A strange new world, Chapter 1

The winds of change don’t come often, but when they blow worlds are shaped. From the barren rocky vistas that shape the countryside of the stone planet of the wind blew. From the murky depths of the never ending Lifespring waters of Atlantis the winds blew. From the passionate heart of Serenity, the very core of light and heat, the fiery unapproachable planet of Freyix the winds blew. These myriad worlds, and many more, have come to exist in the realm of Serenity. It has been millennia since the origin stories were conceived. Many times have the winds blown across the face of the lands, new tides in rulers and kingdoms, laws and war, trade and knowledge. Many times again will the winds blow and reshape all that is into what will be.

It is a heavy wind that blows through the trees on a cloudy, dark night. The scent of rain carried thick in the air. The trees rustled in the breeze with eager anticipation of the storm shown in their silvered leaves. Like so many grinning faces the leaves reflected the campfire’s light. Looking up, Seddik scowled. “Don’t be hav’n enough wood to last the night and this be blowin’ in now too?” The surly dwarf stood up stretching with a fire poker in his hand. His keen vision had no trouble picking out the logs littering the floor of the woods. Finding a log that wasn’t damp with moist or rot was another. Turning, he scanned his campsite, meager as his possessions were, and sighed. Looking at his lean-to, he shuddered at the thought of sticking it out in a heavy storm. He took a few steps away from the fire and inhaled deeply. Claiming to have an innate sense of weather, he trusted his sailor’s instincts. Unfortunately, all he smelled was smoke and mildew. “Won’t be long now, so I supposes I’d best be gettin’ on and finding somewhere better to bunker down.”

It didn’t take long for the dwarf to pack up his meager possessions. He only paused momentarily to stare at the fire before grabbing a few logs with ends already lit before heading out down a game trail nearby. Making his way along the woods at night was not a problem, nevertheless Seddick kept a careful eye out for anywhere that might serve as suitable shelter to the coming storm. He could feel the pressure changes in the wind which told of harder times to come, a sensation many sailors knew to dread on the open waters or across the Eternal Sea. Ahead the trail turned sharply away from a clearing but the implications were lost on him. Stumbling ahead through the brush and forging his own path he burst out into a stony clearing with several archways scattered around the perimeter. He knew something was wrong with the place when even the winds seemed to avoid it. The trees around the edge of the clearing didn’t stir with the coming storms temper. Rather, they shivered with the pulse of power that emanated from the ground.

As Seddick took stock of his surroundings, he saw first one, then several of the stony archways start to glow. The hum of power in the air made his beard tingle. He realized his hand was starting to sweat with his constant gripping the hilt of his hammer. Releasing his grasp, he started vigorously wiping his palms off and making warding symbols across his chest. “They killed me.. those bloody basterds killed me by abandoning me here. I knew them throwing me overboard was death… but did it have to be magic?” Cursing, he backed away slowly from the center of the clearing hoping to reach an edge before anything else happened…

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~A Mad World for Max~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The breeze carried a heavy scent of blood as Max stood staring at the scene unfolding before him. Villagers were fighting masked creatures who fought with wicked speed and deadly accuracy. He still didn't know how many raiders were there even though light from burning houses blotted out most of the shadows he could see. It had unfolded faster than he'd been able to control. Now it looked as though everything he'd grown up and loved was coming to an end in a single night. While rushing through town Max managed to save first a few individuals, then, as he moved further towards his own family home, he found Lamonozia through the chaos.
It was a dream and a nightmare, all aflame, with cries of the wounded and dying from every direction. He could hear the echoing of strange, inhuman sounds coming from some of the raiders. Imagination running wild with the implications, he tried closing with his mentor only to have his cries fall on deaf ears. She moved with the same fluid grace he'd witnessed in their years training together. Now, instead of practice dummies and wild animals, she fought trained killers by the score. Her ability to handle so many attackers and still put one down after another astounded him. Hypnotized momentarily by her grace, he almost missed the axe coming for his head. A dagger from Lamonozia, and a shout that scared him nearly as much, jolted his awareness of his surroundings. The blood sprayed across his neck from the impaled raider who fell away screaming that inhuman scream of pain.
The flow of time seemed to speed up from there. Max turned back to his mentor only to see her fleeing away towards the town's cemetery. Keeping pace but still too far away to call out, Max couldn't believe his eyes when Lamonozia charged right into the cemetery and through a newly opened tomb entrance he'd never known was there. The statue of some unknown figure lay pushed over revealing the entrance but he didn't have time to examine it in his pursuit of his mentor.
'...and like shall be drawn unto like...
The voice echoed through his head but there was no speaker in sight. Almost nothing was in sight until he found the torchlight at the bottom of the stairs. The air was dank with the smell of cold, wet dirt. it was clear no wind had passed through these chambers and connecting tunnels for ages, and yet despite the time Max was surprised that dust did not cover everything. It seemed as though these chambers were used, recently and often.
Rounding a corner in pursuit of the torchlight, Max saw something he'd thought he'd never see. Lamonozia stood clutching a bleeding wound in her chest while a masked raider stood before her. The raider's hands started to glow revealing the stone he'd known was part of prophesy. The glow from the raider's hand matched the strange doorway behind him. Lamonozia charged the raider with the stone and both fell through the now brightly glowing doorway. At a glance Max could see that strange runes surrounded the threshold but that a murky darkness enveloped the raider, Lamonozia, and the glow from the stone all at once.
Without thinking, he threw himself through at a full sprint....
(Are we supposed to meet up with you here? If so I can probably figure out something and we can go from there. Might be a way to start play just by getting everyone together and going where we can until a DM intervenes.)
