ed where they landed. The conman cursed again, but out of the room and down the hall they went. As Dr. Ouzo turned the corner, and he watched the doorway to the devil's study go by, he reflected on how unlikely this predicament really was. The other room must have been full of profitable secrets, but here he was, of all things, playing doctor. "You'd better - unf - live a long and happy life after this, Rico - ugh - you tonto bendito...!" Then he noticed that Rico's form was leaving spots of blood on the floor behind them. Ouzo's eyes widened. "... RHII! I NEED YOU! AYUDAME!"
