[D&D-5e] Mists of Akuma: Scourge of Robai Shita

Name: Kamiya Seifun
Race: Hengeyokai - Kitsune
Class: Cleric
Background: The Seifun clan was a band of travelers, dancers and storytellers. They would bring their arts of illusion to various towns and joy would follow them until one day they played their tales in front of a dark being. The tale they wove drove the being mad with anger and he cursed the clan. Soon after that they would find villages turning them away, pots rusted, wagon wheels broke, and bandits seemed to waylay their every step. The clan split apart in the hopes that the curse would not follow all of them, but even apart tragedy struck. When Kamiya's father passed away due to an accidental poisoning her mother had enough. She went into a shrine and begged the gods for their help. So it was that Amatatsu, mother of Kamiya became a shrine priestess.

Kamiya herself has followed in the footsteps of her mother and she too is a shrine priestess. To this she still hears stories of the dark creatures and their various curses. Kamiya is often drawn from the shrine to deal with these dark forces. Returning back to her mother and the shrine with her tales and a hope that someday, somewhere, she will find a way to bring her family back together.

Personality: Despite the tragedy in her life Kamiya is happy and full of joy. She will dance in the sunlight for nearly no reason, sing, and just provide joy to all around her. She has a hard time believing that anyone, who is not a dark spirit, is truly evil and will always try to get them to change their ways if she can. She reserves her anger for the dark spirits and that anger can be terrible indeed.

Appearance: Long flowing silver hair, bright blue eyes, pointed silver ears atop her head, and a flowing fluffy silver tail make Kamiya stand out. Add on the vestments of her calling and she is a sight that brings many people into the shrine.

Vix Lockhardt Name: Vix Lockhardt Race: Hengeyokai - Kitsune Class: Moon Druid Appearance: One look at Vix and you realize that everyone you ever thought was a redhead was actually an orangehead. Without any evidence of dye, her head sports an impossibly vibrant red mane, cascading down off her shoulders and back. Peeking out from beneath her bangs, those large orange pupils are reflective, tiny mirrors, especially at night. Her face is young, no freckles, with a small nose. Around town she typically wears a hat or beanie and a dress. But rumor has it that beneath that hat lies two fluffy animal ears positioned too high on her head, and long bushy tail hides beneath that dress. Personality: Vix is bloodthirsty, quick to anger, and an implacable foe. She isn't stupid, but she seeks out conflict as a personal preference. Background: Roustabout. Vix's parents were Yamabushi, but she found such a life too boring, and yearned to actually do something. When she got thrown out of the village for biting a thief, she never looked back.   Vix spun the shot glass like a top, watching keenly as it spiraled around on the table, jumping every time it hit a bump. As it neared the edge, she put her hand out and caught it as it made its suicidal plunge. She looked up at the youth in the fancy hat. "So... what you're saying is... you have no idea what kind of monster is killing the villagers. You don't know how powerful it is. You assume that there's only one, but you don't know. You never got a good look and you didn't investigate the tracks yourself after the thing was gone. It could even be that the villagers killed each other. Have I got that right?" The young bard was nervous, but he put on his best smile. "I assure you the good villagers would never do that!" He fingered his lute idly as he tried to come up with what to say next. "Yea, I think it's a Shikome. It has to be a Shikome. Will you go take a look?" Vix snorts. She filled the little glass and downed the sake. "Of course I'm going to go take a look. And you're coming with me." She then reaches into her belt pouch and pulls out two coins. "But these two gold pieces say that we are not dealing with a Shikome."

Hey all, I am looking to reboot this game from a couple of years back. If you were among the original crew or submitted an application to this previously then let me know if you want to resubmit your original application. If you didn't apply the first time around and quite like the sound of this then by all means please check out the original post for all pertinent information, and also my forum here where there is quite a bit more information about the world and mechanics that is not listed in this advertisement.

I'll likely leave this advert open for a week or two depending on interest, but I certainly don't want or intend this to be a long and drawn out application cycle. I'll advise in advance before I close this off.

Appearance:
Goondox, though small in stature, exudes an intimidating presence with his wiry, muscular frame. His gleaming armor, always polished to perfection, reflects his disciplined nature and dedication to his oath. A finely crafted rapier hangs at his side, a testament to his preference for precision and agility in combat over brute strength. Despite his amphibian features, his bearing and meticulous presentation command respect.

Personality:
Goondox is not a scholar or a poet, but his unassuming wisdom and earnest charm make him a natural leader among his kin. His words, though simple, carry the weight of conviction, often inspiring others to rally to his cause. His commitment to protecting his people and preserving the marshes of his homeland defines his very existence. To Goondox, harm to the marshes is a grievous insult, one he cannot abide.

While his faith in his sacred duty is admirable, it sometimes manifests as a rigid piety. Goondox’s unwavering belief in his righteous path can make him seem arrogant to others, particularly those who do not share his reverence for nature or his structured way of life. Among the free-spirited Pyon, his disciplined and orderly demeanor sets him apart as something of an anomaly.

Background:
Born into a secluded Pyon clan isolated by the creeping Mists of Akuma, Goondox was shaped by the teachings of a wise elder who instilled in him a profound respect for the natural world. The elder’s lessons on the harmony of life and the sacredness of the marshes struck deep, shaping his soul. As Goondox meditated on these truths, he found his purpose: to become a guardian of his homeland’s fragile beauty.

Goondox awoke at dawn, his breath misting in the cool morning air. This was his sacred ritual—a daily journey of patrol and prayer. Each step through the marsh was an act of devotion, a meditation on the beauty he was sworn to protect and a vigil against the creeping corruption of the Mists of Akuma. The stillness of the swamp was his solace, a reminder of what was worth fighting for.

As always, his path led him to his favorite place: a wide, shallow pond tucked within the marshlands. Here, the trees parted, allowing sunlight to spill over the water’s surface, illuminating a mosaic of lily pads. The pond was alive with the gentle stirrings of nature: herons nesting in the surrounding trees, their graceful forms wading among the lilies, hunting fish and frogs with quiet precision.

But today, something was wrong.

A foul stench hung in the air, acrid and sickly sweet—the unmistakable mark of the Mists’ corruption. Goondox’s heart sank as he quickened his pace, his webbed feet barely disturbing the waterlogged ground.

“No... not here,” he whispered, dread tightening his chest.

As he rounded the final bend, the scene struck him like a physical blow. Standing at the water’s edge was a figure he recognized—or at least, had once recognized. It was the heron he had long admired for its dignity and wisdom, now grotesquely twisted by the Mists. The creature loomed impossibly tall, its form swollen to a monstrous eight feet. Its once-pristine white and gray feathers had blackened, dripping with an oily sheen. Its piercing gaze had been replaced with an unnatural, burning red glare.

Goondox didn’t hesitate. He knew the truth of the Mists too well—what they claimed, they twisted beyond redemption. Mercy had no place here.

“I’m sorry, my friend,” he said softly, drawing his rapier. The blade caught the morning light, glowing faintly with the radiant energy of his faith. With a mighty leap, he hurled himself at the corrupted heron. “By the light of life, I smite thee!”

The strike was swift and true. Radiant power surged through him, coursing into his weapon and striking the abomination down in a single blow. The corrupted heron let out a final, guttural cry before collapsing, its body twisting unnaturally as it hit the ground.

Breathing heavily, Goondox crouched to examine the corpse, ensuring the creature was truly dead. The stench was overwhelming, but he pressed on, patrolling the pond’s edge for any sign of further corruption. His worst fears were confirmed when he found the shattered remains of nests and the lifeless bodies of three other herons, their graceful forms now broken and still. The corrupted one had turned on its kin before falling to him.

His duty fulfilled for now, Goondox sank to the ground beneath a towering tree, his back against its sturdy trunk. The weight of the moment overwhelmed him. Hot tears welled in his eyes, spilling down his cheeks. He wept for the herons, for the pond, and for the unending battle against the Mists that always seemed to take more than they gave.

Through his tears, he whispered a quiet prayer. “May the light of life guide you back to peace... and grant me the strength to keep fighting.”

The marsh, though wounded, remained still. The sunlight danced on the pond’s surface, a fragile glimmer of beauty in a world so often cloaked in shadow.

Ryukotsu Application Name: Ryukotsu Race: Oni-Touched Class: Winter Wu-Jen Warlock (Pact of the Tome) Appearance: The most noticeable part of his oni nature are the horns jutting from the top of his head. His skin is also colored a deep blue, making even more separated from humanity. His long dark hair is pulled back in a tail, but is usually covered up by a hood he wears in an attempt to hide his tainted heritage. He stands slightly below 7 ft, about average for an onii-touched man, but he still hunches to try and hide it somewhat when in public. His clothing usually covers it, but his a right leg is clockwork prothesis. When he draws heavily on his Patron's power, it glows blue at the joins and gears. Thanks to his Patron his leg is never in danger of failing due to the cold. Personality: Like many oni-touched, Ryukotsu has a somewhat pessimistic outlook on life. His body changed drastically during his adolescence, grown horns and skin tone slowly changing. It didn't take long for many of the members of his family to shun and disown him. At a young age, he was left to fend for himself and deal with the scars, both physically and mentally, from these experiences. Embracing a patron in the depths of his despair brought new meaning to his life. He seeks the understand his patron and the world around them more deeply. He still the society of these lands to be a harsh and cruel one, but the world itself has much to consider and embrace. Background: Disgraced Amputee - Early in his life, after his shunning, Ryukotsu suffered a nearly mortal wound. If not for the kindness of a passing priest eh would have bled out. As it was, he lost his right leg. He managed to obtain an older model steampowered leg to replace it. It was painful and required much maintenance and adjustment. But it his now and works as well as any of the newest designs.   RP Sample: Ryukotsu was about to die. He couldn't even really hate the villagers who had chased him. No one wanted an oni-touched in their village, it was just common sense. According to them. They hadn't actually hurt him, not this time. But here he was at the bottom of a cliff all the same. And, all things considered it had been a lucky fall. Bumps and bruises mostly. Except for his right leg. The right leg was mangled, misshapen, bones jutting out of skin. He had managed to tie a piece of his clothing around his leg, right above the damage. As he lay now, staring into the clear, cold sky, he wondered why he bothered. He was dead, he just didn't realize it yet. "Why.." he reaches up to touch his horns rising above his head "do they hate me." He said it as a statement because he didn't expect an answer. Instead, a cold, feminine voice whispers "Because you lack power." Blinking, Ryukotsu realizes the voice was in his head. Was this death? Were their corrupted gods mocking him? Did even they hate him? "I can give you power.....Become Wu-Jen...swear to me now. You will become mine, and my power becomes yours." Ryukotsu blinks and the voice goes silent. He thinks, he bleeds, he dies, slowly. And deep insides, he find anger. Anger at predjudice, anger at death, anger long suppressed. And still, slowly he dies. He whispers allowed, hoping he will be heard "I swear. Make me Wu-Jen."
