Hello I am intrigued by the setting but I really want to know how the Druid Circle of Shifting works. I can't find it online without paying. Would you mind telling me in detail (by PM, if you like)? $20 is rather steep just to see if a subclass is any good.
No worries, I'll see what I can do. Just to re-emphasize as well though that there is no prerequisite into purchasing the setting as I will ensure that PC's have the details they need to start the game inside the forum itself.
Hi I would like to give this a try. My skills are weak, but if they prove enough i'll stick with the game, in spite of the effort required to match everyone else. Any relevant information i could think of, i placed below.
My experience is limited to the introductory game they offer on this site.
During the NPSG, i think i applied enough focus on details to give my character realism. I liked most the parts where i could be creative and improvise - the parts where there was room for more than the expected.
My approach to role playing and storytelling is light. I wouldn't delve into story stuff so much that it becomes a burden (i do enjoy writing for the freedom it can offer, first of all), but i would try to give everything due attention.
I don't have inclinations or preferences for anything of the setting. It's writing itself that i will rely on for support while adapting to the demands of this game: The satisfaction that a balanced piece of writing can offer. I'll learn what i can from the others while playing, but i don't have a prior knowledge base to draw from.
External matters and thoughts or behaviors related to them are not my natural focus. So i will incline away from those also in role playing and storytelling. Which does not mean neglect - just less emphasis.
I would have great difficulty with gender roles, so i hope the game does not need that.
If you would like an idea about my storytelling and writing skills, here is a link to a Library post of mine. You may want to ignore the OOS buttons and [ ] inserts.
I may be able to handle 2 moderate size and content posts a week, but 3 may be too much. 1 is ideal.
As a last thought - I prefer to keep personal RL stuff out of conversations and just relate to everyone else as another writer and human being
I wouldn't mind taking on a character you propose for me, as long as a few personal details (like morality) are open for negotiation. That is - with a view to assembling a group with better survival chances; or that is more interesting, class-wise.
I think i could handle any class that does not require more than general knowledge. That might leave out technology based characters... In the given order, i feel more attracted to: the Kami Domain Cleric, the traditional Fighter, the Monk Priest, the Rogue Detective, the Ju Wai-Shu Sorceror, and the Mage Wizard. My only experience ever was with a Wizard, up to level 2. Of the races, Human may be the easiest to manage.
A simple commoner background might suit my lack of knowledge best: farmer, fisherman, peddler, small-time ronin, hermit, and the like. Ties to clans or specific people i would leave to your choice, depending on what you have intended for the game.
It's hard to start with a character that already has half the story behind it. I lack the knowledge and experience to handle something like that well. I built this character for a game that hasn't yet started, and it was long, difficult work.
So i'm afraid i couldn't make much of a first impression. I am willing however to work on details, as you find necessary - should i be accepted. It would be great if you could spare a little time to help with creating a good character
Ronin -- A minor clan retainer in Hakaisuru, Toreeru left service while in his twenties. His sympathies with the less fortunate, and believing the Mists have their root in the common evil, he started on a path of independent guardianship and spiritual pursuit. He became a wandering monk, lending his strength to the defense of villages and travelers, or spending time in solitude, in nature.
Personality:
Willing to make himself an instrument of good, Toreeru strives to diminish his selfish nature. Along with that comes leaving on the world as little an imprint as possible. When needed, he would stand his ground - yet without theatrics, or excess of zeal. And he would remain balanced, and gentle even - if circumstances allow it.
Appearance:
With average physical features and dull colored clothing, Toreeru would hardly stand out in a crowd. Add his quiet demeanor, contained expression, and subtle smile, and it is understandable how he makes little impression in brief encounters. He cares only moderately for his looks - out of necessity mainly, and long periods in the wild often occasion a dirty cloth and grown beard. The occasional wounds of so far did not disable him, leaving as souvenirs only scars - usually hard to spot.
RP Sample:
Bell sounds, clear - then mournful, died out across the field, only the grass trembling briefly behind them. Bowed, hand in prayer posture, Toreeru leaned humbly on his staff, as priest feet passed before him, on the road. "Hi Fu Mi Yo..." - soft, ethereal blessing words floated towards him, and - inside - he bowed deeper, adding his wish for the world's salvation. Steps leaving on the left - an echo answered in the other direction, grew... mixing with snigger of evil anticipation. For a second there, the grass darkened. Straightening up, his eyes still lowered, the monk walked slowly towards the middle of the road, then turned right - taking position in front of the followers. A sudden change in noise - Toreeru turned his head slightly, pricking the ear. "Hseew!" - He dodged, and the shuriken ended up in his staff. Then heavier steps, a whoosh, a roar - Toreeru spinned, sending the falling weight an extra foot forth. The impact shook him a bit, and the noise almost covered the blade thrust... But - not an inch away from the monk's body - the sharp point could only chase him a bit, until losing momentum. "Thud!" - The Oni-Touched fell to the ground senseless. The straw hat's brim rose - The brute had regained balance and came charging... "This Shikome won't be that easy," reasoned Toreeru, preparing for the same circling maneuver. At least, there was no other opponent in sight...

Reason: added Application
Hi writelite, thanks for giving the game some consideration. There are a number of free primers on the DriveThruRPG site as well that will certainly aid when it comes to coming up with a character for consideration. I've attached the link here and added this into the original post as well. Have a look through the primers and if you need any help with putting together a character then shoot me a PM and we can take it from there.
I have no set expectations for the weekly post count and although I've stated 2-3 posts a week above my preference would be to get an idea from all prospective players as to what their preferred posting rate would be and then base the game at a pace that suits everyone.

I have added a conversion and writeup of the character backgrounds found in the PHB, making them more thematically correct with the setting. There will be new background options added for the game that I will put in once the forum becomes available so don't be in a rush to select one at this time as there might be something in there that catches your eye.
Ooh, this setting sounds interesting. Fine, I'll toss in my app.
Name: Yama Gāru Race: Oni-Touched Class: Cleric (Kami) Appearance: Yama is of small stature compared to her more heavyweight cousins, only standing to a measly height of 5'4", nowhere near 10 feet. She's mostly human in features, her figure is that of a young woman ready to marry a husband or wife yet she has the strength to knock out ten men of the strong variety. Her Oni features are obviously prominent, two horns protrude upon her skull, the skin stretched to accommodate and adapt the abnormality instead of piercing through the skin where you can see the horn. Her hands are abnormally sharp, either on purpose or just an Oni trait of hers. She usually wears a light red kimono, though in an unkempt and informal fashion due to the wearer's upbringing.
Personality: Yama is, as the way she dressed herself implies, a brash and loud individual with no modicum of manners and formalities. Yet, despite that and the stigma that her cursed kin have been put through, she loves talking to people, no matter what they think of her. It was just how she was raised.
To those that would know Yama, they would probably be surprised when they find out that she was more astute than what her appearance suggests. She's a kind and caring individual at heart and has a great passion for her studies.
Background: Long ago, there was once a beautiful girl living in her humble and small village. And she had parents that loved her dearly, and she loved them with all her heart. However, fate was cruel, when she reached adolescence, her mark was apparent for all to see. The villagers had lost many loved ones by the Mists, many more by the Oni Warlords of the mountains. So they gave in to their fear and hatred, they went to her family home to kill the young girl. But her parents still wanted to defend their daughter despite her change, yet....
She managed to leave the village, the blood of her parents were apparent on her clothes and hands, she was shocked and horrified by what she saw. Yet, she couldn't stop running. She ran and ran, passing by the fields, the trees, the rivers, and the valley. To finally the mountain. She laid there and soon passed out of exhaustion.
She was alone, a child with no parents and the world was now constantly out to get her. Yet, good fortune smiled upon her fate, for the mountain she found herself on was a place inhabited by the fantastical. The spirit of the mountain resides here, immortal spirits, and they have repelled the forces of Akuma from ever stepping on their land. When they detected the presence of the mist, they came forth only to find a weeping girl, exhausted and covered in blood.
These Kami's stayed their hands and decided to take pity on the child, they took her under their care. This marked the day where that child and those spirits formed a familial bond that lasted for years and years. The child grew to a woman that trained under the spirits and was an expert warrior. Though, she was also an aspiring scholar, always listening to the teachings and history that the spirits would provide. She was never given a name, nor could she remember what her original name (either because she subconsciously receded that memory or by the Kami's will due to her trauma), though she took the name Yama Gāru, it was a name some villagers called her and it stuck with her. She was reborn as Yama Gāru, girl of the mountains.
RP Sample: Near the Fuson mountains, there lay a village. In these mountains, the villagers were once under siege by bandits and Invaders, during times where the Mists is ever increasing, acts like this were not uncommon. Though, somehow, banditry made a sudden drop and the village was suddenly at peace. The villagers believe that this was another intervention by the Mountain God, the mountain had many but one was always the loudest and most fearsome. It had the form of a demon and fought like one, reigning utter hell upon their enemies. Said demon also comes into the village on a regular basis.
Yama downs up her sake,"Ah, that hit the spot, thanks boss." she says, giving the scared out of his wits owner a bow and taking off. It was some stroke of luck that she finally found a place where she's given a warm reception. Not a lot of folks are as generous as these villagers, sure some might say that their a bit too generous with all these gifts they keep giving her and some just gives out praises for her deeds, though all she did was scare off some hotshots with no bite to them, and everyone just keeps embellishing what happened,"It's a bit embarrassing honestly." she says, unable to hide her smile at this amount of kindness, it reminds her of something. Maybe it's just her imagination but she can't help but feel sad,".... I, I should, I should give those transparent old folks their portion of gifts. Yeah, I'm sure they'll appreciate it." she says, shrugging such unnecessary thoughts, she checked her bag which was filled with gifts which she plans to give to the Mountain Gods as offerings,"Hmm, I hope they won't show any hard feelings for me for giving these gifts away to some old codgers." she says as she makes her leave of the village, it was good company but it was time to make her return to the mountains.
And so the villagers once again gave a sigh of relief as the most fearsome Mountain God left their town. It is a custom that they offer such spirit gifts in order for good fortune to arrive or less they anger it's wrath. They named this Mountain God as simply Yama Gāru, for they do not wish to offend such a spirit for referring to it similar to the dreaded Oni.
Name: Mascarade Race: Steametic Class: Sorceror Wild ( that the one the fits the most ) Appearance: see image Personality: a new 7 days "born" automaton with 3 differents beings memories ( a frail young boy, his twin bulk brother and a part of a decease lich ) 3 concept always "program" in his mind : Humanity, Curiosity, Relentless Background: Sēji (Sage) ***( coming from the soul part of the lich ). While few are given license to study in the Library of Scrolls in Sanbaoshi, many of the prefectures have unlocked the secrets of magic and train their brightest and wisest citizens in the arcane and divine arts. RP Sample:
Continue to speak to Velvet, Mascarade does seem to be interested anymore by the goblin.
"You identify yourself as VELVET , as it is written in my mind. WE call our self MASCARADE since a very long two week from now. But some individual life essence got like an eternity to acquire some skill and knowledge that has been transferred by the process. Probably like I will be assimilated in my next host when I will find my target. You seem a good candidate for it. I'm curious about the name you will associate to US if its the case."
"So your quest is to find ... "coins". WE will help you in your quest, then if WE find one it will be over and you will be free to help US to find the life vial transferral phylactery of the Master WE seek"
Been interpellated by Miles, Mascarade turns toward him and grabs the flask "... Is that a potion of clumsiness? If yes ...WE think WE have to experiment with the ability to move chaotically ... maybe it will help US the see all things clearer."
After bringing the flask near the face of the golem's mask MASCARADE wears, some liquid leak on each side of it but about half seem to be absorbed inside the bluish light jelly serving him as core that ties everything together
"Hmm WE See ..." he brings closer to Myles then continue ... "maybe you will do a better host Then Velvet"
Hearing the suggestion for the Banner, MASCARADE propose
"If a banner is something that represents each of US, OUR part will be a square since WE are four. In fact, since WE are multidimensional, a cube is a better symbol for US. The inside color of the cube will be a shade of gray since WE are color blind"
"What should be your symbols of each of you ?"

...to understand the message send to next of Kin ... we must back in time a little...
"Humanity"Not at the good place, not at the right time
- Mother of Thomy, Rebecah, was a descendant of long witch bloodline. She always hates her situation, and her family too. But with social pressure, SHe has to give birth to the dark community.
Tomorrow, it's the 17 solstices after the eclipse, during the ritual of transposing blood power of just born baby. But Rebecah knows what it gonna be for her baby. Life in that sect... no way. She flees away. She gives birth to two twins. Give them more love than no one cant dream ... always protecting them and reminded them that there always good to share with everyone, "just be patient" she always said.
... But THis Story is NOT about Rebecah.
"They're some around trying to interact. Communication evolves rapidly. I begin to understand the flux by very primitive life forms. understand better now the humanity necessity you inculcate."
"Curiosity"-At the good place but not at the right time-
Thomy was a Very intelligent child with a little too much curiosity... too much curiosity. He understands that the old woman asking many questions in the tavern about everyone in the village, days after days, was searching for them. He follows her where she now stays. It was an old manor nearly crumbly from the burden of time. but still standing ... in the basement. I caught her planning and searching in many books of dark magic. When she was asleep, he enters and finds a parchment with orders to use the life essence of that bloodline to transform her in a lich. Panic, he wants to get out and tell her discovery to her mother. But the Witch wasn't sleeping at all ... She appears right behind Thomy, paralyzes the poor child end sacrifice him in a dark ritual, putting his life force into a secret object containing her heart.
With THat She then was able to finish her transformation
... But THis Story is NOT about Thomy either.
"Direction is close, must solve enigma to be a part of simple life form, I understand that all information is necessary to achieve a goal"
"Relentless"-Not at the good place but at the right time-
Rhym ANd Rebecah never find what was happening to Thomy for years. Even if the old wich transforms near the village She takes time to hide the phylactery away where nobody can find it. With that, she will be immortal.
Year after year, The WitchLich evolve and study the evolution of the CHild left ... She was waiting that the now-adult Rhym was fully formed as an adult to take his body and transfer her life essence.
Rhym on his side has always been a little dummer than his twin brother, but that doesn't prevent to find that weird old grumpy was dealing about.
When The WitchLich was ready for her final stage and wanna get out to seek for Rhym, he was already at the good place at the right time, right behind her, striking trough her heart... a deadly well strike bullseye... but since heart not there anymore... maybe not so "at the good place" after all. The Witch put one hand in the forehead of the Brawler child, and absorb all the life from it. The body drops like a stone on the ceiling.
The witch has just the time to put a smile of satisfaction on her face ... before the sword inside her chest begin to shine very brightly then radiate some pure light of energy that dismisses the body of the old WitchLich. letting loose just pure Aether form by all of Them.
... But THis Story is NOT about Rhym nor The WitchLich either
"Some difficulties bring great reward to who can endure the harsh of inclemency. I understand you want me to never give up"
"Mascarade"-Finally searching for THE good place and finding THE right time-
The Pure Essence of Aether float around spin on itself ... searching for a place to BE. Then like an invisible mist, guide by the twin-link between the two brothers or the incomplete one of the WitchLich, the Aether essence float toward a city where the heart of the lich was hidden, waiting there for the final melting stage of the transformation
Arriving in the city, The essence find something to forge himself a vessel to be less volatile and seek now where to go
And, Yes ... THIS is the Story of Mascarade
"Now I'm fully operational to follow a group of archaeological researchers that goes deep down to find your precious LifeVial. I Will Study which one will be the most appropriate to be your bearer and that I must protect them since maybe there are the only ones that can do it. I understand that nobody should know that I'm a part of you trying to reach his heart for a reconstruction. Don't Worry. They don't understand complex concepts. Communication is now easy. They're like me. They reveal everything when I ask... Don't worry .. I mascarade myself... I wear some additional skin. With that, they don't recognize me. they just look to that skin they call vestment, and are in Owe and think I'm a far neighbor. Rest In Peace now, until I find you."
-Mascarade-

Some clarification on the Hengeyokai. Am I right in assuming that they can shift between humanoid and animal form of their type? And that their humanoid form still has some animalistic traits to it? That's how in interpreting it, let me know if I'm wrong.
Appearance: Yue has abnormally pale features. With his skin and hair having a grayish tinge to them. His eyes are a piercing silver. scattered about his hair are pale feathers, they might look like hair accessories but they're actually attached. He's tall for his kind, lean of build, and unnaturally light for his frame, as he shares the hollow bones trait of many birds. On his back is a pair of wings, connecting to his body at his shoulder blades. He likes wearing bright colors, to counterbalance his otherwise pale visage. Yue has three tattoos at the moment. On the palm of his right hand is an eye with a single teardrop falling from it, the entire thing is colored cobalt. On his upper left arm is big eyed fruit bat, the black and brown image is so realistic it looks fuzzy. On his lower back is a very intricate and detailed tramp stamp, depicting a golden crescent moon surrounded by silvery constellations.
Personality: Yue is naturally calm and patient to a fault. Almost too patient at times. A gentle and peaceful soul who will only use fighting as a last resort. But don't mistake kindness for weakness, he is a dangerous and vicious opponent. Stubborn and strong willed, Yue can, and will, endure a lot, whether that's pain, insults, or stress. A bit on the quiet side but still a social creature, he likes to be around people, but he'd prefer to listen than to be a big part of the conversation. But that doesn't mean he'll ignore you if you talk to him.
Background: Freak, monster, abomination. Those were the words that the people in Yue's tiny, close-minded, village used to describe the family of Hangeyokai when they moved in. Taking residence in a run down hut near the outskirts. They were only tolerated because the village was in desperate need of a healers, which Yue's parents were. Growing their own medicinal herbs and treating the villagers in exchange for trade. Sometimes coin, sometimes food, other times for trinkets. They weren't wealthy by any stretch, but they had enough to survive.
Then the bandits came. The tiny village stood little chance. Their people were slaughtered, captured, and pillaged. Yue's parents urged him to flee, so he bolted into the woods, expecting them to be right behind him. But they weren't. To this day Yue doesn't know if they survived. There was no way a nine year old boy could outrun a bunch of grown men, but boy did he try. Right up until the point where he took a crossbow bolt to the back, sending him to the ground. Adrenaline and fear beat out pain and he forced himself to his feet. But it was too late, the bandits were upon him.
But the finishing blow never came. Instead, something stopped the bandits in their tracks. Someone, or something, put a hand on Yue's shoulder. A male voice told him that he had done well, but now he should rest. Suddenly Yue got really, really sleepy.
Unbeknownst to Yue, he had just met a forest god. One that had seen what the bandits had done to the nearby village and was angered by it. One who had taken a liking to the little bird he had seen fleeing.
When Yue woke up, he was laying on a bed of moss, the smell of herbal tea wafting through the air. For a moment he thought he was home, and that this had all been a bad dream. But the figure he saw wasn't one of his parents. It was a Kitsune man. Yue was taken in as his apprentice. For the next ten years, Yue trained with the Kitsune. Learning the ways of combat, medicine, and many other things. Each time the mist came, somehow the ancient, hollow, tree that was their home stayed protected. Over time Yue received his tattoos, each one more intricate than the last.
About six months ago, Yue woke up to find that the tree and the Kitsune were gone. It was just him. All that was left was was moonstone necklace and a note. The note said that the Kistune had taught Yue everything he needed to know and that now it was time for him to rejoin the world and use his skills to help others. Just as the Kitsune had done all those years ago. So Yue put on the necklace and set off into the world.
(The necklace is kind of a magical item. It connects Yue to the forest god, so that the god always knows where he is. It's just a way for the god to appear and give Yue his next tattoo each time he levels up. Purely for thematic purposes.)
Some clarification on the Hengeyokai. Am I right in assuming that they can shift between humanoid and animal form of their type? And that their humanoid form still has some animalistic traits to it? That's how in interpreting it, let me know if I'm wrong.
Thank you for the application, yes that's pretty much it in a nutshell.
