Blood of the Aurora

Game NameBlood of the Aurora
Game SystemPF 2e
ThemeMilitary band defending your homeland
FlavourWar & Politics, gothic horror, vikings
Plot Summary
All Quiet on the Eastern FrontFor centuries, the Black Ravens have stood as the Linnorm Kingdoms’ bulwark against the winter witches and their minions. Yet Hagreach has been unusually calm as of late; raiding from Irrisen has all but ceased since Queen Anastasia broke Baba Yaga’s cycle and took power in Whitethrone. Her attention has instead been focused on internal affairs, improving the lives of her citizens and fighting for her life against the winter witches who plot against the so-called “fraud queen”.

Freyr Darkwine, the grizzled commander of the Black Ravens and castellan of the city of Trollheim, has used the opportunity to bolster Black Raven Hall’s defenses, digging moats and trenches, installing siege weapons, and even brokering a deal with a pack of river drakes to patrol the Rimeflow. Your duties in the Black Ravens have been diminished to little more than tax collection on river cargo, tracking down the occasional bandit, and lots and lots of routine patrols… like the one you’re on now.

”Nothin’ but more bloody trees and more bloody snow out here.” Stenvast’s booming voice still rumbles in your ears like distant thunder as you urge your mounts along a narrow forest road hard against the border with Irrisen. Freyr’s second-in-command had never been quiet about his distaste for the commander’s conservative strategy, but the past several months he’d been bordering on open dissent. ”We should be takin’ the offensive while we got a chance. Not frolickin’ about in the woods with our fingers in our bums.” Huddled in your cloaks for the third day out on patrol with nothing but the wind and the crows for company, you’re starting to wonder if maybe he has a point. That is, until you spot the massive column of black smoke rising on the horizon and the crude hut crouched on avian legs to one side of the road, completely abandoned, the only other signs a dual pair of children’s footprints, running frantically away from the hut. Something dark is afoot, and as soldiers in the Black Ravens, it’s your job to investigate, but what you find may bare ill omens for much more than a single village, for unbeknownst to you, a shadow hangs of the Sagalands, and only blood will sate its thirst.

The GameRecruiting up to six players, starting as a patrol of Black Ravens - a military band tasked guarding the Linnorm Kingdoms’ eastern border with Irrisen. Renowned witch hunters and monster slayers, they attract members of all stripes for any number of reasons, but the past few years of peace have relegated them to mundane tasks and caused discontent among the ranks. As the campaign progresses, you’ll have the option of taking charge of the Black Ravens, deploying units on operations, building outposts, and negotiating with other factions as you fight for the freedom of the Linnorm Kingdoms. To represent all of this, we’ll use the following rules and subsystems:

I intend for this to be a long-term campaign, but the nature of the story means it’s easy to drop characters in or out if you’re looking for something more short term. I would also like to run multiple groups in the future, all operating in the same living world, but I’d like to get this game up and running before delving too deep. The story is centered around war, but I’m most interested in people than tactical wargaming, so there’ll be plenty of opportunities for role-play, and I’l be looking for characters with some meat to their personality and backstories.

Characters

All official SRD options on Archives of Nethys are allowed, just make sure you address any rare options in your character history. I’ll also be allowing the Gunslinger and Inventor classes from the Guns & Gears play test, until the book releases in October.

If you’ve never played Pathfinder 2e before, no problem. There’s a handy Player's Guide and Pathbuilder 2e is a great online character creator that will do all the hard work for you.

Tentative deadline for applications is October 1st, depending on interest. I look forward to meeting your characters.

Okay so I think this application is done. I may tune up some of the exposition but this should cover the basics!

Application
left-aligned image
right-aligned image

Name: Anka Silversnow, and Zullie
Ancestry/Heritage: Kitsune (Frozen Wind)
Background: Winter's Child
Class: Magus (Starlit Span)
Archetype: Summoner (Fey Eidolon)
Alignment: Neutral

Appearance: For the most part, Anka appears as a fair-skinned kellid woman of lithe figure and graceful beauty. Blonde haired, icy blue eyed, and pale skinned, Anka prefers to dress in functional but warm-winter clothing and minimal armor. Her voice is low, but soft. She wears a light blade and a quiver on her most of the time, since she's almost always on duty. Her bow is a useful weapon, one she's earned her keep with numerous times, but it's more the unseen things that she can do that lets her stand out among the Black Ravens.

What she doesn't reveal to anyone but the other Black Ravens whom she is obligated to trust is that she isn't human at all, but rather one of the rare northern kitsune. In her true shape, she's a snow white kitsune with the same eyes, dark eyeshadow, and crystalline nails on her hands and paws. Her tail is particularly thick and fluffy.

Seen around her only really during active patrols or combat situations, Zullie is an inseparable presence with the wintry kitsune huntress. A winter fey bound to Zullies' spirit, Zullie appears something akin to a wintry nymph, but her form is oddly translucent or see-through, as if her skin is made of a scant layer of snow and wintry air lies beneath, with only bones of ice and a beating heart of frost within her breast. Unlike Anka, Zullie's voice is sharp and high, like the twinkling of wind through icicles on a cold night.

Personality: Anka is someone who is believed to be taciturn, but in reality she just has a hard time trusting others. Many years of living through persecution for both being a kitsune and a spellcaster in a country where witches are a constant concern has led her to be cautious around her fellows unless they've proven she can trust them implicitly.

She has been bound to Zullie since adolescence, and has developed a rapport with the otherworldly spirit. Since Anka helped Zullie reform after being humiliatingly destroyed, the fey has a debt to pay back, and most people know how serious fey take their promises.

Character history: Ever since she was a pup, Anka had witnessed the conflicts with the winter witches and their leader Baba Yaga. While these things were oft the nature of life in the north, she always sympathized with the poor people who had nothing to do with the conflict and yet were victims of the fallout in the war. In her youth she had several bad encounters with people who treated her cruelly because of their fear of who and what she was. These moments made her realize that her world would be better off if she could prove herself to be above the prejudice and hate.

She ended up deciding to join the Black Ravens because she realized that she did in fact have the ability to make a difference and help protect these people. If she did, she might even make enough of a difference that the people could look at her without distrust. Not to mention her natural abilities made her quite resilient to the cold... which always an advantage when dealing with threats in the snowy reaches.

Name: Geron "Black Ox" Bulwer
Ancestry/Heritage: Human/Beastkin
Background: Deep Background
Class: Ranger
Archetype: Fighter
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Appearance: An older, grizzled man of eight and thirty, though he appeared near ten years older, Geron was born and raised in the snow-swept lands of the eastern border. That much was clear by his appearance alone. His long shaggy hair and scruffy beard were dark, contrasted by his lighter blue eyes. He stood large and broad with a barrel chest and a neck as thick as an ox's. All that combined with his family name and the traditional black garb and furs he hid under gained him the moniker - Black Bull.

Personality: All the years both surviving and serving on the cold front had left Geron a much more grim man. While he is no stranger to a good drink and a good laugh with his brothers and sisters of the band, it remains a rarer sight these days. Now, with the war over, Geron has grown antsy and anxious in recent years. Having been born into war and lived most of his life around it, the peace times have been a struggle to become accustomed to. Far too used to the days if greater fighting out in the wilds, keeping himself alert.

Character history: Geron's home was a small village unfortunate enough to have been settled far too close to the eastern border. There was always strife there, and a struggle to survive. Especially when the cool winds came rising and with them the monsters. Yet, somehow, the people endured year after year with their numbers dwindled but persisting nonetheless. During his youth, in his fifteenth winter, the harsh times came once more and it would be his own flesh and blood that would suffer this season as beasts had taken his father's life out in the front, torn him limb from limb. While his mother took to a winter sickness and died from it sometime later. Leaving Geron to inherit what was left of his family's meager household, left to fend for himself.

In his twenty-first winter, the war had reached new heights and his village was left on its last legs as it took the invading forces swarmed over it. The riders of the Black Raven's, at the time, having been too late to arrive with aid. Geron was forced to flee. Flee his home for his life, venturing out into the woods where he'd near die from the cold till a ghost of some unknown nature came upon him. By its form alone, Geron could not tell whether the dead being was some long-dead Black Raven cursed to wander, some poor villager who'd died in these woods as he was likely to and haunted the lands now, or some beast protector of the woods. Whatever it was, Geron did come to know it, learn from it, and even survive the snows with its aid. Though, it did not come without cost. The undead being bestowed on him the curse of the beastskin to aid him in survival. In the form of a beast, Geron was better suited to the cold and hunting and living in these wild conditions.

Only when the snows melted did Geron emerge from the wilds a changed man, and still with nothing to his name. Eventually, he'd come to encounter a Black Raven's recruiter who offered everything he did not have - shelter, food, security, a warm bed to sleep in every night. All of this in exchange for his service and his life, and so Geron had no choice to accept, and never would he regret it. For the next near seventeen years of his life, Geron remained a brother of the Black Ravens as a ranger on the border.

Name: Gertrude "The Talon" Revnandi
Ancestry/Heritage: Human (Versatile Human)
Background: Deep Background

Class: Swashbuckler
Archetype: Beastmaster
Alignment: Neutral

Appearance: Gertrude's tousled red hair is sometimes braided, but even the braids tend to have a messy appearance. She has soft eyes that often look disinterested or bored, but take a harder edge when swords are drawn. Her fair face is covered in sinewy tattoos, one for each major victory she's had in battle.

Over her leather armor she wears an old tattered cloak, which she has a different story for each time it comes up. Sometimes its her father's old cloak, and she wears it to honor him. Other times it was the cloak of a vicious criminal and she wears it as a trophy. No one knows the real reason. Her buckler is almost always slung over her back and her spear is never far from her hand, nor is her pet raven Skuld ever far from her shoulder.

While Skuld had been little more than an ordinary raven who had bonded with Gertrude before she joined the Black Ravens, he has grown larger than is normal for such a creature, but his feathers often appear as tousled as Gertrude's hair. Gertrude will tell anyone after a few drinks at the local tavern that Skuld grows as she defeats her foes in battle, whether or not this is true is up to the other tavern-goers to decide.

Personality: On initial meeting, Gertrude can appear either aloof or brazen, depending on how much ale she's had that day. Often preferring to scout out a situation, whether it's tactical or social, she listens first and speaks second. Prone to telling tall tales, she enjoys starting rumors about herself that increase the air of mystery that comes from keeping one's thoughts to oneself. In combat however, she is often the first to act, and the first to kill. A vicious warrior, her speed and agility make her difficult to escape from once she decides on her prey. If a foe does manage to escape her, they need to keep an eye to the sky for the dark wings of Skuld. The impressively sized raven has a mischievous streak, and seems to delight in the suffering of Gertrude's foes, to a point that sometimes makes the young woman uncomfortable.

Character history: Gertrude grew up in the northern reaches of the Linnorm Kingdoms, in a remote and peaceful village near the Moundlands. Her family's trade was that of hunters, and Gertrude learned at a young age how to move through the snow so that prey would not detect her. Her family had lived in the same town for generations, and Gertrude likely would have as well, except that she met Skuld. Ravens were a common sight near the Moundlands, but something about this particular raven was different. The way that it followed Gertrude was irritating at first but soon she saw the value in having such an ally. She trained Skuld to fetch her things, or alert her to the presence of predators when she was out hunting. Though Gertrude was an excellent hunter, her family grew wary of her control over the raven, and sought the aid of the village shaman, Ugor the Blind. The shaman told Gertrude and her family that the raven was a dark omen, and that the gods had decided she was to join the Black Ravens, lest calamity befall their village. Despite her protests, her family banished her from the village and bade her join the Black Ravens. Having nowhere else to go, and having her own tentative doubts as to why Skuld had chosen her, she heeded Ugor's advice and signed on with the Black Ravens.

Since then, Gertrude has proven herself a capable warrior for the Black Ravens, using speed and stealth to get the drop on her foes, and even Skuld has proven useful to their patrol on a few occasions.

Will we still be able to take archetypes with our normal class feats? And if so
, how does that affect the dedicationrequirements?

Yes, you can select archetypes as normal, in addition to the one you get for free. Ignore the dedication feat requirement for your free archetype, but not any others. For example, if you take the assassin as your free archetype, you could forego your normal class feat to also grab the alchemist dedication, but you would need at least two feats from the alchemist dedication before taking any more archetypes.

I'm guessing the limit on multiclass resiliency feats applies in that case?

Edit: Also, before I move forward, will a witch even fit in to this campaign? Im guessing casters will still be needed, but I just remembered that the Black Ravens are supposed to be witch hunters. I have a few other concepts in mind if you think I should stick with a more martial theme.

I actually wasn’t aware there was a limit on resiliency feats, it never really came up in any of my games. Could you point me towards where you found that rule? My gut answer is yes it still applies though, so that someone isn’t double-dipping and having an outrageous number of hit points.

Who better to hunt witches than a witch herself? There’s definitely a place for you in the Black Ravens. Could even have a subunit that specializes in studying witchcraft.

Gamemastery guide p.194, the paragraph titled "Playing With Free Archetypes". It recommends that any feat that scales based on your number of archetype feats should only be allowed to be taken a number of times equal to half the character's level.

Zabiják Obrů Velitel Štír Jezdce Mocné Kladivo

This is his nickname. Zabiják Obrů Velitel Štír Jezdce Mocné Kladivo is his full name (and still growing as he gathers more achievements) and also includes a nod to his position as an officer...but the weak-skinned humans don't seem to like saying it, so Mighty Zabi settled for something they could say.Captain Zabi of the Mystic Hammer, 1st Patrol of the 9th Squadron Scouts
Ancestry and Heritage (plus specific Draconic Exemplar)Bronze Strongjaw Kobold
Class and Subclass (Hybrid Study, in the case of Magus)Sparkling Targe Magus
Free ArchetypeCavalier
Deep Background, just went with what was fitting. Strength and Intelligence, Northern Draconic Rulers Lore, Survival Skill, Train Animal Feat. Effectively trained for the slapshot excuse of a Calvary northern kobolds have, which consists of grabbing random scary critters and training them to be mounts...then riding around their rocky, mountainous homeland in 5 man patrols.Rock Rider
AlignmentChaotic Good
Opting to go with the leadership route. Randomly created a 9th Squadron (aka, cavalry company) devoted to scouting, of which Zabi leads the 1st Patrol (which would be around the right size for leadership at this level). Squadron, patrol, etc. up to GM fiat, ofc.Blackravens Captain, Cavalry Scout

With this character, I will be using Czech to represent Draconic. The look and sound I consider to be a good fit. That's the foundation for draconic things like phrases he may use, and of course his actual name.Additional Note
