The only one-shot I've ever run (I've been playing tabletop rpgs for 10 years and have only DM'd maybe three times in that entire time) is Skittershot for Starfinder, a free one-shot from Paizo. None of us really knew how to play Starfinder going in, but it was a fun time. It's designed to be an intro game, so it gave a brief overview of the rules and mechanics, which was a plus, and comes with four premade character sheets. All players are skittermanders, which are small, multi-armed fuzzy aliens who love to help people, whether those people actually want their help or not.

The one module that always sticks in my mind is The Haunted Halls of Eveningstar.

Loved that adventure.

I'm going to put a big plug here for the crazy-as-hell one-shot games that Grant Howitt has written as standalone one-page RPGs. It's a little bit of a mental shift to get away from the rules and constraints of a more complicated game system, and embrace the more "anything goes" vibe of these adventures, but WOW are they fun. Low stress for players, low prep for GMs, and very memorable. Everyone has heard of Honey Heist (maybe) but there are a bazillion more of all varieties. He's written so many that you can find one to suit your party or even your mood. Check them out at his itch.io where you can pay what you want, or they're collected in books at Rowan, Rook, and Decard, the publishing endeaver he co-founded.

Go support indie developers! Go play weird little games!
