Wyllis "Wyl" Underwood
right-aligned image

Name: Wyllis "Wyl" Underwood

Race: V. Human

Class: Druid (Shepherd) 2/Ranger 1

Alignment: Neutral Good

Background: Outlander (Guide)

Personality Traits:
-My wanderlust led to me leaving behind a meaningless life in the city for the quiet solace of nature, and I don't regret it one bit.
-I watch over my friends as if they were a litter of newborn pups - and that includes the newborn pups.

Ideals: Nature. The natural world is more important than all the constructs and material wealth and empty promises of "civilization." (Neutral)

Bonds: The people of my village are the most important thing in my life, and I would do anything to protect them.

Flaws: My self worth is derived from others - if I'm not being helpful then I'm not of any use.

Concept: "Where there's a Wyl, there's a way." So says the auburn-haired guide Wyllis "Wyl" Underwood to the people of Cilsie, the lone bastion of civilization in the otherwise inhospitable frozen vastness - his home for the last eleven years. Wyl is a tall fella, in his late thirties or early forties - it's tough to say exactly, what with all the beard and the wind-chapped skin. Still, as cold as it might be outdoors, Wyl is as warm-hearted as it comes. Someone looking to disparage him might call him a "people-pleaser," and maybe they're right. Thing is, making his friends happy is a big part of what makes Wyl tick. People in Cilsie don't have a whole lot, and when the difference between life and death might be a half cord of wood, or a bowl of venison stew, having people in your corner willing to share what you lack goes a long way. And Wyl has never had an issue making himself useful to the other members of his community. No, the wheels really only fall off his wagon when everyone is getting on fine and there's nothing that needs doing. That's when things feel too much like his past life, and the only solace is the cold solitude out there in the wilds beyond.

When he's not traipsing off on his own or guiding a hunting party through the underbrush, Wyl can be found in and around Cilsie doing anything and everything. He's a facilitator, a handyman, a jack-of-all-trades. Sure, he might lack for book smarts, but then who needs a college education in the middle of the wilderness? And sure, he'll probably never win a bodybuilding contest - or a fashion contest for that matter, but as the saying goes, if the ladies don't find him handsome, they'll surely find him handy.

Why I'd like to play: I asked, and 97mg kindly made a game in response. I'm very grateful and super excited to play (I believe everyone in here is new to me, so this should be fun getting to know you all!)

Writing Sample: This got me my and onlyfirst POTM, in Dec '22. Vyeggar sounds nothing like Wyl, but even if he was a jerk, I still have a soft spot for my half-orc friend.

Name: Brambleheart
Race: Elf (Wood Elf)
Class: Ranger (Swarmkeeper)
Background:Folk Hero (Savior of a Child, Once-Stranger from the Wilds.)

Appearance: A tall pale skinned elf, standing 6'5 wearing a patchwork outfit & wearing deer leather moccasin's. Glistening jewelry hangs from her long ears, black hair frost nipped & tangled, full of knots goes down to her upper back. Blackish blue lips find themselves impassive, yet day by day begin to default to a smile warm & understated.

Personality:

Personality Traits:
I enjoy my privacy & am a private person, letting only the words that are needed leave my lips.
I've come to enjoy other's company, though I may not always have much to say, I would struggle alone now.
I savor the admiration of others, nothing brings a smile to my face more than the laugh of a child, the invitation of an 'Elder' for a drink or someone genuinely wanting me to be around them.

Ideal:To live is to help others, it took me a long time to understand that. To understand what life should really be.

Bonds:My home has brought my life meaning, days of endless wandering through the pine feel so banal now...

Flaws:I struggle to open up, to be emotionally honest & desire to not worry others. I can be considered frigid, cold & inhuman. I am not human, but I wish that I was better able to-to share, how I feel.

Backstory: A tale of isolation told through generations. Within the pine, footsteps found in snow, permafrost disturbed. Black eyes without pupils watching from the edge of the forest, wreathed in pelt's & with a bow strapped atop their back. Vanishing for a few years, only to reappear by the end of a fifth no matter what, stalking eyes that watch the village come & go from the edge.

It started slowly.

The steps into the village, first a small tent placed near the edge of the tree line. Curious eyes & twitching ears, watching as people approached, skittering away. Rare moments where hunters started to run into her in the woods & what had to be fear? Began to dissipate, as questions were bandied out, yet she never replied, never spoke for weeks. Her first reply's were to a small child, lost in the depth's of the woods, having run off in the night & her words were simple.

"Come."

A heavily accented voice, a child atop her shoulders, she walked into town. Fifty years ago, she walked into town & found smiles granted towards her. Fifty years ago, she began to slink into that town & a smile began to tug onto her lips, thirty years ago a little home began to take shape. Twenty years ago, the children find her in her little shack on the outskirts of town practicing herbalism, tanning hides & smiling at them. Ten years ago, she comes to the meetings hesitantly & goes into the markets to talk.

Now?

She still holds back her talk, she still looks upon the village strangely, rarely speaking of where she came from. A little place, a little home abandonded for the endless tundra, for the endless pine. For a place called Cilsie, yet if you ask her, it's just?

H o m e.

Pretty aware your not taking anyone else right now, but I hope your interested in what you see & if anyone drops out or you decide you want another player? Brambleheart, the one who found a home. The one who slowly crept in & let a village seep into her heart?

Gets a good shot at it.

Name: Aldon Gundrikson
Race: Half-Elf (High Elf Ancestry)
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Class: Bard (College of Lore)
Background: Sage
Personality Traits:
1. I'm used to helping out those who aren't as smart as I am, and I patiently explain anything and everything to others.
2. There's nothing I like more than a good mystery.
Ideal: Knowledge. The path to power and self-improvement is through knowledge.
Bond: My hometown is the best, most interesting place on earth, and I'll do anything necessary to help and protect it.
Flaw: I am easily distracted by the promise of information.

About AldonAldon Gundrikson is a talented musician and scholar, a local boy done good who went off to college in the far-off big city more than twenty years ago. No one expected him to come back, except for rare family visits. Surely he'd have found fame and fortune in the wide world? Nope, not exactly.

After finishing college and partaking of various opportunities and adventures, he's recently returned to Cilsie, which he now regards as the best and most interesting place in the world, if only you have the eyes to see it.

To earn a living and be of service to his home town, he's opened a one-room schoolhouse to teach children the basics and maybe a little bit more. Plus he's a regular musician at the pub, parties, funerals, parades, and other gatherings.

First Day of School
"Well, children, now that I know all your names, what do you want to learn first?" said the young, clean-shaven schoolmaster. He was a somewhat short man with twinkling, mischievous purple eyes and maybe a little chubby, with a hint of the elvish about him.

"You, you raised your hand first. Penelope, right?" he said.

"Um, Mr. Gundrikson," she said shyly, "Why are you here?"

"I'm not sure I understand, Penelope. What do you mean by 'here'?"

"My mom says it's strange you came back to Cilsie," interrupted another, a round-faced halfling boy with bare feet that didn't quite touch the floor. "She says you went to college and are super smart and should have been a quarter to the king. She says there's nothing here in Cilse for the likes of you anymore."

Aldon Gundrikson's eyebrows shot up in surprise, but the merry twinkle never left them.

"Eddie, right?" he said, "Eddie Brambles?" The boy nodded. "I'll tell you, but do remember to raise your hand next time to get a turn. I don't have many rules for this school, but this is one of them, just so we're not all yelling over one another, though I bet you could shout over everyone. Am I right?"

Aldon gave young Eddie a conspiratorial wink as Eddie nodded a vigorous 'yes.' Then Aldon looked to the class at large.

"It's true that I went to college in Greatford. I learned a lot there and had a wonderful time. Maybe I could have served the king as a 'courtier.

He looks at Eddie, "I think 'courtier' is what your mother said, Eddie, not 'quarter.' Sounds almost the same, but a 'courtier' is someone who works in the court of the king, and a 'quarter' is one of the four pieces you get when you cut something in half, then half again. Silly words, sounding the same!"

Aldon looked toward the ceiling and rolled his eyes at the stupidity of words. A couple of the children laughed, a little uncertain if they're allowed.

"So yes, I might have been able to become one of the king's courtiers. His castle is definitely beautiful and it might have been fun."

Reaching into his pocket, pulled out a tiny metal rectangle and put it to his mouth and played a squealing, humming tune, his eyes closed in concentration. In the air beside him, colors swirled and formed themselves into a lifelike but miniature image of a great castle. The children oohed and aahed.

"Pretty isn't it!? That's Castle Bellingham, the king's castle in Greatford" he said.

One little dwarven girl in the back raised one hand up high and pointed at the metal rectangle with the other, saying "Uh! Uh! Uh!"

"Jilly? This? And very nice job raising your hand, by the way, Jilly.

"This instrument is called a harmonica. It was invented by a gnomish friend of mine in college, Mixelsprig by name. Nifty, huh?"

"But Mr. Gundrikson, why didn't you go to work for the king as a quarter, er, courtier?"
said Penelope, her raised of course.

"Ah yes, it might have been fun, as I said, but there are an awful lot of rules for everyone who lives and works at Castle Bellingham. Too many rules for me. Also, I'd have to work with some mean people. I wouldn't like that.

"Besides, I wanted to travel a bit and see the world."

"Where did you go?"
said Eddie.

"Lots of places! I'll tell you about them all sometime. But I learned something very important. And do you know what that is?"

The children all shook their heads 'no."

"I learned that Cilse is the best, nicest, most interesting place in the world, and that there's no where else I'd want to live besides right here at home."

Eddie, perhaps taking his mother's view to heart that Cilse a nothing place for unambitious people, scoffed.

"Truly! Did you know, for example, that Cilse was a bigger town a long, long time ago? Almost a city? Back then, it was called Cilsenairethon. Or at least, that was the name of the elvish castle.

"Do you children want to see what's left of the castle? There's not much there, but I can show you where the foundations are hidden under brambles. I'll tell you all about how the fortifications were laid out, and where the big weapon were placed, and who lived and worked there. I'll tell you stories about great the battles. And the romances!"

The children oohed and aahed again, their eyes wide.

"Do you want to go see now? Give me a show of hands. Everyone who wants to see the castle ruins and hear stories about Cilsenairethon that was, raise your hands high in the air!"

Every child raised their hands, practically jumping out of their seats. Some raised both!

Why Play Together? What could be better than playing a richly narrative-driven game, heavy on slices of life, with a DM who I enjoy reading as a player in my own campaign?

Name: Bilcock Bannon
Race: human
Class: wizard
Background: guild artisan, merchant
Personality traits: I always want to know how things work and what makes people tick
I like to talk at length about my profession
Ideal: I work hard to be the best there is at my craft
Bond: I pursue power to acquire someone’s love
Flaw: I am horribly jealous of anyone who can outshine me.

Appearance: Bilcock is a young man of average height and build. He has sandy brown hair that he keeps well-groomed and has a clean-shaven face. He wears simple yet well-kept robes. He always has an inquisitive look as he tends to analyze everything.

Personality: Bilcock is an intelligent and inquisitive man with a friendly disposition. He is obsessed with knowledge and hates not knowing things. His curiosity tends to get him into trouble as it overrides his common sense at times. He prefers to outthink people rather than fight them and considers a battle avoided to be a battle won. Resorting to violence is a sign that you have failed.

History: The son of a successful merchant, Bilcock had a more privileged upbringing than most in Cilsie. He was kept warm and never went hungry, and he got first dibs on many of the items that were brought into the town by traveling merchants. One such item was a spell book which he began studying earnestly. It was written in code, but Bilcock was clever enough to start deciphering it and learn a few simple spells. This triumph only fed his obsession and lust for knowledge.

His magical talents make him stand out in Cilsie. Some are impressed, but many others are fearful and superstitious. This did not bother Bilcock too much as his parents’ position in the town protected him from any violence. Then one day one of the barbarian tribes came to town to trade furs and meat. This brought them to Bilcock’s family store where Bilcock laid eyes on the barbarian chief’s daughter, Saskia. She was tall, fair skinned with golden hair and exotic tattoos. Bilcock became infatuated with her instantly and tried to get to know her. She wasn’t impressed with the wizard’s scrawny frame, but she was intrigued by his ability to use magic. Bilcok gave her a gift to signify his interest, and Saskia would return over the years with her father for more trading. While she did not dislike Bilcock, she made it clear that as the chief’s daughter, she would only marry someone who was powerful and noteworthy. To this end, Bilcock redoubled his studies in the hopes of gaining power, and he is eager for an opportunity to prove himself.

Why I’d like to play this game: I’ve been looking for something more role play heavy than slaying monsters and bandits and this sounds right up my alley. I have Asperger syndrome so I have a hard time socializing, and DnD helps me interact with people. i'd like something that has more depth and character.

RP Sample:
Bilcock smiled brightly as he saw the familiar faces of the barbarian chief and his entourage approach his parents’ shop. Bolgruff, the chief, gave the young man an annoyed look. It was no secret he disapproved of Bilcock’s interest in his daughter, but he left his daughter to choose for herself who she associated with. The big man walked past him, and his tribesmen followed. All except one.

Saskia walked up to Bilcock with a confident smile on her face. “I have another one for you.” she said, crossing her muscular arms across her chest.

“Oh?” Bilcock said, smiling eagerly. “Let’s hear it.”

“What gets bigger the more you take away?” Saskia asked.

Bilcock’s boyish smile did not waver as he looked up in thought. This was a game that Saskia had started after their first meeting. At first it had been meant to humble the cocky boy who she believed was too arrogant and boastful about his intellect, so she had given him a riddle. When he easily solved it, her opinion of him improved. Now she asked him a new one every time they met. It was something Bilcock looked forward to.

Bilcock pondered the question a few seconds before snapping his fingers. “A hole.”

Saskia sighed as she shook her head. “I thought I had you that time.” Her tone was slightly frustrated but not upset for she was a good sport, and she was actually pleased that he had passed another of her tests.

“It was a good try,” Bilcock said, though his tone was far from humble. “I doubt the average man would have gotten it.”

“The average man could still throttle you,” Saskia said, trying to knock him down a peg.

At this, Bilcock’s smile wavered. His physical inadequacies were a sore spot for him. To overcompensate for his insecurity, he said, “Only if they get close enough,” he drew magical runes and said “Ignis!” a fist-sized ball of fire flew through the air and hit a nearby barrel, scorching it. “And I’ll blast them before they do.”

Saskia looked at the barrel and back at Bilcock before she pulled out one of her throwing axes and hurled it at the target. It struck right in the center of the burn Bilcock had left. She smirked at Bilcock and said, “Oh really?”

His ego deflected, Bilcock could do little to regain his dignity. “You just wait, one day I’ll impress you.”

“I look forward to it,” Saskia said as she patted him on the shoulder. The physical contact made blood rush to Bilcock’s face, causing him to blush. Saskia noticed and chuckled.

“Ok, my turn,” Bilcock said. “I have three feathers to help me fly. I have a body and head but I’m not alive. Your strength determines how far I go. You can hold me in your hand, but I’m never thrown. What am I?”

Saskia sighed. While she enjoyed thinking up riddles for Bilcock, she hated being asked them. Not once had she solved any of his. She thought for several seconds, then a minute, then five. Finally, she shook her head and shrugged. “I give up. what are you?”

Bilcock smiled, his pride restored. “An arrow.”

Martim Frosthorn
right-aligned image

Name: Martim FrostHorn
Race: Human
Class: Paladin (Oath of Ancients)

Appearance: Martim Frosthorn is a tall, sandy-haired youth who has spent his short life wandering and training to protect his corner of the world. He typically spends most of his time wearing plain armor with a warm cloak overtop to keep off the cold. His cloak is either a dull brown to help him blend in during warmer months, or white when winter comes.
Martim isn’t usually the first to speak, and rarely takes off his horned helmet. He has a habit of staring off into the distance, admiring the landscape around him. This can sometimes make it difficult to tell if you’re really getting through to him, as he doesn’t give a lot of feedback.
However there are certain scenarios where the young man will snap into action, moving swiftly to protect the innocent from the dangers that stalk the land.
If one catches Martim at his most distant, they can hear the young man quietly humming snippets of old songs to himself. These are mostly the same traveling songs his parents used to sing, though some are old dwarven ballads he learned from Dwain.

Character Concept: A calm young paladin with an easy smile, an air of sorrow, and a powerful desire to protect people. Martim will be built as a flexible defender who wants to keep people safe.
Martim's potentially a bit awkward with his distant attitude, but naturally earnest and serious when it comes to it. Not that he's too stoic, but he seems more like he's going through the motions than properly engaging in situations. His job would be a mix of odd jobs, blacksmithing and patrolling the wilderness around the village (not that anyone has asked, and Dwain is wondering if he should have trained Martim more in blacksmithing or something a bit more useful for the village.)
Also, expect his horns to snag on coat racks and doorways.

Backstory: Martim’s parents were a pair of traders who came from a distant land. With the paved road providing easy trade opportunities they rarely stayed at the old family house in proper. Instead, Martim and his parents spent their life on the road, traveling by wagon across the long roads to Cilsie and back on a yearly basis. During these times, his mother and father built a relationship with the dwarves of the nearby valley, trading food and necessary supplies for their fine crafts.

Growing up, Martim deeply admired those brave few who wandered the wild and worked tirelessly to keep monsters and raiders away from the main roads, gaining a childish love of valor and heroic tales.
Unfortunately for Martim, one winter was particularly bad, almost as bad as the current one. In those terrible conditions, the young family were nonetheless desperate to make at least one more trade to the dwarves to secure enough money to bunker down for a long winter. This run was their last, and they fell prey to a yeti ambush in the midst of a blizzard.

Martim was saved only by a group of dwarves who were trying to meet his family halfway to prevent their foolhardy journey. The young boy was the only survivor.
The dwarves cared for Martim over the winter, and he made a few friends among them who enjoyed his youthful curiosity about their craft. When the long winter broke, he was taken to Cilsie, where the gruff old Dwain the dwarf took him in as a favour for his clannish cousins.

In the years that followed Martim spent his youth overcoming his grief while wandering the countryside, his reckless spirit driving him to wander the wilder places of Cilsie more and more.
Eventually Dwain saw little option but to train Martim in combat, and Martim learned the way of the axe from the hands of a veteran fighter. Eventually Dwain deemed Martim a decent enough fighter, even though he was unsure about the youth's age (being little more than a boy in dwarf years) and Martim was free to follow his own.
But there was a problem, out in Cilsie, what is there for a trained fighter to do?!

Why I would like to play this game: Games with you are a blast! I'm absolutley down for another round!

Writing sample: Kurnus in our other game

Phann Aelfdottir. An elven woman of about 80 who was orphaned when her mother died here 87 years ago. she has grown into a highly competent smith (artificer), who was in a relationship with Jessica, a local girl who Phann grew up with and fell in love with, but Jessica died of old age about a decade ago, while Phann still looks like a healthy young woman, leaving the local humans a bit perplexed on whether to treat her as an old widow or a young, and in many cases potentially wooable, woman.
Those old enough to remember do know that before she settled down with Jesssica she had a habit of leading on young men as well as apparently some young women. That was 70 years ago now, so who know what, or who she might be interested in now. She is however, still the town blacksmith and a very capable one at that.

Name: Keg Chiliad

Race: Grimwhal (custom lineage)

Class: Artificer

Alignment: Neutral Good

Background: Far Traveler

Personality Traits:
-I have my own ideas about what is and is not food, and I find the eating habits of those around me fascinating, confusing, or revolting.
-I honor my deities through practices that are foreign to this land.

Ideals Inquisitive: Everything is new, but I have a thirst to learn. (Neutral)

Bonds: Though I had no choice, I lament having to leave my loved one(s) behind. I hope to see them again one day.

Flaws: I am secretly (or not so secretly) convinced of the superiority of my own culture over that of this foreign land.

Concept: The grimwhal are an indigenous cold-adapted people bearing a common lineage with cetaceans. They boast spiritually and magically adept crafters. Some live in caves near the sea and live off its bounty, others are nomadic and follow the seasonal movements of large herbivores. No grimwhal tribe had ever made contact with humans or other simian-type peoples until recently. The healer Keg comes from a coastal tribe whose skin and clothing are all shades of violet due to the pigments in a kelp that provides both a food staple and fibers. Keg's tribe has recently begun suffering from a mysterious, debilitating malady and he was sent on a sojourn to find either a remedy or help, whether mundane or divine. His travels brought him to the town of Cilsie and its mysterious inhabitants.

Why I'd like to play: The game concept and the name of the town reminded me of Northern Exposure which I love and I thought it would be interesting to RP in a setting like that. I know it's base races only but I thought I'd try something quirky and see if it flies.

I like to imagine that there's a single warforged citizen of Cilsie who just kind of helps out anyone in town with anything they need. He makes the day-to-day in town a little more bearable for everyone and things were worse before he wandered into town one day years ago.

Being a machine, he would definitely be a part of the group that the town puts together to investigate and solve the problem of the worsening weather, and his mysterious origins can serve as a GM plot-hook. I would very much like to play this character. Would you allow it, 97mg?

Virella Thornbloom
right-aligned image

Name: Virella Thornbloom

Race: Wood Elf

Class: Sorcerer (Wild Magic)

Alignment: Neutral Good

Background: Far Traveler (Wanderer)

Personality Traits:
-I express affection or contempt in ways that are unfamiliar to others.

Ideals: Inquisitive. Everything is new, but I have a thirst to learn. (Neutral)

Bonds: I'm fascinated by the beauty and wonder of this new land.

Flaws: I have a weakness for the new intoxicants and other pleasures of this land.

Concept: "Where am I? How did I get here?" Virella thinks to herself. She remembers leaving her home (not that she was sure where home was, or if she had family) and traveling. Virella is unaware of how or why she ended up here, in Cilsie. She woke up in their medical ward after a couple of local fishers found her passed out by the edge of a river.

After they helped heal her and offered her lodging, Virella has dedicated herself to helping the village of Cilsie. She discovered that she was capable of magic, though at times it could be unpredictable.

Why I'd like to play: I love the idea of a slice of life campaign in a D&D setting

Writing Sample: It's not much right now as it's my first time back to PBP in a few years and I started up again less than a month ago: https://www.rpgcrossing.com/showthread.php?t=230324
