DM,

Combat. Just her first action of every encounter. Sorry.
The small errors, a typo.

Thanks!

THUMO
right-aligned image

Name: Thumo the Grabber
Race: Half-Orc
Class: Lore Bard
Alignment: CH/G

Background: Sailor
Personality Trait: I like a job well done, so long as I can convince someone else to do it.
Personality Trait: I'm smart, brave, funny . . . but lazy.
Ideal: Each of us should be free to do (or not do) what they wish.
Bond: I died due to my carelessness. I will do better this time.
Flaw: I never pass up the opportunity for a nap.
Flaw: I snore, loudly.

Combat Flaw: Thumo will not use piercing or edged weapons and gets queasy at the sight of blood. Can add a loss of 1 round of combat if he ever kills anyone if you wish to make this stronger. That's why he prefers to grapple or immobilize opponents.

Anti-Proficiency Skill Deception. Yeah, I know, strange choice for a bard, but Thumo has difficulty telling lies.

Appearance: Thumo is a big boy. Not just tall, though he's pretty tall; not just wide, though he's pretty wide; he's massive, with a jutting stomach, big breasts, and cheeks that force his eyes into an almost closed squint . . . when they aren't actually closed in sleep. He isn't the most orcish looking orc; his skin is more an olive color, his teeth aren't terribly prominent over his triple (quintuple?) chins, but sheer size makes him intimidating looking.

Personality: When you talk to him though, Thumo isn't scary at all. His voice is higher than you might expect, he smiles a lot and tells jokes. He likes to sing and play the penny whistle or support others with the bones when it's their turn. He can even play the uilleann pipes though there isn't much call for it. He is always slapping others on the back, nudging them with an elbow, or playfighting. What he really loves to do though, is wrestle. He saw sumo wrestling once and it soon turned into his dream. But sit him down and try to talk seriously to him or get him to focus on his studies and his eyes start closing.

Backstory: Let's be honest, Thumo was not a good sailor. Oh, he was strong, brave, extremely quick climbing the stays, and good in a storm, but being a sailor means always being busy. Thumo was, well, lazy. When put to work holystoning the decks, he would work his way to a rail and lean against it, his hands moving less and less until called back to work (usually with a boot in the butt). In a fight, his sheer size and bulk were terrifying but he would get nauseous at the sight of blood. And don't even think about asking him to gut fish, the other sailors still gave him a hard time about throwing up into their catch. Who wants to eat that?

But other than the captain and mates, who generally agreed he was worthless and would make good sharkbait, Thumo was popular with his shipmates. He played the tinwhistle or the bones, sang in a decent bass, had a sense of humor, and won money for them in wrestling matches in port.

Unfortunately, these halcyon days on the open sea were not to last. On watch, high in the forward masthead, Thumo's eyes grew heavy and soon he was snoring. Releasing his hold, he plummeted into the sea. It was night and the ship had a strong tailwind and couldn't, or wouldn't, come around for him and down down he sank into the dark depths, thrashing around until he grew tired and just let himself sink.

And then, praise be to He doesn't know who saved him, but that had always been his favorite god in prayers and who else would care?Kord, he was sitting in the middle of a street, his clothes damp, but not soaked, and alive. How? What? He had no idea but it was a new lease on life. He was going to be different this time. He would be a credit to his teachers and his mates. He would make a difference in the world. But first, maybe a quick nap.

The Knight of TearsGunhild Mara
(a.k.a Gunnie)
right-aligned image

Race: Human
Class: Fighter (Battle Master)
Background: Soldier's Daughter
  • Trait: I try to be polite and respectful to everyone.
  • Ideal: My lot is to lay down my life in defense of others.
  • Bond: My honor is my life.
  • Flaw: I obey the law, even if the law causes misery.
Dramatic Flaw: I want to be popular so much that I become a mumbling, incoherent mess when I know people are watching me.
Combat Weakness: Gunnie is affected by Bane whenever someone she respects can see her. Her bar for respect is very low.
Skill Inability: I don't want to seem weak or needy. Asking someone to do something for me would make me want to cry.

(I'm tempted to make this Performance, but she's actually so bad at performing for people that it becomes an altogether even more entertaining spectacle.)
Persuasion.

Appearance: Despite her true nature, Gunhild has the appearance of a calm, collected young woman. Her posture is proud and firm; clothes and armor fashionable and well-maintained; her voice clear and fine as a soft bell's chime. However, when she knows someone is watching her Gunnie's intense fear of judgement causes her stoic demeanor and all her built-up resolve to crumble.

Personality: Gunhild is, at her core, a good girl. She has a love for goodness and honor that makes her want to help others in any way she can. She can be surprisingly reliable when no one is watching and in a perfect world Gunhild would likely be a Great Hero. However, Gunnie's want to be loved and respected is so extreme that even a single person watching can make her become panicked and make all her natural ability implode.

The worst part is, Gunnie is aware of all of this. She knows how capable she is and why she keeps failing and it torments her to no end.

Backstory: Gunhild was born the daughter of a soldier, and after it became apparent that she had no talent for cooking or sewing she took to her father's ways instead. She loved the quiet, direct work involved in soldiery and was quite good at learning the forms of the raven (not that she had ever been able to prove that when anyone was watching). Gunhild died on the day after her Last Vigil; an all-night watch to represent the transition from civilian to soldier. On that dreary morning her dreams of solitary watches and brush-up were shattered. Her post was to instead help train the new recruits.

A silent admirer of hers, who somehow knew, had spread the word of how good she was at the forms. That made the higher ups interested. It made her old comrades interested. And those new recruits knew to expect something special with how everyone was watching her.

Wrenched suddenly into the spotlight, Gunnie immediately became flustered and ended up dying in a training accident against a straw dummy.

Gunnie was given the Choice by the God of Guardians, Helm, whose cool stare and questions of how she could fail so horribly made Gunhild fold into a choking mess of grief. Before Helm even suggested the Choice she swallowed her pride, lent her head and begged for a chance to do things right.

Helm gave her I'm thinking a Fairy Stone with a Tatl-type fairy to give her advice and pester her into doing things she doesn't want to do.a boon to ensure she would.

Well, no duplication on anti-proficiency skills so far. And no knowledge skills nerfed. Fun times.

Yeah, I was kind of afraid that everyone will just pick knowledge stuff as their anti-prof...
But I'm happy that I was wrong.

Just want to point out that I'm a front line melee type too. Not good at it as I have meh hit points, weak armor class, and I get sick at the sight of blood, but I'm out there. :-)

Posting my WIP. Should be up today or tomorrow. Let me know if you think I should make some adjustments. He's going to hopefully be able to use poisons heavily. I'm building him with proficiency with poisoner's kit (subclass) and alchemist kit (background). His build is pretty heavily reliant upon these things but if you would prefer another way or for me to try something else I'd be more than happy to move in whatever direction you think would be best!

Senic - "Is this text tiny or is it just me?"
right-aligned image

Name: Senic Squint
Race: Halfling
Class: Rogue (Assassin)
5e background: Criminal/Spy
  • Trait: I don’t pay attention to the risks in a situation. Never tell me the odds.
  • Trait: The best way to get me to do something is to tell me I can’t do it.
  • Ideal: People. I’m loyal to my friends, not to any ideals, and everyone else can take a trip down the Styx for all I care
  • Bonds: My ill-gotten gains go to support my family.
  • Flaw: I have a “tell” that reveals when I’m lying.
  • Additional personality flaw: Poor eyesight/organization/terrible handwriting
Additional combat flaw:
When you use a potion roll a D4.
1 - It's a potion! Success in using potion.
2 - It's the wrong potion! Use a potion of another kind than the one intended. If no other potions counts as success.
3 - It's poison but I noticed! Lose action if in combat. Need to repeat roll again to try and find potion or give up.
4 - It's a potion (Oh wait no it isn't!)! Take stored or prepared poison instead.
Contingency = If no poison in equipment: Use random liquidish substance in backpack (oil, alcohol, glue, water, etc.)

When you use a poison roll a D4.
1 - It's poison! Success in applying/using poison.
2 - It's the wrong poison! Use a poison of another kind than the one intended. If no other poisons counts as success.
3 - It's a potion, but I noticed! Lose action if in combat. Need to repeat roll again to try and find potion or give up.
4 - It's poison (Oh wait, no it isn't!) - Apply stored potion instead. If used on a weapon to attack heals the target after it takes damage. If used in another way effects may vary.
Contingency = If no potion in equipment: Use random liquidish substance in backpack (oil, alcohol, glue, water, etc.)

Anti-Proficiency: Perception

Appearance: Pretty average height for a halfing but walks with the bravado of someone much taller. His attire is common looking though often he can be seen strapped with all sorts of pouches and pockets. He carries a large bag that he struggles to search through and can often be seen squinting when reading or trying to make out finer details. He's a hand talker and waves his arms around, gesturing with reckless abandon whenever he's overly passionate about something.

Personality:
Ever overconfident in his abilities, Senic is boastful and a showoff. He believes himself to be a master alchemist as well as assassin as well as thief as well as card player as well as drinker as well as . . . (it's a long list of things he believes he is good at). However, being only mortal, there are times when Senic fails. When the sting of loss or embarrassment hits him the young halfling denies it wholeheartedly but turns a deep red. A person can tell he's lying about his shame by the way his eyes become wide and his speech quickens. For any other lie they need only look at his fingers. Senic reveals different unspoken truths depending on how they move or where they are placed.

Picture of the character:

Backstory:

Hidden in a great metropolis was a not so great potion store run by the Squint family. The Squints were a small halfling household who for generations made potions for the people of their city. The quality of their work was good but their customer service was terrible. You see, their surname, Squint, was earned because of their habit of narrowing their eyes anytime they read anything. Often times they would have difficulties understanding their own handwriting and would mix up their clients orders, sending them off with the wrong item. This made the Squints a rather unpopular choice for many and so inevitably money became a problem for them. While Mr. And Mrs. Squint were at a loss as to what to do, their son Senic would not give up so easily.

Senic was a good alchemist, albeit his sight was as poor as his parents. He was also someone who got bored of doing the same thing all the time. Taking his alchemical prowess to the next level: Senic began experimenting with poisons to sell on the black market. A natural and completely normal decision with absolutely no moral quandaries. From there he took the interest of an assassins guild that took him in because they saw his 'natural talent' but in all actuality he was simply being used as a distraction for guards. He revealed himself, of his own accord, almost immediately and gloated about how he was a master assassin who would fell them all. As Senic did this he was showing off his dagger, balancing it precariously on a finger. In truth it was an impressive feat and demonstration of dexterity. However, the poison he thought he had been using was supposed to only activate when it came in contact with blood. As it turns out the poison he had applied was skin permeable and killed him shortly after.

The deity who awakened Senic was not a god of alchemy or assassins but rather Waukeen, The Golden Lady. She saw something resourceful in the young man. He took initiative where his parents did not to take responsibility for their financial well being. Though his methods were questionable, Senic's determination saved his parents business. A shower of gold coins and soon he would awaken in a new world.

Why be a Hero? Senic want to be great, he wants to be admired. If he were a hero he would have both of these things. He's not particularly malicious but maybe is too willing to try anything once.

Senic Squintsight

It is an interesting flaw idea.

However, I think you need to adjust the 4s a little.
For example:
-You want to use a potion
-Roll a 4
-But you have no poison
What now?

I suggest to add something like: "If no poison (or potion in the other one) in the equipment, randomly use another liquid-ish thing that you posses (for example: oil, glue, alcohol, water)"

I love this idea! I'm going to have to get him to stock up on some random items now. There's just too much potential here.

So just to clarify I'd just be changing what would happen if I rolled a 4 (IE. So that if there is no poison or potion I use some other random substance in Senic's backpack)

Name: Doctavian Velsaress
Race: Human
Class: wizard Evocer
5e background: Sage specialty, research
Personality traits:
1 I use polysyllabic words that convey the impression of great erudition
2I’ve read every book in the world’s greatest libraries—or I like to boast that I have.
Ideal: Knowledge. The path to power and self-improvement is through knowledge. (Neutral)
Bond: I sold my soul for knowledge. I hope to do great deeds and win it back
Flaw: I speak without really thinking through my words, invariably insulting others.
Additional personality flaw: I am horribly, horribly awkward in social situations

Additional combat flaw: When I roll a natural 1 with a spell attack, I hit myself instead of an enemy

One skill with anti-proficiency: intimidate

Appearance: Doctavian is a tall, very skinny man who has disheveled black hair, large glasses, and a manic grin. He wears white robes lined with pockets and keeps his bat familiar Cornelius on the inside. He is often twitchy and giggles when excited.

Personality: Doctavian is a brilliant, socially inept, ego maniacal, insecure wizard. he acts prideful and boasts to others in order to cover up his loneliness and insecurity. When hurt by others, he rants of revenge but lacks the courage to follow through. When he fails at a task, he falls into a depression.

Backstory:
-The story: Doctavian was a prodigy when it came to learning magic, unfortunately as so often happens with wizards, his brilliance went hand in hand with his madness. He frequently disregarded safety in order to satisfy his curiosity in his pursuit of knowledge and was eventually expelled from the mages college after creating giant ants which escaped his lab and became a public menace. His became an adventurer to fund his research. His current goal is to create a spell that conjures a swarm of exploding suicide squirrels.
-How did you die?: Doctavian blew himself up with one of his own spells
-What deity sent you to the new world? Doctavian regularly prayed to and complained to Azuth, god of wizards. When he died, the god chose to give him a second chance
-Why are you trying to be a hero? Doctavian wants to be a hero to fund his research, and because he secretly, desperately yearns for validation and acceptance.
