It felt good to have a plan and to put it in motion. Nao helped prepare the area for ambush with grim anticipation. Then became very, very bored waiting for the moths to appear. If she were any less professional she might have taken a nap but these were demons and there was no way she was letting her guard down around them.

When a moth finally showed up, she tensed, her focus sharpening. She waited with her comrades as more moths showed up. She signaled to Rhii and Kuddlemaus that she was going to take a shot. Nao bared her teeth in a battle grin and zeroed in on a moth. This one was hers. Her vision narrowed to her target, following its erratic flight path, back and forth, around and around, and there came a moment when she knew it was just right. She shifted forward just a bit beyond the makeshift wall of blankets and pulled the trigger. Bam! The recoil knocked her back but she was prepared and she had the satisfaction of seeing her shot knock a moth from its dance around the flames. She pulled back, readying herself for another shot.

Ouzo

Even though he was the one to describe the idea to the others, he didn't think far enough ahead to realize the ambush meant he would be closest to danger. Could any of them know how terrible of a shot he was...? His own firearm was mostly just for show, only if lies had failed him. And shadows. And smiles. And running. And...

left-aligned image
Dr. Ouzo was staring out towards the ravine (out of fidgety, tobaccoless boredom) when the first moth emerged. The fell doctor ever-so-gently removed his hand from the inners of his duster, revealing a sleek and somewhat unusual-looking pistol. It was perhaps the first time he'd been seen with a weapon. And by the looks of how he was gripping it, it may as well have been his first time wielding it.

Along with the others, he took aim from the cover of the hanging bedroll partition, watching as more and more Demonika Lepidopterae drew in to the revelry surrounding the flame. Their slow trickle in gave a few moments to reflect on the devil-bugs. Funny, how close they fluttered towards burning danger, only to dance away. It really did seem like a dance, how circular some of their flight patterns seemed.

A dance... That's it!

Dr. Ouzo took aim, suddenly feeling the dampness that'd formed around his armpits and brow, and the clamminess of his palms around the metal grip. But he followed the movements of one particular demon moth, and sure enough, it fluttered in towards the flame-lure, then up and away, and back in. Patterned. Predictable. He'd almost forgot they were waiting to coordinate and open fire together, so when Nao gave the signal, Ouzo didn't hesitate.

A single shot, BANG, unwavering. Not at the target's body or head. But at its wing. Just before its dance away from the flame. Dr. Ouzo lingered just long enough to see the demon moth flail directly towards the cackling fire, grinning sly at the trickshot, before his eyes widened and he fled from the front lines altogether.

Li Jie. Late Afternoon, 18th of August, 1885. Yellow Ledge, Western Protectorate.

Li Jie
Jie watched, dao drawn, as shots rang out. Ouzo’s pistol crack brought one to the flames, invoking a memory from the faraway goldfields of a cotton moth sizzling and cracking on a fire as he and his father watched. Drawn to the flame and death. Those moths were so strange; seeking light in the dark but hiding in the shade camouflaged underneath leaves or in rock overhangs during the day. Cotton moths were the favourite food of every small bird in the area. They’d snatch them in their beaks and shake them until their wings fell off before swallowing them whole. Gulp, just like that. You’d see it at dawn as the small insects, behaving entirely on instinct, would seek a dark place to hide from their relatively giant predators. Base instinct their motivation.

After a day of talk and investigation Jie was ready to begin the purge of these demons that had brought so much harm to his lover’s community. Witnessing for the first time these Demonika Leipdoptera, he was struck by how human their form was. They blended and twisted features of insect and man and their flitting was undeniably insectoid. He wondered whether there was any higher sentient thought within that perverted head. He also wondered whether they had once been human and had been corrupted by some evil force. Did the moth demons contain tortured souls of unquiet dead? Souls that hadn’t been able to transit to Yama’s realm; whether shut out or evicted. Jie wondered where these thoughts even came from and sighed heavily thinking life was so much simpler before.

Jie steeled himself for a possible rush towards his group and would make sure he was at the front to defend them. He moved up against the makeshift barricade and Minor Action to move into cover.took cover behind one the ceiling support beams. He’d be ready to cut them down as they came with his father’s sword, and do his best to see that no harm came to his friends.

Adrenalin grew and summoned an impulse from deep within. The blood and bodies and Jie’s care for his friends and the folk of Yellow Ledge manifested in a vision of Yama; majestic, indomitable, and utterly scrupulous. A strange Activate Armour of Yamafeeling of protection enveloped Jie and he had an epiphany. He must survive the coming ordeal to achieve his purpose; rid the town of these evil demons. Yama was protecting him.

Eminently satisfied that he’d been blessed with divine protection, Jie grinned a crazed grin and welcomed the coming moths with eagerness.

"ᛞᛇᛗᛟᚾᛁᛋᚲᛖ ᛗᛟᛖᛚ" muttered Gerhard with some measure of incredulity. Certainly he had expected something he hadn't seen before, but moths almost made them as amusing to him as they were dangerous. The aural reality of them however had him somewhat disconcerted. Ordinarily even the largest of ordinary bugs were swatted with great ease by him. Clearly this was not the case for these. Watching the fire and waiting for moths to emerge took more time than Ragnar would have liked, yet there was no relief when they finally emerged. watching intently as Ouzo did something clever, and undoubtedly sneaky, the Gerhard's face was lit by a sudden idea coming to him even as he watched Ouzo flee from his shot at the moths. With a half lit grin, he waved the sneaky disreputable over to his position.

Whispering, as much with some measure of excitement as a sense of caution, Gerhard clapped a heavy hand on the 'doctor's' shoulder. "Hej, you know how to do clever things ja? I have an idea. When I give you the signal, do something clever!" It would have been a lie for Gerhard, or Ragnar, so say they were excited about working with someone as disreputable as the swarthy figure but a childlike part of him was excited by the prospect of overcoming an unknown foe. All moths, even these, are allured by Light's siren song. Surely that can be used to their advantage. To think, now I have to trust the mongrel... he thought as he scrambled away from Ouzo to get into position.

Night, 19th of August, 1885.The soft wingbeats of the demon moths seemed oddly demure and stood in stark contrast to their undoubtedly evil existence. The only accompaniment seemed to be the odd spurt of sound from the companions themselves; a creak in Nao's leather armor. A small jingle from Jie's dao rings. A few idle clanks as the gears in the minotaur's heavy pistol rotated its chamber.

A relative silence fell over the area, full of tension and anticipation for the violence that was waiting, just out of reach.
NaoFinally Nao signaled to everyone that she would take the first shot. Nao bared her teeth in a battle grin and zeroed in on a moth. Moth #2This one was hers. The moth took a severe shot from Nao's rifle square in the torso. Pinkish-white ichor splurted from the wound and it very nearly careened to the ground. It looked not long for this world!

be used to their advantage. To think, now I have to trust the mongrel... he thought as he scrambled away from Ouzo to get into position.

RhiiThe diminuitive pixie immediately let the arrow fly from her bow. While barely larger than a toothpick, the projectile seemed to increase in size and, startlingly, velocity as it streaked towards Moth #4one of the moths. By the time it made impact a split second later the arrow had grown to what the others would consider full size, and left a trail of sparkling stardust in its wake that slowly floated to the ground and disappeared. A satisfying *THUNK* alerted Rhii that her arrow had 13 to-hit, 8 damage!found its target. She gave a grim smirk and followed the others' lead, Minor Action (Move): SE, SE, SE, NE. Take Cover.flitting backwards and letting the heavy hitters take point.

KnuddelmausWith a snort of growing battle lust the minotaur stomped his hoof a few times and bared his teeth. With one hand holding the gigantic geared pistol towards the mine entrance and the other raised in front of him holding their scavenged lantern in a white-knuckled fist, it was clear he was holding his ground out in the open and eagerly anticipating a target to unleash violence upon.

The moth that Ouzo had expertly sent into the flames ended up getting exactly what they were all frantically trying to obtain and flee away from at the same time. A disturbingly high-pitched shriek emanated from the demon as it's paper-thin wings and short, bristly hairs caught alight. Its skin seemed unusually thick and appeared to give it a modicum of protection from the searing heat. That didn't stop it from flailing wildly through the air however; up the walls, along the ground, desperately trying to smother the flames in any way it could, Moth #1 failed its DEX (Acrobatics) test to smother the flames!but it continued to burn...

The others had noticeably shifted their flight patterns and appeared to collectively understand there was a threat to their flame-dancing. Circling the campfire once more, Jie and Gerhard could plainly see they intended to rush the mine's entrance in search of whatever was throwing pain their way. However, the group had prepared wisely and they still had a few seconds before the moths were upon them!

Seeing the flaming moth careening around gave Nao an idea but first she wanted to get as many shots off as she could before the moths swarmed them. Her heart was racing and things around her seemed to slow down, as they often did when she was in battle. It was one of the things that had allowed her to survive so long. Her reflexes and mind seemed to speed up, and she kept her cool until after the fight was done. She poked her head, and gun, around the blankets again and was able to shoot two unharmed moths in quick succession. The second moth seemed to have been hurt more, if its shrieks were any indication. Its teeth gnashed as its jaw moved side to side, the departure from a normal up and down movement making it both comical and horrifying. It thrashed around, gradually losing the power of flight and crashing onto the ground where it made a last pathetic noise, almost a whine, still seeming to be fixated on the fire and reaching out to it...then it shuddered and was still. What a dramatic death scene. Nao thought, rolling her eyes.

Turning to Gerhard and Jie, Nao said in a loud whisper, ”Their wings seem quite flammable! If you could knock them into the fire, or knock that flaming one into some others, they might not be able to fly much longer. They’re less of a threat without mobility!” She took aim again, hoping to get one last shot.

Ouzo

More shots rang out. A twang of the fairy's bow. It had begun. And how Dr. Ouzo disliked a fair fight.

"Something clever, eh?" He focused then, beginning to mutter under his breath and trace symbols in the air. Rapidly. Intensely. Beads of sweat sprouted on his brow. After several moments of strain across his face, three figures appeared among their ranks...

One was a slightly smaller, human-sized (though still tall for a human) form of Gerhard. Its muscles fully flexed and face contorted in an endless, silent howl at the sky. Even more strange, though, was that bright orange flames sprouted from it where there should have been a beard and hair. There was also a sudden likeness of Knuddelmaus, similarly shrunk to the size of a large human, and coincidentally, with a mane and beard of fire. Unlike the pseudo-Gerhard's pose of a frightening berserk rage, the pseudo-Knuddelmaus was frozen in a rather provocative form, peeking at the cave entrance over his shoulder and blowing a kiss. By this point, the third image was of little surprise. It was the lady of the evening from the Dead Man's Happiness, her expression frozen in a terrifying roar, with a furrowed brow and upturned mouth, similar to that of Gerhard. In her hands appeared to be the remains of a demon moth, ripped entirely in half. True to form, her hair was also made of open flame, as if caught in an unseen gust and frozen in place.

Animating them would have to wait. For now, Dr. Ouzo just gasped for breath and held onto the mine cart to keep upright. Should any of their little band have looked over to him, the fell doctor would have merely shrugged: "Is a good distraction, no? ... what?"

Jie's adrenalin had peaked and he was sweating in the close confines of the cave. He smelt the smoke and heat and sweat from the last user of the bedroll he sheltered behind. But his eyes were firmly fixed on the moths and, particularly, which one would come within range of his father's dao.

He raised the blade back and behind his shoulder, and, as the moths rushed forth of paper-thin wings he showed himself only long enough to slash a diagonal arc. Despite One Conviction point spent for a re-rollwanting to do the best he could, Jie's surprise attack missed the demon-moth by an inch. His life flashed before him with the visions ending with Yama for whom he gave a brief prayer for protection as his sworn enemies approached.

Night, 19th of August, 1885.

Nao poked her head, and gun, around the blankets again and was able to shoot #3 & #7two unharmed moths in quick succession.

Jie's adrenalin had peaked and he was sweating in the close confines of the cave. He smelt the smoke and heat and sweat from the last user of the bedroll he sheltered behind. But his eyes were firmly fixed on the moths and, particularly, which one would Moth #2come within range of his father's dao.

The remaining moths stormed the cloth barricade and exploded out into the night in a tornado of flight and motion and odd slurping sounds. The moth that Ouzo had set on fire continued to burn for a few seconds before finally able to end its suffering and joined the others in surrounding those at the mouth of the mine, its wings noticeably singed.

Jie raised his blade back and behind his shoulder, and, as the moths rushed forth of paper-thin wings he showed himself only long enough to slash a diagonal arc. Despite wanting to do the best he could, Jie's surprise attack missed the demon-moth by an inch. In return the demon 14 to-hit, 3 damage! Reduced to 0 by Armor of Yama!gnashed at the prospector's face and arms with razor-sharp teeth and Moth #4another even joined it, 16 to-hit, 4 damage! Reduced to 0 by Armor of Yama!raking its claws along Jie's side as it sped past him. His life flashed before him with the visions ending with Yama for whom he gave a brief prayer for protection as his sworn enemies approached. However, the blessing of Yama would be Jie's saving grace this evening as after the first trading of blows it seemed not a tooth or claw had touched the tiefling!

Gerhard, following Nao's suggestion, prepared to grapple Moth #1the flaming moth with the intention of bludgeoning it into others and spread the inferno. However, by the time it exited the mine it seemed to have extinguished the blaze. Already committed, the giant reached out anyway and snatched the singed demon from the air. As they struggled against each other Gerhard was able to maneuver it in such a way that, so long as it didn't wriggle free, he was in a position to swing it like a flail!

right-aligned image
Knuddelmaus, struck dumb by the sudden appearance of a much more promiscuous version of himself, didn't even notice that it sported a mane of fire. Nor did he notice the moths whirling about. His eyes narrowed and turned to face Ouzo, glaring with a murderous rage that shut out all other distractions. Holstering his hand cannon he took one slow step towards the Spaniard before Moth #3a moth, aiming to snack on the pseudo-version of the minotaur, passed right through the illusion and collided with the solid one. Shaking out of his tunnel vision but no less crazed, Knuddelmaus grabbed the winged demon around the neck with one hand and proceeded to pummel it with his other, gigantic fist. Each strike was accompanied by a sickening crunch as bones, tendons, and cartilage succumbed to minotaur frenzy. He bore the thing to the ground and by the time he was done all that was left was a twisted pile of torso and limbs that barely held together.

left-aligned image
Standing, he faced Dr. Ouzo once more. The majority of his rage seemed to have burned out and was replaced with deadly calm. Pointing at the good doctor, his hand dripping with blood and ichor, he uttered a few simple words before turning to stalk off and find another thing to pummel. "Don't. Do that. Again."

Waiting for the demons to emerge, Rhii nocked another arrow and peeked out from the large pile of rocks just to the side of the entrance. When they showed themselves everything started happening so quickly. The pixie stared aghast at the scene of carnage that played out in front of her. Looking like she didn't want to be anywhere near the monstrosities that were several times larger than her and could probably swallow her whole, she flitted back a foot or two in shock. Instead of fleeing she gulped, steeled herself, and drew a bead on one of those closest to her...

Of the two remaining demon moths, Moth #5one charged the doubly-red-lady-double, passing through the illusion in its attempt to gnosh on the helpless image. Moth #6The last one found a juicy target in Nao and 13 to-hit, 3 damage!clamped down on her, its teeth sinking in to her steadying arm and drawing blood!

Once the moths figured out where the attack was coming from they were surprisingly fast. Fast enough that all Nao had time for was a shouted ”Son of a AHHHHHH!” before she had moth teeth fastened on her arm. Still yelling in both pain and anger, she blasted the moth attacking her at point blank range. A hole exploded in the demon, splattering Nao with blood and guts. Disgusting, but the moth was now definitely dead and not doing her any more damage.

Nursing her wounded arm, Nao retreated to the cover of the mine cart with Ouzo. She did a double-take when she noticed the illusions of Gerhard, the lady of dubious nature, and...Knuddlemaus? The absurdity of it all made Nao snort a giggle and she whispered to Ouzo ”You have more balls than sense, my friend. I think angering our good babysitter is more dangerous than the moths. Though...I did appreciate the humor.” She winked, then turned her attention to her weapon.

Ouzo sighed to mask his nervousness. He'd certainly gotten a reaction. "Yeesh, okay, okay. I'm sorry for saving your life, already. You'd think -- mierda -- Rhii! Ayu- ah, save Rhii!" He extended both hands out, one forward and one to the side, twirling his palms and fingers to will different Figments to move at once.

First, the illusory Knuddelmaus, closest to the onslaught against Rhii and Jie, spun around to face their cluster of hell bugs. It flexed into a silent, ferocious roar, its flaming mane whipping and snapping in a lightless glow. (Conveniently, this also released the image from its original, somewhat ungentlemanly pose.) Second, the illusory courtesan threw one half of its illusory demon moth-prey to the ground and beckoned with its remains, hair similarly roiling.

It was all he could do, really. Conjuring so much had left him drained. And they'd only barely gained an advantage in numbers...

Li Jie. Night, 19th of August, 1885.

Li Jie
Jie was amazed and gladdened by Yama's protection. The strange deity and guardian of the Underworld that he'd seen glimpses of in visions had protected him from harm! A flash of resentment crossed Jie's mind thinking, 'Where was that protection when my Father was killed!' He quickly remembered that his awakening happened not long after his father's death, and that the strange bond with Yama occured after that new spirituality had emerged. It made him fiercer in his resolve to slay the demons with the precious dao.

Now surrounded by moths, he took careful weight of the curved blade and watched the demon's movement with narrowed eyes, Minor action = Aimaiming carefully. It seemed like he had the measure of it and swung a series of attacks. Rage overtook him as the damned demons both evaded the dao's sharp blade. He growled like a bear, his eyes rolling in his head!

Jie was amazed and gladdened by Yama's protection. The strange deity and guardian of the Underworld that he'd seen glimpses of in visions had protected him from harm! A flash of resentment crossed Jie's mind thinking, 'Where was that protection when my Father was killed!' It made him fiercer in his resolve to slay the demons with the precious dao.

The giant Gerhard, struggling with his moth-turned-weapon, lumbered towards an unoccupied enemy and did his best to swing one demon into another. The frantic squirming and wingbeats made it quite difficult to aim effectively and all he succeeded in doing was swinging it through empty air and angering it! In retaliation, the moth that he was holding and the one he attempted to attack Moth #1 Bite Attack: 14 to-hit for 7 damage!
Moth #5 Claw Attack: 18 to-hit for 2 damage!
Moth #5 uses 5 Stunt Points on Skirmish to move Gerhard NE, NE, N and itself N, NE!
both lunged at him with tooth and claw and Gerhard's flesh tore open in several garish wounds! The demon moth not held in the jötunn's grip began buffeting its wings and clawing at the giant, not to injure but instead to force him to back up and eventually stumble through the barricade of bedding and back into the mine, out of sight of everyone but Li Jie!

Rhii, while not their direct target, became frantic at two giant white-furred demons within her vicinity and 16 to-hit, 9 damage!let an arrow fly at the nearest one. The streaking missile pierced the moth just under the armpit; a death blow! The pixie seemed to surprise herself at her accuracy and lethality, summoning the courage to remain in place and draw another arrow.

Seeing the battle quickly dwindling and his services no longer required, Knuddelmaus takes a few steps back out of the fray and draws his hand cannon once more, waiting for an open shot or for the fighting to come to an end.

The last remaining moth still has its large, bulbous red eyes set squarely on the tiefling and Moth #2 Bite Attack: 14 to-hit, 4 damage reduced to 0 by Armor of Yama!dives forward for another chance at supping on his dark flesh. Once more, Jie's mystical armor prevents teeth from touching skin! With the realization that for some reason this feast has an impenetrable outer shell and a meal is being brought back inside, the demon retreats back through the barricade...

Following its path, Li Jie and Gerhard (being the only two who can currently see inside the mine) catch movement at the far end of the straight-away. It seems more of these beasts have caught sight of the flickering campfire and are headed in your direction!

Seeing Gerhard's massive form get buffeted out past the barricade and a new flight of demons arrive prompted Jie into action. He wouldn't allow another to bear the brunt of their diabolical foe!

He took a deep breath and prayed for better skill with his blade, 'May Father's soul guide our dao and help me make right on the wrongs of the past.'

Wild-eyed, he pushed past the barricade, moving quickly but deliberately. Alongside Gerhard with wings pushing fetid air past his face he felt the full chaos and danger of the situation. 'There were so many of these demons and they'd slain so many of the miners! What was to stop them making a meal of the party?

With the demon in range he maneuvered carefully where his blade might not struck the man-mountain and swung. His prayer went unanswered by his ancestors which plunged Jie's heart into self-doubt. He could not seem to damage these evil creatures and worried if it was punishment for his failures.

His bloody-mindedness then took hold. He die trying to achieve their quest, feeling he'd go to his ancestors with dignity having tried his best to make a difference in the town of his love. After a quick glance over his shoulder he then sprang to the front of the melee, straddling the iron tracks and making the best defence he could. The next wave came on!

Seeing Rhii dispatch a moth with her tiny bow and arrow, Nao felt her eyebrows rise in surprise, which seemed to mirror the small fae’s expression. Chuckling softly, she trained her sights and gun on one of the few remaining moth demons. Beyond the winged monstrosity, she saw Gerhard and Jie disappear behind the blanket barrier. What are those two doing? Was Gerhard swinging a moth, or was the moth hauling him around?” She wanted to go after them but needed to take care of the one in front of her first. Nao squeezed the trigger and fired. Her shot was good, and the small but deadly Japanese woman added another kill to her growing moth body count. ”Yatta!” she exclaimed gleefully. She carefully made her way back to the blanket barrier, peeking beyond to see what was going on.
