GuiltyYou are a lawbreaker – the worst of the worst. Too dangerous to live amongst the good people of Talingarde, they dragged you in chains before a magistrate and condemned you. They sent you to the worst prison in the land and there they forever marked you. They held you down and branded you with a runic F. You are forsaken. You won’t be at Branderscar Prison for long. Branderscar is only a holding pen. In three days – justice comes. In three days – everything ends.

What a pity. If only there was a way out of this stinking rat-hole. If only there was a way to escape. If only…

No. No one has ever escaped from Branderscar Prison. This is where your story ends.

Or is it?

No, of course not. This is where it will begin!

In the kingdom of Talingarde, many crimes may send you to Branderscar Prison, but the sentence has but one meaning. You are wicked and irredeemable. Each of you received the same greeting when you arrived. You were held down by rough hands and branded upon the arm with a runic F. The mark signifies ‘forsaken’ and the painful scar is indelible proof that each of you has betrayed the great and eternal love of Mitra and his chosen mortal vassals.

Condemned, you face at best a life of shackles and servitude in the nearby salt mines. Others might await the “gentle” ministrations of the inquisitors so that co-conspirators may be revealed and confessions extracted. Perhaps, some of you will be spared this ordeal. Perhaps instead you have come to Branderscar to face the final judgment. In three days, the executioner arrives and the axe falls or the pyre will be lit. Through fire or steel, your crimes will be answered.

You have all been chained together in the same communal cell dressed in nothing but filthy, tattered rags. Manhandled and mistreated, any finery you once possessed is either ruined or long lost. No special treatment has been given any prisoner – male or female, commoner or noble – all of the forsaken are bound and imprisoned together. Your feet are secured by iron cuffs tethered by one long chain. Your arms are secured to the wall above by manacles. A guard is posted right outside the cell day and night. Little thought is given to long term accommodations. At Branderscar, justice comes swift and sure.

Escape seems hopeless. You have all been well searched and every attempt to conceal anything on your person has failed. And if you could somehow slip your bonds and fly out of this prison, where would you go? Who from your former life would want anything to do with the forsaken? Despised, alone and shackled – all that you can do now is await your doom.

For each of you, your old life is over. For each of you, hope is a fading memory. For each of you, justice will be fairly meted. And who can blame fair Talingarde after what each of you has done?
The Nessian KnotThe players will be chosen to become part of something far greater than themselves. They will be chosen to become members of the 9th knot, the Nessian Knot. This knot shall be more elite and ruthless than all of the others! I am looking for interesting characters with rich backgrounds and fascinating personalities who will fulfill their destinies as paragons of evil! I will be choosing 4 players based on quality of writing and how appealing I find their character.
Expected posting rate will be 1 per week.
A Note About This GameThis is my second attempt to run this game. Last iteration experienced some player drama which made it difficult to continue and ultimately, the game died. I am hoping to avert this. Please note that this game might stretch the limits of the PG-13 limits of the site, but should not break them. Also note that your characters will be fairly helpless in the beginning and I expect clever in-game ideas and strategies to overcome the initial situation, not tricksy mechanical tricks. I will actively stifle any attempts to cheat out of the situation with mechanics I may have missed so be forewarned.
Accepted SourcesAll Paizo material. I am open to other sources on a case-by-case basis. All Path of War material is banned. Psionics are banned. Spheres of Power and Might are allowed. Occult Adventures are allowed.
ApplicationsApplications should follow a fairly standard format with, at minimum, the following info:

Character Creation
  • Characters will be built using either a 30 point buy or a slightly modified version of Focus and Foible. Rather than rolling 1d10+7, you will roll 1d8+10. Your Focus is 18 rather than 15. Your Foible is 8.
  • Maximum starting stat with point buy is 18, before racial adjustments.
  • Characters will start with 6,000 XP, using Fast Advancement, so will be level 4.
  • Your character's race can be any core race. If you choose one of the core races, you can choose any additional Racial trait available for that race for free. This is in addition to swapping racial traits if you so choose, as normal.
  • Your character's race can also be any of the following Standard races: Catfolk, Duergar, Gnoll, Grippli, Goblin, Hobgoblin, Kobold, Lizardfolk, Orc, Ratfolk, Skinwalker, or Undine. If the race you choose has some sort of light sensitivity or blindness, you may take any Day Runner alternative racial trait for it for free, if available.
  • Your character's race can also be one of the following Advanced Races: Dhampir, Drow, Fetchling or Tiefling. Tieflings get the Fiendish Heritage Feat as a Bonus Feat, if they so choose.
  • Characters will be Gestalt. Spheres of power use Spheres Gestalt Rules.
  • Optimization level of the character can be high, but don't break the game. Use your judgement.
  • Characters can have 2 Traits, 1 Drawback. Characters gain a 3rd bonus trait as per their chosen crime as a bonus trait. (Drawback grants a potential 4th Trait as usual)
  • Characters can have up to 2 Flaws. Each Flaw grants 1 bonus Feat. The Flaws MUST actually affect your character in a significant way or I will assign a 3rd Flaw without benefit of my choosing.
  • Starting Gold will be standard WBL for 4th level characters (6,000 gp), plus an additional 3,000 gp for your character's preferred item. With the exception of your preferred weapon, no single item can be worth more than 50% of your starting wealth. Note that you will not have any items at all at the start of the game, but you might find them later.
  • Max HP for every HD.
  • We will use Fractional Base Bonuses.
  • You can choose to have your character be older than adult age, but no bonuses will accrue past middle age. Penalties will accrue as normal if you really want your character even older than middle-aged.
  • Firearms of any kind are banned.
  • Option to become Mythic will present itself later on.

Interesting interesting.

So question, because it is once a week, are you doing modifications to combat to make sure it doesn't slow down to a death crawl?

Also is there a source we can look up the Force and Foible rules/point buy?

That's the player's guide for the D&D 5E conversion, I'm assuming we'd want the orginal Pathfinder version?

One final set of final questions as I think about this is will mounted combat be viable in this campaign?

Has no use for Asmodeus and societies, and is generally concerned with her own wants and needs but is a follower of Pack Law and a Believer in the strength of the Pack and will follow a stronger leader's goals, until such time that leader proves to be weak and must be replaced, or those Goals do not suit her own purpose

Physical Description:
Karuz is the very image of a primitive savage Half Orc, Born and raised feral in the wilds she shuns material possessions and most forms of clothing, Tall even for a half orc, with the impressive physique common of her race, she is a Statuesque amazon of a woman with solid lithe muscles from a lifetime of physical struggle and toil, with the scars to prove it, although her height can at times be difficult to determine as she often crouches and hunches like an animal when she is stationery and even when she is moving at a slower pace. She carries heavy facial scaring from a bear attack in her youth and she makes no attempts to hide it, and has more pronounced Tusks than other Half orcs

Personality:
How do you judge a personality at its weakest moment? Karuz appears to be a wild creature, a savage panicked beast in a cage, cruel and merciless and ready to snap and bite and claw at any who get too close, but is that all that she is? after all, even the most loyal and affectionate of pets can become that way when mistreated and afraid. Only time will tell what she will become and how she will respond to those around her.

Background:
They say to know a person you need to know where they came from and who they came from, that a persons lineage can tell you who they are. Karuz has no idea who she is or where she comes from, and she truly gives no thought to that fact or have any interest in finding out. She is..she was one of the Pack, what more is there to know? Karuz is an outcast, a half breed, Abandoned by her parents as an infant and cast out on the river, was she the result of an attack by her Orcish parent and cast adrift by a human mother, who was ashamed but could not bring herself to end the child's life herself and left that to natures whims? Was she the result of loving parents who sent her away to save her life from those who would not accept that love? Was she a child of the Iraen? the Yutak? The Savage North? Who knows, all she has know for her life was the Pack, and now the Cell.

The Tales and Saga's all tell stories of the children found on the riverbanks, powerful lost princes and princesses found by the common folk and raised in loving homes only to find their destiny and become great heroes and legends, oh what a wonderful tale it is to hear. So much better than the truth, that children cast to the river are claimed by it, lost in it, for every one who is found, hundreds more are lost. Karuz was one of the lucky ones, she was found, though not by Man but by Beast. Why this pack of feral dogs did not claim the screaming green child with fangs as a meal she never knew but from that day on, she was one of the Pack and she lived a simple and happy life, a life of struggle and hardship that forged her into the creature she was now but it was not without its joys as well, she had a home, she had warmth amongst the pack, she had food (most of the time) and she had family, what more could anyone truly want and need than that? where the trappings of civilisation really what made people happy when they came with so many restrictions and rules?

For 22 Winters Karuz lived her simple happy life, her Pack had taken up a home in a quiet part of the Caer Bryr, where a small unknown pass cuts through the mountains at the corner where the Borderlands, The Heartlands and the Caer Bryr meet. Untouched and unexplored by any other, except herself and her Pack for many years until the men of Lord Drune came and found the Yellow Singing Stone and her life changed, she was taken and dragged across the continent far from her home and thrown in a cell at Branderscar, branded and abandoned to await her Death and plot her savage revenge.

RP Example:
In the small dark cell, Karuz paced like a restless animal, which really is exactly what she was, a caged animal waiting for her execution and contemplating what brought her here, who brought her here. She did not even know the mans name but she would never forget his scent or his face and when she saw him again she would tear out his throat like she had tried to do earlier. tried and failed, not fully understanding who he was or what power he wielded.

In Karuz's world, Power meant strength, cunning, dominance of the world around her, but to Lord Antras Drunethe man who destroyed her world, power meant wealth and status. Wealth and power he possessed because of the Yellow singing rocks which Karuz and her Pack had built their home upon. She did not know why he craved this "gold" as she had heard them call it, you couldn't eat it and it didn't throw sparks to keep you warm but the man had been willing to end the lives of his pack to possess it, slaughter her pack to get to it.

That had started Karuz's war of attrition on the rival pack who came for her home, not that she knew that was the name of what she was doing. Karuz was not a dumb beast like everyone seemed to think, she was cunning, and smart in her own way but she was by no means a book smart thinker and not well read or well learned, she in fact could not read the paper marks at all but even she knew that amongst the pack claiming her land, the Alpha was not there and to truly destroy the pack she would need to draw out the Alpha and kill him. So over the weeks that followed since Lord Drune's men claimed and attempted to Mine the Gold from her home, Karuz struck at the men and their operation relentlessly until the Lord himself was forced to come to the camp to find out exactly what was stopping his men from strip mining the area for his own pockets.

That's when she struck, a wild savage beast springing from the jungle canopy to strike down the Man, the Alpha and put an end to it. Perhaps if Karuz had been more book smart she would have hesitated when she saw the man, would have recognised the power he wielded, Yes he had status and wealth, political acumen and a pack the size Karuz had never seen (although to her they were a large but physically weak pack) but Drune was more than just a petty noble, he was an Arcanist and possessed true magical power the likes of which the Feral half-Orc outcast had never experienced, she never even got close to her target before his magic struck her down and she woke up in a cage being taken back to his home, a trophy from his "hunt" he would laughingly claim, not realising that although she was not book smart and could not read, she could understand his words just fine.

Not that she let on she could understand him and his men, she had no desire to talk to these men and they didn't attempt to engage her in conversation either, to them she was just a savage half-breed creature to be taunted and would be put on display it seemed to appease the lords Ego. Over the course of the journey though the caged panicked animal that she was injured several of the lords men when they got too close and Lord Drune decided an example needed to be made lest he appear weak and not able to protect his own men from a common beast, when they arrived back in "civilisation" a mockery of a trail was held and the beast was sentenced to death, to be one of the Forsaken and thrown in a cell.

First with others, but then on her own when she struck down her fellow cellmates after they got too close and tried to dominate her themselves, Everything in the world revolved around the pack, prisoners were no different and even amongst the lowest of society, tribal law rules, packs were formed for protection and power and prisoners always thought they were the ones strong enough to impose their will on others to be the leader of the Pack. They picked the wrong target when they tried that with Karuz.

Her smile was cruel, feral, as she retreated to the corner of the dark cell she had claimed as her own, the blood of the latest pretender, a human this time, still dripped from her fingertips, as the others cowered against the cell door and called for the guards in a panic to move them somewhere else, her laughter chilling even the guards as they relented and moved the remaining men, looking at each other as if it ask which of them was going into her cage to remove the body, surprise on their faces as she finally spoke aloud "You Prey are all so weak"

Mounted Combat may be possible in the later chapters of this adventure path, but not at all in the beginning. The PC's begin the game without equipment, without companions, and without much hope of survival at all. Mounted Combat is not likely to be often possible or useful even in the later chapters, though this may depend on choices the players make.

As for Vile Leadership, it is not banned, but PC's do not qualify for it at level 4.
